Filters Fast has a natural interest in health and wellness as it advocates cleaner air and water through the sale of fi ltration products. A few years ago, Filters Fast set out to improve the physical health of its employees by bringing a workout to the work day. Rather than start a jogging group or

baseball team, the organization brought in the TrekDesk, an elevated desk that wraps around a treadmill. Employees then walk one to two miles an hour while typing on a computer or talking on the phone, building a workout into their day without leaving their desk.

As Filters Fast started its TrekDesk journey, the massive tsunami of 2011 hit parts of Asia, killing hundreds of thousands of people. Th e horror of watching the tragedy unfold led the Filtersfast.com team to give back in a non-traditional way. “We decided to walk virtually to Japan and raise $1 a mile for relief eff orts,” says Dee Rubina, marketing manager for Filters Fast. “After six weeks of walking, we got from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Atlanta, Georgia. Not quite far enough.” Coming up a few thousand miles short turned out to be the catalyst for something greater.

“We decided on a new initiative and asked our customers, vendors, and local elementary students to donate their walked miles,” says Dee. “We even reached out to TrekDesk and told them about our eff orts, and they sent the information about our mileage program to their customers around the world.” Th at bump in mileage scope, plus the ability for Filters Fast customers to donate a dollar at the end of their order means that more than 50,000 miles were donated in 2012. All of the raised funds go to Wine To Water, a charity that installs wells in 13 diff erent countries and is led by Doc Hendley, a 2009 CNN Hero.

“We call this endeavor Th e W3 Project. It’s a collaborative eff ort between Filters Fast, TrekDesk, and Wine To Water, and the reason we started it was because more children die of water shortage than malaria, AIDS, and war combined,” says Dee. “Th e shortage of water is compounded by access to water, as the average woman and child in third world nations walk fi ve miles to get good water each day. Th at time spent getting water means they’re unable to attend school or work regularly. Walking for them and raising money to install these wells means they don’t have to walk as far themselves.”

In addition to the philanthropic aspect, Dee has experienced a gain linked to the original reason for using the desks – getting active and improving personal health. Before starting her job at Filters Fast, Dee lost 110 pounds. With small children at home and a hectic work and

life schedule, she worried about gaining it back since she’d be sitting at a desk at Filters Fast. Th e TrekDesk proved to be a fantastic solution, and Dee lost another 40 pounds.“Before I lost the 150 pounds, I wasn’t able to motivate myself,” says Dee. “Now I walk about 10 miles a day and, especially because of Th e W3 Project, I’m inspired to move and do things.”

Additionally, Dee shares that the children from the participating elementary schools are also a big motivator. Th rough this project, the children have learned about the global water crisis and want to get involved, donating the miles they walk, run, and dance throughout the year. Microsoft Dynamics NAV, too, has played a part in Th e W3 Project, and not from running miles of scripts. “We process all of our donations through Microsoft Dynamics NAV and give 100 percent of the raised funds to the charity as we cover all the processing costs within our organization,” says Dee. “When people donate a dollar on our website, it goes through Microsoft Dynamics NAV and is separated out and given to the charity.” A simple idea to live a healthier life is now doing good across the world. One mile, one dollar, and one well at a time.

Three Handy Account Schedule Tips to Get You ThroughI don’t know about your company, but my company is in full budget

preparation mode. We’re working on getting our sales forecast and operating budgets put together in time for year-end. Like most companies, we’re working on this predictive tool while we’re in the midst of fi nishing out the year, so of course, we get to make a few assumptions on how the year will end up. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I do have some pretty great account schedules that help folks at my company get a good solid look at where we ended up last year, what we planned for this year, and how we’ve done over a couple of years, and I’m going to share those three account schedule column layouts with you. Hopefully these simple setups will give you some quick ways to wow your company and make their budget construction process easier.Tip 1: Show 12 months of actual data

We ask our budget managers to give us a 12 month prediction, why shouldn’t we give them 12 months of data to work with? No matter what month you’ve just closed, you can quickly put together an account schedule that shows all of the completed months for the year (in this case, January-September) as well as October/November/December of the prior year. Th is way, if your activity is generally the same year over year, budget managers can get a quick gauge from this setup. Keep in mind this column layout isn’t dynamic, so it’s not a true rolling 12 months. For budgeting purposes, it’ll get you what you need.

