Tina Hill began her fifth year as Director of Athletics at Ran-dolph College in 2012-2013.

Hill has spent the past 20 years in the field of NCAA Division III athletics, having worked at Cornell College, California Lutheran University,

and Elizabethtown College.

Prior to her arrival at Randolph, Hill served as the director of athletics at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, for five years. As the Ram’s first full-time athletics director, she was responsible for the complete administration of the college’s 19 NCAA varsity sports as well as its intramural program.

Before her time at Cornell College, Hill served as the as-sociate director of athletics at California Lutheran University from 1997-2002. During that time, she assisted with the administration of the university’s 15-sport athletics pro-gram. From 1990-1997 Hill worked at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. She began her career with the Blue Jays as an intern before eventually serving as the associate director of athletics and as a staff instructor in physical education during her final four years at the college.

Hill received her B.S. in physical education from the Uni-versity of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and her M.S. in sports management from the University of Richmond. As an un-dergraduate at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Hill was a two-time first team all-conference volleyball player.

As the Randolph College Director of Athletics, Hill coordi-nates the daily operations as well as the long-term objec-tives of the WildCats’13-sport intercollegiate athletics program.

Hill is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. She has served on various NCAA and conference committees, including a term as the chair of the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Committee.

HEAD COACH ALEXIS WAGNER

Alexis Wagner just began her fourth season as the WildCats head mentor in 2013, leading Ran-dolph to its most successful season in 2012. Wagner has been here since the program’s restart in 2010, leading the WildCats to their first victory, home victory and also the squad’s first ODAC win in 2012 over Sweet Briar. Randolph has also had three student-athletes honored on the All-ODAC lists since her arrival.

Wagner has coached at both the college and high school level in her coaching career. She served as assistant coach at Merrimack College in Andover, Massachusetts from 2004-2007. At Mer-rimack, Wagner assisted in all phases of the women’s lacrosse program including organizing and coaching practices, scouting opponents, and recruiting potential student-athletes. Wagner was instrumental in leading the Warriors to becoming a national power at the Division II level. During her

three seasons as assistant coach, Merrimack became nationally ranked for the first time in school history and broke over 16 school records. Wagner also coached four second team All-American players at Merrimack.

In 2008, Wagner switched to the high school ranks serving as the head lacrosse coach at Austin Prep in Reading, MA. At Austin Prep, Wagner was responsible for establishing and organizing a program that was in just its second year of existence.

Wagner also enjoyed an accomplished playing career starting with her time at Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA. She played four years at Lawrence before enrolling at Elmira College in upstate New York where she played three seasons at the Division III institution. Wag-ner finished her undergraduate degree in communications with a concentration in marketing at Merrimack in 2007.

