Now in his ninth season as the head coach of the men’s ten-nis team, Billy Pate has this year’s team looking to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive season. He has guided two teams to appearances in the Sweet 16, while also leading the 2008-09 squad to be the first team in pro-gram history to be selected as a host institution for the NCAA First and Second Rounds. He has amassed over 120 wins at the Capstone, including two seasons of at least 20 victories. The continued success of the men’s program under the guid-ance of Pate should make for another exciting campaign this spring.

• The University of Alabama led the nation with a record 10 students named to USA To-day’s 2010 All-USA College Academic Team. UA has had great success in placing students on this national team that honors the “best of the best” undergraduate academic all-stars from across the nation, having placed 46 students on the team since 2003. In addition to this year, UA also had the most students on the list in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 and tied for the top spot in 2007.

• The University of Alabama perennially ranks among the top 50 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings and ranked 34rd among public universities in the 2011 rankings. UA’s latest college rankings include: 1. The School of Law is ranked 38th among all law schools in the nation, spring 2010. 2. The School of Library and Information Studies is ranked 22nd nationally, spring 2009. 3. The School of Social Work’s graduate program is ranked 28th among social work programs at public universities and 42nd when both public and private institutions are included, spring 2008. 4. Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced two national champi-onships, the 2009 football title and the 2002 NCAA gymnastics championship, as well as several Southeastern Conference champion-ships, winning titles in football, gymnastics, men’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; tak-ing SEC tournament titles in both baseball and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and col-lege football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Com-mittee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advi-sory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholar-ship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of eight national championship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992 and 2009) with the first coming as a player, the next six during his coaching career and the last during his tenure as director of athletics. As a player and coach, he was also part of 14 SEC championships, and 27 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of eight national cham-pionships.

The University of Alabama’s Director of Ath-letics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an in-delible mark on one of the nation’s most sto-ried athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athleti-cally and academically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.

During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Ala-bama athletic facilities. Those projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefitted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator.

Throughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversified field of constitu-ents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business community. All of those experiences and relationships - in addi-tion to his ability to unify those many constitu-ents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama athletics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a future that holds great promise.

Moore’s dedication to and love of the Uni-versity of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his life-long contribution to The University of Ala-bama, the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama officially dedicated the facility for-merly known as The Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as Coach Bryant’s graduate assistant in 1964, then as defensive backfield coach for five years beginning in 1965 before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82 and serving as the Tide’s first of-fensive coordinator starting in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for Alabama’s last four national championship teams.

A 1963 graduate of The University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s Degree in Sec-ondary Education from the Capstone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He and the late Mrs. Charlotte Moore have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scott-sdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

“The academic support we have for our student-athletes is unrivaled. Every resource imaginable is at their disposal. We have a compre-hensive program designed to help them succeed not just at Alabama but also long after their college years are over. The academic student services center is a tremendous point of pride and it’s one of the first things we highlight to our recruits.”

The Crimson Tide men’s tennis team regularly gives back to the city of Tuscaloosa and the surrounding areas through various community service programs. Alabama student-athletes take time out of their hectic sched-ules to read to children, speak at local churches or to just stop by a hospi-tal to brighten the day of patients. The tennis teams also take part in the annual Walk to Defeat ALS to help raise awareness for this disease that has personally affected the tennis program as women’s head coach Jenny Mainz’ father lost his courageous battle with ALS in January of 2009.

The Southeastern Conference men’s and women’s tennis programs continue to be among the nation’s leaders on the colle-giate hardcourt.

On the men’s side, Georgia and Tennessee advanced to the semifinals with Tennessee advancing to the finals of the 2010 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga. The Vols were defeated by Southern Cal, 2-4 in the championship match.

In singles, the best finish was by Auburn’s Tim Puetz who lost in the semifinals to eventual runner-up Austen Childs of Lou-isville.

In doubles play, Tennessee’s John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren were defeated by Virginia’s Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3.

Fifteen ITA All-America honors were bestowed upon SEC players in 2010. Since 1990, 150 honors in singles and 150 in doubles have been awarded to the confer-ence players.

A total of 13 ITA All-America honors were awarded to SEC student-athletes this sea-son to put the totals at 115 singles and 128 double honors since 1990.

