Calendar: Market Yard Slalom 10th July

This is the second slalom that Frome Canoe Club organises for British Canoeing. It is part of the National Series of ranked events, and Ben is the organiser of this event. Thank you Ben.

It’s a Div 4 event so ideal for newcomers to the sport. More experienced paddlers and/or ranked paddlers can paddle in the Open event.

We need help to run the event and we also want lots of members to race in it.

Come at 8am to help with the set up and to get some early practice in.

Please note that today is also the Children’s Festival in Frome and we are sharing the car park with them. So it will be busy and crowded in the morning. Please be prepared to unload and park somewhere else.

Calendar in detail - Friday evening events

LANGHAM FARM

FRIDAY

8th July 6.30pm to 8.30pm Cost £2.50 Organised by Rich C

The last of our monthly sessions over the summer

This session is for members wanting to use the moving water at Langham Farm to progress their skills. It is not going to be a general fun session so no swimming and no messing about. We need to know in advance if you intend to come and need club kit. Let us know on the Wednesday before so that we can load the trailer. People with own kit can of course just turn up. As usual we will end off with cup of tea and chat.

The normal procedure at Langham Farm needs to be observed : Please do not stop/park in front of

the farmhouse, if the ground is wet, please park

on the bridge or very close to it where there is stone.

Please leave gates as you find them.

MINI SLALOM

1st July 6.30pm at the Clubhouse

THE LAST IN OUR 2016 SERIES OF MINISLALOMS

This is a friendly competition, giving you a chance to have a go without the stress of a ranked slalom.

Come at 6.30pm to practise and the race starts at 7pm.

We need help to run this event, so If you can spare an evening, please come along and give us a hand.

FRIDAY CANOE

POLO

15th July 7pm at the Clubhouse

We have not had much luck with this new venture. The first session was cancelled because water conditions were bad; the second session was cancelled because of poor turn-out. This is the last Friday polo we have programmed for the summer - so come if you can!

Open to all but the ability to wear a spraydeck will be useful!

CIWW

21st August

Organiser: Jack Smiles

Some white water in the middle of summer!

A trip to Cardiff White Water Centre. You need to be 2 Star standard to paddle the early session at 4 cumecs and 3 Star standard to paddle the 8 cumecs flow.

We go as a group but everyone signs in as individuals when they arrive.

AQUATIC FIRST AID

14th August 9am - 5pm at the Clubhouse Cost £30 Trainer: Neil Dixon

An 8-hour qualification which covers incident management, resuscitation, hypothermia and many other aspects of first aid. It is a dry course (ie no canoeing involved!) but does involve a lot of practical work on dummies.

This qualification is needed if you want to coach for the club at L1 or above.

AFTERNOON PADDLE AT

LANGHAM FARM

7th August 1.30pm at the Clubhouse or go direct to site for 2pm Cost: £3 Organiser: Rich Carter

An opportunity to paddle the River Frome without complicated transport arrangements.

There is moving water there, and how much will depend on the rain we have had. Unlike the Market Yard you have access to 1500m of paddling, from Rode village down to the weir below the site. And of course we will be able to play at Rode weir if we want!

You will you need to let us know what boats you want to paddle so we can take them there. There is even a racing K2 down there that you can try, or try the white water racer.

Go straight there if you have sorted out the kit you need, or meet us at Market Yard if you need help with transport.

We will supply drinks and biscuits. Cost will be the normal local river charge, as there is a small charge to use site.

Report: River Frome Trip, 18th June

River Frome By Rich Carter

This must go down as one of the best trips we have had

on the River Frome: good weather, not cold but not sweating from the sun on your back, water at a nice level, and a really friendly group of paddlers!

We were able to paddle most of the river, with just the normal spots where we had to walk - after the first weir and at Rode, (I have walked that section at Rode for as long as I have been in the club).

It was also great to see some paddlers trying things for themselves, like doing the weir again and again at the lunch break - and helping others to do it, playing

in the stopper, swimming in the stopper. Oh that was the canoe group, going over the weirs and swimming! Sad to say some got a bit wet, some by departing from their kayak or canoe. I think there may be some work on low braces needed there.

To be fair, those in kayaks who did some swimming, was probably because without the spray deck a bit of water always fills the boat. Do a spray deck test soon and then there’ll be no swimming at weirs!

We stopped for our normal photo call at Rode weir - Pam you need to think of a

different group photo shot spot - we headed for Langham Farm. With a big play, swim and sink Rich below the foot bridge, it was time to head home for a nice mug of tea and put the feet up. See you on our next trip!

Ed: this is the first trip for a little while where numbers of Women = Men. But where were the girls today? And wasn’t it was great to have four canoes on the trip? Thank you to James (Josh’s dad) for doing the shuttle and Peter for helping with transport.

21 paddlers and 47 points

Boys: Finn, Jack K, JoJo (3), Jos, Josh (6), Liam (3), Otto, Stanley (3), Tobias (6)

Ladies: Binkie (3), Emma, Linz (6), Pam, Sam (3), Woody (8)

Men: Christian, Kenny, Rich, Richard Curtis (6), Steve and Stuart.

SATURDAY Loading at Market Yard went well with some creative stacking of boats.

After lunch we were off to paddle the River Wye. The water was browner than we expected meaning that there was going to be some flow to help us along and not only that, the rapids would be good!

We had 47 paddlers and two dogs altogether, so the launch at Lydbrook was a mammoth task. Stu and Bex choreographed the whole thing and eventually we were all on.

Here we are at our first stop. Still bathed in hot sunshine some decided to go for a swim and others decided to take advantage of the muddy bank, and mud sliding took on a whole new meaning. Jim tried out his new canoe sail.

Then the weather turned and we were privileged to some of the heaviest rainfall I have ever known. Can you see the rain drops in this photo? Undeterred we paddled on and because the river had a good flow on it, we made short work of the long paddle.

SUNDAY - the flow was up and this posed problems getting to the rapids, but once we were there, by golly did we have some fun! Surfing the waves, crossing the flow,

breaking in and out - we tried it all! Until it was time to head back to camp. And there no rain till we packed up.

A big thank you to the instructors and the drivers, and to Alfie’s Nan in the cook tent all weekend. A special thank you to all those parents who helped to unload at the end. Thank you all!