2013 SEASON PREVIEW LYNCHBURG, VA – The 2012 version of the women’s lacrosse team at Randolph College accomplished many goals that now fourth-year head coach Alexis Wagner had envisioned for the team. Randolph earned four wins on the season last year, including picking up two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victories, the first two in program history. The Wildcats also have their first senior class this season, and with that brings a great group to lean on as a coach. Wagner commented on how nice it is to have a senior class, “It helps out your coaching, they know how things work. They understand how things work and in a way are like four coaches on and off the field for us.” The experienced depth that Randolph returns will only be a positive going forward. But now the WildCats have infused another recruiting class into this group that has gone from young to experienced and battle-tested over the last few years. Randolph is taking the right steps, and Wagner is excited about what this season may have in store. “We focused on fundamentals over the last few years, but now we’re adding some depth to it this season,” said Wagner. “We want to be able to change our game plan according to which team we are playing, and this year we can.” The focus on attacking this season will be great, especially since the WildCats have a very solid group of scorers back this season. The WildCats have the luxury of returning 100 percent of their scoring from last year’s team, as all 142 goals from last year’s team are back in the fold. “A lot of what we did was from up top last year, but we want to play from behind the net more this season, with an emphasis on our passing and team play.” Wagner brought up a good point about playing more together, as only 44 of the 142 goals scored for the WildCats last year were assisted on. She is hoping that the both the assist and goal totals will increase with the improved passing attack. “It’s going to take the team playing smart, seeing the openings in the eight, and working as a team to take that next step forward,” said Wagner. Leading the way offensively this season will be senior captain Danielle Haney (Norwood, PA/Interboro), as she led the WildCats with 44 goals and 13 assists a season ago. Haney is in her last go around with Randolph, and Wagner knows how important she will be this season. “She has nothing to lose at this point. She has become a smarter lacrosse player over the last few years, and I’m excited to see that progression this year,” said Wagner. Staying on the attack side of the ball, Randolph returns 19-goal scorer Samie Maggard (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) to the mix after a very solid season last year. Maggard had five multi-goal games last year and also has improved her conditioning and passing ability this off season and Wagner has taken notice. “She’s a great well-rounded lacrosse player,” said Wagner. “She’s in great shape, and her size makes her tough to defend.” Another returner on low attack will be Courtney Kellogg (Tewksbury, MA/Central Catholic). Kellogg has played a lot of minutes in her tenure with the WildCats, starting all 15 games a year ago. She scored three times, and her experience will be important to newcomers on attack like first-years Natalie Flores (San Antonio, TX/John Marshall) and Stephanie Perlitz (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsbor-ough). Both Flores and Perlitz are smaller players but both have athletic backgrounds and are hard workers. The midfield situation for Randolph this season is full of well-rounded players that can play both ends of the field. Leading the way at midfield are sophomore Taylor Klevenz (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) and junior Ashley Edwards (Sumerduck, VA/Liberty-Bealeton). Klevenz, a third-team All-ODAC performer last season, led the team in draw controls, while finishing second in goals, ground balls and caused turnovers. Wagner was impressed by her transi-tion to the collegiate circuit last year, but also expects a big step forward this season. “She’s just an all-around athlete with great field sense,” said Wagner. “She has the ability to keep it simple and still put up big numbers.” Edwards sometimes flies under the radar for the WildCats, but quite possibly could be the team’s most complete player. In program history, no other player is in the top three in career points, goals, assists, caused turnovers, draw controls and ground balls except Edwards. Last season, Edwards was in the top 10 in the ODAC in ground balls, draw controls, and caused turnovers. “She is a staple for us,” said Wagner. “She has improved her shot and she’s starting to put everything together. You’ll see her play some center for us again, and we’d like to see her take charge of our midfield this season. We want her to help the midfield transition and be part of those beautiful moments that we’ve seen from her.” A new name for the WildCats this season in the offensive midfield will be first-year Taylor Riccardi (Lexington, VA/Rock Bridge). Riccardi is as fluid with the ball as they come, but as always with new players will have a transitional period. “She’s a natural lacrosse player, the stick skills are smooth and we’re excited about having her with crew of returners.” The midfield is also fortunate