Rector’s Annual Report Rev. Dr. Dean Pinter

St. Aidan Anglican Church 12 January 2015

Numbers are simple to work with. The books balance or they don’t (they are!); there is a budget surplus or a deficit (I think it was a deficit this year, but as I write this the auditor’s report is not complete); and overall giving is up slightly from last year. In terms of actual numbers of people, here are some specific numbers for 2014: 180 people attended service on Easter morning; 224 people attended Christmas Eve services; 13 people were baptised; 8 people confirmed; 2 couples from the parish were married; and we recorded 16 funerals.

For some people numbers are all that matter. They are simple and, as the old adage goes, they never lie. I don’t agree. I think numbers only tell part of the story and can easily misrepresent reality. Numerical growth of a parish does not necessarily reflect spiritual growth. Offering totals do not necessarily reflect sacrificial giving. Size, as we all may recall, is actually rather inconsequential when it comes to the Gospel. Jesus can do much with little (remember the five loaves and two fish?). I think about this when I consider our parish. By numerical standards we are few and possess relatively little power or wealth. But here is where numbers and size can be misleading; there are much bigger things going on than what we can see. It is like the story of the stable in C.S. Lewis’ book, The Last Battle. After the children were thrust through a stable door as place of imprisonment and death, what they discovered inside was the “real Narnia” where Gospel-shaped inversions occur:

“It seems, then,” said Tirian, smiling to himself, “that the stable seen from within and the stable seen from without are two different places.” “Yes,” said the Lord Digory. “Its inside is bigger than its outside.” “Yes,” said Queen Lucy. “In our world too, a stable once had something inside it that was bigger than our whole world.”

Page 8: 2014 Annual Report - Amazon Web Services · Leona Shepherd nominates Fr. Dean Pinter as Chairperson. Bob Currie seconds the nomination. Carried. Election of Secretary Carla Hoffmann

8

Much like that stable, if we look at our parish from the outside and by the numbers it can, to some eyes, appear quite small and insignificant. That is, unless you look at it with eyes alert to the Gospel and ears attuned to Story. In order to get closer to the real story of the life of a parish, one must be willing to listen – sometimes at length – to individuals by observing them on a regular basis and praying often together with them. As I spend time with you day-to-day and week-to-week I hear your stories, watch your lives, and observe (most of the time) good fruit, even in the midst of significant physical, relational, or spiritual trials. I have been reading Philip Yancey’s book, Vanishing Grace. In it he recalls a survey (the numbers again!) in which people were asked “what words they would most like to hear. He predicted the first choice: ‘I love you.’ Number two was ‘I forgive you.’ The third choice took him by surprise: ‘Supper’s ready.’ It dawned on [him] that these three statements provide a neat summary of the gospel story. We are loved by God, forgiven by God, and invited to the banquet table. In the midst of a planet marked by brokenness – violence, natural disasters, ruptured relationships – the gospel is truly good news. Like an iPod listener dancing in a subway station full of glum commuters, a Christian hears a different sound, of joy and laughter on the other side of pain and death.”

As I reflect on this year I am grateful to be part of a parish that loves, that forgives, and that feeds. I see this in so many of the healthy ministries within our parish: our prayer chain, the pastoral care team, in Godly Play and the Nursery, amongst our burgeoning Youth Group, with our faithful Altar Guild, amongst our diligent building committee, our energetic Living the Mission R3 team, our winsome music ministers, and together with our active Vestry, our wise Wardens, and our thoughtful Treasurer – and so many more! I also see these healthy traits in new ministries like Aidan’s Table led by Tony & Amy Creech, our Compline Choir led by Lowana Porter, and as we prepare the first group of people as licensed Lay Readers. As I look ahead to 2015 my hope is to continue to help nurture love, forgiveness, and celebration around the Table and many other household tables in the parish. As we do so, we certainly will have to be attentive to the numbers, but I pray that we will also be able to notice with Gospel-tuned eyes and ears that St. Aidan’s “inside is bigger than its outside.”

