FALL 2014FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome Kankakee Community College student athletes, parents, supporters and fans!

As we begin the 2014-15 academic year at Kankakee Community College, there is an energy and excitement accompanying many changes in the past and current calendar year. We have relocated the South Extension Center in Watseka, the North Extension Center is open and houses our Workforce Services and adult education programs as well as being the site for our massage therapy program, the Manufactur-ing and Industrial Technology Center on Rt. 45/52 is open and the welding, technology, and other classes are running at capacity. Plus, we have just received funding for the construction of an Advanced Technology Education Center.

Adding to those operational occurrences is the change in our staff with a new vice president for instructional and student success, Dr. Michael Boyd, who joined us in May, and is already mak-ing a difference in the lives of our students with his leadership of our faculty.

We have been fortunate to watch the continued success of our athletic teams, and you see a great deal of pride as you walk the halls of the college.

The student-athletes of KCC live our motto to “Start here. Finish Anywhere.” It is my firm belief that education is the key to all of our life suc-cesses, and I remain committed to our mission to develop leaders. Our athletic program, and each sport, begin with the strong dedication of our complete coaching staff and are supported by the KCC board of trustees and our commu-nity. As parents and educators, we pledge to join your efforts to provide encouragement and support to our student-athletes.

I wish our student-athletes success both as students and as athletes at Kankakee Community College. It is an honor to be part of the Cavaliers family, and I would like to thank the parents of our student-athletes, each member of the coach-ing staff, and the members of our Cavalier Club who help to support our athletic teams. Please join the Board of Trustees, myself, faculty, staff, and all Cavalier fans in wishing each of our teams and coaches a successful season.

FALL 20142013 RECAP

www.kcc.edu | 3

The KCC Women’s Volleyball team debuted as the No. 23 ranked team on the NJCAA preseason national poll in 2013. The Cavaliers were also the number one ranked team in the district for the majority of the season and saw their national ranking rise as high as No. 17 the week of Oct. 2.

The squad also captured its first outright tourna-ment title since 2010. Two team members received All-Region honors and another received an NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement, for-merly “Academic All-American.” The team finished the season with 33 wins and 16 losses, and a national ranking of No. 25.

MEET THE HEAD COACH

Head Coach Gary Sien took over the reins of the Cavaliers volleyball program in March 2000.

In 14 seasons at KCC, Sien’s teams have won two Region IV titles, 28 of his players have earned All-Region honors and ten have been All-Americans. A veteran coach of over 900 matches, Sien has compiled 539 wins in women’s volleyball and 690 wins overall.

From 1989 to 1995, Sien coached at Trinity International University in Deerfield. At Trinity, he was men’s volleyball coach for seven seasons, winning two conference champi-onships and third place at National Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics (NAIA) nationals; and he also coached the women’s program for four seasons.

At Kendall College in Evanston, Sien was the assistant women’s coach for two seasons and head coach of the first Kendall men’s volleyball team (1998).

Sien is a 1989 graduate of Trinity International University, then Trinity College, with a degree in physical education. He helped form Trinity’s men’s volleyball team, was captain and named most valuable player twice. Sien also toured Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela while competing internationally with the Athletes in Ac-tion volleyball team in 1986.

Along with his coaching duties, Sien serves as coordinator of the KCC Fitness Center.

HEAD COACH GARY SIEN

With one of the most difficult schedules in the region, the Cavaliers will be challenged right off the bat, playing four Division I teams in their first six matches. Also noteworthy is the Owens Com-munity College Tournament, one of the major NJCAA tournaments of the year. It features 30 teams, and 20 of them were ranked sometime in 2013. Following a number of highly competitive contests within the region, one of the team’s goals is to earn a trip to Phoenix for the Division II National Tournament.

The Cavaliers will have two freshmen setters, Haley Fairfield and Kaelyn Vaughn, to direct the uptempo Cavaliers offense.

The Cavaliers return five hitters who were responsible for more than 62% of the offense

a year ago. If they can quickly mesh with two new setters, the team’s hitting could exceed last year’s total.

The opposite/outside hitters are Rachel McLaughlin, Morgan Strzok, Courtney Welch, Tay-lor Wood, Victoria Worsfold. Almost all of them can play multiple positions.

In 2013, the middle attack and blocking was ex-ceptional. The goal this year is for Brooke Morris, Christina Cepero, Janelle Sundine and Elizabeth Zuber to surpass those achievements.

Rachel Greene, Holly Koch and Mercedes Serrano are the three experienced, back row players who will make up the team’s defense at the defensive specialists/libero position.

ASSISTANT LOUIS CUNNINGHAM

ASSISTANT ALYSIA ARMSTRONGFirst year coach Alysia Armstrong of Ashkum recently completed her academic career at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, graduating with an M.S.Ed. in kinesiology, sports management track. Armstrong’s un-dergraduate degree was also in kinesiology, with a minor in coaching. She graduated with university honors and also received the Charlotte West Scholarship, the Dorothy Davies Kinesiology Award and was a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society.

Armstrong was a four year starter for the Salukis, including being First-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference in 2012. Her many athletic accolades include All-Tournament at the Memphis Invitational, Active Ankle Chal-

lenge MVP and the Saluki Invitational MVP. She also coached two years with Southern Illinois Select Volleyball Club.

A local standout at Clifton Central High School, Armstrong was on the volleyball and basketball teams and was All- Conference Sangamon Val-ley and on the Daily Journal All Area team in both sports. She was also named Most Outstanding Player at the KCC Summer Showcase volleyball match in 2009.

Armstrong also is an adjunct faculty member at KCC, teaching classes in the Physical Education Department.

Louis Cunningham is in his first year as a Cavaliers assistant volleyball coach. He has extensive background in strength and conditioning.

Cunningham was born and raised in Joliet and began playing organized baseball at age 6. He became a three-sport athlete (baseball, basketball, track) in sixth grade at Troy Junior High School. In high school, he contin-ued training in three sports.

Upon graduation, Cunningham served in the military for nearly 10 years, then began playing ice hockey and rugby in various competitive leagues both in the U.S. and overseas. During this time he also began serious strength training. He changed focus from hockey and rugby to powerlift-ing and attended the National Personal Training Institute in Orlando.

Since that time, he has been either training with or coaching a wide vari-ety of athletes, including world record holding power lifters, football and baseball players, businessmen and soccer moms.

Cunningham is currently completing a General Studies degree at KCC. He is also applying to enroll in the college’s Physical Therapist Assistant program.
