Back in 1915, President Woodrow Wilson established a 265,000-acre area between Estes Park and Grand Lake as Rocky Mountain National Park. A century later, we are celebrating the 100th Anniversary for Colorado’s

largest National Park! What makes an area of land a National Park? It has to have special scenic, historic, or scientific importance, be maintained by the national government, and kept preserved in its natural state. The one thing more beautiful than the Park is the fact that the past 100-years worth of Colorado visitors have helped conserve this majestic area of land.

Starting September 2014 and continuing through September 2015, there will be various events, conferences, activities, etc. in the local surrounding communities to help commemorate this special event: ice cream socials, Centennial hikes, a “Then and Now” walking tour, art shows, seminars, fireworks, National Junior Ranger Day, and so much more. Even though you might not be located in Estes Park, Grand Lake or any of the surrounding communities, you should still be excited for this. Any positive publicity relating to our beauty and magnificence is great for Colorado! Vacationers will come from every

direction to revel in Colorado’s wondrous Rocky Mountain National Park. That means they might be passing through your city on their way from California, Texas, Tennessee, or North Dakota. They’ll stop in your town and realize, “This town is great and it has so much to offer! I should stay one more night and take in as much of Colorado as I can.” Pretty soon, the accommodations inside and surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park will be completely booked and visitors will have to stay in the neighboring communities such as Granby, Allenspark, Drake, Boulder, and Nederland. Vacationers are willing to stay in Denver just to take a day trip to the Park. This gives vacationers more of an opportunity to see your town, realize how wonderful it is, and end up staying an extra night with you. Money Well Spent... Recently, I was thinking about how The Colorado Vacation Directory can feature Agritourism on our website. So I Googled “Agritourism Colorado” and found Agritourism Resources

(http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/ag_Markets/CBON/1251624660541). This led me to think about the Colorado Association of Destination Marketing Organization, which led me to an article written by Jason Blevins for the Denver Post, posted on 10/4/2013 titled “Tourism Experts Worried Colorado Branding Effort Might Derail Campaign” -- What an interesting article. To be honest, I read it last October but reading it again almost a year later, I am left wondering if Gov. John Hickenlooper’s choice of Aaron Kennedy to be our state’s Marketing Chief and creating a new logo and brand was money well spent. I wonder and look…first stop is the official website for Colorado. I expect to find our new green triangle logo there given the natural relationship between the marketing of Colorado and our official travel website. Nope, they’re still using the fan favorite: the red ‘C’ with a bright sun-yellow center. So who is using the logo? It’s 11 months old, Colorado invested $2.3 million in research and development, but our new logo in infancy is an endangered species…no sightings, no news articles since October 2013. However, everywhere I shop, I see t-shirts, shot glasses, and hats proudly displaying our state flag or our “C” logo. I ask the question: Where has money been well spent? In the last 2 years, we have updated 50+ maps on our website. When we update a map, we also update the text and optimize search engine standards for the page. Then we broadcast: first to the businesses in that area hoping to hear what needs to be removed or added; then an E-News is sent, most of our subscribers are vacationers who sign-up via our website or Facebook page (yes, you get emails from us about parts of Colorado that are not about your location); lastly, we brag it up on Facebook for the rest of the world to see.

FUN FACT: Colorado Vacation Directory Facebook posts that contain a map engage more people than any other style of post.

MONEY WELL SPENT…Google Search “Colorado Maps.” The #3 listing is titled Colorado State Maps & Activity Maps | CO Vacation Directory linking to: www.coloradodirectory.com/maps/.

Okay, lets try “Colorado Scenic Byways Maps.” YIPPEE! We are #2 with only CDOT beating us.

What about a Google images search? “Colorado Scenic Byways Maps” This creates MORE GOOD NEWS! 40% of the top 10 images are published on www.coloradodirectory.com.

SHOUTOUT: Nice work to Colorado Vacation Directory Web Department!

YES, The Colorado Vacation Directory is spending its branding dollars in ways that are visible to: vacationers seeking unique/original content, advertisers seeking exposure to the vacationing public, and the people at my office who are passionate about Colorado and thrive on the success of our clients.

