ISGA  Officers  Bob  Sanderson,  President      Jonathan  Sprouts,  Inc.  P.O.  Box  128  Marion,  MA      02738      USA  Tel:  508.763.5505  Fax:  508.763.2334  Email:  bob@isga-‐sprouts.org

Bob   Sanderson   is   the   President   of   ISGA   and   Jonathan's   Sprouts,   Inc.,  which   has   been   supplying  fresh  sprouts  to  New  England  and  beyond  since  1976.

From   its   beginning,   Jonathan's   has   made   a   commitment   to   sprout   quality   research   and  development.  They  have  had  a  meticulous  record  keeping  system  to  track  sprouts  back  to  the  seed  lot  they  came  from,  first  for  quality,  then  for  organic  certification,  and  finally  for  safety.  They  also  have   a   long-‐standing   relationship  with   an   independent   lab   that   has   been   testing   their   product.  They  hired   a   student   assistant   for  Dr.  Robert  Wick  one   summer   to   forward  his  work  on  Alfalfa  plant   pathogens,   and   have   performed  many   of   the   quality   experiments   in   their   Rochester,   MA  operation.   This   has   made   it   simpler   for   Jonathan's   to   meet   and   surpass   the   requirements   for  growing  safe  quality  sprouts.

Bob  has   long   felt   that   the  unique  properties  of   sprouts,   and   the  ways   in  which   they   are   grown,  require  novel   approaches   to  assuring   their   safety,   and  has  questioned  whether   lab   results   from  sanitization   treatments   accurately   reflect  what   is   achieved   in   the  production   environment.     For  this   reason,   he  has  been   committed   to   improve   sampling   and   testing  protocols,   and  working   to  make  sure  they  are  being  uniformly  applied.  He  has  also  promoted  alternative  interventions,  such  as  competitive  exclusion,  that  have  shown  some  promising  preliminary  results.

Jonathan’s  continues  to  be  an  innovative  leader  in  the  sprouting  industry,  committed  to  selling  the  highest  quality  organically  grown  sprouts  possible.

The  ISGA  is  grateful  to  Bob  and  Barbara  Sanderson  and  Jonathan’s  Sprouts  for  the  work  they  are  doing  to  serve  the  sprout  industry.

The ISGA would like to thank Bob and Barbara  Sanderson and Jonathan Sprouts, Inc. for their generous sponsorship.                        Barbara  and  Bob  have  long  been  committed  to  working  together  with  other  sprout  growers  to  create  more  sales  and  better  quality  sprouts  for  all  growers.  With  this  commitment,  in  1980,  they  contacted  the  other  New  England  sprout  growers  to  contribute  to  a  grant  to  the  University  of  Massachusetts  to  support  the  work  of  Dr.  Rob  Wick  in  studying  the  plant  pathogens  that  were  undermining  the  quality  of  the  sprouts  and  find  ways  to  improve  sprout  quality  and  shelf  life.    In  1984  they  founded  the  New  England  Sprout  Growers  Assn.  with  these  same  growers  to  take  advantage  of  Federal-‐State  Marketing  Program  grants  and  create  a  collaborative  sprout  marketing  program.  Wanting  more  financial  power  for  promoting  sprouts,  the  NE  Sunsprout  growers  approached  the  US  and  Canadian  Sunsprout  Grower  Association,  who  agreed  to  join  forces  in  starting  the  International  Sprout  Growers  Association  in  1989.    The  first  ISGA  convention  was  in  San  Antonio,  TX  in  February  1990.  One  Sanderson  from  Jonathan  Sprouts  has  been  on  the  BOD  from  the  beginning,  and  actively  working  with  other  sprout  growers  to  make  the  industry  strong,  increase  consumption  of  sprouts,  gather  knowledge  of  best  safety  and  quality  practices  and  relax  and  enjoy  the  companionship  and  experience  of  other  growers,  and  experts  in  related  fields,  at  annual  conventions.      Bob,  Barbara,  Rich  and  Liz  are  pleased  to  have  the  opportunity  to  be  with  everyone  in  Orlando  this  spring  and  thank  all  of  you  for  making  the  effort  to  be  a  part  of  this  amazing  gathering.  We  also  especially  thank  Sheila  and  Martha  from  Marjon  Specialty  Foods  and  the  other  members  of  the  Convention  Committee  for  all  the  work  behind  the  scenes  to  make  this  convention  possible.
