I would like to start off our next semester together with a quote from Walt Disney, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” I hope that we will all be curious in 2013, and that this curiosity leads us each down a path of opportunity. I would like to thank all of the Tribe Members who were able to participate this past semester, whether in the flesh or from a remote location. You all keep this Tribe alive. As mentioned previously, we have been working diligently to launch a secure, online Iron Arrow database that only members can access through Alumni Channel. Furthermore, I would like to thank Raul Alvarez, Jose Armario, and Dean Meyers for their donation to the Tribe, which will be combined with other tribe members’ donations and used for casting a new fire bowl for The Mound. Last, but not least, I would like to congratulate our new Medicine Man, Adam Bofill. The Officers and I look forward to seeing many of you at Tribal activities during the spring semester. Iron Arrow Honor SocietyTribal Gatherings

This fall the tribe shared h a p p y m o m e n t s a n d supported each other as well through a variety of activities.

In August Fall orientation began with our entering Class of 2016 learning the alma

mater from those who know this song by heart—Iron Arrow! The students used a special song sheet which was part of a complete history of the University of Miami in poster form, which now adorns many dorm walls and which reflects our role as keepers of the history and traditions. The poster was distributed throughout the fall at tribal programs and will also be available for tribe members at Spring activities.

Homecoming 2012 was earlier than usual this year, but as always Iron Arrow was in the thick of the celebration of all things U. Tapping Day on October 18 brought sunshine and a few showers but the brief downpour couldn’t dampen spirits, as the outstanding Class of Fall 2012 was selected (see page 4). This year the tribal presence on campus from tapping through the Alumni Avenue, Honor Court, and other activities of the weekend was prominently featured in media coverage by the UM Office of Communications.

On Wednesday, October 24th it was a pow-wow in the University Center, as the tribe hosted a unique and very enjoyable evening of communal learning. To a rapt audience that included Fall tappees and UM students, tribe members shared their memories of times past at the University, including stories from every corner of the U. Tales of Greek life, athletics, student involvement, and memories treasured and cherished were all part of this fun-filled and warm session.

On November 11, the tribe gathered to support our talented and dedicated photographer and tribe member JC Ridley, who suffered a tragic loss with the suicide of his son, Shawn, earlier in the year. JC and a group of fellow IA members participated in the 2012 Out of Darkness walk for suicide prevention. Although the day was a somber one, the spirit of the tribe shone forth-‘if you ever need help, reach out and an Iron Arrow will be there’.

On November 18 an intrepid band ventured deep into Pa-Hay-Okee, the River of Grass, for the Fall Family Day outing: a canoe trip in the Everglades. Members explored deep into the back country, and experienced the unique South Florida ecosystem and environment upon which many of our most cherished traditions are based. No one tipped over, everyone who left came back safe and sound and thus the day was declared a resounding success!

Spring 2013 will bring many more opportunit ies to spend t ime together and we hope you will be part of making more memories.

Meet the New Medicine Man: Adam Bofill

At the Iron Arrow business meeting on November 28, Adam Bofill (BS/MS BME ’14) was elected to serve as Medicine Man for the remainder of this academic year.

Adam is a native Miamian who is studying for the combined Bachelor/Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering, with a concentration in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Business Administration. Adam’s involvement at the U is deep and wide-he is currently serving as the Chair of the Engineering Student Ambassadors, Vice President of Recruitment for the Interfraternity Council, Vice Chair of the Association of Greek Letter Organizations, Vice President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Secretary of the Order of Omega. Adam has also been a member of the President’s 100, Relay for Life, Association of Commuter Students, Federacion de Estudiantes Cubanos, Great Start, Student Government Advisory Board and the Biomedical Engineering Honor Society.

Adam has received numerous honors including induction into Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Alpha Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. He was tapped into Iron Arrow in Fall 2012.

So if you see a very busy young man racing about campus, check closely for a drum, a long shirt and a big smile because it may well be Adam Bofill!

NEW!! Online Member Management System!

On February 1, 2013, Iron Arrow will launch its transition to a modern management system for conducting its business and serving its membership.

In 1999, Chief Johann Ali had a master vision for modernizing the way the Tribe operated, a key piece of which was to have a live database that members could access online and maintain their contact information, pay for their membership dues, order merchandise, and perhaps most importantly, search for and connect with their fellow Iron Arrows, the new online membership management system is a giant leap forward for the Tribe. The new system does all of what Chief Ali envisioned, and more!

When members visit the Iron Arrow website, they will be presented with a “member login” link that will initially allow them to search for, verify and activate their account. They can then correct or add contact information, include years served as an officer, year and semesters tapped and initiated, and search for other members based on a multitude of parameters. The system also hosts an online community, electronic bulletin boards, and allows the Officers to disseminate information rapidly and effectively via email, social media, and even by fax. No longer will you have to worry about paying your annual dues - the system presents you with a reminder when the new academic year rolls around! As the system is brought online and more of it is deployed, more functionality will be added, in accordance with University’s policies and limits. There will be a learning curve, so we will be providing a tutorial as well that can be completed online.

Everyone is highly encouraged and indeed requested to be on the lookout for this new system and to maximize its usage!