Let’s kick-off another good year together!

Deacon’s Report 2014

Recently the daily “Word” for the day emailed to me from the Society of St. John the Evangelist was this:

Servant - In loving Christ, we reach forward beyond ourselves, beyond our own life, into the greater life of Christ. From

lesser into greater...Love, in all its manifestations is the ultimate reaching beyond ourselves.

-Br. Mark Brown Society of Saint John the Evangelist

The ministry of a deacon is that of a servant, the reaching forward beyond ourselves to Christ. A parish, in raising up a

deacon, recognizes its call to servanthood. A deacon never ministers alone, but with

a parish of diaconal people and together they reach beyond ourselves to Christ and in

that they hear their call to minister - to each other and to those in the community and

the world. That reaching out together in love is so obvious here at St. Aidan.

When I go on a pastoral care visit, the worship booklets have been produced by

Sandra Warnock, the Altar Guild members have provided clean linens and

communion supplies. When I give a holding cross to someone, Chris Hoyes has

made it. When I incorporate music in a care home service, one of our musicians

is with me and many of you pray with and for me as I go.

This doesn’t just apply to the pastoral care, but to all areas of our ministry.

Baptism is another example. From our

young people to our seniors, we all

reach out with the love of Christ and

have a role in bringing others to know

and commit their lives to Christ

promising to walk in his footsteps.

Some other examples of our joint

ministry this year include:

Coffee Fellowship

Quoting Paul’s words to the Philippians, Br. Brown went on to write: “…forgetting what lies behind and straining forward

to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” Together we press

toward that goal and through Christ and as he works in and through us, lives are impacted and transformed – yes, even our

own. You will never know the impact your prayers, love and care had on me as I hobbled around this year with my broken

foot. In you, I intimately experienced the love of Christ in ways I never expected. Thank you.

This year, in addition to liturgical and every day parish responsibilities, I participated in baptismal and confirmation

preparation, officiated at 10 funerals and assisted with 2, attended the Qu`Appelle School of Mission and Ministry classes,

provided pastoral care and home communions at Providence Place, Chateau St. Michael, Mulberry Estates and for some shut

-ins at home. In May Bishop Rob appointed me Regional Missioner, functioning as the Regional Dean in the Deanery of

Souris which takes me out of the parish occasionally to worship and work with parishes in Assiniboia, Ogema, Avonlea and

Weyburn in addition to St. Aidan.

As always, it is a privilege and honor to serve with each of you. Let us go forth keeping our eyes on the greater, Christ

himself, our light, our life, our love and our truth.

Serving with you:” Deacon Arleen Champion

Wardens’ Report (2014)

Although the individuals called are frail, the position of the warden is a sacred one arguably finding its origins in the New Testament and early Christian church. This ministry finds its function in a sort of “in- betweenness,” that is, the warden is called to serve both the priest and, equally so, the members of the parish. Collectively we aim to do so and, within this context, I (Brian) would like to focus on the theme of service at St Aidan and in our broader communities. It is very easy to begin with our clergy. As wardens, we are truly grateful for our spiritual leaders: Father Dustin for his call to pray and to teach and for the visionary gifts that he has; Deacon Arleen for the work of her busy hands and large heart; and Father Dean for his ongoing example of how the heart and the mind may serve God’s Kingdom. Each vestry meeting begins with clergy reports and, although they are brief, it is clear that the clergy at St Aidan are both gifted and active in exercising those gifts. This example is enormously meaningful. The past year was dominated by the church building project, both in seeing the new hall move toward completion and in beginning the fundraising campaign that will lead toward the completion of the kitchen, a lower hall devoted to teaching and youth, and structural improvements that will allow the church building to move confidently into its second century of existence. Numerous hands and hearts have participated in this venture, but, in particular, we are grateful to Tara Gish and her team who have so ably led the R3 campaign. As I’ve watched Tara undertake her duties, it is easy to be thankful for her particular gifts in this area (and, likewise, to be reminded of the enormous devotion that marks her work for the parish). The corollary to our fundraising venture is, of course, our building project itself and it is particularly appropriate to note the efforts of John, David, and the Building Committee during this past year. Finally, as I complete my term as warden,

