Benefitting First Descents The 2014 Black Canyon of The Bear Whitewater Festival will be held the last week of April 2014 on the Class IV/V section of the Black Canyon of the Bear River near Grace, Idaho. The event will include a down-river race, BBQ, live music, and raffle. All proceeds from the event will be donated to First Descents, a non-profit organization helping young adults battling cancer move beyond their diagnosis and defy their cancer through kayaking, climbing, surfing, and other outdoor activities.

2014 Black Canyon of The Bear Whitewater Festival!

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the 2014 Black Canyon of The Bear Whitewater Festival. We’re stoked to have you on board! The Black Canyon of The Bear Whitewater Festival is a kayaking festival, whitewater race, BBQ, and musical celebration of Southeastern Idaho’s Black Canyon of The Bear River. The event attracts hundreds of kayakers (and even a few rafters) from throughout the intermountain west, including Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Washington, and Oregon. 2014 will mark the third time we’ve held this event. In 2013 we brought together over 100 paddlers and raised more than $3,600, all of which we donated to First Descents, a USA-based non-profit that helps young adults fight cancer through outdoor adventures. The event will tentatively take place on Saturday, April 26, 2014 just outside of Grace, Idaho (the date is subject to change depending on the final release schedule from the dam). The Black Canyon of The Bear River is a solid Class IV whitewater run, with one Class V rapid near the end of the 7-mile stretch. The river only runs a handful of times per year due to a hydropower dam that regulates flow throughout the summer. Fortunately for boaters, the American Whitewater Association and Pacificorp Power have worked out an agreement that will secure a series of scheduled whitewater releases each spring. The sale of food, beverage, and raffle tickets are the main ways we raise money at the event. In 2013 we raffled away prizes including a new Yakima Rack, an AT Eddy kayak paddle, a Suunto Core watch, and a grand prize of a weeklong kayaking expedition package in Ecuador with Small World Adventures. We had dozens of other prizes including life jackets, sunglasses, sleeping pads, solar charging kits, safety equipment, helmets – The list goes on. The Bear River This is a Class IV/V section of whitewater

for advanced and expert paddlers only

The run is about 7 miles long and has no public road access for most of the stretch

The most difficult, or “crux” rapid, is Boo Boo, a Class V rapid about 5 miles in

Grace Falls, an eight-foot waterfall, is about a mile into the run and is easily visible from the highway, making it great for photos

Due to power generation demands, the river rarely has enough water to run. However, scheduled whitewater releases in the canyon began in 2008 thanks to the efforts of the American Whitewater Association and Pacificorp Power

First Descents offers young adult cancer fighters and survivors a free outdoor adventure experience designed to empower them to climb, paddle & surf beyond their diagnosis, defy their cancer, reclaim their lives & connect with others doing the same.
