Welcome to the 2014 ILMDA Construction Supply Expo

At this expo, we are celebrating 125 successful years for ILMDA. My father attended the convention for years. He felt that the education programs were always very beneficial; and his interactions with other lumber dealers in sharing ideas and sometimes controversial facts and figures, were always interesting and relevant. I have followed in my father’s footsteps, and for the past 30 years my involvement with the expo has been a blessing to me.

He will walk you through the management systems you should have put in place and will finish with the items OSHA inspectors have found in the past at lumber industry facilities. If you only go to one safety session this year, then this is the one for you.Brian Bothast is a Compliance Assistance Specialist with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in Peoria, Illinois. He has worked for Caterpillar in the Environmental, Health, and Safety Department and as an Industrial Hygienist with OSHA. He is a 1988 graduate of Illinois State University with a B.S. in Environmental Health.

Dreaded Residential Jobsite OSHA InspectionsIn this seminar, OSHA Compliance Specialist Dustin Miller will give attendees a detailed explanation of OSHA inspection protocols. He will discuss commonly cited standards as they apply to homebuilders and residential contractors. An explanation of OSHA inspection protocols – why inspections are initiated and how they are conducted – will be reviewed along with post-inspection procedures. In addition, information specific to residential fall protection compliance measures will be disseminated.Dustin Miller is a Compliance Assistance Specialist with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in Fairview Heights, Illinois. He has a BS in Safety Management and an MS in Human Resource Development. Dustin has been with OSHA for over ten years and previously worked as a Safety Superintendent industrial construction contractor at a petrochemical facility and as a human resources manager at a centrifugal cast foundry.

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Improving the Performance of Wood-Framed Structures in a Tornado Sponsored by Simpon Strong-Tie

Shortly after tornadoes struck Joplin, Missouri, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the spring of 2011, research teams began to investigate and document the damage to structures. Their observations, conclusions, and recommendations are summarized in FEMA P-908. This document identifies key structural elements that failed during these extreme wind events and suggests changes to the building codes and construction practices to strengthen them. This presentation will review these weak elements and present details and methods to mitigate damage.

David Finkenbinder - David joined Simpson Strong-Tie in 2007 as a Branch Design Engineer, providing support to 24 states through the Northeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. He is a 2004 graduate of Penn State with a B.S. in Agricultural & Biological Engineering, and a 2007 graduate of Virginia Tech with a M.S. in Civil Engineering with a focus in Structural Engineering. His master’s thesis investigated the splitting strength of bolted connections in solid-sawn lumber and structural composite lumber. Upon gaining licensure as a Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio in 2011, he was promoted to the role of Branch Engineer. He is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Ohio (SEAoO).