it is a particular delight to honour Leona Shepherd and Carla Hoffmann who embody

so much of what it means to serve faithfully within our context. Carla and Leona are of

the sort who are the backbone of any healthy church. Their sense of service manifests

itself in practical events like organizing and preparing Sunday lunch (which, after

several years, shows no sign of slowing down—a truly extraordinary testimony!),

securing volunteers for numerous duties, planting and tending flowers, sitting on

several committees, and a dozen other such duties.

11

But their service is not confined to the ordinary; each month we gather twice to think

and pray through important decisions that

inevitably shape the parish in profound ways.

Carla and Leona never miss a meeting and most

often bring godly wisdom and insight to the topic

at hand. My sense is that there has been a good

deal of joy in all this and, as we’ve gathered as

wardens, as an executive, and as a vestry, we’ve

discussed important and mundane items, eaten

and prayed together, and shared burdens and

laughed. As one of them said to me recently, “I

love being a warden.” Those are powerful words

indeed, particularly when the opposite could so

easily be the case. Thanks be to God.

Pastoral Care Annual Report 2014

Pastoral caregivers continue to carry out monthly visits to Capilano Court, Chateau St. Michael, Chez Nous, Extendicare, Oxford Place, Pioneer Lodge and Providence Place. Clergy, and lay people who are licensed to administer reserved sacrament, provide communion at most care homes.

As in previous years, Easter cards were delivered to people unable to attend at worship services – this year we delivered 25 cards. Another annual delivery is the Christmas flowers, and they are always well-received. Our Sunday School children take part in this event by making the Christmas cards to go with the flowers, and our Stitch and Chatter group makes the containers for the flowers. This year we delivered 27 bundles of flowers, five of which were taken to people who experienced the death of a spouse.

Hospital visiting is done weekly by three people, on a rotation basis. One of our valued caregivers, Agnes Ingleby retired this year. Thank you, Agnes, for your years of dedicated visiting.

Our transportation service continues, assisting people to attend Sunday worship. As always Sherril Land does an excellent job of the grief card ministry, and this year has sent out 36 cards.

This year we had an intern at St. Aidan, Nate Wall, who was interested in doing some visiting. He accompanied Lorraine to Chez Nous a few times and to the hospital one week. He said he found these experiences to be very helpful as it was a ministry he hadn’t had much opportunity to be involved in and he was glad to be able to pray with the people visited. The seniors he visited enjoyed his company – as one of our parishioners remarked, “I don’t often have handsome young men coming by to see me!” A special thank you goes to Fr. Dustin Resch for taking communion to Extendicare and for his support of the pastoral care group. We will miss having Fr. Dustin as part of this ministry.

We have been strongly supported and encouraged by Fr. Dean and Deacon Arleen throughout the year, and for that we are very grateful.

Children’s Ministry Report for the year 2014

In 2014, the children in the Godly Play groups were as follows: Younger Godly Play group – Age 3 to Grade 1 Older Godly Play group – Grade 2 to Grade 5 Nursery for children under 3 or about that age. We wait until the Fall when our new “year” begins in September to decide if those who have turned 3 years old over the course of the year are ready to take part in Godly Play. The age groups are not written in stone; the age divisions may change from year to year depending on how many children there are of each age. Godly Play teachers for 2014 were Bev Murdock, Erin Ortlund, Hannah Elich, Cora Melanson, and Ellen Redshaw. Attendance varies from Sunday to Sunday but we have families with the following numbers and ages of children. I may be off on a few of these numbers: Nursery – 8 children Younger Godly Play group – 10 children Older Godly Play group – 8 children

Youth Ministry Annual Report 2014 St. Aidan Anglican Church, Moose Jaw, SK | Prepared by Luke Johnson

Purpose and Goals The purpose of this ministry is to foster mature faith in the young people of St. Aidan Anglican

Church, and to equip them to become mature participants in its life and ministry. Our focus is

spiritual formation and community-building, seeking to help young people to grow deep roots in

the Church and to understand the importance and challenge of cruciform living. Our goal is not

merely to entertain; it is rather to walk with the young people of St. Aidan (and those from other

churches who make this youth group their own) as we learn together what it means to follow

Christ in all areas of our lives. As such, this ministry is characterized by three essential

components:

Taking God seriously: Each week we spend a significant amount of time reading and

discussing scripture, praying together and learning to pray, and challenging ourselves

and each other to follow Jesus.

