Coaches Corner - Spring 2013 - Soccer
• As soccer continues to grow in the USA, more elementary schools have added soccer to their sports program.
• Dunham’s carries men’s, women’s and youth soccer cleats in a wide range of price points from Nike, Adidas, Puma, and Under Armour.
• Basic adult and youth Adidas and Nike soccer shoes are carried in all stores, while more advanced models are carried in limited stores.
• Everything in a soccer shoe is designed to give the player the most feel for the ball.
• There is no toe cleat in soccer shoes; this enables the player to get under the ball without catching his shoe on the turf.
• The uppers do not have a very large toe box. There isn’t any excess room in the toe area which would lessen the feel for the ball.
• Uppers are usually made of leather or synthetic leather. The synthetic material that is used in soccer cleats is softer and more flexible than the materials used in baseball cleats.
• Soccer shoes are built on a flat last. There is little or no curvature in the sole – the sole is level from front to back.
• The toe and ball of the foot area is smooth with raised stitching for ball control.
• Molded plastic or nylon cleats are the most common type of cleat used in soccer shoes due to their low cost.
• Soccer shoes are reinforced along the sides of the foot for durability in side to side motions.

SUPER SOCCER INFORMATION
choosing the right siZe BaLL
In general, ball sizes go by the age group of play. Here’s a quick breakdown:
• Ages 8 and under - Size 3 Ball• Ages 8 to 12 - Size 4 Ball• Ages 13 and up - Size 5 Ball
choosing the right shinguards
Choosing the right size shinguards can be tough, but there is a simple way to determine the rightlength. Measure the length of your shin and then multiplyby 0.75. The result is the maximum length you should purchase. Any larger may cause discomfort while playing.
