After taking the reins of the University of Iowa men’s golf program in 2007, head coach Mark Hankins has established the Hawkeye program at the national level, building a strong tradition and high standard in Iowa City. Iowa has advanced to NCAA Regionals the past four seasons, and has advanced to the NCAA Championship Finals three of the past four seasons. With a talented returning lineup, the Hawkeyes will be looking to add to that tradition and legacy in the 2012-13 season. “We want to be fi rst class in every way, and if we do that, I think we can accomplish the goals and meet the standards that this program has come to expect,” Hankins said. “Each year is new and different and my goal is to reach our individual potentials, which will dictate the level of our overall team success.” Iowa returns four letterwinners from last year’s team that fi nished 22nd at the NCAA Championships at The Riviera Country Club. Hankins will have two full-time players from last season to rely on, an honorable mention All-American and a group of inexperienced, yet talented golfers. The Hawkeyes graduated half of their roster last season, and Hankins will be looking to replace some excellent seniors from last year’s lineup. Two of the best players in program history graduated last season (Chris Brant, Barrett Kelpin), leaving big shoes to fi ll. Kelpin had the second best stroke average in program history last season (72.04), while Brant had the ninth best (73.29). Both were All-Big Ten selections. “It’s never easy to replace three full-time players like Brad (George), Barrett and Chris,” Hankins said. “All we can do is try to prepare the best we can. We have some young, talented guys. In golf, it’s more about being consistent across the entire lineup.” The Hawkeyes will count on junior Steven Ihm and sophomore Ian Vandersee to be the anchors of the lineup. Both played in all fi ve fall tournaments and all six spring events last season. With one additional year of maturity and growth, Ihm and Vandersee look to the season with high hopes. Ihm will be the returning low stroke average player on the team. The Peosta, Iowa, native averaged 73.8 strokes per round last season, earning second team All-Big Ten honors. Ihm led the Hawkeyes at the Rod Myers Invitational (second place), U.S. Col-legiate Championship (eight) and the LSU National Invitational (fi fth). Ihm transferred to Iowa last season after leading Indian Hills to a Junior College national championship. “Steven made a huge impact last year coming straight from being a JUCO national champion to being a full-time starter in our lineup,” Hankins said. “He’s been steady and consistent throughout the entire year, and that’s what we’re looking from him this season.” Vandersee earned a spot in the starting lineup for the fi rst fall tournament last season, and he never relinquished that spot. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native had a 74.9 stroke average last season, and his fi nal round 66 at the NCAA Regional helped advance Iowa to the NCAA Championships. “Ian played his best golf at the end of last year, which is encouraging,” Hankins said. ‘He’s had a strong summer, and he has gained confi dence in many ways. He will be a source of leadership on our team.” Sophomore Joseph Winslow made his mark in the fi nal tournament of the season last year, tying for 13th at the NCAA Championships. Winslow fi red a 215 (+2) en route to earning honorable mention All-America honors. Winslow played in fi ve tournaments in the spring, securing a 75.13 stroke average. The Overland Park, Kan., native is the sixth All-American in program history. “Joseph is a confi dent guy and a very positive person,” Hankins. “His goal is to establish himself as a top collegiate player and is already a tone-setter on this team regarding his attitude.” Sophomore Brian Bullington will also be a source of experience for the team after com-peting at the Rod Myers Invitational in the fall, and at the Big Ten Match Play and Cal-laway Collegiate Match Play in the spring. The Frankfort, Ill., native had a 76.3 stroke average last season. “He played some solid golf and gained good experience last season,” Hankins said. “Competing in strong tournaments this summer, including the U.S. Amateur, has created confi dence in his ability. We’re looking for continued success from Brian this season.” I owa will also be returning junior Ryan Marks. The Warrensburg, Mo., native competed at the Hawkeye - Great River Entertainment Invitational last season, carding a 224 (+8). The Hawkeyes also have a trio of freshmen that will be in the mix. Voramate Aussaras-sakorn, Landon Kowalski and Nate Yankovich will all have the opportunity to contribute to the starting lineup.

Aussarassakorn, from Bangkok, Thailand, was the 65th ranked recruit of the 2012 class by AJGA’s Polo Golf Rankings. Aussarassakorn earned four top-10 fi nishes out of fi ve ASGA events during in the summer of 2011, and competed for the Thailand National Team last summer. Kowalski is a freshman hailing from Buffalo Grove, Ill. He holds his high school’s record for lowest season average and lowest round, and was an AJGA Midwest Junior Players champion in 2011. Yankovich, from Blacklick, Ohio, was the 137th ranked recruit out of the 2012 class. He won the 2012 Ohio Junior Championships, fi ring rounds of 70 and 68 to win by four strokes. Yankovich also placed runner-up at the Central District Amateur this summer. “We’re excited about the guys we have coming into the program,” Hankins said. “They’re all talented players that are capable of stepping up, contributing and playing in tournaments this fall, and we’re eager to see what these guys can accomplish.” The Hawkeyes will play the exact same fall schedule as the one they had last year. Iowa’s 2011 fall schedule was ranked 15th toughest in the nation. Iowa will start the season Sept. 9, playing in its sixth Golden Gopher Invitational. The two-day tournament will be held at the Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn., and will feature 15 teams from 11 conferences. One week later, the Hawkeyes will host the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. Spirit Hollow was ranked the No. 1 golf course in the state of Iowa in 2012. The Challenge will feature 15 teams from 15 different conferences and has become one of the elite Division I college golf tournaments in the country. Iowa will be at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke from Oct. 13-14, before fac-ing the toughest test of the fall season. The Hawkeyes will return to the U.S. Collegiate Championship Oct. 19-21 at the Golf Club of Georgia in Atlanta. The U.S. Collegiate Championship was ranked the second toughest invitational last fall season. The Hawk-eyes close out the fall season at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas, from Oct. 29-30. “Last year’s schedule was challenging and set us up for a great spring season,” Hankins said. “This year, we will look to improve in certain tournaments and continue to compete against the best around the country. It’s a schedule we will be familiar with and that will help to prepare each individual on our team for personal success.” Iowa hosts the Black and Gold Alumni Match in Florida on Feb. 2, and will begin the spring season six days later with the Big Ten Match Play Championships in Bradenton, Fla. The Hawkeyes will look to defend its title at the Big Four Championships in Scotts-dale, Ariz., on Feb. 16 against the state’s three other NCAA Division I golf programs. The spring schedule will be highlighted by the 20th annual Hawkeye - Great River Entertainment Invitational, hosted at Finkbine in Iowa City. The invitational is scheduled for April 13 and 14th. The Hawkeyes will then travel to the Boilermaker Invitational at the Pete Dye designed Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. This year’s Big Ten Championships will be held at French Lick, Ind., at the French Lick Resort from April 26-28. The NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 16-18, and the NCAA Championships run from May 28 through June 2 in Atlanta, Georgia. “There’s a lot of strong competition in front of us, and I’m excited to see how we handle that,” Hankins said. “Our top goal is always to qualify for NCAA Regionals, Finals and place high in the Big Ten. It takes consistent work, discipline and trust in each other to reach these individual and team goals. Work that we are willing to put in.” Hankins will be assisted by former Hawkeye golfer Dan Holterhaus, who returns for his second season as assistant coach. With two upperclassmen, compared to six underclassmen, on the roster, the Hawk-eyes will face a demanding schedule with a more inexperienced team compared to re-cent years. Yet, the Hawkeyes have talent up and down the roster, and a core of proven players anchoring the lineup. With another chance to add to Iowa’s growing reputation, the Hawkeyes approach the 2012-13 season with excitement. “There is no magic to college golf, we need to out-prepare our opponents and work smartly to reach our potential,” Hankins said. “As we continue to grow, we will relay on our depth and pointed preparation to keep us on track for the entire season and beyond.”

