In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events.

The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretak-ers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping

all spectators find creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

Bucknell Bison Athleticssetting the stAndArd of excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 131 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

• A total of 399 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2012-13 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 509 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2012-13.

• In addition to the 124 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 338 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including nine in 2012-13.

• Bucknell has earned 95 Patriot League championships in 23 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 120 conference players of the year, 103 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 570 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

• 26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2013.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 23-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 16 years.

• Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-ica selections with 124.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports med-icine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsA nAtionAl Model in ProMoting the scholAr-Athlete ideAl

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by pro-moting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features pro-gramming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

After eight years as an assistant coach to longtime Bison mentor Cin-dy Opalski, Anna Allison has taken over as head coach of the Bucknell program. Among Allison’s chief goals for the team in 2013 is to make it back to the Patriot League Tournament. Bucknell qualified for the post-season seven straight years from 2000 to 2006, but has advanced to the tournament just twice since 2007.

“I hope to see a more calm and collected team this year,” stated Al-lison, an all-conference selection during her collegiate playing days at Oral Roberts. “We have been working on a lot of ball control. I want our team members to keep their technique as they fatigue during a match. Conditioning has been huge for us.”

Bison fans will continue to see a number of similarities from past teams, especially the pace and spirit on the court. Bucknell will also con-tinue to have a balanced offensive attack, which Allison noted is more difficult to block and scout.

“I think we are scrappier this year,” said Allison about a difference from past Bison squads. “There is a renewed sense of heart. You feel it when you walk into the gym.”

As a first-year head coach, Allison is pleased to have a large seven-person senior class to lean on for leadership.

“The seniors are hungry for more wins, better matches and a bet-ter result overall,” noted Allison. “Their commitment and discipline will trickle down to the underclassmen and the season is going to go as far as they want it to.”

Included in the senior class are captains Rose Lewis and Leylin Mar-roquin. Sophomore Katie Price was also elected a captain by her team-mates.

“Our captains are excellent because they do not think alike, but they are all fighters and competitors and it will be fun watching them take the lead,” said Allison.

After missing nearly the entire 2012 campaign with an injury, Lewis is expected to be the starting setter. She appeared in just two matches a year ago after totaling 88 assists as a sophomore.

Freshman Keane Brazda is expected to see some time at setter as well. She was a three-sport participant and a two-time all-state selection in volleyball during her high school days in Massachusetts.

Sophomore Meghan Wentzel, who ranked second on the team with 425 assists last year, will also see some playing time at setter. She was also second on the squad with 22 service aces.

“Meghan has made strides and we hope to get her into the lineup,” commented Allison.

Marroquin and Price will likely both see plenty of playing time at li-bero. With that duo, Allison sees the back row as a position of strength.

Marroquin has played in 66 ca-reer matches and has totaled 534 digs. She was especially strong toward the end of 2012, averaging 16.2 digs over her final six appear-ances.

Price saw action in 22 match-es as a rookie and ranked fourth on the squad with 138 digs. She posted five straight matches with double-digit digs before missing the end of the campaign with an injury.

While Allison is confident the Bi-son defense will be strong in 2013, she is also optimistic about the front row. Seniors Jessica Serrato and Morgan Mientus along with fresh-man Jordan Walker provide plenty of size, strength and athletic ability.

“We are going to see a lot of

power on the outside,” mentioned Allison, who will not have injured sophomore outside hitter Claire Healy at her disposal this fall. “It will be fun to mix and match them throughout the season. I might even try Jor-dan on the right because of her athletic abilities. It will be great to always have someone fresh coming in.”

Serrato’s 176 kills last year ranked third on the team, while Mientus ranked sixth with 93. Serrato’s 386 career kills are most among current Bison, while Mientus is second on that list with 283. Mientus also con-tributed a team-high 356 digs a year ago thanks to playing as squad’s starting libero for the first half of the season before moving back to out-side hitter.

Sophomore Karen Campbell made an impact as a rookie last fall. She started 28 of the team’s 29 matches and was one of just two Bison to see action in all 107 sets. The middle blocker ranked second on the team in blocks (106) and fourth in kills (173). Her 92 block assists led the Bison and ranks her fourth on the Bucknell single-season ledger.

