Linda  Smith  McCormack  (Vice-President  Nominee)    TFRC Member-at-Large, Linda Smith McCormack returned to her hometown of Sackville, NB in July of 1999, with her husband, Don, and their son, Ross. Daughter of Layton and Shirley Smith, and sibling of Gordon and Ann, Linda cherished her childhood here in Sackville. She graduated from Tantramar Regional High School in 1982 and attended Mount Allison University for one year before transferring to the University of New Brunswick to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. Linda taught for eleven years before returning home, where she continued her career at Marshview Middle School and finally, Tantramar Regional High School. Choosing to challenge herself to move about in the public school system, in elementary, middle, and high school, she describes her career as exceptionally rewarding. For a mother, Sackville was undoubtedly the best place to raise their son. Since arriving here, Linda, Don, and Ross have thoroughly enjoyed the many opportunities and diversity afforded to them in this gem of a town, and cherish their summers spent on the Northumberland Strait. A growing son who keeps his parents entertained through his sports, Ross likely breathes a quiet sigh of relief now as both of his parents have left their positions at TRHS where he currently attends Grade 11.  October  2013

Through the efforts of part time project staff, a volunteer Board of Directors, and many community volunteers TFRC continues to grow and garner support from a variety of funding sources to expand programming and services focused on children and families. As the TFRC journey continues, relationships are strengthened and new ones built. With these relationships come opportunities and challenges as we learn more about individual and community needs and strive to build capacity to align our ideas and resources in collaboration with others. United Way has invested TFRC in 2013 and 2014 with the funding of Talking  and  Trekking  Together  in  Tantramar-  Mobilizing  Our  Community (TTT) Our vision with this project is to bring together various community groups, to achieve a common plan for providing cohesive programs and services for children and families in the Tantramar Region. Year 1 has been dedicated to a series of strategic planning sessions involving community partners, to assess current community strengths, build and strengthen relationships and create conditions for moving forward collaboratively. Earlier United Way investments in the form of Community Building Grants from 2008 - 2012 which funded the Program were instrumental in building the foundation of our organization and we are confident that this United Way investment will have a similar impact on our growth. We are currently working on documenting the results of year one and preparing for Year 2. The next phase will involve the implementation of preliminary projects developed in the Year 1 community mobilizing phase In addition to the focus on the TTT  project 2013- 2014 will see the continuation of the projects and programs that have evolved since our incorporation in 2007. Our participation and leadership in evolving community-based programs enabled through partnerships and networking have demonstrated practical & creative responses to Tantramar community needs. I invite you to read the project and program reports included in this TFRC Annual Report to get a true sense of the many ways we are responding and growing with the Tantramar community. We will participate in strategic planning this fall as it is again time for us to engage in collective reflection within the organization. Like many non profits aka community change organizations we exist due to the tremendous efforts of volunteers and a patch work of funding sources. Our upcoming strategic planning will support us in aligning our vision within our current capacities while seeking out additional resources to sustain and grow the organization. I wish to express my grateful appreciation to participating families, donors, partners, volunteers, TFRC Board members, and our dedicated staff Raeghann Lister who all make it possible to continue in this collective community journey. Respectfully submitted, Sharon Hachey President, TFRC

been able to continue since that time with the annual Fall Community Building Grant from 2009 into 2013. Through the FDO project, TFRC has been able to form strong, lasting community partnerships that work to develop a wide range of services for all community members. TFRC partnered to hold a number of events this past year which encourage families to spend time to learn and play together through literacy-based activities. Family Literacy Day, held every January, was a great success with

School. The idea was to show that reading, or learning to read has to take a lot of time; it can be done over a song, with a comic strip, or by playing a board game together. TFRC worked with the Town of Sackville on many of their events as well including Sackville Fall Fair, Midnight Madness, Winterfest, March Break Activities, and Clean Sweep. We look forward to continued participation in these events, as

Mini  Storysacks  Project    Through funding received from the New Brunswick Literacy Coalition, TFRC was able to provide a total of 125 Mini Storysacks to children at Christmas through the Sackville Community Association, PEDVAC,

or non-fiction book, a prop to go along with the book, a notebook, and something to write with. The Mini Storysack bags were providpartnering with them again this coming holiday season. Books were donated, purchased from Tidewater Books, a proud local supporter of TFRC, and through Scholastic Canada book orders at Salem Elementary School. Purchasing books through Salem meant classrooms were able to receive books for their libraries. We have learned that this funding is no longer available. This fall we are asking the community to help with donations of materials or time so we can continue to share the joy of reading with local families. Graduation  Preparatory  Series  Intern