to bring back a pair of players that are more defensive minded, but still bring a huge contribution to the table. Junior Melanie Eisele (Kennett Square, PA/Sanford School) was voted a team captain, and has flourished in that role. Fellow junior Nushaa Kaz (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) plays with a passion on the field and returns after scoring 10 goals and picking up 17 ground balls in 2012. Another addition to the midfield will be Fran Klostermyer (Belk Mead, NJ/Montgomery). Klostermyer has impressed coaches with her physicality and strength, and her prowess on draws and clears will be key for Randolph. “She is a beast on the field, to say the least,” said Wagner. “We were going to use her at defense, but her stride and athleticism plays better for us at middie.” The midfield will also be supplemented by first-year Carrie McCane (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest). McCane is from the area and could be one of the fastest players on the team, but is still work-ing her way into the rotation for the WildCats. Moving back to the defensive third of the field, the WildCats have the pleasure of having three seniors to anchor the defense. Randolph’s stay at home defender and All-ODAC third teamer from last year Ashley Stevens (Leicester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) led the ODAC in ground balls, and is expected to have another strong year. “She does a nice job with bodying up on players and taking charge on crash calls,” said Wagner. Next to Stevens will be fellow classmate Jess Andersen (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville), a team captain in 2013. Andersen is fiery on the field, and plays with an intensity that few possess. Her athleticism makes it possible to play her at different positions, but her most effective spot has been as lockdown defender. “She has worked so hard in the off-season, and is in the best shape of her life,” said Wagner on Andersen. “She makes that extra effort on and off the field, and is such a leader for our team.” The last senior on defense will be Morgan Thompson (Sandy Hook, VA/Goochland), who has in only two years gone from a newcomer to the game to a very solid, long defender with good checking ability. The last line of the defense is the goalkeeper, and the WildCats have something this year that they have never had in the four years of existence: two goalkeepers. Sophomore Samantha Fagone (Bayshore, NY/Bayshore) returns after a very solid season, breaking most of the keeper records at the College as a first-year. “You know, she’s just a great kid,” said Wagner of Fagone. “When she’s in the net, she extremely aggressive, extremely loud, and she’s gotten the first-year jitters out and has taken charge. I’m expecting great things from her just based on the experience she got last year.” Coming in as a first-year to help take some of the pressure off of Fagone will be Sara Woodward (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Friends). Woodward is a take charge keeper, and loves to get of her net and make plays. “Sara is very quick, and listens very well,” said Wagner. “She has made huge strides over the first four weeks of preseason. She has great technical skills, steps to the ball, and clears well so we know we have a great situation with Sara and Sam in net.” In glancing at the schedule this season for the WildCats, it is obvious that Wagner scheduled more home games early to get her troops ready for the rigors of road ODAC games later in the year. Also, Randolph is starting its season two weeks earlier to give to space the games out more. “We’re trying to average around two games a week to prevent our players from running out of steam late,” said Wagner. Randolph will play six non-conference games this year, as Methodist University (Mar. 2), West Virginia Wesleyan (Mar. 5) and Meredith College (Mar. 9) all come to town within a week stretch. Randolph’s non-conference road schedule features tests at Southern Virginia University (Feb. 19), Piedmont College (Mar. 17) and at Ferrum College (Mar. 19.). Wagner noted, “We’ve got games against some newer programs as well as with teams that we’ve played hard in the last few years in Methodist and Ferrum, so we’re excited.” Randolph will have not have to wait very long to take on conference foes, as the WildCats host Virginia Wesleyan College February 23 at 5:30 pm for the home opener. Randolph will also host league opponents Guilford (Mar. 13), Bridgewater (Mar. 26), Lynchburg (Apr. 13) and Roanoke College (Apr. 20). The road ODAC slate will send Randolph to reigning ODAC champion Washington and Lee February 26th, followed by bouts at Randolph-Macon College (Mar. 23), Hollins University (Apr. 3), Shenandoah University (Apr. 10) and Sweet Briar College (Apr. 17). Looking at the schedule, Wagner understands the challenges ahead for her team but also has goals that she wants to accomplish just like last year’s squad. “We want to get to .500, and we want to make a statement in the ODAC,” said Wagner. “Last year, we could hang with some league teams but ran out of gas, so this year with our depth, experience and leadership I’m hoping we can make our mark. I want our seniors to know that they have left a lasting impression, and getting some great wins and progressing is what we’re hoping for.”