The 2010 Hawkeyes fi nished the season ranked 36th in the nation and earned their best Big Ten fi nish (second) since 1992. Additionally, the Hawkeyes picked up their second tournament title in as many sea-sons with a win at the 2010 TaylorMade-adidas Hawkeye Invitational. Iowa jumped from 155th to 54th during the season as it picked up its fi rst tournament title since 2004 by winning the 2008 Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, NC. Furthermore, Hankins coached the Black and Gold to a fi fth place fi nish at the 2009 Southeast Regionals and a 17th place fi nish at the NCAA Championships in Toledo, OH; marking the fi rst time the Hawkeyes have qualifi ed for the championships since 1995.

The E.J. Liechty Scholarship, for men’s intercollegiate athletics, was established in 1995 by Ailene Liechty in memory of her husband, E.J. “Jack” Liechty. Since 1997, the annual scholarship has been awarded to a deserving student-athlete who is a member of the Iowa golf team. Jack Liechty was a devoted supporter of the University of Iowa, especially in the areas of athletics and arts. He was known for his humor and his willingness to lend a helping hand. Jack was a newspaperman all his life, entering the business in 1930 as the Iowa City circulation manager for the Des Moines Register. He joined the Iowa City Press-Citizen in 1934 as circulation manager, and went on to become president and

publisher from 1962-1966. He was named president of Speidel Newspapers, Inc., the parent company of the Press-Citizen, in 1966. Jack retired in 1972, although he continued to serve on the executive committee until 1977, when Speidel merged with Gannett Co., Inc., the nation’s largest newspaper company. Over the years, Jack contributed to many projects across the University of Iowa campus, and in 1983 he received the Distinguished Friend Award from the UI Alumni Association. Jack died in 1994 at the age of 85. His son, John Liechty, was a second team All-American in 1958 and three-time golf letter winner for head coaches Bucky O’Connor and Chuck Zwiener. Chuck Zwiener Endowed Scholarship

Chuck Zwiener served as men’s golf coach at the University of Iowa from 1958 through 1989, coaching the Hawkeyes for 32 years. In his honor, family and friends established the Chuck Zwiener Scholarship in 1992, to be awarded each year to an outstanding member of the Iowa golf team. Upon taking over the Iowa program in 1958, Zwiener immediately led his fi rst three Hawkeye teams into NCAA postseason action. During his tenure, Zwiener placed six players on the PGA tour, one of which went on to become a two-time PGA club winner of the year. Sixteen of Zwiener’s former players are now head PGA professionals at some of the fi nest golf courses in

the state of Iowa. He also led the Hawkeyes to 10 fi rst division fi nishes in the Big Ten and eight Hawkeyes earned All-Big Ten honors. For further information, or to make a gift to the Zwiener Scholarship Fund, contact the UI Foundation, 500 Alumni Center, Iowa City, IA 52242.

Bucky O’Connor Endowed Scholarship

The Bucky O’Connor Endowed Scholarship fund now endows both a basketball and golf scholarship at the University of Iowa. Since 1994, the scholarship provides a full ride, tuition, room, board and books for a member of the Iowa golf team. O’Connor coached the Iowa golf team from 1949-56, and had a dual meet record of 39-30-4. His 1954 team placed second in the Big Ten tournament, and 11th in the NCAA meet. Also serving as Iowa’s basketball coach from 1951-58, O’Connor directed his teams to a 108-54 record, including two Big Ten championships and two NCAA Final Four appearances. O’Connor joined the Hawkeye staff in 1948 and coached the Hawkeyes until he was killed in an automobile accident in April, 1958.

James Hoak Men’s Golf Scholarship Fund

The James M. Hoak Scholarship is designated for deserving student-athletes on the UI men’s golf team. Hoak is a 1940 graduate from the University of Iowa, former Des Moines businessman and currently resides in North Palm Beach, FL. Long-time friend, Clark A. Johnson and Hoak’s three sons, David A. Hoak (a 1968 UI business graduate), Jon S. Hoak and James M. Hoak Jr. made gift commitments to the UI Foundation to establish an endowed athletics scholarship fund in Hoak’s name. While at Iowa, James M. Hoak lettered in golf and roomed with UI football legend Nile Kinnick. Hoak attended the M.B.A. program at Harvard University in the early 1940’s and after service in the Navy during World War II, joined the family business, the Wheeler Lumber Company, headquartered in Des Moines. He served as

the fi rm’s president for more than 20 years before retiring in 1985. Hoak and his wife, Jane, a 1941 UI graduate, have been UI supporters and volunteers for many years, and are members of the Presidents Club, which recognizes the UI’s most generous contributors. “Jim graduated from the university nearly 68 years ago, and I left campus in 1953, but neither of us has ever lost his enthusiasm for the university, and for its mission of equipping students with the tools to succeed in life after college,” said Johnson. “Jim’s been so important to the university over the years, and I wanted to do something to honor his love for the U of I while he and his family could enjoy and participate in that recognition.” “The James Hoak Scholarship represents a real win-win for the UI athletics program,” UI Athletics Director Gary Barta said. “The student-athletes who earn the Hoak Scholarship will have the distinction of knowing that their awards carry the name of one of our most loyal and generous graduates -- someone who knew Nile personally, and who represents the proud history and integrity of the UI athletics program.”