The Crimson Tide is looking to build off of last season where it finished with a 13-14 record but advanced to its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Alabama will have to replace two valuable seniors from last sea-son, as Saketh Myneni and Houssam Yassine combined for 38 singles wins and 31 doubles victories. Myneni was an integral part of the lineup, playing at the No. 1 position in singles and doubles, while Yassine provided stability to the bottom of the lineup. The Tide returns seven players from a season ago, while two new players have been added to the roster.

“Certainly, we’re going to miss both Saketh and Houssam this spring,” Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. “They provided great experience, and both of them had very suc-cessful senior campaigns. Those are definite-ly two spots we need to have players step up and assert themselves. I am very optimistic that we have guys ready to do that.”

Trey Walston will be the lone senior on this year’s squad. He played singles sparingly a season ago, picking up six wins overall, in-cluding two at the No. 6 spot in dual matches. He provided major contributions in doubles competition, finishing the season tied for sec-ond on the team in doubles victories with 21. Walston and Yassine closed out the fall por-tion of last season with a 13-3 record. Walston then posted an 8-5 mark at the No. 3 position in the spring, including going 5-3 in SEC ac-tion with Jarryd Botha.

Alabama will have four juniors on the roster this season. Creighton Blanchard, Ricky Do-verspike, and Michael Thompson are all re-turners from last year, while transfer Vikram Reddy in a newcomer.

Blanchard picked up seven victories in singles and nine in doubles in limited action last sea-son. He played most of his matches in the fall, but was able to record one dual win in singles at the No. 6 spot and two in doubles at the No. 3 spot. Doverspike brings a lot of experience into his junior season, as he was the only Tide player to collect at least 20 wins in singles and doubles last season. He led the team in singles wins, collecting a total

of 23 throughout the year. He played most of his dual matches at the No. 2 position, post-ing 10 victories. Doverspike played multiple matches at all three doubles spots, but was still able to finish tied for second in wins with Walston at 21. Overall, 13 of his 21 wins came in dual competition. Doverspike and Thomp-son began the fall season ranked No. 51 in the nation in doubles.

“Ricky is coming along after having surgery on his left wrist in early June, but it was defi-nitely a frustrating process for him,” Pate ex-plained. “Fortunately, we expect him to be 100 percent in the spring and regain the form he had last spring before his injury.”

Thompson should also provide the Alabama lineup with some stability. He amassed 15 singles and 16 doubles wins last season. He spent the majority of the dual season at the No. 4 singles position, where he claimed all but two of his dual wins. He was also a solid performer at the No. 2 doubles spot, finishing with a 7-5 record. Reddy, a native of Andhra Pradesh, India, comes in with impressive cre-dentials from his time in International Ten-nis Federation juniors competition. He was ranked No. 2 nationally in the under 18 divi-sion. He claimed one singles title and nine doubles titles, including winning the 2008 national championship in doubles. The two juniors squared off this summer in the finals of the last ITA Summer Circuit Event for the Southeast Region, with Thompson winning 6-1, 6-1.

“Vikram is progressing very well and has a lot more experience than usual for a first year player,” Pate said. “Since he is actu-ally a transfer, he should provide some of the match toughness that Houssam and Saketh provided. Vikram has played a great deal of international events in juniors and on the pro level, so we’re confident he’ll play a key role in our lineup.”

There will be three sophomores on the Tide’s squad this year in Harris Barnard, Jarryd Bo-tha, and Ian Chadwell. Barnard only played a total of eight singles matches and one doubles match a year ago, but did pick up

a singles victory at the No. 6 position in dual competition. Botha joined the team in Janu-ary just in time for the spring season and made an immediate impact, posting a total of 18 singles and 15 doubles victories. He played all but one of his singles matches at either the No. 3 or No. 4 spot, collecting 14 dual wins, which is the most of any returning player. Of his 15 doubles victories, eight came in dual competition at the No. 3 position.

“Jarryd had a great freshmen season, espe-cially when you consider he enrolled in Janu-ary and was only 17 years old at the time he started,” Pate said. “He’s very close to break-ing through at a much higher level, so we ex-pect him to vie for a spot near the top of our lineup.”