Tip 2: Show nine months of actual data and show what the plan is for the last three months of the year

Another way to provide a projection for the year is to show all the completed months for the year (again, January-September) and

then show the budgeted plan for October/November/December. Th is method shows actual activity as well as three months of planned activity in order to project the total for the year. If activity this year is signifi cantly diff erent (higher or lower) from the year prior, you might depend on this view instead.

Tip 3: Show a whole bunch of history at a high level

Especially for sales forecasting, it sometimes gets diffi cult to look at too much data at once. One way to get past data analysis overload is to provide a few years’ worth of annual data. Th is column layout will give four years of data, helping you to compare not only year over year, but also multiple year trending in your data.

All three of these tips should give you a few additional tools to help you make sense of a whole lot of data. Th ey can be applied to almost any row setup you have whether that setup is related to revenue or expenses.Kerry Rosvold is the corporate controller at Augsburg Fortress Publishers.

I f you use the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Classic Client, you’ve probably noticed that you can close an open window simply by

hitting the Escape key instead of clicking the X icon. But did you know that you could very easily disable that?In the Classic Client, go to Tools > Options, and change the value of Close Forms on Esc to No.

While you’re in the Options window, take a look at some other options that you can easily change to aff ect Microsoft Dynamics NAV behavior. Th ese may interest even the novice User: » Status Bar: Hide the Status Bar that appears at the bottom of

the Classic Client by setting it to No (the client will need to be restarted before this takes eff ect) » Max. no. of XML records to send: Th e default value is set to 5,000. Th is is the maximum number of records that can be sent to Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word from Microsoft Dynamics NAV using the built-in Send-to functionality in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Toolbar. Th is can be changed as needed. But wait; there’s more!Don’t have your Microsoft Dynamics NAV Shortcut Key Cheat-sheet or keyboard guide handy? Don’t worry about it! Th e Microsoft Dynamics NAV Classic Client will tell you exactly what each F key does on any particular screen or form.For example, go to the Customer Card. Th en click the Help menu that appears in the toolbar on top (no, not the Help button on the card), and select Overview of F Keys. A window opens up that shows you what each F key does. Click on one of them and it will even perform the action for you. (If you click a button, the Overview window will close; you will have to go back to the Help menu and open the Overview window again.)

If you click where it says Shift or Ctrl, it will also show what the F keys do when used in combination with Shift or Ctrl.Note: Apparently, you can get to Overview of F Keys by pressing the Ctrl+Alt+F1 shortcut, but for some reason, it will not work for me (Windows 7 SP1, 64 bit, NAV 2009 R2). Can you believe 2012 is coming to an end? Neither can we!

NAVUG™ is all about connecting Users to share experiences, advice, and lessons

learned. If you made it to NAVUG Forum in Seattle, you saw that fi rsthand. I loved watching

our Users connect with each other and make invaluable contacts.

It has been such a busy year in NAVUG. We’ve had great growth as well as really fantastic

networking among our Users. Highlights of 2012 include:

» NAVUG passed the 1,000 company Member mark, doubling membership from 2010.

» More than 100 new companies joined as Premium Members.

» Th e renewal rate of our Premium Members is more than 85 percent, which really shows

the value our Members are getting out of the User group.

Celebrate Giants World Series Victory

Shortly after returning from this year’s spectacular NAVUG™ Forum

that was jam-packed with new, useful, and exciting information,

meaningful training, and plenty of opportunities to network with

fellow Microsoft Dynamics NAV Users and solution providers, our

company was about to experience something truly extraordinary...

