WelcOme, Friends.

On behalf of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF), I am pleased to welcome you to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for our annual In Memory Day ceremony. As is our annual tradition, we gather in the shadow of The Wall that memorializes those who are listed as killed or missing in action to pay tribute to the more than 3.4 million Ameri-cans who served in Southeast Asia from 1955–1975. We are here to call attention to those who have passed, and to give them the honor they deserve. Today, we memorialize those who mightily shouldered the burden of war, bravely endured the wounds of war and proudly answered their nation’s call to service.

An entire generation of patriots served honorably and, thankfully, most returned home. However, many never fully recovered, either physically or emotionally, from their experiences in that war. That is why the In Memory program exists—because only a fraction of the casualties actually died on the battlefields of Vietnam. Many more carried their wounds back to “the world” and suffered long after the actual fighting ended. As these men and women pass, it is our duty and our solemn promise, to welcome them home to this place. They may not meet the criteria for addition to The Wall, but they certainly meet the criteria of joining their brothers and sisters in this place of honor and remembrance.

This year, we recognize the contributions made by 121 men to ensure the cause of freedom and liberty. Their names will be added to the In Memory Honor Roll and the memory of their service will forever be linked to this Wall. For as long as this memorial stands, and as long as visitors come to this place to learn, your loved ones will be remembered. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten.

about the In Memory Program

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War. The legacy of the Memorial includes not only those whose names are etched in the granite wall, but embraces all who served during the Vietnam War.

The In Memory Program honors those that died as a result of the Vietnam War but whose deaths do not fit the Department of Defense parameters for inclusion upon The Wall. Many thousands of service members and civilians died as a result of their involvement in the war, but not as a direct result of combat wounds, as is dictated for inscription on The Wall.

Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War.

The Education Center at The Wall will be a place on our National Mall where our military heroes’ stories and sacrifice will never be forgotten. With plans to begin construction in 2014, the Center is a technologically-innovative learning facility to be built on the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans and Lincoln Memorials. Visitors will better understand the profound impact that the Vietnam War and other wars had on their friends and family members, their hometowns and the nation. The Center will feature the faces and stories of the more than 58,000 men and women on The Wall, honoring those who fell in Vietnam, those who fought and returned, as well as the friends and families of all who served. The Center will also celebrate the legacy of service that links the heroes of America’s past to those still serving today.