Chadwell gained a lot of experience in his freshman campaign, mostly in singles. He sat out the fall while recovering from an in-jury, but played in 15 matches in the spring. He went through his struggles, but managed to collect eight wins, including posting a 4-2 mark in conference play. Chadwell teamed up with Thompson to form a successful doubles duo this fall, reaching the quarterfinals of the prestigious Southern Intercollegiate Champi-onships.

“Ian spent a great deal of his freshmen year rehabilitating from a serious foot injury, and it set him back a bit last spring,” Pate said. “He’s still had some issues this fall, but he looks to be on the mend and on the way to recovery. At full strength, he’ll be an impact player for us this spring.”

The lone freshman for Alabama this year will be Carlos Taborga. He was a member of Bolivia’s Davis Cup team at the ages of 16 and 17, competing in the qualifying round. He played ITF tournaments in his final year of junior competition, claiming titles in con-secutive tournaments in South America. He was one of the best players in his country for a number of years, winning the title in just his second appearance in a national tourna-ment in the under 14 division. He also won a pair of national doubles titles. In addition, Taborga spent two years training in Madrid,

Spain, where he won several junior tournaments.

“Carlos is a true freshman for us that is very strong physically and has the abil-ity to contend for a spot in our lineup,” Pate added. “He is a bit raw right now but is improving rapidly, and we expect him to get better and better.”

“Ultimately, our success will depend on how these new guys transition to the rigors of the SEC and how we do avoiding injuries and coming back from some ailments that plagued us this fall,” Pate said. “Our strength should balance throughout the lineup. Though we will be looking for someone to assume the No. 1 position vacated by Saketh, we expect to have strength at each of our spots in the singles and doubles lineup.

And though we are likely to have two new faces in the top six, I think we’re experienced enough and our new guys have the ability to give us a chance to compete at a very high level. The re-turnees are going to need to demon-strate their experience and leadership.”

Junior Ricky Doverspike won 20-plus matches in singles and doubles last season.

Billy Pate, who is entering his ninth season at the helm of the Ala-bama men’s tennis team, has built a program that is consistently among the nation’s best. Over the past eight years, Pate has led his squads to a Crimson Tide record seven NCAA Tournament appear-ances, including a pair of trips to the NCAA Sweet 16. Throughout his tenure, he has coached five individuals that have advanced to either the NCAA Singles or Doubles Championships on seven occasions. In addition, Pate has guided six of his teams to the top 40 of the final national rankings, with three of those teams finishing in the top 20.

Last season, Pate’s team finished with a 13-14 record appearing in a fifth-straight NCAA Tournament. The 2010 season also saw one of the most successful all-around student-athletes in program his-tory in senior Saketh Myneni. Myneni entered the season as the No. 10 singles player in the nation, tying the highest ranking ever by a Tide player. In addition, he became the program’s first SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year and first ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.

The 2009 squad compiled a 21-8 record and finished 16th in the final rankings. Alabama earned the right to be one of the 16 host teams for the NCAA First and Second Rounds, the first time a team had done that in school history. The Tide also had two players and two doubles teams finish in the top 100 in the nation. Four players fin-ished the season with at least 20 wins, including an impressive 32-9 record from senior Michael Jung.

The 2008 season was another successful one under Pate as the team finished No. 24 while compiling 19 wins along the way. Ala-bama opened the year with seven-straight victories and took down several ranked opponents. In 2007, Pate led his squad to its best finish and highest team ranking since 1993. The 14th-ranked Crimson Tide made its second consecu-tive trip to the NCAA tournament where Alabama cruised by East Tennessee State and upset Duke to make its first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2003. Juniors Daniel Buikema and Mathieu Thibaudeau qualified for the NCAA tournament as the 23rd-ranked tandem and earned their first spot in the doubles draw. Buikema and Thibaudeau became only the 13th doubles pair in Alabama’s tennis history to compete in the NCAA doubles draw. The team’s success earned Pate recognition as well. The 2007 SEC Co-Coach of the Year earned the South Region Coach of the Year honor from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), after trans-forming Alabama tennis into a Southern powerhouse in a region that features the nation’s fiercest competition. In 2006, Pate led Alabama to its first winning season in three years and a berth to the NCAA tournament. Under Pate’s guidance, ju-nior Joseph Jung made it to the second round of the NCAA tourna-ment’s singles draw and posted his third 20-win season. Jung would achieve another 20-win season in 2007, the only Alabama player in history to reach that accomplishment. Pate’s first recruit at Alabama, Jung finished the 2006 season nationally ranked three times and led the Tide from the No. 1 singles slot the majority of his career. In his first year at the Capstone, Pate led Alabama to its first trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in five years. The Tide defeated Marist and Harvard before falling to Baylor.