Th is is the story of greatness defi ned. Just two years ago in 2010,

more than a half a century (52 years) in waiting, the San Francisco

Giants won the World Series. Emotions ran wild through the streets

of San Francisco and through the veins of every Giants fan. Some

were in total disbelief after so many years of waiting; others were

simply overjoyed. Whatever the emotion, everyone was proud of

their team. Th ey had played many a game that year and came out

victorious. But winning the World Series is never a sure thing. With

every Giants fan hoping and praying for another victorious end, the

2011 season came to an end with plenty of games played well, but not

well enough for another World Series title. Th e diehard fans simply

readjusted their aim toward 2012, and so did their team. As they say,

“Th e rest is history!”

October 31, 2012, was a day to remember. Fans put on their orange

and black colors not only to celebrate Halloween, but also

to celebrate something very, very sweet and special. San

Francisco’s Market Street began fi lling up with proud fans

before the crack of dawn. Th e trains and buses were packed.

Th e bridges and highways were in sheer gridlock. Every

Giants fan from everywhere wanted to participate in the

World Series Championship 2012 victory parade. By the

time the parade was to commence at the bottom of Market

Street at 11 a.m. en route to City Hall, a record one million

spectator-fans had amassed to show their appreciation for

the Giants’ second World Series win in just three years.

With more than 178 games played in eight months, two epic

postseason comebacks that truly stirred up the fan base,

and a winning sweep against the Detroit Tigers in a battle

to earn the prestigious title of World Series champions

with a 4-3, 10-inning victory for a second time, the win

was no easy task for the team or its fans. Otis McAllister’s

employees were hard at work attending every home game

and cheering their team on toward success. With each

game came the hope and anticipation of a repeat of the

2010 season. Fans not only cheered their team on, they

wore their jerseys, posted signs attesting to their support,

and hung banners and pennants throughout the offi ce. At

Otis McAllister, we believe that it was our dedicated, diehard support

that helped contribute to the Giants’ success – or at least we’d like

to think so. Needless to say, we are so looking forward to the 2013

season...Go Giants!

Bradshaw recently decided to measure its customers’

experience but in a very simple and easy way by using the Net

Promoter System method. Th e basic theory is to ask only one

question from the customer: “What is the likelihood that you would

recommend Bradshaw to a friend or colleague?” Bradshaw added one

more question by asking responders, “What is the primary reason for

your response?”

Bradshaw tallied the responses and is happy to say that its overall

customer Net Promoter Score is a solid 67. Th e rule of thumb is that

any score over zero is good, and any score over 50 is excellent, so

Bradshaw is very proud and appreciative for its score. Its mission to

make customers smile is in full swing!

(TCCA), a farmer-owned dairy co-op, was recognized among a

select group of Oregon companies for its commitment to community

giving at the Portland Business Journal’s annual Corporate

Philanthropy Awards. TCCA received one of three “Innovation

in Philanthropy” awards which recognize unique partnerships

between companies and non-profi t organizations. In TCCA’s case,

the recognition was for its ice cream booth partnership with the

Tillamook County 4-H Leaders Association at the Tillamook County

Fair.  As part of the partnership, TCCA employees and co-op members

work together with 4-H youth and parent volunteers to scoop and

When Lynn Singer joined the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) as a part-time bookkeeper

in 1985, the accounting field was supported by three primary tools: paper, pens, and adding machines.

“We had about 1,500 members at the time, and we used a ‘one-write’ accounting system,” she says. “All of it was manual. I had to bill all 1,500 members by hand and manually total columns of figures to post to the handwritten general ledger. I handwrote about 150 checks each month and then had to total columns of numbers again to create a journal entry.”