WHY IOWA?

IOWA MEN’S GOLF

“We have a great home golf course in Finkbine that can chal-lenge us every day. Iowa is also a top school academically

which will help us after college. The people at Iowa and con-nections that you can make while here will last a lifetime.”

Dan Holterhaus - 2008 Iowa Alum

Current Assistant Coach

“I am very encouraged to hear about the work Mark Hankins is doing at the University of Iowa. He is very excited and interest-ed in making the Iowa golf program the best it can be. He was able to bring Big Ten titles to Michigan State and I am confi dent

he can do the same for Iowa.”

Lonnie Nielson - 1978 Iowa Alum

PGA and Champions Tour

“The best thing I ever did was choose to attend the University of Iowa. We had a great golf program and traveled all over

the country. The University of Iowa is a great school and Iowa City is a great college town. Overall, it is a great place to go to

school.”

Sean McCarty - 1995 Iowa Alum and 1995 All-American

Director of Golf - Brown Deer Golf Club

“I think Coach Hankins has a core group of kids who are really trying to accomplish something with their golf games. He won’t accept any mediocrity and he’s really after a national champion-ship. It would be incredible to do that in the Midwest and I think

that’s really his ultimate goal; he wants to be the best in the country.”

Gary Updedgraff -- 1978 Iowa Alum

“It’s a great time to be a Hawkeye golfer. The recruiting has really picked up and these guys can play. We’re starting to get

guys from all over the place and Mark (Hankins) has done a phenomenal job. There are great facilities for a great program

and these guys are ready to go.”

Jason Price -- 1995-2000

“The years I was here were great. You get to travel all over the country and I still have life-long friends I still keep in touch with

today, not only from Iowa but from other schools. It really paves the way, not only for golf but for business opportunities. It

teaches you how to deal with other people and all sorts of differ-ent lifestyles. It really carries over to all different walks of life.”

Bo Anderson --1999-2003

“I’ve been in the golf business for almost 30 years now, as a head professional and director of golf in the Des Moines metro area and I’d have to say that the recognition of being an Iowa

alum and on the golf team was such a positive infl uence in all of that. You meet people and make connections which are always

positive as well.”

Ross E. deBuhr -- 1977 Iowa Alum

“Being a member of the Iowa golf team, competing in the Big Ten and graduating from the University of Iowa has been abso-lutely critical to my success at all levels. It has been absolutely key in my development of a successful law practice. Friends

and acquaintances that I developed at the U of I have followed me throughout my entire professional career.”

HAWKEYE ALUMNI

IOWA MEN’S GOLFThe following are brief bios on several Hawkeye greats:

- Guy Boros - Boros turned professional in 1986. He has played in 246 PGA Tour events in his career, recording 31 top-25 fi nish-es. Boros is the son of golf hall-of-fam-er and two-time U.S. Open Champion Julius Boros, and in 1996 became the fi rst son of a PGA Tour winner to win an individual Tour title in 45 years with

the Greater Vancouver Open Championship. Boros has recorded two top-25 fi nishes since 2009, bringing his career PGA earnings above $1.6 million. In 1995, Boros had his best season, earning $303,654 after four top-10 fi nishes. Boros earned a place on the PGA Tour in 1993, following four years on the Canadian Tour, two years on the Aus-tralasian Tour and one year on the NIKE Tour. Most recently, Boros shot nine-under par to fi nish tied for 55th at the Viking Classic in Madi-son, Miss. He currently ranks T29th in Putting Rating on the PGA Tour. Boros has also played in 231 events on the Nationwide Tour, netting $575,244 in his career.

- Sean McCarty - McCarty helped Iowa win the Big Ten Conference title and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1992. Sean was an All-American in 1995 along with the likes of Stewart Cink and Tiger Woods. He also competed in the 2003 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields.

McCarty was the Iowa Section PGA Player of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and is currently second in the 2011 chase. McCarty is now the head golf professional at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville, IA.

- Jack Rule - In the late 1950’s and the early 1960’s Jack Rule had an incredible impact on Iowa golf. Jack, from Waterloo, won back-to-back Iowa Ama-teur titles in 1958 and 1959 just before the Amateur changed to a stroke play event in 1960. Jack also won the Waterloo Open Amateur Titles in 1958 and 1959. Jack continued his strong play into the next two years as he won titles at the Iowa Masters in 1960 and the Northwest Ama-teur in 1961. In his career, Jack won a total of fi ve Iowa Major Titles. A highlight of Jack Rule’s career was at the 1956 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, where Rule ran into a a guy named Jack Nicklaus in the semifi nals. Rule was able to pull out the victory 1 up. He eventually lost in the fi nals but very few individuals can say that they toppled the “Bear”. Besides a successful run at the Amateur level Jack tried his luck as a professional. “It’s a great experience for us. Mark Hankins has this program going in the

right direction. Being able to be among friends and play some golf is invalu-

able to the guys who have graduated and are trying to remember what it was

like when we played.”

Jason Price – 2000 Iowa Alum

“It’s great for any program that can get something like this going. I think

there’s a lot of guys that wouldn’t think twice about coming back next year.

They’ll want to come back to see all their old teammates, play a great golf

course and see a good football game. It’s a pretty good draw for former alums

to get back here.”

Adam Kaufman - Former Finkbine Head Professional

“This event is awesome because it gets harder and harder to get together the

older you get. This event makes it easy to come back as a group. You really

are a family, so hats off to Mark and everything he’s done.”

Bo Anderson – 2003 Iowa Alum

“It’s a pretty neat deal they’re putting together for us. Something like this is

a great way to get together with all the other guys we used to play with and

HAWKEYE ADMINISTRATION

IOWA MEN’S GOLFGary BartaDirector of Athletics

Now in his seventh year as director of athletics at the

University of Iowa and his 26th year in athletic administration,

Gary Barta manages an athletics program that continues to

gain momentum in two key areas -- on the playing fi eld and

in the classroom -- while enhancing the infrastructure that will

serve as the foundation for future successes.