Freshman Erika Eastley is expected to follow in Campbell’s footsteps and make an impact in the middle this year. Allison stated the Torrance, Calif., native will likely be a member of the starting lineup.

“We were a little short on depth in the middle, and Karen and Erika give us good balance,” stated Allison, who expects Campbell to be a force in the Patriot League in 2013. “They are a little different on their offensive scheme, but they are both excellent blockers.”

Junior Amanda Hall will also be in the mix for playing time in the middle and right side. She posted 49 blocks to rank third on the team a year ago.

Seniors Kristen Titley, who will see action on the right as well as the outside, and right side hitter Hannah Young provide plenty of additional experience to the lineup. That duo totaled 185 kills a year ago and has played in 121 combined matches over the last three years. Young en-ters the year nursing an injury, but should still contribute to the team’s success.

“Kristen and Hannah were both abroad in the spring and came back ready to make their mark in their final year. They are fully committed to this program, and that is a testimony to the kind of seniors we have.”

Senior Kellye Zobrist and junior Kadri Lutter were key reserves a year ago in defensive roles and will battle for more court time. Addition-ally, sophomore right side hitter Kristen Gelenitis will aim for more play-ing time in 2013.

“We have a lot of people that have great individual skills,” praised Allison. “Kellye has a great serve and plays tenacious defense, while Kadri is a very accurate and ag-gressive spot server.”

Allison will continue to learn about the freshman class that in-cludes Brazda, Eastley and Walk-er, in addition to Jackie Beyer, Re-becca Forbes, Kendall Kaestner and Kristen Parks.

“It’s a large freshman class and it’s a good one,” commented Al-lison. “They work extremely hard and have a lot of talent. Jackie will be playing right side for us. She goes high and is an excel-lent blocker. Kristen and Kendall continuously surprise us in their passing and defensive abilities. Rebecca has been rehabbing an injury and we are anxious to have her back sooner than later. They will only get better as the year pro-gresses and I expect to see a num-ber of them in the lineup.”

The construction of the Kenneth Langone Athletics and Recreation Center specifically impacted the Bucknell volleyball program in a significant way. The relocation of the Bison men’s and women’s basketball teams to Sojka Pavilion left Davis Gym as the premier volleyball and wrestling facility. The venerable 1,000-seat arena was dedicated on June 13, 1938 and has hosted Bison athletic events for more than 70 years. The Davis Gym hardwood was recently refinished and painted with volleyball boundaries as its primary color scheme. The team’s spacious locker room and coaches offices are located just off the main playing floor and received extensive renovations in the summer of 2013. A new scoreboard was add-ed in 2007, as well.

Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt announced Anna Allison as the next head coach of the Bison volleyball program on Jan. 8, 2013. Allison spent the last eight years as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for Bucknell and has mentored some of the program’s top setters during her tenure.

In 2006, Allison helped guide former Bucknell setter Shannon Pitsch to a school single-season record total in assists (1,199), which also ranked first in the Patriot League. Pitsch, who was a 2008 All-Patriot League selection and a two-time Patriot League All-Tournament Team honoree, went on to

claim the career record (3,597) under Allison’s tutelage as well. More recently, Allison guided Kat Tauscher and Meghan Wentzel to top-10 rankings in the Patriot League in assists during the 2012 campaign.

“I feel truly honored to have the opportunity to lead our women’s vol-leyball program,” said Allison after being named head coach. “Bucknell is a special place and has the highest regard for the scholar-athlete model. I am excited to have the chance to elevate our volleyball program to a perennial championship contender and to be able to provide a positive and enriching experience to our student-athletes. We will need to get back to the basics - build a strong foundation, raise our volleyball IQ - but I know that our women are ready to move forward.”

“I am very pleased that Anna Allison will be remaining in the Bison Athlet-ics family as the next head coach of the volleyball program,” said Hardt in January. “Anna has been a vital member of the staff as an assistant coach for the past eight years, and I am delighted that she will now get the chance to lead the program. Her familiarity with Bucknell and our scholar-athlete tradition should make for a very smooth transition.”