In the tourism industry, it’s sometimes hard to tell if you receive a scam email request. At first glance, it may look like every other request but you have to look closely at the details to see if it is genuine or not. Here is an example of an email Hideout Cabins recently received:

From: Helen cookTo: undisclosed-recipients:Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 4:42 AMSubject: Reservation

Hello,

Kindly let me know if there are availability for 4 rooms. Arrival date 04th September 2014 and Departure date 20th September 2014 and the total bill.

Waiting to read from you soon.

Thanks,

Helen.

This email wouldn’t be stopped by any filters you may have because none of the words put up a red flag, most filters don’t check for grammar, and there’s no way to limit length of stay without a Reservation system.

Follow these tips when you receive an emailed Reservation request and you should be able to prevent a spammer from taking advantage of your business:

1. If it was sent to “Undisclosed Recipients” and not you directly. 2. If it was sent at an odd time of the night (4:42 AM). 3. If the person requested a type of accommodation you don’t have (i.e. request for rooms and you have a campground). 4. If you have an inquiry form and it wasn’t filled out, just copied and pasted into an email. 5. If they request to stay for a long period of time and you don’t do long-term rentals. 6. If they use improper English, “Waiting to read from you.” 7. If they want a bill without asking specifics or making a Reservation. 8. If they disclose too much information and/or are too vague: “We are a Christian group attending a conference in your area.” It probably isn’t necessary for them to tell you they are a Christian group and they didn’t specifically state which town or area you are located in.

Thinking about these before you reply will save you time, money, and a headache. If you have any additional red-flags, let us know and we will gladly publish them to help warn others!

News Talk to me about your area’s events. No really, talk to me! Vacationers plan their trip around Colorado’s many unique events and I can help you promote them on the Calendar of Events section of our website. We will promote your area’s events for FREE if it’s an annual event that’s open to the public and supported on

your Chamber of Commerce’s website. From the Burro Races in Fairplay to the BMX State Finals at the Mesa County Fairgrounds to the Wildflower Tour aboard the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad, there are hundreds of only-in-Colorado events for vacationers to plan their trip around. And if they’re coming to your town for that event, wouldn’t it be nice if they stayed and played with you!?

So talk to me about your events. I’ll promote them and thereby promote you!

Is Print Dead? Recently, Hilton (age 75) and I (age 66) took a motorhome vacation around Lake Superior. We brought three laptops, two iPhones, and a TomTom for navigation. We had a rough idea of where we wanted to go but no definite reservations.

We drove into Minnesota and decided it was time to settle on where to stay and what to do. I thought we had plenty of electronics with access to the Internet to help us finalize our plans but it turns out I was mistaken. On the road, I discovered I wanted to stop at Visitor Centers to pick up information on places to stay and fun things to do. We used the print literature to plan our trip/route and often changed our mind, especially if there was an attractive display ad. We were drawn to ads that emphasized both lodging and fun activities and when multiple attractions were combined together. This gave us a sense of the area and all we could do.

PRINT IS NOT DEAD. It is a vital part of the traveling tourist decision-making process.

On one of our trips delivering directories this spring, we noticed one campground had a handout sitting on their check-in/out desk (see example below) that piqued some interest. At the top, it asked, “How was your visit?” and asked vacationers to rate them on TripAdvisor. Also, one of their business cards was attached to it reminding them whom they stayed with after returning home.

We think this is a brilliant idea! It is a cheap way to market yourself and make your customers happy. If you don’t want them to use TripAdvisor and have a section on your own website or know of another place you would rather have them comment on (such as Facebook), suggest that one instead! Hopefully they had a wonderful experience and will reflect that in their comments!