Academically, the UI’s federal graduation rate of

74 percent (for student-athletes who enrolled in 2004-05)

ties the best ever posted by UI athletics. That mark was

a 13-point increase over the previous year and was nine

points above the national average; UI student-athletes will

establish another record when the latest fi gures are released

in October. Last fall, the NCAA confi rmed that all 24 of Iowa’s teams exceeded the Academic Progress

Rate (APR) benchmark for the fourth straight year.

In fi gures released last fall, Iowa’s score of 86 percent in the NCAA’s “Graduation Success Rate”

or GSR, also matched a school record. Five different women’s teams at the UI posted perfect 100 GSR

scores. Iowa’s GSR in football (83), men’s (73) and women’s (100) basketball all ranked above the national

average for their respective sports.

Athletically, Hawkeye teams enjoyed another outstanding year in 2011-12. A signifi cant number of

Iowa’s 24 programs reached postseason play. The Iowa football team reached bowl eligibility for the 11th

straight season and competing in a bowl game for the fourth straight year and 10th time in the last 11

seasons. The women’s basketball program participated in the NCAA Tournament for a fi fth straight season

and men’s basketball returned to postseason competition under second-year coach Fran McCaffery,

recording an 84-75 win over Dayton in front of 13,190 re-energized fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeye wrestling program, led by national champion Matt McDonough, made another run at a

national title before placing third. The men’s golf team placed 22nd nationally in its third appearance in the

NCAA Championships in the last four seasons. Additionally, the UI men’s track and fi eld placed 23rd in the

nation and the UI’s men’s swimming and diving program placed 26th at its national championship.

Iowa’s fi eld hockey team advanced to the NCAA Tournament and the Hawkeye softball team placed

second in the Big Ten. Between the men’s and women’s track and fi eld teams, 34 student-athletes

competed at the NCAA Championships and 14 members of the UI men’s and women’s swimming and

diving teams qualifi ed for the Olympic Trials.

And, while the UI athletics department continues to earn high marks in integrity, academic excellence,

and athletic performances. Barta also continues to oversee critical improvements and additions to the

facilities used by the UI’s talented student-athletes while maintaining a balanced and ever-growing

operations budget that continues to be self-sustaining.

In addition to the competitive success the Hawkeyes recorded in 2011-12, the UI once again

experienced tremendous success at the turnstiles. Iowa has sold every seat in historic Kinnick Stadium in

each of the past two seasons, ranking 21st in national attendance both years. The UI will enter the 2012

home football season with all seven home games sold out once again and boasts waiting lists for not only

season tickets, but also the premium seating options available inside the Paul W. Brechler Press Box.

Attendance at home games of the UI’s men’s basketball team has climbed more than 30 percent the

last two seasons. Iowa’s attendance of 13,190 for a fi rst round NIT game in Carver-Hawkeye Arena ranked

as the highest attended game of the 2012 tournament.

The UI wrestling team set another national attendance record by averaging 9,014 fans per home

meet in 2011-12, leading the nation in attendance for the sixth straight year. The economic impact of the

2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials, hosted by the UI in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, exceeded $5 million,

according to survey results released by the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Attendance at home games of the UI’s women’s basketball games also remained strong as the

program once again ranked among national leaders in 2011-12. The UI also registered increases in

attendance at home volleyball, soccer, fi eld hockey, women’s gymnastics, men’s gymnastics, softball and

baseball events.

Since 2006, the Hawkeyes have invested more than $150 million in new and renovated athletic

facilities. Upgrades include the restoration of historic Kinnick Stadium and Carver-Hawkeye Arena, as well

as a new state-of-the-art aquatics center, a boathouse facility for the UI rowing program and an indoor and

outdoor tennis complex. Another $60 million worth of improvements are underway in the form of the two

phase football training center project and an indoor golf performance facility.

In late summer 2011, the UI completed a $47 million revitalization of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. That

project included the construction of a practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, a

10,000-square-foot strength training and cardiovascular center, and an expansion to the Dan Gable

Wrestling Complex, in addition to new locker room and support facilities for men’s and women’s basketball,

wrestling and volleyball programs, and offi ce space for the majority of Iowa administrative and coaching

staffs.

The Carver project included the installation of a statue of Gable at the facility’s main entrance. That

project was completed in time for the thousands of fans of the sport of wrestling to enjoy while attending the

2012 USA Wrestling Olympic Team Trials.

Phase I of a two-phase project for the UI football program was completed in August, 2012. Phase

I includes the new indoor practice facility for Coach Kirk Ferentz’ program that has competed on 10 bowl

games over the past 11 seasons. Phase II includes construction of the new Iowa Football Operations

Center, which will include new team locker rooms, team meeting rooms, athletic medical training space,

video operations, and coaches offi ces and meeting rooms. Funded entirely through private support and

revenue generated by the UI Athletics Department, the project is an important next phase of the master

facilities plan for Hawkeye football. It will be constructed adjacent to the Ron and Margaret Kenyon

Outdoor Practice Facility, immediately west of Kinnick Stadium and will be connected to the new indoor

practice facility.

The 2010-11 season marked the fi rst for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in

the UI’s $69 million Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Hawkeyes hosted the 2012 Big Ten

Championships and the UI men’s squad responded by earning its highest Big Ten fi nish in 15 seasons.

Another of the latest additions to the facilities available to the UI’s student-athletes is the Varsity Golf

Complex practice facility for the men’s and women’s golf programs. Located at the southern edge of the

UI’s award-winning Finkbine Golf Course, the facility is expected to be completed for use this winter. It

will provide the Hawkeyes a state-of-the-art facility that offers the opportunity for year-round training and

practice.

Barta’s involvement in the UI campus community extends beyond intercollegiate athletics. He is a

member of the President’s Cabinet, comprised of vice presidents and other campus leaders, that provide

counsel to UI President Sally Mason. That group was instrumental in the UI’s response to record-setting

fl ooding that besieged the campus and the Iowa City and Coralville community in June 2008.

Barta also represents the UI and the Hawkeyes at the conference and national level. During his

fi rst six years at the UI, he has participated in the creation and implementation of the Big Ten Network, the

expansion of the Big Ten Conference and realignment of athletics conferences nationally, and the Big Ten’s

postseason bowl game agreements that were successfully implemented in 2010.

Nationally, Barta remains active in the Division IA Athletics Directors Association, the National

Association of College Directors of Athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA Football Committee Board

of Directors.