Taking each other seriously: As a Christian community of young people, we want to learn

to appreciate who each other are, how we can support each other, and to learn to see

Christ in each other.

Taking our tradition seriously: The youth ministry year is structured according to the

Christian Year, shaping our time together by the “big questions” of each season. We

regularly celebrate and learn from the lives of the saints, feast days, liturgical rites,

creeds, and spiritual disciplines within the Anglican tradition (such as compline prayer).

Youth ministry at St. Aidan takes place primarily in two settings:

Youth Group and Youth Sunday School.

Youth Group

Youth Group is crafted primarily for young people in grades 6-12. But since grade or age does

not always accurately gauge a young person's maturity, this is not a hard-and-fast ministry

boundary.

The following five elements are the foundation of youth ministry at St. Aidan.

Page 15: 2014 Annual Report - Amazon Web Services · Leona Shepherd nominates Fr. Dean Pinter as Chairperson. Bob Currie seconds the nomination. Carried. Election of Secretary Carla Hoffmann

15

1. Weekly youth nights: Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00pm, September to June, we meet most

typically at St. Aidan for time together, food, group activities, scriptural study, and

prayer.

2. Small groups: The larger group is split into age- or maturity-specific small groups led

by youth leaders. These small groups are designed to help relationships flourish between

young people of common age, and to be able to share in prayer, scripture, and each

other’s lives in ways that are not possible in a large group, or in mixed company.

3. Socials: To encourage community-formation, we enjoy social events together roughly

every 6 weeks. These prove to be effective ‘first-contact’ nights for newcomers. To date,

we’ve gone skating, swimming, bowling, kayaking, had “guys’ night” and “girls’ night”

and more.

4. Retreats: Twice a year we conduct over-night and multiple-overnight events during

which we can more intensely focus on growing together in prayer, worship, study, and

fun. In 2014 we held our second annual Fall Retreat at Cypress Hills Camp (Cypress

Hills Provincial Park), and our first Spring Retreat at Echo Lake Bible Camp (north of

Regina).

5. One-on-One discipleship: Our youth leadership team seeks to connect with our young

people in a variety of ways outside of official, weekly meeting times for the joy of

encouraging each other, and to be able to more thoughtfully pray for one another.

Leadership Youth Minister: Luke Johnson

306-756-3442 (work), 306-313-1362 (cell), [email protected]

As Youth Minister, Luke is responsible for setting the long-term goals and vision for the ministry,

for cultivating a safe and nurturing community environment, for pastoral care of the youth group

as a whole, and for orchestrating and leading youth events throughout the year. Luke’s role as

Youth Minister is regulated by a Memorandum of Understanding between himself and St. Aidan.

Administrative Support: Jennifer Johnson

306-313-1362 (cell), [email protected]

Jennifer provides administrative support, which includes weekly coordination of volunteers who

provide youth night snacks and leader suppers, booking of venues for out-of-church events, day-to

-day management of the youth ministry budget, and coordinating rides to events for leaders and

young people.

16

Youth Leaders

Youth Leaders are responsible for leading small groups as part of weekly youth nights, and for

assisting Luke in pastoral care and in fostering the healthy growth of the youth group community.

In 2013/2014 (Season 2), our youth leadership team included Sara Golding (then, Artiga), Corbin

Golding, Amy Bird, and Matthew VanderKwaak. In 2014/2015 (Season 3), our youth leaders are

Amy Bird, Matthew VanderKwaak, Steve Porter, and Shelby Peifer.

