I end my second year as Chairman of Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis on a note of great pride.

For the second year in a row, Variety has received an “exceptional” rating from Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest and most relied upon independent evaluator of charities. This four-star rating places Variety in elite company: only 19 percent of charities have received this designation at least two years in a row.

Charity Navigator scores nonprofits based on their financial efficiency and transparency. A four-star designation spotlights Variety as an organization that serves as an exceptional steward of the money that it raises.

Many charities champion admirable causes. But it takes a truly inspired organization to use every tool at its disposal to fulfill its mission. Variety is one such nonprofit.

While 2014 also marked my final year as Variety’s chairman of the board, I take with me an enormous wealth of satisfaction in the work I’ve seen accomplished on behalf of children with disabilities. In getting to know the Variety staff and the families they serve, I have gained great insight and inspiration.

I wish my successor, Bank of America’s Larry Otto, the best of luck in 2015. I look forward to continuing to support the powerful work of Variety in the future. Greg Boyce Chairman of the Board

When I look back on 2014, I think of 9-year-old Nick in his bright yellow-and-blue Flounder costume, starring in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Before this past year, Nick was Variety’s secret superstar. Born with brittle bone disease, 28 of his bones were broken at birth. But his fragile body contains a bright and agile mind that never fails to delight. His witty quips and ad-libs made him a sensation at Variety events.

But then he took the stage as one of the lead performers in our Variety Children’s Theatre production of The Little Mermaid. The show sold out all five of its performances at the Touhill Performing Arts Center — 7,100 tickets in all — and Nick stole every one of them. More than holding his own against some of St. Louis’ top musical theatre actors, Nick upended our audiences’ expectations of what children with disabilities can achieve.

Now people stop him on the street because they recognize him from the show! For a boy with aspirations of one day hosting his own television show, this newfound fame is a beautiful dream come true.

On or off the stage, 2014 was a year in which Variety gave thousands of St. Louis children the chance to flip the script on what the world expects of them.

Our “TREES” model continues to open up bright new avenues for kids with disabilities. Therapy — in a gym, in the pool, or on horseback — strengthens their muscles.

Recreation gives them new opportunities to explore and socialize, like at Variety Adventure Camp. Education provides for opportunities like Nick’s star-making turn in Variety Children’s Theatre. Equipment powers kids forward with new tools to further their independence. And Variety’s trademark Sunshine Coach Vans get them where they need to go.

Variety kids are all stars. Through our programs, we give them the chance to shine. Through your support those programs can come alive and grow each year. It’s all for the kids! Thank you! Sincerely, Jan Albus Chief Executive Officer

Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis is a multi-faceted organization with one simple mission: To help local children with disabilities reach their full potential by providing services every time they need assistance.

Mission

We help kids with disabilities gain the needed tools to thrive. Therapy, Recreation, Equipment, Education and Sunshine Coach Vans; or TREES.

Therapy

Variety funds therapy including speech, physical, occupational, equine and aqua therapies through the TherHappy Kids program.

T

Variety develops recreational programs that provide one-on-one attention and unique experiences including Variety Adventure Camp.

Recreation

R

Variety gifts medical equipment to enhance mobility and independence, ultimately allowing our children to live out their day-to-day experiences with greater ease.

Equipment

EEducation

Variety provides education for and about children with disabilities through efforts such as the Champions for Children Summit, Variety Children’s Theatre and the Emerson Resource Center.

ESunshine Coach Vans

Variety allocates Sunshine Coach Vans to partner agencies to transport children across the St. Louis area to doctor appointments and therapy sessions.

Variety’s Commitment to our Community

How Variety Helps

Variety DIRECTLY serves kids with disabilities

through Variety programs.

Direct ServicesVariety funds OUTREACH programs with our partner

agencies within the greater St. Louis area.

Outreach ServicesAND

When Variety commits to a child, we commit to improving every facet of his or her daily life. Not only do we offer DIRECT services that provide things like new equipment or Variety Adventure Camp, we also support thousands of additional children through OUTREACH with our partner agencies.

Take 10-year-old Landon as an example. This winter, he received a new therapeutic bicycle from Variety as part of Variety’s direct Bikes for Kids program. His new ride will make a lasting impact on his life, improving his muscle strength and bolstering his independence. But when Landon puts his bike away and goes to school, Variety is still there for him. That’s because Landon attends school through one of Variety’s funded partner agencies. Outreach funding from Variety has allowed his school to purchase new equipment to continue providing top-quality education for kids with hearing impairments.

At work or at play, Variety assists awesome kids like Landon. That’s what we mean when we talk about supporting the “WHOLE CHILD!”

Independence

With every therapy session and piece of equipment, Variety moves children toward a lifetime of getting things done for themselves.

Variety programs help kids tackle new challenges without fear or doubt. We encourage kids to be stars, both on stage and in their everyday lives.