Barta often suggests to his staff that “Hope is not a strategy,” which is why he is currently overseeing a

comprehensive review of the strategic plan for the UI Athletics Department and has worked with the UI’s

leadership on a long-term fi nancial plan.

Another favorite saying of his is, “Vision without resources is irrelevant.” Over the course of his career

he has been directly involved in raising hundreds of millions of dollars in support of intercollegiate athletics.

This has remained a primary focus during his tenure at Iowa, where private support for the Hawkeyes

continues to fl ourish despite a challenging economy.

Under Barta’s leadership –¬ and thanks to a talented athletics development staff – the UI has seen

year-over-year improvement in annual giving in spite of the diffi cult economic environment. In addition,

under Barta’s direction, the UI generated more than $20 million of philanthropic and corporate sponsorship

support for the revitalization of Carver-Hawkeye Arena and has already surpassed that level of support for

the current football projects.

The UI also generated the $2 million in private support necessary to fully fund the Hawkeyes’ new

practice facility for its men’s and women’s golf programs.

As the director of athletics at the University of Wyoming for three years, seven different UW coaches

were named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. He also spearheaded a fund-raising effort that

netted the Cowboy athletics program $11 million in private support and $11 million in matching state fund.

As the senior associate athletics director at the University of Washington, he directed the “Campaign

for the Student-Athlete,” was a participant in the design, construction and/or renovation of several UW

athletics facilities, including Bank of America Arena and the Dempsey Indoor Practice Facility. In addition

the amount of annual private support received by UW, Barta also managed the department’s external

relations division, a task that included corporate sponsorship and radio contracts.

His responsibilities at Washington expanded over time to include hiring of coaching and administrative

staff, and the day-to-day oversight of several Huskie sport teams.

The roots of his development experience extend to his fi rst two positions: director of athletics

development and external relations at the University of Northern Iowa and director of development at his

alma mater, North Dakota State University.

Barta earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mass communication and broadcast journalism from

NDSU in 1987. He was an option quarterback for Bison football squads that won the Division II NCAA

National Championship in 1983, 1985 and 1986.

Barta, and his wife, Connie, have a son, Luke (14) and a daughter, Madison (12). He was born Sept.

4, 1963, in Minneapolis.

IOWA MEN’S GOLF

Hawkeyes Continue to Build for Success

The UI Department of Athletics is under the direction of Gary Barta and is regarded as one of the top intercollegiate programs in the nation. Once again, the Hawkeyes enjoyed success both athletically and academically in 2011-12

Academically, the UI’s federal graduation rate of 74 percent (for student-athletes who enrolled in 2004-05) ties the best ever posted by UI athletics. That mark was a 13-point increase over the previous year and was nine points above the national average; UI student-athletes will establish another record when the latest fi gures are released in October. Last fall, the NCAA confi rmed that all 24 of Iowa’s teams exceeded the Academic Progress Rate (APR) benchmark for the fourth straight year.

Athletically, Hawkeye teams enjoyed another outstanding year in 2011-12. A signifi cant number of Iowa’s 24 programs reached postseason play. The Iowa football team reached bowl eligibility for the 11th straight season and competed in a bowl game for the fourth straight year and 10th time in the last 11 seasons. The women’s basketball program participated in the NCAA Tournament for a fi fth straight season and men’s basketball returned to postseason competition under second-year coach Fran McCaffery.

In late summer 2011, the UI completed a $47 million revitalization of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. That project included the construction of a practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, a 10,000-square-foot strength training and cardiovascular center, and an expansion to the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex, in addition to new locker room and support facilities for men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and volleyball programs, and offi ce space for the majority of Iowa administrative and coaching staffs.

Phase I of a two-phase project for the UI football program was completed in August, 2012. Phase I includes the new indoor practice facility for Coach Kirk Ferentz’ program that has competed on 10 bowl games over the past 11 seasons. Phase II includes construction of the new Iowa Football Operations Center, which will include new team locker rooms, team meeting rooms, athletic medical training space, video operations, and coaches offi ces and meeting rooms. Funded entirely through private support and revenue generated by the UI Athletics Department, the project is an important next phase of the master facilities plan for Hawkeye football.

Iowa Wrestling

Iowa Football Iowa football continued its stellar play, fi nishing in the upper division of the Big Ten for the 10th time in the last 11 years. The Hawkeyes reached bowl eligibility for the 11th straight season and competed in the postseason for the fourth straight year.

The Hawkeye wrestling team -- the national attendance leader in each of the last six seasons -- continued its dominance on the mat, fi nishing third at the NCAA Championships. Six Hawkeyes earned All-America accolades in 2012, including two-time national champion Matt McDonough. Iowa has claimed 23 national championships and 34 Big Ten titles in its 102-year history.

Iowa Women’s Basketball The women’s basketball team won its fi nal eight games of the regular season to fi nish tied for second in the Big Ten and earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Lisa Bluder has now led Iowa to fi ve-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

Iowa Men’s Track & Field

The men’s track and fi eld team recorded a pair of top 25 fi nishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The Hawkeyes crowned four Big Ten champions and nine All-Americans, including Erik Sowinski, who placed second in the 800 meters at the NCAA Championships.

Iowa Men’s Golf

Head coach Mark Hankins led the Hawkeyes to their third NCAA Championships appearance in the last four years. Iowa collected another top-25 national fi nish and multiple individuals earned honors throughout the season.

Second-year head coach Fran McCaffery led the Hawkeyes to 18 wins and an NIT bid a year ago. Iowa improved by seven wins from 2011 to 2012, as McCaffery continued to demonstrate his ability to rebuild programs and reenergize the fan base -- Iowa’ s attendance increased for the second straight year and ranked No. 31 nationally.

The Iowa men’s swimming and diving team posted its best fi nish in 17 years, placing fi fth in the Big Ten and 26th at the NCAA Championships. The Hawkeye won a pair of Big Ten relay titles and fi ve student-athletes went on to garner honorable mention All-America accolades. On the women’s team, freshman Becky Stoughton became the fi rst UI swimmer to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, and she was the fi rst Hawkeye women’s swimmer to earn All-America honors since 2005.

ATHLETIC STUDENT SERVICES

IOWA MEN’S GOLFSince its inception in 1979, Athletics Student Ser-vices has evolved from a two-person, academic support service to a broad-based, nationally prominent student support operation. Its purpose is to offer academic and personal support ser-vices that will assist student-athletes in making timely progress toward their degrees while pre-paring to become tomorrow’s leaders. Athletics Student Services focuses on four important ar-eas – academic counseling and monitoring, edu-cational and support programs, retention pro-grams and compliance education and services – when working with student-athletes. Following are descriptions of some of the programs, ser-vices and opportunities available in those areas.