Budget This past year we have operated on a budget of $3,000 which covered snack food and drinks for

Tuesday youth nights, subsidies for socials and youth retreats (for young people who could not

otherwise take part), event supplies, training materials, and volunteer youth leader appreciation.

2014 Summary Our youth group consists of about 15-20 young people from St. Aidan, The Gathering (in

Caronport), Caron Community Church, St. Barnabas, and other Moose Jaw churches. There are

approximately 10-16 young people who regularly attend Tuesday youth nights. In 2014, we put on

31 youth nights, 4 socials, and 2 youth retreats.

Highlights from 2014

Leader Suppers

Beginning in September 2014, our youth leadership team meets at 5:15pm on Tuesdays to enjoy

supper together before the youth night begins. This time allows us to chat about the night ahead, to

be mindful of young people who might need special attention, and to be aware of how each of us

are fairing as we head into a night of ministry. We have been so encouraged week by week by the

generous provision of delicious food by St. Aidan parishioners.

St. Aidan Service Leadership

A few times in 2014, the youth group was invited to lead St. Aidan’s celebration of special events.

During Holy Week in 2014, the youth group (along with Luke and the youth leaders), led the Holy

Tuesday Taizé service. On December 19, the youth group also participated in Advent Vespers.

These opportunities are valuable for our young people as they grow in their familiarity with formal

settings, and in their confidence in leading others. (And it is genuinely fun and profound to watch

our young men and women lead their fellow parishioners in worship.)

Page 17: 2014 Annual Report - Amazon Web Services · Leona Shepherd nominates Fr. Dean Pinter as Chairperson. Bob Currie seconds the nomination. Carried. Election of Secretary Carla Hoffmann

17

"Stronger Together 2014" conference

September 29-October 2, Luke Johnson and Julie Moser attended a national Anglican/Lutheran

conference in Winnipeg on developing sustainable youth ministry. While it was surprising to

learn how little Christian youth ministry goes on in Canada's Anglican and Lutheran churches, it

was encouraging to be able to share our experience and ministry resources with people across the

country who are attempting to establish youth ministries.

Instructed Eucharist

On October 14, Fr. Dean led us in an Instructed Eucharist. Youth leaders and young people alike

were fascinated to learn about the symbolism in St. Aidan's worship space, and the different parts

of the Eucharistic service. At the end, we got to partake in the Eucharist together. We hope to

include an Instructed Eucharist as a regular, annual event in the future.

"Mystery Epiphaners"

As part of our celebration of the revelation of Jesus in Epiphany 2014, our youth group was

visited by a number of "Mystery Epiphaners" from St. Aidan who shared how Jesus has revealed

himself in their lives. These Epiphaners included Ian O'Brien, Katie Rains, and Glady

MacDonald. After hearing these stories, our young people shared their own stories with one

another in the final week of Epiphany. This was such a profoundly encouraging way to celebrate

Epiphany that we plan to invite "Mystery Epiphaners" to join us every year.

Revitalization of St. Aidan's Youth Room

In mid-September, 24 premium folding chairs were donated for the youth room, replacing the

cumbersome couches, and allowing the room to become flexible and dynamic ministry space. A

few weeks later we received a donation of paint for the youth room, and several volunteers spent

an entire Saturday giving the room a fresh new look. We are so grateful for the many people in

this parish who so generously give of their time and resources to help to build and strengthen St.

Aidan's ministry to young people!

Youth Sunday School

Sunday school is designed for young people in grades 6-12, taking place most Sundays from

September to June, from the dismissal in the service (just before the first reading) until The Peace

-- about 10:45-11:20. The Sunday school time is guided by a simple liturgy that proceeds through

similar elements as the service upstairs, seeking to remain in close continuity with St. Aidan’s

worship service. Sunday school takes a break on all high church days in order to encourage young

people to participate with the full St. Aidan body (e.g., first Sunday of Advent, Epiphany Sunday,

Easter Sunday, baptisms, confirmations, etc.).

