TIDEWATER KNITTING GUILD OF VIRGINIA July 2014 A message from our president It’s a girl and I just knew it. I had this gut feeling it was a girl because I kept gravitating toward girly colored yarns every time I went into a knit shop. The VT sweater (which Lora said looked like it was for a girl) is done and given. I couldn’t wait. Now, I am working on a baby blanket with Sassy Skein cotton yarn in pink, green and white (my colors, not theirs) which I started before I knew the gender of the grandbaby. By the way, I love working with the Sassy Skein yarn, which I bought at Baa Baa Sheep the weekend of our scavenger hunt and was told will be available at The Yarn Club as well. Next, I need to think about her Christmas stocking. The rest of the family has decided they are chopped liver at this point. Speaking of knitting small items, baby items as well as socks, hats and mittens will be perfect for our Guild Night at the baseball game July 12 (tote bag giveaway night). Tickets are $11. Jackie Scott will collect money at the July meeting, or you can mail her a check. Family, friends and non-knitters are welcome to come. More information will follow in an email. July is our Yarn Yard Sale/Swap. Anyone can buy yarn; however, you must be a Guild member to sell it at our meeting. This is a great opportunity to find a good home for that yarn that called to you at one time but now has lost some of its charm because it is calling someone else. That’s my story and I am sticking to it so I can make way for the new fall yarns that I hope will be coming soon. The yarn yard sale also is a good time to find yarn for holiday gifts and projects. We also will have a program about brioche knitting to be given by Cheryl Moore. Cheryl told me that brioche knitting is one of her favorite knitting techniques and she is excited about the program. Time to get back to my knitting. I think the baby is going to need a Christmas outfit. Charity Knitting: Organizations need baby items, pet blankets & more By Chris Goudeau ! We have several organizations that we can knit/crochet for this summer: !!! Birthright of Norfolk provides help for pregnant women. They will accept any baby items: blankets, sweaters, hats, booties, etc. !! Animal Shelter – Your leftovers will make wonderful pet blankets. The yarns don’t even have to match; the animals won’t care. Remember, the smallest blanket should measure 14” square.!! Chesapeake City Jail - Guild Member Vici Kahookele’s pastor at her church, who also is the pastor at the Chesapeake City Jail, has asked for prayer shawls for the women who are incarcerated there. The shawls will be accepted anytime during the year.!! Baby blankets – These are accepted anytime as well for several of our charities.!!! Remember to sign the charity knitting log each month when you attend our meetings or email me at [email protected]. If you have given items to an out-of-town charity, note that on the charity log. Thank you.!!

New Lines Launch Party! I’ll be celebrating the addition of three new yarn lines from July 15 –19. New to Baa Baa Sheep are Madelinetosh, Happy Fuzzy Yarn and Crabapple Yarns’ Ardent. And what’s a party without games, prizes and cake? Come in during the week to play bingo, have a piece of Rowena’s pound cake and register for a drawing for one of three prizes comprised of the new yarns. Everyone who visits will receive a small gift.   Happy Fuzzy Yarn is a hand-dyed fingering weight comprised of 75% superwash Corriedale wool and 25% nylon. It’s machine wash in cool

water and tumble dry or lay flat. In addition to her fabulous colorways, what I like most about Riin Gill’s work are the names of her colors: e.g.. Autumn Indigo, Tree Frog and Death and Taxes.       Ardent fingering weight is by Crabapple Yarns. It is 51% organic cotton and 49% bamboo, ideal for summer knitting, and has 448 yards. It’s available in 10 gorgeous colors. Madelinetosh will be available in four weights: Tosh Merino (worsted), Tosh Merino Light (fingering), Tosh Sport and Tosh Merino DK.  The merino is 100% superwash, so it’s perfect for all of your projects. Madelinetosh’s newest venture is Unicorn Tails. It is the same as Tosh merino Light (fingering), but skeined in 52-yard lengths. Priced at $4.50 each, they’re perfect for color work and small projects.

Join your fellow knitters at the ballgame July 12 By Jackie Scott ! Don’t miss the Guild’s night at the Norfolk Tides baseball game on Saturday, July 12. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Be sure to bring your knitting! Family and friends (even non-knitters!) are welcome. ! ! Tickets cost $11 for adults and $9 for youth through high school, military and adults over 60. Ticket orders will be taken through the July 7 Guild meeting. Checks should be made payable to Jackie Scott, and can be mailed to 616 Delaware Avenue, Norfolk,VA 23508.!! Tickets will be available for pick-up at will call the night of the game.! !

Guild members share how to add a touch of sophistication to your knitted items During the June meeting, Guild member Amy Upson, left, demonstrated how to use the technique of smocking in your knitting, while Guild member Linda Johnson, right, showed how it’s not so difficult to add beads to your knitting.

Do you know nuno? Guild members Marilyn Estrada, left, and Rachel Woolridge, right, took a nuno felting class at the Fancy Fiber Fiesta in April at Chippokes State Park. They used various fibers such as wool roving, sari silk and cheese cloth on silk chiffon scarves. The class took about two hours. (photo courtesy Rachel Woolridge)
