School Culture and Climate

School Culture and Climate Summary

A positive environment that embodies risk taking, confidence, competition, high expectations and teamwork by all individuals of the school (students andstaff) is our ultimate goal. There is a need for consistency in processes and plans that are put in place. Despite multiple administrative changes, students andteachers have predominantly welcomed the change. Enthusiasm and excitement are contagious, and the students need to feel they are a part of a special placebigger than themselves that they can help improve. Pride in facilities and creating traditions evokes ownership which ultimately changes a culture. Incentiveplans for teachers and students fosters motivation to achieve higher levels in attendance, punctuality, behavior, and overall performance. There is a need forcommon planning time so teachers can plan activities thoroughly. Instructional delivery improves when proper planning is allotted. We will plan our workand work our plan.

Staff Quality, Recruitment, and Retention

Staff Quality, Recruitment, and Retention Summary

If we continue to improve and proactively display our kid’s successes, we will have a better opportunity at getting higher quality applicants. If staff andstudents are excited about our school and embody the pride and ownership in our growth, it will speak volumes to our potential employees. There is a need tobe involved with local job fairs and student teaching programs. In order to retain quality employees we must grow in our efforts to support and provide awork place that is professional yet fun!

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Summary

A curriculum that meets the needs of our students and instructional delivery of that set curriculum. Due to a lack of stability at JJHS over the past four years, the level of consistency has not yielded much growth. Data from last year’s STAAR assessment shows that JJHS is the only school in the district that did notmeet Safeguard’s. Upon arriving and doing many question and answer sessions with teachers, administrators, and district personnel, the biggest need isconsistency and accountability to what we have in place; and, then, assessments to check for validity before making drastic changes to our core curriculum(TEKS Resource System). There is a need for an RTI program, as well as a process and plan for working with students that struggle. Secondly, there is aneed for common planning time established to enable teachers the valuable time to prepare quality lessons for their students. Lastly, there is a need for anaccelerated instruction program that addresses the need of our higher achieving students. Curriculum and Instruction cannot be discussed without theinclusion and contribution of a stable, safe school that fosters a positive climate. A staff that has endured as much turnover as this one needs consistency andaccountability. A solid discipline plan and the monitoring of that plan will work hand in hand with the quality of instruction teachers are able to provide.

Family and Community Involvement

Family and Community Involvement Summary

JJHS has more than 70% Eco. Dis. students and serves one of the most impoverished counties in Texas. With that being known, there is a need for us to berelatable to our surroundings and community. It is vital that we as a school utilize a variety of methods of communication to ensure our parents andcommunity stay informed, including, but not limited to, utilization of phone calls, posting updated info to website periodically, quarterly newsletters, allcalls, and positive articles thru various media, displaying and promoting students’ achievements and efforts through meet the teacher night, pep rallies,STAAR prep night, concerts, plays, etc…

School Context and Organization

School Context and Organization Summary

Organization and organizational processes play a vital role in campus functionality. JJHS has a need to develop leadership teams and disseminateresponsibilities upon those teams. Planning and teaming meetings to collaborate on best practices for school operations will be addressed. Proper planningfor scheduling will create tutorial times in our schedule and teaming time for our teachers. In order to grow as a team each member must know andunderstand their role and what they can do to help their teammates out if need be. Duty schedules, pep rally schedules, early release schedules, etc… must becommunicated and effectively planned ahead. Activities that pertain to budget and travel must have a thorough process.

Technology

Technology Summary

There is at least one teacher computer in each classroom and each core subject teacher has an iPad for use in the classroom. Some rooms may have twocomputers and students are allowed to use those at times. The math and science classes each have a cart that includes a Mimio device, a laptop, a documentcamera, and Mobi tablets. The junior high campus also has three computer labs. One of the labs is used for Primetime (remedial programs), but the other twolabs are open for teachers to sign up their classes to use for various projects. While several of the staff members have mentioned that they feel comfortableabout using it and may even feel that they are somewhat proficient, they are still lacking quite a bit in this area. The staff members have not been exposedenough to the uses of technology in the classroom and do not really grasp what all it can be used for. Most of the students are somewhat proficient in the areaof technology; however, they do not get to use it enough and are not formally educated in using technology. Only some students take classes that are gearedin technology. They also need more exposure in order to really be proficient at technology usage. At the junior high, the level of comfort is somewhat splitdown the middle. While some of the staff feels very comfortable using technology, others are still somewhat leery of its use in the classroom. There areothers that are unsure of how to use it and worry about what to do with it in the classroom. Most all of them have asked for even more training on how to useit in the classroom.

They have also been trained on the basic use of their new iPads. An additional training will be scheduled for iPads in January. The staff also receivesnewsletters from the Instructional Technologist on tips for integrating technology into the classroom. Some of the teachers have also utilized the InstructionalTechnologist by meeting during their conference periods and may have even set up lessons for co-teaching or model teaching. The teachers that have thecarts have also been provided with Mimio training in October. Most of the teachers have used some sort of technology.