We are the team of people you first meet when coming to worship at St. Aidan. If you are coming to worship or just walking by

outside, the Outside Greeters enjoy sharing the

gospel through warm welcome and hospitality, even

on the coldest of days.

Once inside the church, you will be greeted by other

members of our team who strive to make sure you

are comfortable and feel at home in God’s house;

that you have what you physically need to worship and can find what your way around the

building.

As a parish, we recognize the importance of a warm and

welcoming environment where people can come and meet God

in our space, our liturgy and in each other. We work together

to foster this with the Welcoming Team being assisted by the

remainder of the parish reaching out in friendship to those

guests God brings to St. Aidan.

The Welcoming Team is on the front line though. It is those

first few minutes from the time you approach the church to

being seated and preparing yourself for worship that greatly

impact the experience you have during the rest of your visit. It

is our goal that you will feel at home, that you will experience

the love of Christ in us and that that will aid you in opening

yourself to the moving of God’s Spirit in your life during your

time at St. Aidan.

22 members serve on this team. It is an honor to serve God and his people with them. I

invite you to regularly pray for God’s blessing on them as they extend the welcome of Christ

and seek him in those they meet knowing that they are welcoming Christ Himself.

If at any time, you feel called to serve as part of this team, or would like to at least explore it,

please feel free to speak with me, Deacon Arleen, or any member of the Welcoming Team.

As we welcome people to our church, we also welcome new members to our team.

Serving with you, Arleen Champion+

Music Ministry Report for the year 2014

2014 has been a very good year in the music ministry area of St. Aidan. We’ve added variety to our music, added people who wish to be involved but yet being sensitive if people only want to be involved once a month or once every other month.

Rhoda Cairns has joined us and plays keyboard about once a month. Rhoda Cairns (keyboard/piano) and Kyra Van Hanegem (flute) have been a blessing to the music ministry of St. Aidan as they provide the prelude music about once a month. Kyra also plays flute during the service on many Sundays of the month. Rhoda and Kyra have been a welcome addition to our music ministry at St. Aidan.

Amy Creech and her worship team with Matthew Vanderkwaak on guitar and Thom Macfarlane on drums have led us in some of the Sunday morning music once a month about every 2 months. We’ve spent time at our Wednesday night practices having Amy and Matthew teach us some new songs. It’s been a delight to have them involved. Not only have they led us in contemporary music at our 10:30 a.m. Sunday service but also led us in hymns in a different style and rhythm with guitar as lead instrument (“O Come, O Come Emmanuel” during Advent).

Sandra Warnock is our main pipe organist on Sunday mornings. Sheila McCarthy plays keyboard as well as fill-in for pipe organ when needed. The choir remains a faithful group coming to practices and being at church to lead in much of the music on Sunday mornings for most of the Sundays of the year. We use all styles of music from Taizé to John Bell songs to hymns.

During the season of Advent, at the Advent Lessons and Carols service we did something different by having 2 of the music pieces as anthems instead of congregational singing. The anthem choir was under the guidance of Lowana Porter. I personally felt that having 2 of the songs done in anthem style was a great way to add to the Lessons and Carols format, as well as a way to have other people involved in the music at St. Aidan who may only want to be involved once in awhile.

Our two Christmas Eve services brought two very different styles of music leadership, something that we should be proud of at St. Aidan due to the musical gifts we are blessed with in our congregation. The 7:00 pm service was led by the choir, accompanied by Sandra on organ. The 11:00 pm service was led by Cody Matchett (guitar and vocals). Rhoda and Kyra provided the prelude music and also instrumental music during communion at the 11:00 pm service.

If you are interested in being involved with the music at St. Aidan, please let me know. This may simply be adding a guitar to some of the songs on a Sunday morning. In particular, prelude instrumental music with different combinations of instruments is something where I’d like to see growth at St. Aidan in 2015. This would only be a commitment of about once a month, or even once every 5 or 6 weeks. What I would like to see is not just a piano player but a piano along with a flute (2 people other than Rhoda and Kyra), or piano and oboe, or guitar and harp, or whatever combinations would work, it could be duo or trio. Perhaps you are a musical family that plays various instruments that can practice together and provide prelude music about once a month, or friends that can get together to practice and provide instrumental music for the prelude music.