When Singer asked the previous bookkeeper about automating the accounting, she was told that it wouldn’t be possible to use a computer system because the association was too unique. “I did not accept that answer,” Singer recalls today. “I’d come out of a manufacturing background, so I approached our billing with that mindset, and after a lot of research, I found SBT software and set out to customize our billing while using the canned part of the AP package.”

While a lot has changed since then – including the rise of Microsoft Dynamics NAV – one of the things that has remained constant at POAM is Singer’s refusal to take “no” for an answer. She is now the controller for POAM, which has evolved into a labor organization for more than 10,000 public sector employees. It has annual sales of $5 million and 23 employees, most of whom Singer says have no accounting background and little computer experience.

That makes the ease with which Microsoft Dynamics NAV can be used a key benefit. But equally important, says Singer, is the solution’s ability to accommodate growth.

Recently, in response to the 290 new members from a remote part of the state – the Upper Peninsula or, in local parlance, the UP – POAM added an employee there as well. Microsoft Dynamics NAV, says Singer, makes it possible for the new employee and the new members to connect to the overall organization online. She’s preparing for growth from other parts of the state as well. “There are about 25,000 law enforcement professionals in the state of Michigan, so we do have room to grow,” she says. “That’s one of the things I like about Microsoft Dynamics NAV: It can grow with us.”

Also important to Singer is the solution’s ability to help her strike a balance. “Most of my work has to be low tech for inside reports and Users, but high tech for my auditors and outside agencies,” she says. “In addition, my budget is very small. Microsoft Dynamics NAV has been great for meeting those demands under my financial constraints.”

To gain an even deeper level of benefits, two years ago Singer joined the Microsoft Dynamics NAV User Group, and last year, in Las Vegas, she attended her first national NAVUG gathering. “I left overwhelmed from all the information I had, but in a good way,” she says. “This year, when I went to Seattle, I had a better handle on what to expect.” Specific knowledge she brought back to Michigan with her includes learning to create budgets and use the fixed asset functionality, ideas for various projects she’s working on, including ACH payments and payroll issues, and, most exciting to Singer personally, figuring out how to lock people out of GL and forbid them from posting to years that are already closed.

What does she hope to learn next year? She’s not sure, but whatever it is, she’s looking forward to it. “I cannot wait for Tampa,” she says. NAVUG

Three Handy Account Schedule Tips to Get You Through

I don’t know about your company, but my company is in full budget preparation mode. We’re working on getting our sales forecast

and operating budgets put together in time for year-end. Like most companies, we’re working on this predictive tool while we’re in the midst of finishing out the year, so of course, we get to make a few assumptions on how the year will end up. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I do have some pretty great account schedules that help folks at my company get a good solid look at where we ended up last year, what we planned for this year, and how we’ve done over a couple of years, and I’m going to share those three account schedule column layouts with you. Hopefully these simple setups will give you some quick ways to wow your company and make their budget construction process easier.

Tip 1: Show 12 months of actual data

We ask our budget managers to give us a 12-month prediction, why shouldn’t we give them 12 months of data to work with? No matter what month you’ve just closed, you can quickly put together an account schedule that shows all of the completed months for the year (in this case, January-September) as well as October/November/December of the prior year. This way, if your activity is generally the same year over year, budget managers can get a quick gauge from this setup. Keep in mind this column layout isn’t dynamic, so it’s not a true rolling 12 months. For budgeting purposes, it’ll get you what you need.

Tip 2: Show nine months of actual data and show what the plan is for the last three months of the year

Another way to provide a projection for the year is to show all the completed months for the year (again, January-September) and

then show the budgeted plan for October/November/December. This method shows actual activity as well as three months of planned activity in order to project the total for the year. If activity this year is significantly different (higher or lower) from the year prior, you might depend on this view instead.

Tip 3: Show a whole bunch of history at a high level

Especially for sales forecasting, it sometimes gets difficult to look at too much data at once. One way to get past data analysis overload is to provide a few years’ worth of annual data. This column layout will give four years of data, helping you to compare not only year over year, but also multiple year trending in your data.