Mount  Allison  University  Career  Services  and  International  Centre  Partnership   In February of 2012, TFRC was invited to take part in the Graduation Preparatory Series offered at Mount Allison University to fourth year International Students. The GPS program aims to prepare senior level international students for their professional life in Canada after graduating from Mount Allison. One key component of our program is offering our program participants the opportunity to apply for a paid internship. In the past these internships have been offered internally, but this past year it was expanded so student would be able to seek relevant community experience. TFRC submitted a job advertisement for a Fundraising Campaign Intern, who would work on our fundraising letter campaign. We hired one student who was paid for a total of 40 hours through the GPS program, and raised $725 from community members. In addition we were invited to speak to all of the students of the GPS program about the importance of volunteering, and what it means to the community.

food, and making art that interacts with plants and nature. Sprouts participants, aged 7-12, were involved in a range of activities including the development of gardening skills and knowledge. At the beginning of the season, participants planted a wide range of seeds, learning the value of companion planting and consistent care of garden beds, such as weekly weeding and watering. Crafts and games were also a fun and interactive part of the Sprouts programming. Each day participants would engage in various art activities planned by Elizabeth (the community garden youth program coordinator) with the help of the two community garden high school interns. A few especially successful activities were pot painting, recycled bag-making, scavenger hunts, and making cement garden stones. Sprouts participants harvested from their garden bed, and by the end of the season, kids were taking home such vegetables as lettuce, kale, beans, carrots, and zucchini on a weekly basis. The Sprouts garden bed will continue to be cared for by the community garden employees, and although the Sprouts programming has ended, participants are encouraged to continue to harvest from their garden bed.

Fresh  for  Less    Food  Purchasing  Club

Fresh for Less is a bulk food purchasing club initiated by the Sackville Food Group who partnered with the Tantrato start this valuable service, and made possible with funding from a Community Food Action Program grant from the New Brunswick Department of Healthy and Inclusive Communities, as well as start-up funding and guidance from the Mapleton Teaching Kitchen. These community groups recognize the

produce more accessible to all members of the community. Members pay $15 per month to participate, and receive a box of fresh produce once a month. Money is pooled, and then produce is purchased in bulk through Apple a Day Produce Company, a family owned wholesale company operating out of

which provides a greater base of fresh produce for all who participate. TFRC looks forward to growing membership in this club, as the more people who participate, the more produce everyone receives. Submitted by Raeghann Lister Program Coordinator

Talking  and  Trekking  Together  In  Tantramar:  Mobilizing  Our  Community   The Talking and Trekking Together in Tantramar project was funded by the United Way of Greater Moncton to bring together various community groups to achieve a common, directed plan for providing cohesive programs and services for individuals and families in the Tantramar Region. Grant funding allows for a two-year project with indicators and outcomes for each year.

identified community partners to assess current community strengths, strengthen relationships, and create conditions for moving forward collaboratively. Year 2 aims to address the social issues facing the youth of the region by offering relevant programming identified by the strategic plan designed by outcomes in the first year. To date, the following activities have been conducted:

1. A Steering Committee of area service providers was formed. 2. A Service Provider survey was conducted. 3. Two Community Forums have been conducted. 4. A draft survey for individuals has been designed. This survey has been made available on

Survey Monkey and has also been used by service providers in conversation with their clients. A Progress Report was prepared in June 2013. The final report for Year 1 of this project will be completed by the end of October 2013. Submitted by Gwen Zwicker Project Facilitator

Talk With Me TFRC Partnership September 2013

Education & Early Childhood Development has offered a variety of programs in the Tantramar community over the past year. During the fall of 2012, two sessions of an 8 week Parent Child Mother Goose program was offered to parents and their babies as well as to parents and their preschoolers. Approximately 20 families attended these programs on a regular basis. The Sackville Playschool was available as a venue with the teacher of that program, Allison Butcher acting as the co-facilitator. A five week Baby Massage program was offered to 12 families of pre-crawling babies during the months of February and March, 2013. Two classes were held at the TFRC where simple massage techniques that foster early communication were shared with parents. A follow-up Baby Talk program was also offered to these and other parents of children under a year of age in April. In addition, the TFRC offered its space to the Talk With Me program to meet with families for individual Parent Child Consultations and Hearing Screenings. The intimate space of the TFRC provided an excellent location for these programs to be held. Information about ongoing TFRC programs was able to be given to the families by Raeghann. The Talk With Me program also partnered with the TFRC and the Sackville Public Library during the summer months to offer a weekly Storytent program. Please refer to a separate summary of this program for details. Future planning will continue with the hopes that the Communication Begins at Birth program be included in whatever prenatal program is offered at the TFRC. This was not possible over the past year.