“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!”

St. Aidan Compline Prayer

This year, a sung evening prayer service - Compline - was held in the spring under the

wonderful direction of Barbara Swanson. In September, a small Compline choir of

about 8-10 singers was formed and Compline services were held monthly from October

through December. It was a wonderful time of participation with the Church of ages

past in this rich tradition as we learned to pray through song. Also, Lowana Porter, our

director, tried her hand at writing a new setting for the hymn text “Now God Be With Us”

and the choir performed it beautifully as an anthem. We hope to train new cantors and

grow the choir in 2015 with the plans to continue the services monthly.

Respectfully submitted,

Lowana Porter

ALTAR GUILD ANNUAL REPORT 2014

As members of the Altar Guild our ministry is to serve our Lord and the church. This ministry involves setting and clearing off the table at which we are all fed, this being either on Sundays or when it is required. We wash the vessels and linens, attend to the flowers for the Altar in memory of our loved ones. Arrange for flowers at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Leona Shepherd does the wonderful job of decorating the church for these occasions. Thank you Leona. If you wish to be part of this ministry it requires about 1 hour a week of your time. We have 2 groups that work 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. We encourage you to prayerfully consider serving the Altar Guild if you feel called to this ministry. It is a ministry of commitment and dedication to our Lord. You can contact Father Dean or Elaine Deans at 306-693-4496.

Respectfully submitted, Elaine Deans, President

Meals on Wheels

For many years Five Hills Health Region has provided nutritionally, well-balanced meals to a number of people in Moose Jaw. St. Aidan has been assisting them with this program over the years. Meals are prepared at the hospital and placed in “warming carriers” which are labeled with each client’s name and address. Volunteers pick up the meals at 11:45 a.m. at the south entrance to the Union Hospital. A volunteer team, consisting of a driver and a runner, choose the route that they wish to do. The city is divided into two routes. Each route has between five and seven meals so it doesn’t take long to complete the delivery. When all of the meals have been delivered the meal containers are returned to the hospital. St. Aidan volunteers to do this twice a year. The dates for 2015 are April 20 to 25 and September 28 to October 3. Watch for sign-up sheets approximately three weeks ahead of these dates.

Anyone interested in helping with this outreach program can contact Sharleen at 306-692-6218. Thank you to those who faithfully volunteer to drive and deliver the meals.

Annual Report Stitch & Chatter/ Dorcas Group Our ladies were very busy again this year making afghans, baby articles, hats, sweaters, etc. These items were all sent to the Gordon Reserve along with gift cards to make other purchases. We also donated $ 350.00 to the Youth Group to help fund some of their activities. The ladies also prepared containers for the December flower delivery. We meet in the Lower Hall on the first and third Monday of most months to share a time of fellowship and do our stitchery. Everyone donates a toonie at each meeting and also when some of our handiwork has been purchased all money raised is donated back to the church. Please join us and share a time of fellowship and a cup of tea at 1:15 pm. in the Lower Hall on the first and third Mondays of the month.

PRAYER CHAIN

St. Aidan prayer chain provides additional prayer support for those who request it. Whether your request is for family or friends, it is advisable, if possible, to get their permission to be placed on the prayer chain or any of the other options that are available. Prayer request slips are available at the back of the church which you fill out by naming the person whom you want prayers for, including full or partial names. You may check off the area to which you want your prayer request to go, being, the intercessory prayers in ‘Prayers of the People’ during the worship service on Sundays, or, name placed in the bulletin in ‘Prayers for Those in Need’, or lastly, prayers through the ‘Prayer Chain’, where specifics may be given. Your request should then be placed in the Prayer Box provided (at the back of the church). The prayers given to the intercessors on the prayer chain are confidential and need to be updated if the request is longer than two weeks. St. Aidan Parish Prayer Cycle booklet is available to use in your own personal prayer time and is available on the table by the north entry to the church. Please sign for your prayer booklet in order to be notified of changes. Intercessory prayer continues to be an ongoing ministry within our parish. Thanksgiving to those who are part of this ministry. If this is a ministry that is on your heart, take action and become a prayer warrior.