ODAC CONFERENCE

Celebrating its 37th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation's largest Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country. The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name chane to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washing-ton and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men's varsity sports, including foot-ball, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women's sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with three single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the confer-ence in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. National RankingsHow does Randolph College measure up?

To get an unbiased opinion and see how Randolph compares to other colleges and universities, take a look at some of our recent national rankings:

• Forbes Best College Buys - Randolph College was the only private college in Vir-ginia named a Best College Buy in the 2009 rankings from Forbes.com and the Cen-ter for College Affordability and Productivity (CACP). Randolph College also earned a spot in Forbes America’s Best 600 Colleges list, the Best Liberal Arts Colleges list, and the Best Colleges in the South list. • The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) surveys undergraduates at four-year colleges and universities to assess the extent to which they engage in a variety of good educational practices. Randolph scored consistently and substantially higher than both the national average and the major-ity of liberal arts schools nationwide. •Colleges of Distinction, which honors a select group of colleges and universities, cited us for excelling in four areas: “Engaged Students,” “Great Teaching,” “Vibrant Communities,” and “Successful Outcomes.” • The Fiske Guide to Colleges, 2010 edition, gave the College high praise for the rigor of its academic programs, naming it one of the na-tion’s “best and most interesting” colleges. Randolph is one of just 12 Virginia colleges and 330 nationwide to be recognized. The Fiske

profile touts Randolph’s strong academic programs, faculty/student relationships, close community, and international focus. • The Princeton Review’s Best 371 Colleges 2010 edition, named Randolph a “Best Southeast College” and lauded the College’s outstanding academics. The diversity of our student body also earned praise as Randolph ranked 12th among all colleges in having a high level of interaction between students of different races and classes. “Admitting highly qualified and well-matched students is a top priority at Randolph,” the authors said, adding that “Randolph is looking for independent, confident students who place a premium on their educations.” • U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2010 edition, ranked us 118 out of 266 national liberal arts colleges in the country, placing us in Tier One of their rankings. Randolph was also recognized for the diversity of our student body and our global focus, ranking 7th among those colleges in the percentage of international students on campus.

•Seventeen Magazine recently named us as the 5th best small college in the nation. •The latest edition of Barron’s Best Buys in Education placed us in the top 10% of colleges and universities nationwide, based on faculty attention to students, inspiring programs, and opportunities for personal and professional development. CITY OF LYNCHBURG

Lynchburg is a scenic city located near the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia. The area has an extensive history beginning with its founding on the James River in the 1760's by John Lynch as "Lynch's Ferry." Today the city has an urban population of over 96,000, including the suburbs of Madison Heights, Timberlake, and Forest. Lynchburg's economy is based on the many high-tech manufacturing companies located here including cellular communications, nuclear energy, and machinery. This manu-facturing and research orientation represents a shift from the mill-based economy of the past, which included found-ries, shoes, and textiles. Education is well-represented with five area private colleges and a public community college. Health care includes two hospitals, one of which, Lynchburg General, has been recently renovated into a state-of-the-art facility for the next century. Lynchburg is sometimes referred to as "A City Unto Itself", in part due to geographic and cultural isolation, but mostly in reference to the city's historical avoidance of State and Federal entanglements. The phrase was the title of a history book by columnist Darrell Laurant.

Over 40 sites in Lynchburg are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lynchburg is the home of Central Virginia Community College, Liberty University, Lynchburg College, Randolph College, and Virginia Uni-versity of Lynchburg. The Lynchburg MSA also includes Sweet Briar College. Lynchburg boasts examples of Italian Renaissance, Federal, Georgian, Neo-Classical, Neo-Gothic, Romanesque, Jeffersonian, Queen

Anne, Second Empire, Colonial, and Art Deco styles. A number of sites and neighborhoods are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Primary roadways include U.S. Route 29, U.S. Route 501, U.S. Route 221, running north-south, and U.S. Highway 460, running east-west. While not served by an interstate, much of Route 29 has been upgraded to interstate standards and significant improvements have

been made to Highway 460. Amtrak's Crescent and Northeast Re-

gional trains connect Lynchburg with the cities of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham and New Orleans. Lynchburg became the new southern terminus for the Northeast Regional in October 2009. Amtrak's passenger terminal in Lynch-burg is located in the track level ground floor of Kemper Street Station.Lynchburg Regional Airport provides

service by US Airways Express to Charlotte. In recent months air travel has increased with 7,400 passengers flying in and out of the airport in April 2009—an increase of 97%. With this jump in passengers, flights have been added and the possibility of more carriers and destinations has become more likely.Attractions include Lynchburg Hillcats, Peaks of Otter, Crabtree Falls, Poplar Forest, and Phase 2 Dining & Entertainment.