Self-Esteem

Playing catch. Brushing teeth. Hugging a parent. These may seem like small acts, but developing skills like these allow Variety kids to enjoy childhood to its fullest.

Skills

No kid should ever have to go it alone. Variety programs bring children with disabilities together to create lasting and powerful friendships.

Socialization

For three weeks, Kimira practiced stacking towers of blocks. She worked on zipping up her jacket. She clicked away at a tablet, drawing

lines and connecting dots.

These were all simple tasks for Kimira, a sunny 3-year-old who’s always making new friends. But this time, something was dramatically different: she was

using her right hand.

Without an innovative form of therapy paid for as part of Variety’s TherHappy Kids program, this might never have been possible.

Kimira was born with hemiparesis, or a weakness in an entire side of the body. The right half of her body is noticeably weaker than her left, which means she almost

always leads with her left hand and holds back her right as a last resort.

Kimira’s mother, Carol, has been on a quest to bring the two halves of her daughter’s body into balance. At home, she’s constantly

reminding Kimira to “use righty.”

Then Kimira’s neurologist suggested trying out a unique form of treatment: constraint induced movement therapy. For

three weeks, Kimira’s left arm would be placed in a bright pink cast. This would force her to use her right hand in

situations where she’d never used it before. On a daily basis, she’d go to a therapy session to participate in supervised play

with a therapist.

The cast was scary at first, but Kimira adjusted. More importantly, at the end of her three weeks of therapy, Carol saw Kimira begin to

use her right hand all by herself — no “use righty” necessary.

Variety paid for Kimira’s therapy as part of TherHappy Kids, a direct service which supports

impactful therapy programs that families’ health insurance cannot cover. Thanks to her three weeks in the

cast, Kimira is that much closer to living with a balanced body.

“She’s a very happy child,” Carol says. “I want her to be as close to normal as possible. I don’t want her to be teased for anything.”

This summer, 5-year-old Gabe streaked into Variety Adventure Camp with all the flash of a comic book superhero.

His powers? Tenacity, spirit and definitely speed.

Born without legs, Gabe has a wheelchair but rarely sits still long enough to use it. Instead, he straps on what his mother Carrie calls his “boot.” It’s a hard plastic molding that fits snugly around the bottom of his torso, with a pair of skateboard wheels attached.

From there, it’s off to the races, with Gabe propelling himself along the floor with sheer upper body strength. At Adventure Camp, Gabe used his boot to fly over gym floors, across ice skating rinks and into the hearts of counselors, staff and his fellow campers.

Variety’s Adventure Camp motto is “I CAN.” It’s a place where campers with disabilities of all kinds get to play together with no restrictions on their capabilities — and it’s 100% free to attend. With his thirst for thrills and refusal to limit himself, Gabe lives that motto every day. This direct program gave him the chance to push himself to the fullest while making new friends.

“Gabe attends a general education classroom,” Carrie says. “So it was eye-opening for him to see other kids who have challenges. It was a chance for him to not feel so separate, but to feel included. It made a huge difference that he wasn’t the only one.”

Carrie uses the word “challenges” deliberately. That’s how she and the rest of her family view Gabe’s disability: as a challenge to be overcome. They encourage Gabe to problem solve at home, positioning stools so he can climb up on furniture or grab items off counters. Gabe is also blossoming into quite an athlete, taking part in gymnastics lessons and sled hockey.

At Adventure Camp, Gabe rode a pony, swam and even participated in a magic act in front of the entire camp! More than any of his other “superpowers,” fearlessness is what defines Gabe.

“We want him to have the attitude that he can do anything or try anything,” Carrie says. “He can keep up with typically developing kids.”

Clayton winds up, a bouncy ball clutched in his right hand, and flings it as hard as he can at his twin brother Mason.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective), the ball falls short and hits the chair that Mason is sitting on instead.

“Shoot!” Clayton grumbles. “Hey, keep trying,” Mason says. “50 points for hitting the chair.”

This is not a traditional form of physical therapy. But for these two 10-year-old siblings, it works.

Clayton was born with arthrogryposis, a condition that severely hinders mobility of a child’s joints. For many kids with this condition, their joints are stuck in a contracted position, with little muscle built up around them to help them move. For Clayton, this has created complications for all four of his limbs.

But thanks to multiple surgeries and intense therapy, he’s beginning to develop the

ability to stand on his own. And thanks to equipment paid for by Variety, his

arms are about to catch up with his legs.

Clayton uses a mobile arm support on his

right arm, which is what helps him

maneuver his power

wheelchair, feed himself, write, or even chuck projectiles at his twin brother. It resembles a piece of plastic armor, connected by a series of rods and joints to Clayton’s wheelchair. Carefully installed rubber bands create a tension that assists Clayton in lifting his arm. Variety paid for this piece of equipment through its direct Kids on the Go Mobility Program.