Communications Annual Report 2014 Ministries carried out by this group:

In 2014 we advertised weekly services and events for St. Aidan in the Moose Jaw Express. Our ad was found on the weather page. A decision has been made, in consultation with the vestry, to no longer advertise in Moose Jaw Express on a weekly basis but rather to advertise special services in the year. We will be looking into other ways to make our presence known in the community.

The pamphlets, “ Welcome to St. Aidan,” found in the pews are an example of information for guests. For someone who is new to St. Aidan this pamphlet provides a way to become acquainted with the order of service and through this find the worship service more meaningful. Offertory Envelopes found in the pew racks are available for the convenience of guests and occasionally for parishioners who don’t have their envelope.

The free standing signs on the east side of the church and near the High Street entrance were put in place in October. They advertise the regular worship services, as well as special services and events. We hope the close proximity of the signs to the sidewalk serves as an invitation to passers-by.

As was mentioned in last year’s report we began to consider signage for the east wall of the building. Because the office and parish hall entrances are on the east side, identification of the church building is essential. Near the end of 2014 letters for the sign arrived at Murray Signs and will be installed early in 2015.

An ongoing communication tool is the bulletin board at the back of the church which is managed by Administrative Assistant Sandra Warnock. Here you will find parish, diocesan and community information.

We are the contact group for St. Aidan website: www.mjanglican.org. Take a look at the website. You can read a beautiful piece by Luke Johnson: “What I’ve Learned after two years as a youth minister”. You can find out about upcoming events. The ministry schedule is there for you to read and/or download. There are photos of St. Aidan events.

What’s New on the Website? A review of 2014 submitted by webmaster Luke Johnson: This year our website's traffic increased by more than 100%. Last year our website received just over 12,000 page views, while this year it received well over 26,000. Because of the enormous increase in website traffic from mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets), we have begun work on a new, mobile-friendly version of the website, and expect it to launch some time before Easter 2015. Since more than 50% of all internet website traffic now comes from mobile devices, it is a form of missional hospitality to greet newcomers and inquirers with a website ready for whatever kind of device they use to find us.

If you would like to have a St. Aidan event posted on the website you can contact Luke directly at [email protected] or you can talk to one of the communications group listed below:

Treasurer’s Report The state of St Aidan finances is encouraging. Though we still show a deficit, it is a

smaller one than last year. We met our monthly budgeted giving goals 42% of the time

and that is a vast improvement over last year. As our new parish hall is nearing

completion and we look forward to all the possibilities it may hold for us as a congregation

and as a facility used by the wider community. It is an exciting time.

The story of our finances is a story that is basic to the strength and survival of St Aidan. It

is however, also the story of dreams: we dream of growing a stronger church with active

programs for everyone; we dream of an expanded youth group and a strong Godly Play

program; we dream of a busy learning centre, of sending forth lay readers; we dream of

having a liturgist in our employ.

As Paul told the Corinthian Christians to give as they had prospered, we must ask

ourselves the same: how much money does God call you to give? What percentage of

your income is God calling you to contribute?

I challenge you to think about what you are giving today and to think about taking one

more step. If we all increased what we are now giving by just 10%, our budget needs

would be met. If you currently give $10 per week, would you consider giving $11 per

week? If you currently give $100 per month, would you give $110? These are small

changes but when we put it all together they make a big difference. Please give this

serious consideration.

As you consider these questions, I offer this prayer:

Stir us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas, where storms will show your

mastery; where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the

horizons of our hopes and to push us into the future in strength, courage, hope and love.

Amen

Let us ask God, when it comes time to ask Him for something, to help us to be generous.

--- Mother Teresa.

Respectfully Submitted, Janet Cockerell, Treasurer.