Tip 2: Show nine months of actual data and show what the plan is for the last three months of the year

Another way to provide a projection for the year is to show all the completed months for the year (again, January-September) and then show the budgeted plan for October/November/December. This method shows actual activity as well as three months of planned activity in order to project the total for the year. If activity this year is significantly different (higher or lower) from the year prior, you might depend on this view instead.

of Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009. Brett and his team recently

completed the TAP for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013, bringing 13

Customers across the world live with the product. We sat down with

Brett to talk about Partner and Customer programs, including the

NAV Customer Council, his newest project.

NAVUG™: Has the TAP program been a benefi cial addition to

your team’s product feedback activities?

Brett Johnson (BJ): Yes, it has really benefi ted the product, Customers,

and Partners. Th e TAP has expanded in the role of Customers and

Partners, and its contribution to the development eff ort is to bring

their input into the product so we can be sure that what we produce in

each release is what our Customers and Partners want.

Th e TAP and beta programs have also brought forth hundreds

of really important fi xes. Our early adopters share what they’ve

experienced, and we can then fi x those issues.

NAVUG: In addition to TAP, how do you gather that feedback?

BJ: We also gather feedback from our beta programs, which are

broader than TAP. TAP is very narrow in focus, looking for bugs and

obstacles to going live with the product. It’s very technical and specifi c

to getting the Customer live. We also get feedback from the Connect

tool (connect.microsoft.com) and events such as NAVUG Forum

through Conduit Sessions and meetings with Users and Partners.

Right now we’re working on a program called the Agile Customer

Engagement Initiative (ACE), which will help us in getting Customer

feedback earlier in the development cycle and making sure it’s more

specifi c than feedback we’ve received in the past. ACE is also an

opportunity for Customers who want to give give targeted feedback

but don’t want to be in the TAP program or in a beta program.

NAVUG: You just launched the NAV Customer Council. What

can you tell us about this new board?

BJ: Th is idea started at NAVUG Forum from talking with Customers

and Trish (Boccuti). We wanted a way for interested Customers to

give us a little information about themselves so the R&D team can

reach out to people based on their roles and how they use Microsoft

Dynamics NAV.

Th e goal is to build a rolodex of people who are interested in talking

with the R&D team and answering questions from the very general

“what’s it like to do your job” to the very specifi c “we’ve developed

this new feature, can you click on this link to test it and tell us what

you think.”

NAVUG: Have you had a good response to the program thus far?

BJ: So far it’s been a good response. We just announced it during

NAVUG Forum, so we’re only a few months in. Our team has been

contacting Customers in Denmark for a while now, so it will be good

to have some User contacts in the U.S. as well.

NAVUG: What would be a big win for you with the NAV Customer

Council?

BJ: Having ongoing engagement with Users, not only for this release,

but also for future releases. I’d like for us to get to know Customers

and have them reach out with questions. On a technical note, we’re

focused on adding SMB-type features and functionality to the next

release of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, making it easier to use out of the

box with less need for customization. Having this ongoing dialogue

will help us ensure we have the right features and deployment

experience for Customers who want to work with Microsoft

Dynamics NAV themselves.

NAVUG: How can a User join the Council?

BJ: A link to an interest form is available on the NAVUG website at

www.navug.com/member-resources/nav-customer-council. Interested

Users can sign up there, and then we’ll get that information to our R&D

team so the engagement between both parties can begin. Th e goal is

to make this easy and not a huge time commitment, but still a valuable

experience.

Th is is a fun community to work with because there are so many

people that have had success with Microsoft Dynamics NAV. I like

seeing how our product does well within their businesses and how Users

take on challenges and growing their businesses. Microsoft Dynamics

NAV is a well-loved product amongst Users and Partners, and we’ve

built an enthusiastic community in NAVUG and at large. NAVUG

Filters Fast has a natural interest in health and wellness as it advocates cleaner air and water through the sale of filtration products. A few years ago, Filters Fast set out to

improve the physical health of its employees by bringing a workout to the work day.