A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a member of a prominent volleyball family, Allison is a 2004 graduate of Oral Roberts University, where she was one of the top setters in Golden Eagles’ history. Allison was a First Team All-Mid Continent Conference selection three times and was named Setter of the Year in 2000 and 2002. As a senior in 2002 she shattered the Oral Roberts career assists record as well as the Mid-Con career service aces record. Oral Roberts won four straight league titles and played in four NCAA Tournaments during her playing days.

A two-time team captain, Allison was also an outstanding student and earned Scholar-Athlete honors while successfully completing degrees in advertising and marketing communications. She completed her Master’s degree in education-athletic administration from Northcentral University in December 2012.

A lifelong student of the sport of volleyball, Allison’s enthusiasm and com-mitment to the game was influenced by her father, Antonio Carlos Moreno, who played for the Brazilian national team for 16 years and participated in four Olympic Games. Anna’s twin brother, Carlos, was an All-America setter who earned AVCA Player of the Year honors while leading BYU to the 2004 NCAA men’s national championship.

In 2003-04 Allison served as graduate assistant coach at Oral Roberts, where she worked closely with the Golden Eagles’ setters and assisted in scouting and recruiting. Throughout her undergraduate career she coached the ORU Club team, featuring players aged 12 to 18, as well as the 16-18 Tulsa Volleyball Club. In her native Brazil, Allison was a regular coach at the S.P. Volleyball Camp and has worked as director, recruiting manager and coach with the Moreno Corp. Over the summers, she has served on the staff of the Gold Medal Square Camp as well as the Bentley College Camp.

Bucknell volleyball added Niece Curry to its coaching staff as an assis-tant on March 15, 2013. Curry, a former player at the University of South Carolina who brings a wealth of coaching experience from the high school and club levels, joins first-year head coach Anna Allison on the bench for the 2013 campaign.

“We are very excited to have Niece join our staff,” said Allison at the time of Curry’s hiring. “Niece is a great student of the game and a fierce competitor. I cannot wait to have her on the court working with our front line. She had a great playing career at South Carolina and our players will

benefit tremendously from her knowledge of the game.” Curry’s most recent experience came with Harrison High School in Farmington, Mich., and Legacy Volleyball Club, where she served as

head coach last year. Prior to that, the native of Kalamazoo, Mich., also held the head coaching position at Club Extreme ASICS Volleyball Club, working with both the U17N and U14N squads. Curry led the U14 group to a 52-17 record and finished sixth in the state in 2011.

During her playing days, Curry was a three-year letterwinner at South Carolina. A middle blocker, she was named First Team All-SEC as both a junior and senior. Her junior campaign also saw her finish second in the conference in hitting percentage (.404) and blocks (114). That same year she earned a nod to the All-South Eastern Region Team and competed with the USA Olympic Summer Team. As a sophomore Curry was also among the team’s leaders in blocks and kills.

Off the court, Curry was a member of the Dean’s List all four years while earning her degree in psychology and a minor in social work. She was also a regular member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll before graduating in 2004. She then completed her MBA in Human Resources Management from the University of Phoenix in 2009.

Conference as both a junior and senior and capped off her career in 2009 with the team’s MVP award.Following her career at UMES, Woodward played for Gislaved Voleyboll Klubb in Sweden in 2010-11 and Reggio Calabria SS. Cuore in

The native of Garden Grove, Calif., got her first taste of coaching at the Regis University Volleyball Camps in Denver. There she spent two summers working with players aged 12-18 on position-specific and overall game skills. She was later a youth coach at Gold Medal Squared Elite Volleyball Training in Arizona and most recently completed a turn at the University of Albany where she assisted the Great Danes with a number of responsibilities including recruiting, scouting, training and compliance and administrative tasks.

A member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for academics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at UMES, Woodward is also a member of the Golden Key Honor Society as well as the Phi Gamma Mu and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.

