An abundance of families enjoyed the children’s 2013 Summer Reading Program

“Dig Into Reading”, and the teen program “Beneath the Surface” at the St. Francis

Library. The Youth Room literally erupted with experiments, crafts, and theme

activities. There was truly something for everyone because of the themes. As al-

ways, the summer reading program encouraged young patrons to earn reading incen-

tives, to attend programs, and to enter contests. Because of the emphasis on STEM

(Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math) activities, there was more interest in

nonfiction materials and hands-on projects. Everything going on in the Children’s

area was kicked up a notch because of the mini-themes each week: dinosaurs, con-

struction, insects, fairies, gardening, pirates, rocks and volcanoes, underground ani-

mals, and Egypt. The overall teen theme explored tunneling, hidden things, and

steampunk (airships).

Attendance has improved

this summer. Some of the

increase may be due to dif-

ferent statistic collection

procedures by the previous

librarian. However, the li-

on’s share of the increase

has been due to the perform-

ers booked for the Thursday

Performer Series. An out-

standing group of perform-

ers attracted a loyal audience

each week. Storytimes were also fairly consistent in bringing in families. The suc-

cess of smaller groups, (like the Lunch Bunch) reported can’t be judged by their

numbers, but rather by their enjoyment and educational impact.

Adult Summer Reading

It wasn’t just kids getting in on the fun this summer. Adults were invited to join their

own summer reading program. Every book read counted as an entry into a random

drawing. The fabulous prizes were generously donated by local businesses. There

were 1215 entries this year, an increase of 44% over 2012.

New This Year!

New Hours

After looking at usage, budget and staffing, the

library moved to expand hours during the week,

opening earlier, keeping longer Saturday hours in

the summer, and closing on Sundays. We’re now

open every day at 9:30 am and we have the same

hours year round. The end result is more hours

open to the public!

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The youth services department launched this early

literacy program, thanks to the generous support

of the Friends. Aimed at encouraging parents to

read to their children, we have already seen our

first graduates!

Zinio Digital Magazines

We added 100 digital magazines to our collection, available online via the Zinio digi-

tal magazine service.

New Website

We launched a new website in January to help patrons find information about pro-

grams and services provided by the library.

Library Survey

We conducted a community-wide survey about library resources and services in an

effort to be more responsive to the needs of our patrons.

Monthly Newsletter

We brought back a monthly newsletter, Off the Shelf, to improve communication and

make sure patrons are getting up-to-date information.

New Photocopier

We consolidated patron computer printing and photocopying and are now able to of-

fer both black and white and color printing and copying.

Program Rooms

We spruced up the program rooms with a little color on the walls and new tables and

a projection screen in the Hoppe Room. Not only do the rooms look warm and wel-

coming, they are much easier to set up for the wide variety of programs held in the

space!

Seating Areas

We created a comfortable new seating area in

the adult space and added a couch in the chil-

dren’s area so that a parent and child can sit

and share a book together.

Book Display

We purchased a new tiered book display for

the entryway so staff can offer interesting and

creative displays featuring materials and re-

sources available in the library.

Shopping Carts

Thanks to the generosity of the Friends, we were able to purchase several small shop-

ping carts for patrons to use inside the library.

Congratulations to Jimmy C. and his family! They are the first to complete the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program at our library!

St. Francis Public Library ANNUAL CIRCULATION

In 2013, the library focused on literacy, our collection, and commu-

nication. As a result of these efforts, we had a record-breaking year.

We broke monthly records for circulation (# of items checked out)

in 8 of 12 months and set an all-time high annual circulation record.