“Him tossing that ball at Mason is a big deal,” Clayton’s mother Brenda says. “It may seem inappropriate to some people, but to me it’s awesome.”

It is also in good fun. Like any set of twins, Clayton and Mason have a tight bond that often looks like a rivalry. But Mason, who is able-bodied, is a constant companion and source of encouragement in his brother’s life. Even if the two have their quarrels.

With Variety’s help, Brenda is working on getting a mobile arm support for Clayton’s left arm too — it’s his more dominant hand, as it turns out.

“It’s going to be huge,” Brenda says.

“This chair has changed Joe’s life! He is

doing fantastic. He is becoming more independent than we expected.

He can now get on the bus for the first time by himself. He can also see the animals at the zoo. Previously, he could not see over the rail. Now he can elevate his chair to see everything.

He does not request help; he tries first to do things. And most of the time he can

accomplish it on his own.”- Allyson, Joe’s mom

“Tony was so proud when he finally got

his hearing aids. We noticed some improvement in his speech

immediately. Other sounds he has to completely learn over since he has either

misheard for so long or possibly never heard. I love watching him when he hears a new sound for the first time. Something as simple as me rubbing my hands together freaks him out!

Every day is an improvement. Tony has some uphill battles ahead of him in life, but

Variety definitely has helped ease part of his burden.”

- Dawn, Tony’s mom

From our Parents“Thank you for

helping provide a new push chair for our daughter,

Paige. Her new push chair allows her to join her classmates on field trips and use

around her middle school. It has been equipped with all that she needs to help keep her safe

including the ability to transport her safely on the school bus if needed. So much of what Paige requires can be difficult to find and afford. As a

parent, we want to provide everything we can for our children, but there are times financially

when we fall short. Your generosity and kindness met our need

with relief.”- Megan, Paige’s mom

One day, while her mother drove her to rehearsals for

Variety Children’s Theatre, 9-year-old Madison was feeling thoughtful.

She turned to her mom Traci. “I’m kind of like Ariel.”

“Why’s that?” Traci replied, perhaps thinking she knew the answer. Like the undersea princess at the heart of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Madison has a shock of bright red hair.

“Well, I don’t always fit in with my regular world,” Madison said. “But when I’m up on stage with all my friends I fit in better.”

It was an unexpected bit of insight that gave Traci pause. Madison lives with cerebral palsy, and navigates the world with the help of a bright green walker and leg braces. In many situations, her gear causes her to stand out.

But on the Variety Children’s Theatre stage, the girl they call “Madi” is celebrated for what makes her exceptional — not what makes her different.

This year’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid was Madison’s first appearance in Variety Children’s Theatre. This direct program teams some of St. Louis’ top theatre professionals with children of all ability levels in producing a classic children’s musical. Madison was part of a children’s ensemble that included kids in wheelchairs, on the autism spectrum or with visual impairments.

Madison felt a bit intimidated during the audition process. She had never expected to see so many kids there. But she soon found a champion in show director Lara Teeter, who went out of his way to guide her through the dance portion of the auditions.

From there, Madison’s naturally effervescent personality won her tons of new friends. Lara continually joked that she needed to smile more, even though Madison wore a permanent grin throughout rehearsals.

During the show, Madison performed in the show-stopping musical number “Under the Sea.” Watching from the audience, Traci felt full of pride: her daughter was a star.

Like Ariel in the play, Madison discovered a whole new world through the magic of theatre.

Variety is expanding its Sunshine Coach Van program in an exciting new direction.

For decades, these dependable and durable vehicles have been a linchpin of Variety’s outreach programming. Variety donates a Sunshine Coach Van to two or more of its partner agencies each year to ensure vital transportation for children with disabilities. Sunshine Coach Vans take kids to doctor’s appointments, therapy sessions, educational field trips and more.

But in 2014, for the first time ever, Variety provided a van directly to a local family. The recipient was Variety child Mallory. Variety’s Sunshine Coach Van program will provide a van to one deserving family each year from now on. This year’s family van was generously donated by The Steward Family Foundation.

From her earliest years, Mallory has been one of Variety’s most enthusiastic participants. Her million-watt smile has lit up the room at countless Variety events.

The gleaming new Chrysler Town & Country van comes custom-built with an electric ramp to easily load Mallory and her power wheelchair. Now her parents can take her anywhere she wants to go with a minimum of hassle or worry.

Variety will continue to provide Sunshine Coach Vans to its partner agencies. Kathy Gagnepain, principal at Variety partner Howard Park Center, says the van is absolutely vital to her organization’s core programs.

“I think people should know that when they donate to Variety, their donation actually touches the lives of many children,” Gagnepain says. “We wouldn’t function without Variety. Vans are expensive, and without them, our friends wouldn’t have the opportunities they have.”
