Dear Parents, Welcome back to school. I hope everyone had a wonderful relaxing time with family and friends during our spring break. Now we are ready to take on the rest of the school year. We only have about seven weeks left! The week before the holidays was a special one. I hope you were able to be with us on campus. There were many fun learning activities revolving around spring time and renewal. On Wednesday we had a very special afternoon. The students were rewarded with a snack and a movie for their outstanding behavior for the third quarter. All year we have been teaching and practicing our Starrific 5 school wide expectations which guide our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) program here at Marigny. The students and teachers were treated to a snack and the movie in the gym. The students had a great time. I want to thank the PBS committee and Ms. Haley for planning the event, and so many parents who came out to bag the snack. It was a fun afternoon. We are definitely in full swing of planning for next year. I want to let everyone know that our spring registration will take place on April 22 nd from 9:00 to noon. Please check the St. Tammany Parish School System website at www.stpsb.org for the particulars on the documents you will need to complete registration. Please let your friends and neighbors that live in our district know about registration so we can be prepared for all of our new students coming in August. Also, please remember that I am accepting letters from existing and new parents concerning the class placement of your child. The deadline for sending me a letter is May 3 rd . Please know that whether I receive a letter or not, the placement of each student is carefully thought out with their best interests in mind for optimal continued learning and social development. If you choose to send me a letter, please describe the kind of classroom and teacher you think will ensure continued maximum educational, social and emotional growth for your child. Please do not name a particular teacher. Kindergarten teachers are currently screening the students to gain additional information concerning possible Transitional First grade placement of students who may benefit from an additional year prior to first grade. Please stay in close contact with your child’s teacher as open communication in this process is very important. We will have an informational meeting to discuss “What Happens after Kindergarten” on April 16 th at 6:00 pm in the gym. I hope you are able to attend this meeting as this will help prepare you and your child for the next possible steps in their education. I would also like to take this time to let you about a very important election coming up on May 4 th . There will be bond renewal package on the ballot. This bond renewal package is for improvements to school security, technology and school facilities as well as restructuring funds to impact the areas of greatest need to students. This election will not increase taxes. I encourage you to please go out and vote on May 4 th . Early voting is taking place from April 20 – 27 th . If you have any questions, please feel free to call me or stop by school. Also, please see the flyer in this newsletter for more information. Please check out the important dates in this issue. Our calendar is jammed packed with lots of events and activities as April and May are busy fun filled months here at Marigny. Please plan to come to our last general PTA meeting on Tuesday, April 23 rd . We will be electing officers for next year as well watching first grade classes perform for us! I hope to see you there. Welcome to a very busy month! As the year winds down we are already looking ahead to next year.

Elections will be held at our next General PTA Meeting on Tuesday, April 23 at 6:30pm. Anyone with an

interest in serving on our Executive Board should e-mail our nominating committee chair Sally Gerstner at

[email protected]. You don’t need any prior experience, only a willingness to help. Even if you are a

busy working parent or have small children, there are many opportunities with varying time commitments.

There truly is a place and position for everyone! We also need parents to help serve on budget and planning

committees that will meet over the summer. If you really liked something we did or didn’t agree with

something we did this year, this is an excellent way to voice your opinion and act an active role in planning the

PTA’s path for next year.

I hope everyone can volunteer a few hours at one of the many exciting events we have going on at school

this month. It means so much to our little Starfish when they see one of their family members at school.

Parent volunteers are just one of the many things that make Marigny such a special place to learn!

Thanks again for all that you do!

Julie Faucheux

Marigny Elementary PTA President

The PTA has been very busy planning fun and exciting activities for our Louisiana Cultural Arts Day

on Friday, April 12th. The cultural arts committee is still in need of volunteers to work the

stations for our big day. Please consider giving a few hours of your time in the morning or afternoon

to help make this event a success. You can contact us by either calling 985-674-5996 or send an

e-mail to [email protected].