Bucknell Athletics Hall of FameKATIE STEELE ’96 is the only Bison volleyball play-er to be named to the All-Patriot League team four times. She was a two-year captain and graduated as the school record-holder in hitting percentage, aces and blocks. Most important, Steele, who was also a Patriot League Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-District selection, is credited for helping turn a strug-gling program into a league power. After compiling a 45-186 record from 1985-92, Bucknell went 63-35 in Steele’s sophomore, junior and senior years. The Bison were the most improved team in the country in 1993, and by Steele’s senior year team finished 26-7 and won its first Patriot League regular-season title with a 6-0 record. She entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2007.

MELISSA WHARTON ’98 graduated with 10 school records and is considered one of the best players in program history. She is still the only Bison player to hit .400 in a season, and she did so three times. Wharton recorded a Bucknell and Patriot League-record .445 hitting percentage in 1995 (second-best in the nation that year), and she followed it up by hitting .410 in 1996 and .411 as a senior in 1997. She owns three of the top four single-season hitting percentages in Patriot League history, while her .400 career average is also the school and league record. Wharton’s 1,377 career kills was the school record for 10 years until being surpassed in 2007. She is also the Bucknell and Patriot League career leader in blocks with 631. Wharton was a three-time First Team All-Patriot League selection and earned the Christy Mathewson Award as the top senior athlete in her class. She entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

Be a BisonThe term “student-athlete” signifies some-

thing extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that bal-ances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

What it means to

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.”

— Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth,

written in 1910

Athletics Mission StatementThe Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher educa-

tion, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s

high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, develop-ment, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes

American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, La-fayette, Lehigh, Loyola (Md.) and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola University Maryland join the Patriot League beginning with the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 80 percent of its teams posting an APR score of 985 or higher in the most recent data, and 71 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2012-13 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following:

*The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball and baseball APR.

*71 Patriot League teams, and 74 from full-member institutions, received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for finishing in the top 10 percent of their sport in APR data.

*86 Patriot League teams, and 96 overall from full League members, recorded perfect graduation success rates.

*All eight Patriot League schools scored above 85 percent in gradua-tion success rates.

*Bucknell won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup by 0.5 points over Navy in the closest-ever finish for the title. The Bison won the overall crown for the 18th time and seventh in the last eight seasons.

*Lehigh repeated as the top men’s program in the Presidents’ Cup standings, while Navy once again led the way on the women’s side.

*Six Patriot League student-athletes have been awarded NCAA Post-graduate Scholarships: Navy’s Chris Galvin (Track and Field), Laura Go-rinski (Swimming and Diving), Brigid Byrne (Track and Field) and Jasmine DePompeo (Women’s Lacrosse), Fordham’s Patrick Murray (Football) and Bucknell’s Christian Treat (Swimming and Diving).

*Army’s Brendan Buckley won the Senior CLASS Award in men’s lacrosse as well as the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year honor for men’s at-large sports.

*Buckley and Byrne were named the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, respectively.

*Finalists for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award: Brendan Buckley (Army), Pe-ter Baum (Colgate) and Mike Huffner (Bucknell), Men’s Lacrosse; C.J. Mc-Collum (Lehigh) and Mike Muscala (Bucknell), Men’s Basketball; Chris Rowley (Army), Baseball.

*Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum and Buck-nell’s Mike Muscala were each se-lected in the NBA Draft, becoming the second and third student-athletes in Patriot League history to be drafted.

*14 student-athletes have earned

The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 18 times in its 23-year existence, including 14 of the last 16 years.

The Presidents’ Cup is awarded an-nually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings.

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 23 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 124 Academic All-Americans since 1970 and 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 23 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of up-holding the scholar-athlete model.

The Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation ven-ues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-ath-letes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressio-nal Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife, Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recre-ation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The brand new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a com-petition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the sce-nic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; Becker Field for softball, and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs comple-ment each other, where more than 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vi-sion — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University.

The Plan comprises five strategies:

Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;

Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a resi-dential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility;

Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world;

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future.

The Plan for Bucknell was unani-mously approved by the Board of Trust-ees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implement-ing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
