THE LMU TENNIS CENTER

The Loyola Marymount University Tennis Center has been home to Lion tennis for more than 30 years, and since undergoing reconstruction in 2003, the Tennis Center has become a great place to both watch and play tennis.

The long-awaited sixth tennis court, the critical tournament court for the Loyola Marymount University Tennis Center was finished in December of 2003. The final court gives LMU a full six court facility that is home to one of the top programs on the West Coast.

Construction of the sixth court was due to a $50,000 gift from A.G. [BusAdmin ̀ 72] and Kathleen Kading. The tournament court is named in honor of the Kading’s fathers Morris A. Pivaroff and George P. Kading.

“The building of a sixth tennis court is another example of the commitment of the university and its supporters toward build-ing a championship athletics program,” said Athletics Director Bill Husak. “It is a visible example of our efforts to create quality facilities for our student-athletes to practice and compete in and for our fans to cheer them to victory.”

Coaches Jamie Sanchez (women’s tennis) and Tom Lloyd (men’s tennis) note the importance of this gift for their teams. “We have five courts, the addition of the tournament court is pragmatic because it allows us to have six singles matches compet-ing simultaneously, which enables LMU to host matches and tournaments against top-ranked universities,” said Sanchez.

“The Kading family believes that supporting athletics is important for the growth of the university and its long term value,” said Kading. “Athletics will only bring the university prestige based on exposure. It will help with recruiting the most talented student-athletes, but we still have a long way to go.”

Gifts given by Erik Doyle [BBA `84], a former men’s tennis player, and the Ron Labetich family, parents of two tennis alumni, ensured naming rights to two of the remaining five courts. The final three courts were named late in 2006, with the Dempsey Family Court (court four), the Bodkin Family Court (court five), and the Jamie Sanchez Court (court six) all being unveiled.

Improvements are on-going to the facility, as a new blue surface was added prior to the 2013-14 season and a scoreboard was installed in the fall of 2006. The board features individual court scoring controlled by seperate wireless remotes. The board also keeps track of the overall match score. It features 15-inch red LED displays that are easily seen from the end of the sixth court.

HEAD COACH TOM LLOYD

Tom Lloyd begins his second year as LMU men’s tennis head coach in 2014-15. Prior to coming to LMU, Lloyd had spent the previous seven years working as an assistant coach with the University of Arizona men’s tennis program.

In his inaugural year at LMU, Lloyd guided the Lions to a 14-10 overall mark, including a 9-4 record at home at the LMU Ten-nis Center. The 14 wins, which were the most since 2006 for LMU, more than tripled the win total from the year prior (4). The Lions went 4-5 in West Coast Conference action, placing tied for fifth. Lloyd also saw the Lions win nine of 10 matches from 3/13 - 4/5, with the only loss coming to #5 UCLA.

Working in one of the best men’s tennis conferences in the nation, Lloyd helped the 2010 Arizona squad to a season-high ITA ranking of #17 and the program’s first-ever victory over UCLA. That team finished just one win shy of hosting the NCAA Regional, and capped back-to-back NCAA tournament bids in 2009 and 2010. Pushing his athletes both on the court and in the classroom, Lloyd saw his Wildcats post the highest team GPA in three consecutive years stretching from 2007 to 2009 while garnering numerous Academic All-Conference selections.

Prior to Arizona, Lloyd spent two years working as an ATP Tour professional coach for Taylor Dent. Under that title, Lloyd traveled around the world with Dent to tournaments such as the US Open, Wimbledon, Australian Open and Montreal Open, eventually helping Dent to reach a #21 ranking in the world.

Lloyd has also worked as a National Coach with the USTA at the newly-named StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., instructing and coaching top USTA juniors from the ages of 10 to 18 and working directly with Lead National Coach, David Roditi, and Director of Coaching, Jose Higueras.

A standout at Arizona from 2000-2004, Lloyd served as team captain in three of his four seasons as a Wildcat en route to recording 52 singles victories and 33 doubles wins during his career. His best year came as a senior in 2004, when he tallied a 17-12 record in singles competition and an 8-4 mark in doubles play. In 2002, paired with teammate Colin O’Grady, he won the Pac-10 Men’s Doubles Invitational Tournament.

A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., Lloyd was a three-time all-league performer at Esperanza High School, and was named to the all-county team as a freshman.
