Why  Standards?

International standards have become, at the same time, the price of admission to the global economy and the glue holding it together. Adherence to the standards is a condition of entry to the World

Trade Organization. And as the global economy grows,

so do they.

Why  get  involved  in  standards  development?

•  One  of  the  strengths  of  standards  is  that  they  are  created  by  the  people  that  need  them.

•  Industry  experts  drive  all  aspects  of  the  standard  development  process,  from  deciding  whether  a  new  standard  is  needed  to  defining  all  the  technical  content.

•  Gegng  involved  in  this  process  can  bring  significant  advantages  to  your  business.

Is  your  voice  heard?

• When  it  comes  to  developing  standards,  you’re  either  at  the  table…  or  you’re  on  the  menu  – Influence  the  standards  that  affect  you  – Be  recognized  for  your  contribu=ons  – Connect  with  poten=al  customers  and  suppliers

Views  from  industry

For us the benefits [of participating in the development

of standards] are twofold. First we bring our experience and

expertise to the table. And second, we thereby ensure

that our interests gain attention.

Wolfgang  Grosse  Head  of  Environment  &  Sustainability

Bayer  AG

Views  from  industry

The payoff for engaging in standards work is greater than

many small business people realize. For a company like Baltic Safety, it’s essential to get involved so we

can get started early with our planning for future projects.

   Per  Frode

CEO  Bal@c  Safety  Products

•  Don’t  develop  your  standards  at  the  kids  table  – Accredited,  interna=onally  recognized  – Proven  track  record  – Rules  that  protect  a  level  playing  field

Is  your  voice  heard?

Who  is  the  ISO?

•  Interna=onal  Organiza=on  for  Standardiza=on  is  the  world's  largest  developer  of  Interna=onal  Standards

•  ISO  is  a  non-‐governmental  network  of  the  na=onal  standards  ins=tutes  of  162  countries,  one  member  per  country

•  This  enables  ISO  to  reach  a  consensus  on  solu=ons  that  meet  both  the  requirements  of  business  and  society

•  One  country  =  one  vote

How  ISO  standards  are  developed?  •  The  na=onal  delega=ons  of  experts  of  a  commiLee  meet  to  discuss,  debate  and  argue  un=l  they  reach  consensus  on  a  draI  agreement

•  The  resul=ng  document  is  circulated  as  a  DraI  Interna=onal  Standard  (DIS)  to  all  ISO's  member  bodies  for  vo=ng  and  comment

•  If  the  vo=ng  is  in  favor,  the  document,  with  eventual  modifica=ons,  is  circulated  to  the  ISO  members  as  a  Final  DraI  Interna=onal  Standard  (FDIS)

Who  develops  ISO  standards?

•  ISO  standards  are  developed  by  groups  of  experts,  within  technical  commiLees  (TCs).

•  TCs  are  made  up  of  representa=ves  of  industry,  NGOs,  governments  and  other  stakeholders,  who  are  put  forward  by  ISO’s  members.

•  ISO  has  over  250  technical  commiLees.

My  standards  engagement  •  Standards  Bodies

– Mainly  ISO

•  Nature  of  engagement  –  SC7  convenor  of  mirror  comiLee  –  Editor/contributor  ISO/IEC  29110  (VSE),  ISO/IEC  15504  (SPICE),  ISO/IEC  12207,  IEC  62304  and  more…

•  Areas  –  SoIware  process,  process  assessment,  cer=fica=on,  soIware  quality,  soIware  tes=ng,  governance,  cloud  compu=ng

•  Industry  sectors  –  SoIware  development  in  general  and  medical  device  soIware  development

Lero©  2013

What  I  actually  do?  •  ALend  ISO  mee=ngs  (2+  =mes  per  year)  •  Par=cipate  in  discussion  groups  •  Contribute  to  standards  development  •  Edit  standards  documents  •  Keep  a  watching  eye  on  a  range  of  soIware  engineering  standards

•  Brief  /  advise  NSAI  •  Keep  interested  par=es  informed  •  Talk  at  event  like  this  •  And  lots  more…