Gerdin Athletics Learning CenterThe $4.6 million Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center opened in August of 2003 and gives all Iowa student-athletes a state of the art facility to support their educational goals. The Athletics Learning Center is a 20,000 square foot facility which provides a computer lab, study lounges, seminar and meeting places for all Hawkeye student-athletes. The Learn-ing Center features an auditorium that converts into two classrooms, separate study rooms for under and upper-class student-athletes with 28 study carrels, a computer lab, tutorial rooms, the book loan repository, offi ces for Iowa’s Student Services staff and a display area to recognize the academic and athletic accomplishments of Iowa’s student-athletes.

Academic Counseling & MonitoringAthletics coordinators work closely with student-athletes and their university-assigned advisors from the time they arrive on campus until the time they leave the university. Along with fo-cusing on academic planning matters such as goal-setting, plans of study, choosing majors and degree requirements, athletics coordinators also help student-athletes understand NCAA, Big Ten and university academic policies. They also so-licit feedback from instructors on academic prog-ress made by student-athletes.

Compliance Education and Services

Athletics Student Services administers a comprehensive compliance program to ensure that all staff and student-athletes act in accordance with NCAA, Big Ten Conference and University of Iowa regu-lations. Staff members oversee and assist with the recruiting of prospective student-athletes. They monitor the continuing eligibility of student-athletes. They oversee and administer student-athlete fi nancial aid. They conduct rules education programs for coaches, staff, student-athletes and boost-ers. They monitor staff and student-athlete behavior to ensure conformity with the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, University of Iowa and Athletic Department policies and rules.

Career Guidance & DevelopmentPlanning a meaningful career and a fulfi lling life is an ongoing process of expanding and narrowing choices, beginning when student-athletes arrive on campus and continuing throughout their college ca-reer and lifetime. The professional staff works with other career development professionals on campus to offer individual consultation, career development seminars, workshops, referrals to other campus offi ces and special events like the Senior Recognition Banquet for graduating student-athletes.

TutoringTutoring is available free of charge to all student-athletes. Tutors, who are graduate and professional students, current and former teachers, help with course content as well as study strategies and are available in virtually all general education program subjects.

The $4.6 million Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center opened in August of 2003 and gives all Iowa student-athletes a state of the art facility to sup-port their educational goals.

Located near the Hillcrest, Slater, Quadrangle and Rienow residence halls, the Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center is easily accessible to Hawkeye student-athletes. Some of the facility’s features include a large com-puter lab, areas for group and independent study, and meet-ing rooms.

RetentionThrough the retention program student-athletes, who may need tailored ac-ademic assistance and structure, are identifi ed and receive individualized learning plans to help them succeed. Such plans may include daily and weekly planning sessions with athletics coordinators and retention staff, tutoring, study groups, mainstreaming into on-campus services like the writing center, math labs and services for students with learning disabilities.

Minority Enrichment ProgramThis program offers a culturally supportive environment in which minority student-athletes develop friendships and a support network in the univer-sity. A core focus group of students and staff coordinate programs such as guest speakers, holiday celebrations, community service activities with the local neighborhood centers, events with Cultural Centers and networking with minority faculty, staff, professional and business leaders.

Educational ProgramsA full menu of educational programs are offered to student-athletes to en-sure their academic success and personal development as they grow from Today’s Hawkeyes to Tomorrow’s Leaders. Through collaboration with oth-er University of Iowa student services offi ces, and in partnership with the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, programs address such quality of life issues as alcohol safety, healthy lifestyles, tolerance and respect, career development, professional conduct and leadership development.

Transition SeminarAll new student-athletes attend an eight-week transition seminar during the fall semester that is geared toward helping them make the transition from high school to college successfully. Seminar topics include time manage-ment skills, learning and study strategies, the culture and rules of the uni-versity and Division I Big Ten intercollegiate athletics, and personal lead-ership and life skills concerning alcohol safety, healthy relationships and intimacy, diversity and inclusion, tolerance, values and character.

Leadership Development through Iowa SAACThrough the Iowa SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee), student-athlete representatives selected by their coaches and teammates repre-sent the interests and concerns of their teams to athletics administrators. They meet regularly to plan community service, personal development, career education and social programs advised and supported by Athlet-ics Student Services staff. They are consulted about emerging department policies and NCAA proposed legislation. SAAC representatives learn about and participate in the athletics governance structure by serving on depart-ment advisory committees.

SPORTS MEDICINE

IOWA MEN’S GOLFContinuing to set the standard in athletic training and Sports Medicine Ser-vice, The University of Iowa provides the student-athlete with exemplary medical care. UI Sports Medicine is a multidisciplinary healthcare team housed within the UI Sports Medicine Center, as part of University Hos-pitals & Clinics (UIHC), striving to provide exemplary everyday care for all student-athletes. The team consists of Athletic Training, Orthopedics, Pri-mary Care, Physician Assistants, Radiology, Physical Therapy, and Nurs-ing. In addition, Athletic Training Services connect student-athletes to UIHC resources and specialty areas. Iowa’s staff of 12 full-time licensed athletic trainers and six graduate assistant licensed athletic trainers provide health care services within four athletic training rooms and other ancillary facilities, involving injury rehabilitation and prevention programs among other health care services. When injuries and illness occur Iowa’s athletic trainers pro-vide treatment and rehabilitation programs to facilitate appropriate return to participation. Services from the UIHC, among the world’s largest university-owned teaching hospitals, support the efforts of the athletic trainers and other spe-cialty sports medicine staff. Located next to Kinnick Stadium, the hospital offers a cutting-edge environment where staff physicians, sports medicine fellows, sports physical therapists, and athletic trainers care for student-ath-letes and produce successful outcomes. Dedicated research and education result in outstanding care. In October 2009, the Institute for Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (IOSMR) opened to further enhance the care for student athletes. This new facility houses the UI Sports Medicine Center. Athletic trainers form a team with orthopaedic and primary care physi-cians for every Hawkeye sport. Many of the physicians are fellowship trained in their specialty area and lecture locally, nationally, and around the world. In addition, each athlete has access to orthodontists, nutrition-ists, psychologists, and specialty physicians at the UIHC. Priority access to see physicians and other health care professionals provides expertise for comprehensive health care that returns the student-athlete to practice and competition promptly and safely.