Thanks to all who sent in their box tops. The contest was a huge success! The winning classes were

as follows: First place, Mrs. Gauthreaux, Second place, Mrs. Cerise, Third place, Mrs. Howell. To

reward these classes, they will each enjoy popsicle parties! Keep sending those box tops and labels

in. We are always collecting, counting, and earning money for Marigny!

The month of April is full of the signs of Spring! Our 1st graders will enjoy warmer weather, bright

flowers around our campus, and several outdoor activities. We will enjoy a wonderful day of fun and

games as we participate in Marigny’s annual field day activities which will include a 1 mile fun run for the

American Cancer Society. We will eagerly participate in Cultural Arts festivities as we learn all about

our state Louisiana! Another highlight of the month will be our field trip to “Insta-gator” alligator

farm. Our little starfish will thoroughly enjoy a day of learning about Louisiana swamps and the

alligators that can be found there! We will move into the final stretch of school with summer right

around the corner. For the remainder of the year we will continue to prepare our little starfish for the

closure of 1st grade and the bridge to 2nd!

Spring is here! T-1 will soon go on a nature walk and document the many signs of this colorful season.

We look forward to having “fun in the sun” at our Field Day on the 5th. What a great time to have

parents volunteer and help with this energizing event! We will continue to learn more about our home

state of Louisiana and test our knowledge on Cultural Arts Day. We will also be learning about insects

and animal habitats too. How fun to get to see animals roaming the fields as we will visit the Global

Wildlife on the 19th! What an exciting place to end the last of our field trips of our T-1 year at

Marigny.

We hope you all enjoyed your Easter Holiday. We want to thank all of the parents who contributed and

were able to come be a part of our Spring Celebration! It was such a nice way to start the holiday!

The kids really enjoyed it when Lakeshore High School Agriculture students brought their baby animals

to share with us. The babies were all so cute and the kids were able to have a hands on experience with

each of them. This Friday, April 5th we are excited to have our Field Day and Relay for Recess! I hope

to see some of you there! Also, April 12th we will be celebrating Louisiana Cultural Arts Day! Both will be

a lot of fun for the children!

*Our next K-Kids meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 15th from 4:00 to 5:15pm. Our theme will be “Cleaning -up

or improving the environment.” We will be participating in a spring cleanup and campus beautification project. We also will

have a guest speaker from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.

*A permission slip/meeting reminder will be sent home the week before the K-Kids meeting. It must be signed and

returned by the meeting day. Only students with signed permission slips will be allowed to stay after school for

the meeting. Parents will not be called on the day of the meeting.

The Marigny K-Kids are excited to have participated in a new event this year called Relay Recess. Relay Recess is an

event dedicated to supporting the American Cancer Society. The Relay Recess program is like the ACS Relay for Life

event, but it's for elementary school students. The program consists of these components:

*Education: Students will participate in activities that focus on nutrition, physical activity, sun safety, and tobacco

prevention.

*Fundraising: Students, teachers, parents, and staff can raise funds for the American Cancer society. Our school raised

$345 at our Chili’s fundraiser night! WOW!!!

*Physical Activity: The Relay Recess program offers a lot of fun ways for students to get active.

At each of our club meetings, we learned about these components as we prepared for the big event at Field Day. Many

thanks to all who participated! A very special thank you to Sally Gerstner, our Relay Recess coordinator!!

*Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

Mandeville Northshore Kiwanis sponsors our Marigny K-Kids and Terrific Kids programs. Membership in Kiwanis is open to

the men and women in our community. Northshore Kiwanis Club is having a visitor’s day on Thursday, May 16th at 7:15a.m.

at the New Covenant Presbyterian Church. The annual Northshore Golf Tournament fundraiser is scheduled for Monday,

May 13th. Proceeds from the golf event help to fund Key Club scholarships for local high school students. If you would

like more information about either of these events, please contact Ms. Hladky at [email protected].

*Thank you for helping Marigny Elementary and K-Kids

make a difference in our community!

Thanks for all of

your support!

Ms. Brasher’s class has been working hard on building bridges. They started from scratch

learning about different types of bridges, designing, and planning their bridge out. Students

then had $10,000.00 to buy bridge materials with. They had to budget and plan to get their

final product.