Rather than start a jogging group or baseball team, the organization brought in the TrekDesk, an elevated desk that wraps around a treadmill. Employees then walk one to two miles an hour while typing on a computer or talking on the phone, building a workout into their day without leaving their desk.

As Filters Fast started its TrekDesk journey, the massive tsunami of 2011 hit parts of Asia, killing hundreds of thousands of people. The horror of watching the tragedy unfold led the Filtersfast.com team to give back in a non-traditional way.

“We decided to walk virtually to Japan and raise $1 a mile for relief efforts,” says Dee Rubina, marketing manager for Filters Fast. “After six weeks of walking, we got from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Atlanta, Georgia. Not quite far enough.”

Coming up a few thousand miles short turned out to be the catalyst for something greater.

“We decided on a new initiative and asked our customers, vendors, and local elementary students to donate their walked miles,” says Dee. “We even reached out to TrekDesk and told them about our efforts, and they sent the information about our mileage program to their customers around the world.”

That bump in mileage scope, plus the ability for Filters Fast customers to donate a dollar at the end of their order means that more than 50,000 miles were donated in 2012. All of the raised funds go to Wine To Water, a charity that installs wells in 13 different countries and is led by Doc Hendley, a 2009 CNN Hero.

“We call this endeavor The W3 Project. It’s a collaborative effort between Filters Fast, TrekDesk, and Wine To Water, and the reason we started it was because more children die of water shortage than malaria, AIDS, and war combined,” says Dee. “The shortage of water is compounded by access to water, as the average woman and child in third world nations walk five miles to get good water each day. That time spent getting water means they’re unable to attend school or work regularly. Walking for them and raising money to install these wells means they don’t have to walk as far themselves.”

In addition to the philanthropic aspect, Dee has experienced a gain linked to the original reason for using the desks – getting active and improving personal health. Before starting her job at Filters Fast, Dee lost 110 pounds. With small children at home and a hectic work and

life schedule, she worried about gaining it back since she’d be sitting at a desk at Filters Fast. The TrekDesk proved to be a fantastic solution, and Dee lost another 40 pounds.

“Before I lost the 150 pounds, I wasn’t able to motivate myself,” says Dee. “Now I walk about 10 miles a day and, especially because of The W3 Project, I’m inspired to move and do things.”

Additionally, Dee shares that the children from the participating elementary schools are also a big motivator. Through this project, the children have learned about the global water crisis and want to get involved, donating the miles they walk, run, and dance throughout the year.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV, too, has played a part in The W3 Project, and not from running miles of scripts.

“We process all of our donations through Microsoft Dynamics NAV and give 100 percent of the raised funds to the charity as we cover all the processing costs within our organization,” says Dee. “When people donate a dollar on our website, it goes through Microsoft Dynamics NAV and is separated out and given to the charity.”

A simple idea to live a healthier life is now doing good across the world. One mile, one dollar, and one well at a time. NAVUG

Kerry Rosvold, corporate controller with Augsburg Fortress Publishers, and Daniel Rimmelzwaan, business analyst with

ArcherPoint, share their talents with NAVUG™ Academy by teaching in-depth courses to Microsoft Dynamics NAV Users. We caught up with Kerry and Daniel to hear their take on the value of the courses for Users, why they like to teach, and what it feels like to hear the success stories from Users who have attended their classes.

A Customized ExperienceTo Kerry and Daniel, the value of Academy classes comes

down to a customized learning experience. “The problems that are solved in class are focused on the

Users’ businesses, and sometimes we only need to fix one or two things to make Microsoft Dynamics NAV work better for them,” says Kerry. “You can’t get that experience from reading the manual or doing an online tutorial.”

That actual hands-on experience also taps into an additional learning style, giving Users the ability to put what they’ve heard and read into practice.