UI Sports Medicine CenterThe UI Sports Medicine Center, part of the Institute for Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, is home to state-of-the-art clinical and rehabil-itation facilities. The 26,000-square-foot building includes 16 examination rooms and four treatment rooms. Almost 7,500 square feet is devoted to comprehensive rehabilitation ser-vices, including a hydrotherapy pool, custom orthotics, athletic shoe wear modifi cation and bracing, training aids and rehabilitation accessories. The proximity of surgical and medical clinics with rehabilitation facilities and comprehensive orthopaedic and prosthetic services underscores the center’s multidisciplinary approach to sports medicine and allows patients to have all their needs met under one roof.

The Carver-Hawkeye Athletic Training Room has excellent facili-ties to conduct evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation for the

student-athlete.

The Field House Athletic Training Room has excellent facilities to conduct evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation for the student-

athlete.

Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Athletic Training RoomThe Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Athletic Training facility is used by women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and fi eld hockey as an ancillary facility close to practice and competition fi elds. Within the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex is a functional athletic training private space with equipment to enhance treatment, rehabilitation, cardio-pulmonary, and strength performance. Equipment provided for the student-athletes includes: ellipticals, GameReady, treadmills, and bikes by Pre-Cor, strength equipment, and open space to conduct rehabilitation and preven-tion techniques. There are also traditional electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and moist heat treatment options.

SPORTS MEDICINE & STRENGTH TRAINING

IOWA MEN’S GOLFThe Hawkeye Strength Training ProgramThe University of Iowa Strength and Conditioning Department is committed to providing the ultimate training experience for each Hawkeye student-athlete. Our focus is the development of the complete student-athlete through the use of proven scientifi c methods for reducing the risk of injury, as well as maximizing each student-athletes’ athletic potential. Equally as important, our staff will foster a culture of relationship building in which we will seek to enhance the intangible character traits required for each Hawkeye to reach his or her championship potential on and off the playing stage.

The Recreation Building Athletic Training Room has excellent facili-ties to conduct evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation for the

student-athlete.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena Athletic Training RoomThe Carver-Hawkeye Arena athletic training room is a modern athletic train-ing facility used by men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and men’s and women’s golf. Physician examination, treatment and rehabilita-tive therapy areas function as a clinic site for specialized care. Traditional therapies include whirlpools, hot and cold units, rehabilitation space with weights, therapy balls, plyometrics platforms, balance devices, and assort-ed Pre-Cor bikes and elliptical. Other therapeutic equipment available for the treatment of student-athletes include ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction and external compression units.

Recreation Building Athletic Training RoomThe Recreation Building athletic training room is used by the Hawkeye baseball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and fi eld, and softball teams. It supports health care with modalities (moist hot packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, Hivamat, and TENS), Hydroworx polar and thermal plunge pools with therapy jets and massage hoses to aid in self administration of deep tissue massage, cardiovascular equipment (LeMond independent pedal bike with Power Cranks, the Keiser Functional Trainer, Pre-Cor Ellipticals and Adaptive Motion Trainer), and a private phy-sicians offi ce.

Beckwith Boathouse Athletic Training RoomThe Beckwith Boathouse athletic training room serves the Hawkeye wom-en’s rowing team. This space has moist heat, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound modalities. Modest rehabilitation and reconditioning equipment are also present for limited onsite rehabilitation.

Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Athletic Training RoomThe Campus Recreation and Wellness Center athletic training room serves the Hawkeye men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. This space has moist heat, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound modalities. Modest rehabilitation and reconditioning equipment are also present for limited on-site rehabilitation.

Strength & Conditioning PhilosophyThe philosophy of this program consists of two components. The fi rst is to continually develop a scientifi cally sound program that will maximize strength, power and explosiveness in order to allow the athlete to get the utmost out of their genetic potential, and to reduce the chance of injury. This will primarily be accomplished through the use of ground based free weight exercises and the progressive incorporation of functional movements and plyometrics. The second is to establish a culture which will develop the discipline, character and mental toughness within each student-athlete and team as a whole so that they are able to make sacrifi ces in their training, leave their comfort zone and develop a Championship ATTITUDE. This will encourage them to make the most out of every situation and opportunity given to them in athletics and academics, so that they might know what it is to be fully committed to something. When these two converge, they are not only able to reach their full potential; they become champions on and off the playing fi eld.

IOWA MEN’S GOLFAn Exceptional ChoiceSince 1847, The University of Iowa has distinguished itself as a leader among

public universities. Today its programs in health, business, engineering,

education, law, the arts, communications, and the sciences are known

worldwide for their excellence and innovation.

Outstanding Academic OpportunitiesIowa offers degrees in 11 colleges: Business, Dentistry, Education, Engineering,

Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health,

and the Graduate College. Undergraduates can choose from more than 100

areas of study.

A Fun Place to Call HomeIowa City is a classic university town where learning and creating truly matter.

The city blends the vibrant university campus and the natural beauty of the

Iowa River with nearby shopping, entertainment, and residential areas.

Commanding ResourcesThe university operates one of the largest research library systems in the

country. Iowa equips its classrooms and laboratories with the latest in

computer technology. Students benefi t from this technology-rich environment coupled with the high personal attention of university faculty and staff. Visit the university’s web site at www.uiowa.edu to learn about its multifaceted education, research and service programs.

More Than a Taste of the ArtsAlthough temporarily displaced from their buildings by a summer 2008 fl ood, Hancher Auditorium and the UI Museum of Art continue to offer performances, exhibits and special events in alternate venues. Premiere works of art are displayed in most university buildings and plazas throughout campus. Students may participate in theater, music, and dance groups.

Time and Space to PlayEvery year about 90 percent of Iowa’s students make use of the university’s recreational facilities. Each season offers a full schedule of intramural and club sports, ranging from rugby, tennis, and golf to volleyball, soccer, and swimming. Individual workouts are a part of many students’ daily routines. Students also make use of campus walking and running trails, bikeways, ski trails, golf courses, and canoe and sailboat rentals to relax and enjoy leisure time.

What Distinguishes an Iowa Education?Success. Iowa’s philosophy is that if students meet the entrance requirements, the university is going to do everything it can to help students to graduate. An Iowa degree spells success in the job market, giving students the skills to continue learning and growing throughout their careers.Excellence. The faculty is stellar. Students are amazed not only at how much they know but at how enthused they are about sharing that knowledge and getting students excited about their subject.