Each morning, I wake up and think of my favorite quote, “Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” - Walt Disney. Right now, I am curious about AGRITOURISM and the role The Colorado Vacation Directory can play in promoting our vacation destination niche: barn dances, bird-watching, herd branding, calving, children’s camps, corn mazes, county fairs, cross-country skiing, dude ranch, farmer’s markets, farming, farmstay, feeding farm animals, fencing, fishing, food festivals, food processing facility tours (cheese, jam, candy, cider, beer, wine), guided farm tours, guided ranch tours, harvest festivals, hay rides, haying, historical museums, hoe-downs, hunting, micro-brewery tours, mountain biking, off-roading, painting, photography, pioneer settlement demonstrations,

ranching, ranch-stay, rodeos, roundups, seeing farm animals, snowmobiling, square-dancing, stock shows, u-pick harvesting (fruits, vegetables, Christmas trees), wagon rides, wildlife viewing, winery tours and tasting. I am surprised that cross-country skiing, historical museums, mountain biking, off-roading, and snowmobiling are listed. Given the list, I would also add: farm to table dining, hiking, sledding, snowshoeing, state parks, national forests, parks and landmarks, scenic and historic byways, hot spring pools, historic districts, geology, paleontology, camping, rafting, skiing, kayaking…

Tourism Connection 5

Social media has become one of the most important and relevant forms of marketing, advertising, and brand communication. Up until now, businesses haven’t had a definitive way to listen to their audiences; now they do.

Social media is a dialogue, not a monologue. Consumers can give their feedback and not all of it will be positive. Here are a few steps you can take to handle the negative comments a little easier.

Identify the Comment If you don’t know what the consumer is saying, you don’t know which kind of response is the most appropriate and you don’t know how you can resolve the issue.

Determine the Response The most important thing is to handle all comments in a positive way as if the customer was in front of you. It is not beneficial to argue with them on a public platform making it visible to a number of people.

Talk about ways you can improve the situation. If you receive constructive criticism, thank your customer for bringing it to your attention and suggest a way you can improve the situation. Use words such as Thank you, I understand your concern, What can I do for you, I am sorry, and We plan to…

If you receive a spam message or if someone is trolling (intentionally trying to get a rise out of online users), don’t respond; they do nothing to benefit your business.

Respond Privately Sending a private message or email makes it easier to respond to the initial issue. It gives a personal touch that the customer might be looking for.

Once the complaint is fully resolved and the customer is satisfied, you could ask them to remove the original post or ask them to post a happy resolution, as it is important to keep a good reputation online.____________________________________________________

“Thanks for…always looking out for our businesses, Michelle, I was just telling Ryan (owner) how great you are to work with. And that you are up-selling to us in a thoughtful way - that will really help our businesses get the most out of your site. I deal with a lot of advertisers

that are not so smart. Once I sign the contract, they disappear and I have to do a lot of the leg work myself. If they just told me what to do on their site, it would be much easier for both of us! Anyway, just wanted you to

know that I really appreciate what you do.”- Lisa Havlik

Web Pages Viewed - January 1, 2014 through September 30, 2014

Use this 2 ways. First, you can find yourself and see how many people visited your page on our website. Second, this gives you the ending of your web address (called a Domain Name or in computerized URL). So your complete address would be, for example: www.coloradodirectory.com/11milelodge/.

Why do some businesses get more page views than others? There may be several reasons. They may be listed under more buttons/indexes, have photos on their page (which gets them a visitor attracting picture symbol), have banners leading to their web page, have their web address shown on brochures and ads, have links on other websites, like their chamber’s website, etc., have been listed on ColoradoDirectory.com for a longer period of time, and/or may be in a more popular town (such as Estes Park). There could be other reasons, and sometimes we just don’t know exactly why. Call our office (888-222-4641) and we may be able to suggest ways you can get more bang for

more bucks. Save Your URL! Write it down. Post it by your phone. Mention it when talking to prospective guests say, “Do you have Internet access? Our Web address is:www.coloradodirectory.com/[shown below]” Note: We report “Page Views,” not “Hits.” (Hits are inflated. For example, from Jan 1, 2013 to Dec 31, 2013 we had a total of 5.14 million page views from 70.2 million hits. We use the lower, more conservative number.) Page Views, while not perfect, is the most accurate of all the web statistics. An asterisk * means the page was up less than 9 months.