“Different people have different styles of learning,” says Daniel. “By having a hands-on lab, you not only get to show them, but they also can do it by themselves.”

Reciprocal Learning“What goes around, comes around” aptly describes Kerry

and Daniel’s attitudes towards teaching. Kerry generally teaches finance, account schedule, and dimension-focused classes

while Daniel focuses on database optimization, performance troubleshooting, development, and technical issues.

“I love sharing knowledge and helping people understand the matter at hand,” says Daniel. “When you’re in a classroom and see people with big question marks over their heads, and then you see that question mark turn into an exclamation point, that’s the best part of teaching – seeing that light go on.”

In line with the teaching credo mentioned above, it’s not just the User who is having that light go on.

“I like teaching because I like learning,” says Kerry. “I might learn a better way to teach or do something that’s a little bit different. I like to give back to the community, and teaching classes is one way to do it.”

Implementing Ideas and Finding Success

There are so many great success stories that come out of classes, and Kerry and Daniel’s classes are no exception. From implementing tips such as adding more dimensions to cutting an entire day of work out of month-end to learning how to customize reports in a more efficient manner, Users are experiencing productivity they didn’t know possible before taking a class.

“It’s incredible to see an attendee’s ‘aha’ moment when they smile and say that information just paid for the class,” says Kerry. “The implementation of the webinar classes this year has also been great because not everybody can afford to travel for classes. It’s a great opportunity to reach more people.” NAVUG

client expectations regarding Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013, the opportunity in the cloud, and what the company gets out of its NAVUG™ membership.

NAVUG: What are your clients most excited about when it comes to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013?HP: They’re excited about being able to leverage it from anywhere. They’re also excited about the integration with SharePoint®.

The investment that Microsoft is making into Microsoft Dynamics products is impressive. It’s also becoming even more beneficial that Microsoft Dynamics products are part of the larger “stack” offering from Microsoft and that Users are able to leverage Office®, SQL, and now Windows® 8.

We’re headed in a great direction, and it’s our job as Partners to help our clients understand how to use this technology to their benefit.

NAVUG: You’ve been an advocate of the cloud. What are the main benefits of a cloud-based deployment?HP: The cloud provides a lot of benefits, such as the “pay as you go” option which offers a lower total cost of ownership for clients’ systems, freeing up their resources from managing and maintaining servers. When we talk to prospective Users, the opportunity to off-load that server management to a Partner is attractive.

Being able to access Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 from anywhere with an Internet connection is a powerful story as well.

NAVUG: What’s the value proposition of the cloud for a User who has already purchased the servers and implemented Microsoft Dynamics NAV on premise?

HP: When a User looks at a software upgrade, they’re also looking at upgrading SQL, hardware, and so on, and that comes with an additional cost. When you understand the necessary components, you realize that if you’re looking to upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013, then it’s a perfect time to evaluate the cloud option.

Many small and mid-sized businesses don’t treat their ERP solution as mission critical, but it needs to be. A User needs to ask themselves what an acceptable downtime is with regard to their business. They also need to make sure they have adequate resources to handle their system, and moving to the cloud is one step towards that. It really does give Users an opportunity to a tier 1 environment without the tier 1 cost of doing it themselves.

When Microsoft first made its cloud announcement a few years ago, it was fantastic. That has come to fruition now, and the cloud today is much more functional than the thought of it was three years ago.

NAVUG: What do you have coming up in the next six months?HP: We are finalizing an offering for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 in the cloud, and we’re helping our clients start to think more about SharePoint and BI. It’s important for them to prepare for greater visibility and BI tools through SQL 2012 and Excel® integrations. We want to get more involved in NAVUG and have planned activities around Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013.