Comfortable class sizesAttending a large university does not necessarily mean having large class sizes. More than 30,000 students are enrolled at Iowa, but the UI has a student-to-faculty ratio of 15:1. Large lecture halls host a few of the most popular undergraduate courses, with several hundred students in attendance. However, most lectures are complemented by classroom discussions among smaller groups. Altogether, 92 percent of undergraduate classes have fewer than 50 students in them; 80 percent have fewer than 30 students. Less than 4 percent of undergraduate classes have more than 100 students in them.

Iowa City is a diverse, highly cosmopolitan community of 60,000 set in the natural scenic beauty of

Iowa’s rolling hills and woods along the tree-lined banks of the Iowa River. Iowa City has all the art

galleries, ethnic foods, historic architecture and vibrant atmosphere of a much larger city, but with the

compactness and friendly feeling of a small town.

As a place to live, Iowa City keeps winning awards and accolades. Named one of the 50 “Best

Places to Live and Play” by National Geographic Adventure, Iowa City is ranked second among small

metro areas for business and careers, and eighth among up and coming tech cities by Forbes. Money

ranks Iowa City as the third-best place in the nation to retire, while Fortune lists it as the 21st-best

“Place to Live and Launch”. Largely as a result of the UI’s pioneering leadership in creative writing,

Iowa City has been designated America’s fi rst UNESCO “City of Literature.” Economically, businesses such as Rockwell Collins, American College Testing and Procter & Gamble help keep the city booming. In Coralville, a branch offi ce of Geico Auto Insurance has provided many residents with employment opportunities. Culturally, Iowa City is alive with concerts, art exhibits, readings, plays and art events of all kinds. Located on the University of Iowa campus, Hancher Auditorium is a nationally-known performance center that brings in the best of Broadway, classical and jazz music, dance and other performances. The University of Iowa Theatre Arts department also produces a full schedule of plays each year, featuring the work of student performers and directors. So whether you enjoy the arts as a spectator or as an outlet for your own creativity, Iowa City has the opportunities. For more than 70 years emerging writers have come to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, fostering and celebrating American literature. Residents of Iowa City are not only economically and culturally enriched, they also take advantage of the numerous recreational facilities offered around town. The area’s more than 30 parks provide opportunities for year-round activities including boating, hiking, swimming, fi shing and skiing. The city’s greatest charm, however, remains the sincere friendliness of its citizens, the cosmopolitan atmosphere and the successful partnership built between the community and the university.

Old CapitolOne of the most recognizable sites in Iowa City is the gold dome of the Old Capitol which is situated in the heart of downtown. Built in 1840, it is Iowa City’s most historic building. The Old Capitol was the site of the fi rst governor inauguration as well as the fi rst six Iowa General Assemblies. It is also where the state’s Constitution was drafted. When the capital was moved to Des Moines in 1857, the Old Capitol was dedicated to The University of Iowa, becoming the fi rst building owned by the University.

Coralville LakeJust north of Iowa City is Coralville Lake, an outdoor recreational area that offers a variety of opportunities for the public. Coralville Lake offers picnic shelters, biking, hiking, fi shing, boating, swimming, hunting, camp-ing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, golf and disc golf.

City PlazaLocated downtown and in walking distance of many of the University’s dormitories is the City Plaza. It is a perfect place to sit outside and study or hang out with friends. During the fall, spring and summer months there are concerts and art festivals in the “Ped Mall”.

Coral Ridge MallThe Coral Ridge Mall is a 1.2-million-square-foot shopping center located just minutes from campus. The center combines a mix of over 120 specialty shops and strong anchor stores including Best Buy, Dillards, JC Penney, Sears, Target and Younkers. Coral Ridge also offers entertainment fea-tures such as an NHL-regulation-sized indoor ice arena, state-of-the-art 10-screen movie theatre and a large carousel along with a 1,000-seat food court with sit-down restaurants. Specialty stores include Abercrombie & Fitch, Barnes & Noble, Gap, Old Navy, Scheels All Sports and Pier 1 Imports.

HAWKEYE TRADITIONS

IOWA MEN’S GOLF

School Fight SongThe Iowa Fight Song was written in 1950 by Mason City,

Iowa, native Meredith Willson. Best known as the creator of

Broadway’s “The Music Man,” Willson was awarded a 1963

University of Iowa Alumni Association Distinguished Service

Award for “setting the spirit of Iowa to music.” The lively cheer

is sung hundreds of times during Iowa athletics events the

year around.

The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA

Let every loyal Iowan sing;

The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA

Until the walls and rafters ring (Go Hawks!)

Come on and cheer, cheer, cheer for IOWA

Come on and cheer until you hear the fi nal gun.

The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA

Until the game is won.

The Hawkeye NicknameThe University of Iowa borrowed its athletic nickname from the state of Iowa many years

ago. The name Hawkeye was originally the name of the hero in the fi ctional novel, The

Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper. Cooper had the Delaware

Indians bestow the name on a white scout who lived with them.

In 1838, 12 years after the book was published, people in the territory of Iowa acquired

the nickname, chiefl y through the efforts of Judge David Rorer of Burlington and James

Edwards of Fort Madison.

Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his paper to Burlington in 1843

and renamed it the Burlington Hawkeye. The two men continued their campaign to

popularize the name, and territorial offi cials eventually gave it their formal approval.

Herky The HawkeyeThe Hawkeye nickname gained a tangible symbol in 1948 when a cartoon character,

later to be named Herky the Hawkeye was hatched. The creator was Richard Spencer

III, instructor of journalism at Iowa.

The impish Hawk was an immediate hit and acquired a name through a statewide

contest staged by the athletic department. John Franklin, a Belle Plaine alumnus, was

the man who suggested Herky.

Since his birth more than 45 years ago, Herky has symbolized Iowa athletics and

epitomized university life. He even donned a military uniform during the Korean War

and became the insignia of the 124th Fighter Squadron.

During the mid-1950s, Herky came to life at a football game as the Iowa mascot.

Since that time, Herky has been a familiar fi gure at Iowa athletics events.

School ColorsFor 40 years Iowa was without school colors, but in 1887 a group of 50 seniors met on

the steps of the Old Capitol to decide what are now the school offi cial colors. They chose

gold, the color of Iowa’s vast corn fi elds and black, the color of the rich soil.