“Winning is the ultimate goal, but I strongly believe in providing a framework to help our team accomplish many things on and off the court.” - Head Coach Billy Pate

Pate made his move to Division I college tennis in 2000 when he joined Bobby Bayliss’ staff at the University of Notre Dame. During Pate’s stint with the Irish, Notre Dame consistently finished in the Top 10 nationally, ranking as high as No. 4 nationally. In 2002, Pate was named National and Region IV Assistant Coach of the Year by the ITA. As a part of the Irish coaching staff, Pate was the recruiting coordinator and served as the team’s primary liaison to the strength and conditioning program. No stranger to success, Pate came to the Capstone after an illustrious coaching tenure at Georgia Perimeter College. In four years at GPC, Pate’s teams posted a 87-43 record and won three consecutive Junior College National Championships. The three-time recipient of the Max Grubbs award, given to the National Junior College Coach of the Year, has been named Coach of the Year thirteen different times by five organizations, including the United States Professional Tennis Association, the ITA, Georgia Professional Tennis As-sociation and the National Junior College Athletic Association. Prior to his position at Georgia Perimeter, Pate served as the assistant coach of Atlanta Thunder of the World Team Tennis League, and in con-junction with his position with the Thunder, he was the Stadium Opera-tions Director and Community Relations Director from 1993-1995.

Pate received his undergraduate degree in 1992 while playing tennis at Mississippi State. He earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Georgia State in 1995.

Bo Hodge, one of the nation’s top collegiate and juniors players of the past, enters his third season as an assistant coach for the Crimson Tide. In his two seasons, Hodge had helped guide Alabama to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearance while amassing 34 dual-match wins.

Prior to arriving at the Capstone, the former Georgia Bulldog standout com-pleted course work on a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communication following several years on the professional tour. While finishing his degree, Hodge served as a volunteer coach under Manuel Diaz from August 2006 to May 2008, helping lead the Bulldogs to consecutive NCAA national champi-onships.

Hodge boasts impressive credentials having served stints as a coach and hit-ting partner for Venus and Serena Williams throughout the 2005-06 season. In addition, he served as coach of ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) professional Mardy Fish in 2007.

A touring professional on the ATP Tour from 2004-06, Hodge embarked on a coaching career when his playing days ended. Having played and coached in Europe, South America, Australia, Asia and the United States, Hodge provides experience and impressive international connections to his post on Pate’s staff.

As a player, Hodge was a four-time All-American at Georgia from 2001-04. He played on three Southeastern Conference championship teams (2001, 2002 and 2004) and one national championship team (2001). The No. 2-ranked col-legiate player in the nation in both 2001 and 2004, Hodge spent much of his college career ranked in the nation’s top five in both singles and doubles and reached the NCAA Doubles finals in 2004 with teammate John Isner.

Prior to attending Georgia, Hodge had an outstanding career in juniortennis that included leading Athens Academy to the 1998 Class A High School state title as a sophomore. After helping the Spartans win the title, Hodge moved to Boca Raton, Fla., to study under famed South African coach Stanford Boster while attending Boca Prep, where he also played on the basketball team. His teammates at Boca Prep included Andy Roddick.

Alabama tennis student-athletes have the privilege of play-ing in one of the finest facilities in the country as the Ala-bama Tennis Stadium was one of nine winners of the 25th annual USTA Facility Awards Program. The outdoor complex features 12 hard courts with seating for 2,000 spectators. The $4.2 million facility, built in 2004, houses a team lounge with a flat screen television and couches, a conference room, coaches’ offices, player locker rooms with private restrooms and showers, a full-service athletic training room and a con-cession stand with a kitchen.