NAVUG: We’re glad to have you as part of NAVUG. What’s the greatest benefit to your organization when it comes to your involvement?HP: NAVUG offers us a great deal of benefit that we can extend to our clients. Part of the benefit is not just the value of the sessions, but being in a conference center with Users who go through similar experiences and being able to collaborate and share success stories and challenges with one another. Being part of a larger community is something we believe in. You get out what you put in, and that’s why we participate. NAVUG

Lanham Associates has been delivering supply chain solutions inside of Microsoft Dynamics NAV since 1997. They were the original creators of Advanced Dstribution for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, which was sold to Navision Software just before the Microsoft acquisition. Lanham

then focused on expanding supply chain solutions to EDI, shipping, forecasting and replenishment, and WMS, delivering solutions to more than 1,750 organizations and 90,000 Users in 33 countries.

NAVUG: You had a busy fall, introducing a new product at NAVUG Forum. Tell us a little about that product.Dale Lanham (DL): ACE One is an entry level warehouse management solution for companies in the midmarket. We’ve made it very simple to use so that Users find it easy to transition from no warehouse management software to ACE One. It was also created with an easy transition path to our full-blown WMS product, ACE Warehousing, for Customers that graduate into more complex WMS needs like combined and wave picks, license plating, pallet-level detail, auto break-bulk, and lot and serial number tracking.Mary Lanham (ML): There’s a lot of discipline in a full warehouse solution, and if a User organization hasn’t implemented WMS in the past, it’s hard to go from free reign to a full solution. Many of our Customers asked if we could do something like this, and we’re live now in multiple Customer locations.

NAVUG: Do you have any other product releases planned within the next six months?ML: We’re always advancing our products, especially EDI where large Customers are making more and more creative demands on their suppliers, our Users. At the moment, though, we have an intense focus on ramping up our services division as we’ve had many requests from Partners to help support their Customers with a variety of business processes, including implementation, training, and support on our products. We’re also hearing from EDI Users that they want somebody to come in and support that part of their business. In the past, EDI Users wanted to control it themselves, but now many want to focus their resources on their internal business processes rather than on the technology that supports those processes. We can definitely handle this for them.

Also, we’ve worked on achieving Certified for Microsoft Dynamics (CfMD) and certifications from UPS, FedEx, and the United States Postal Service for our products. It’s hard work, but

we now have certified products that have been sanctioned by all the major players.

NAVUG: A lot of Users are making or thinking about the transition to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013. What do you feel are the key benefits to the new release?DL: The Microsoft team has done a lot of work, and the web and SharePoint portals and application enhancements are substantial performance improvements. Not only are there new User interfaces, but also having a dashboard in a web browser for light Users and executives is a great addition.

NAVUG: There’s a lot of talk about the cloud these days. Are you looking at an online option for your products?ML: We have relationships with multiple hosting Partners, which allows Users to have access to our products in the cloud.

NAVUG: You’re veterans in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV community. After 15 years in the industry, what keeps you excited about what you do?ML: The Users and Partners in this community are very real and passionate about what they do. People who are drawn to “where the rubber meets the road” end up with Microsoft Dynamics NAV, looking for results and making things happen in a short period of time. Those are good people to work with!

NAVUG: What was the best part of this year’s NAVUG Forum for you?DL: The attendance was great, and there was so much energy around Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013. NAVUG Forum is our chance to meet some of our Customers face to face for the first time as well as connect with others we’ve known for years. ML: I noticed a lot of enthusiasm in the Users this year. People have held off for years on upgrading their infrastructure, and now they have the budgets and are very serious about topics in which they have interest.

NAVUG: What advice do you have for a User who is looking to get more involved in NAVUG this coming year?ML: There is so much good that comes from talking with peers and sharing ideas. We look for that feedback on our products as well and wouldn’t have ACE One if we didn’t get that feedback from Users. DL: We’re founding members of Directions, which brings Microsoft Dynamics NAV Partners together. NAVUG is the same thing for Users. The whole idea of not being out there alone is a benefit and something that’s really important to remember.ML: Exactly.