Yoga  in  the  Park    Nava  Yoga  Studio  Partnership   Kids' Yoga was held each Wednesday throughout July and August 2013, made possible through an Active Communities Grant received by TFRC from the NB Department of Healthy and Inclusive Communities. Kids' Yoga was lead by Leanne Laracy, owner of Nava Yoga, with the help of a couple volunteers. It was held at Nava Yoga's studio on Main Street as a drop-in program with many of the same participants returning weekly. This partnership has been a great program and we are exploring opportunities to continue to share yoga to kids. Submitted by Leanna Laracy, Certified Yoga Instructor

Coffee  and  Conversation   Coffee and Conversation is a program that happens every Wednesday morning at the Tantramar Family Resource Centre from 8:30 11 am. This drop-in program provides a space for members of the community to come together, talk about issues in their lives, and provide support to others. It e lending library, and other resources. This program encourages relationship building between TFRC and community residents.

Little  Free  Library   2012 saw the launch of a Little Free Library outside of TFRC thanks to the generous donation from Susan and Steve Kastuk-Ridlington and daughters in memory of Edith Doncaster, caregiver to the girls

neighbours share their favourite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. The community, both full-time residents and Mount Allison University students, children and adults have all enjoyed using the Little Free Library over the past year.

Prenatal  Classes    VON  Healthy  Baby  and  Me  Partnership   Prenatal classes are held on an as-needed basis at the Sackville Memorial Hospital, and facilitated by VON nurse, Maria DesRoches. Prenatal classes are offered free of charge to any expectant mom, and offer a variety of knowledge on labour and delivery, breastfeeding, and nutrition among many other things. Participants are given eggs and juice each week to take home, recognizing that healthy moms provide the best for their babies. Bonds are formed between participants, building important support systems lasting into the future. We were able to offer one prenatal class session spanning eight weeks with seven participants. We look forward to holding more in the future.

Annual  Dump  and  Donate  Yard  Sale

The 7th Annual Giant Yard Sale was held on April 20, 2013 at the old Sackville Fire Hall between the hours of 8 AM and 1 PM. This date worked well to allow both Mount Allison students and the community at large to participate. The venue worked well for dropping off, sorting and for selling the donations. This may be the final year that we are able to use the Fire Hall as the Town of Sackville may be decommissioning this building later this year. The hall was made available for a full week with set up, drop offs and sorting possible Tuesday through Friday evening. The Sackville Curling Club loaned us the tables to put all of the items on. The sale hours were shortened slightly as there has been little activity after noon in the past. Packing up was done on Saturday afternoon and the Salvation Army truck was able to pick up all of the left over items on Monday following the sale. A total of $1920.00 was raised before expenses for printing, rental and signage ($ 28.91), were accounted for. Recommendations for next year include arranging for a new venue early, and promoting the event as early as possible. The Fire Department held their breakfast the same morning and graciously allowed us to leave a large sign at their event. Chief Bowser was receptive to the idea of holding our two events on the same day in 2014 and doing some joint promotion. Although a few other community groups were approached this year to partner with us for the sale, none took us up on the offer. This could be looked into again next year. Thank you to the many volunteers and donors who helped to make this sale a success.

O.K.  Quoi?!  Arts  Festival  Barbeque

As part of the O.K. Quoi?! Arts Festival, organizers invite community non-profits to host a fundraiser barbeque during the noon hour each week. TFRC was invited to host two of the fundraisers this past summer, raising approximately $100 for programs and services. The weather cooperated, and the canopy Storytent was used to provide some shade.

1st  Annual  TFRC  Fall  Fair  Book  Sale   The TFRC had the opportunity to host their first Book Sale as a fundraising opportunity passed on to them from the IODE on September 19 & 20, 2013. Hundreds of books were donated to the TFRC. Numerous volunteers were recruited from the board and the community for the many hours needed to sort and load books. Donations were received from a few community yard sales, as well as Sackville and Dorchester Public Libraries. St. Paul's Anglican Church graciously offered the use of their church hall for the venue for Wednesday evening to set up, and for the Thursday and Friday sale dates. The extended hours of Thursday 4-8 PM and Friday 12-8 PM allowed for a longer period of time for the public to purchase their books. Approximately $1800 was raised over the two days of the sale. Marshview Middle School allowed the TFRC to store their leftover books from the Yard Sale in April until the date of the sale. This opportunity allowed TFRC to be able to host the sale this year, and will continue to offer this community service in the future. At the end of the sale, all of the left over books were offered to Rags of Time Used Books in Sackville as well as Amy's Used Books in Amherst. All books were picked up on Friday evening after the sale so that storage of the old books will not be required until next year's donations begin. We look forward to adding this fundraising activity as an annual event. Many thanks are extended to the IODE for generously offering this opportunity to us and to the many volunteers who assisted.
