academic excellenceDavidson students explore the liberal arts curriculum in depth and enjoy close faculty collaboration. With 1,700 students, the college is large enough for a diverse and invigorating intellectual engagement, but small enough to foster individual experience and opportunity.

Davidson offers over 850 courses and supports 21 majors and 12 academic concentrations. Students may participate in pre-law, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry or dual-degree engineering programs or may design their own independent study classes or interdisciplinary majors.

Students may also apply for funds to support research and travel, and many opportunities exist for summer research positions with Davidson faculty.

Personal relationships with professors and classes limited to 20 students allow for the development of creative, collaborative relationships resulting in a unique academic experience.

Davidson is a national leader on affordability initiatives, with need-blindadmission and meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need with acombination of grants and student employment. In a ground-breaking initia-tive known as the Davidson Trust, Davidson was the first liberal arts collegeto eliminate the loan component in financial aid packages.

Davidson believes that its educational offerings should be affordable forevery admitted student, regardless of a family’s financial means. Thanks toDavidson’s commitment to need-blind admission, a student’s character, accomplishments and academic potential are the only factors in the decision—not ability to pay.

“I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics andthink the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and aftergraduation proves that,” Murphy said. “It’s true that Davidson needs inter-collegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.”

Since Murphy’s return, the Wildcats have pursued several major capitalprojects, including the creation of the innovative $10-million DavidsonScholars Program, and major improvements havebeen completed in Belk Arena and Smith Field atRichardson Stadium. Murphy has overseen the con-struction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field, AlumniStadium, Wilson Field and the football stadiumexpansion project, including a state-of-the-artweight room, new press box and additional perma-nent seating.

In 1984, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Ross as Superior Court Judge,a position he held for 17 years, and at the time, he was the youngest inthe state.

In his work adjudicating felony cases, Ross became familiar with astate justice system that suffered shortcomings from uneven sentencingand a burgeoning prison population. In 1990, the N.C. For two years the 23-member panel worked to create astructured sentencing system that was eventually accepted by the legis-lature and became a model for similar programs nationwide.

For his efforts, Ross received the William H. Rehnquist Award forJudicial Excellence from the National Center for State Courts. ChiefJustice Rehnquist, now deceased, presented the award personally toRoss in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court.

In 1999, North Carolina Chief Justice Burley Mitchell appointed Rossas director of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts. After run-ning the North Carolina Court System for nearly two years, Ross wasinvited by the trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to becomethe Foundation’s execu-tive director. On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22football players traveled to Atlanta to representDavidson College against Auburn, one of the mostformidable teams in the South. The Plainsmen hadmassacred their first four opponents, outscoringteams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored in the day’smatchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line aver-aging 20 pounds less.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards toDavidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulledtogether an offensive attack through the efforts ofrunning back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterbackHenry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of for-ward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerfulteams in the South that day, 21-7, with scrappinessthat captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sports-writers. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from DavidsonCollege, whose small stature and ferocious styleproved overwhelming. One account notes thatMorgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked of theDavidson team, “No other team ever put together inthese United States of the same weight as CoachFetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over theflock of wild men from North Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, andit has been used ever since, replacing former, milderreferences such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians”and “Preachers.”

southern conference

-38- d a v i d s o n

A majority of the sports at Davidson com-pete in the Southern Conference, one of theoldest conferences in the nation, which beginsits 89th season in 2009. The soccer, volleyball, cross country, track and field, basketball, ten-nis, wrestling, baseball and golf programs atDavidson all participate in the league.

Only the Big Ten (1896), the MissouriValley (1907) and the Pac-10 (1915) confer-ences have been around longer than theSoCon (1921). The conference currently con-sists of 11 members in four states throughoutthe Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sportsand championships, which produce partici-pants for NCAA Championships.

The Southern Conference was the first“super conference,” with charter membershipincluding Alabama, Auburn and NorthCarolina. The SoCon gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball, has the oldestbasketball tournament in the nation and wasthe college home of such sporting greats asArnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “ChooChoo” Justice.

Academic excellence has long been a majorpart of the Southern Conference’s tradition.League athletes have been recognized count-less times on CoSIDA Academic All-Americaand district teams. Eighteen Rhodes-Scholarwinners have come out of the conference, including six from Davidson. Each year, theleague distributes at least three graduatescholarships, two of which were won byWildcat soccer players in 2004.

The Southern Conference was born on Feb.25, 1921, in Atlanta, Ga., when 14 institutionsfrom the 30-member Southern IntercollegiateAthletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as theSouthern Conference. The charter memberswere Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia,Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland,Mississippi State, North Carolina, N.C. State,Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and

Washington & Lee, and athletic competitionbegan that fall.

In 1922, seven schools — Florida,Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Carolina, the University of the South, Tulane andVanderbilt — joined the ranks.

Since then, conference membership hasexperienced a series of membership changeswith 42 institutions being affiliated with theleague. The league has undergone two majortransitions during its history.

The first occurred in December of 1932.The Southeastern Conference formed out ofthe 23-school Southern Conference when 13members west and south of the AppalachianMountains reorganized to help reduce theextensive travel demands.

In 1953, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, NorthCarolina, N.C. State, South Carolina andWake Forest withdrew from the league toform the Atlantic Coast Conference, seekingto schedule a greater number of regular-sea-son basketball games against local rivals.

Today, the league continues to thrive andis home to Appalachian State, College ofCharleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon,Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro,Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford officially joined theleague, bringing membership of the confer-ence to 12. VMI is an associate member in thesport of wrestling.

The SoCon currently declares championsin 10 men’s sports — football, soccer, crosscountry, basketball, indoor and outdoor trackand field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf— and nine women’s sports — soccer, volley-ball, cross country, basketball, indoor and out-door track and field, tennis, golf and softball.

The SoCon celebrated 25 years ofwomen’s championships in 2007-08.

The Southern Conference office is locatedin historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C.
