Artistic Upholstery was founded in 1952 by Jim Mitchell, an accomplished furniture designer who was born and worked in the Scottishfurniture town of Beith in Ayrshire.

Jim was trained under the critical eye of his father, a respected designer and master craftsmen with Matthew Pollock and Son, makers of some of the finest furniture in Scotland, who are accredited to making some of the luxury furniture and fittings on both RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth.

Jim moved south in the mid 1930’s and settled in Nottingham, where he found work designing both cabinets and upholstery as a freelance, and soon commenced working in the thriving town of Long Eaton.

He always wanted to be in control of design and manufacture, so on the 13th October 1952, he commenced making bespoke upholstery on the third floor of a magnificent lace mill in Derbyshire, later moving to a 4000 square feet factory in the heart of Long Eaton. Over the years we have expanded to some 30,000 square feet to include showrooms, upholstery workshop, and polishing shop and design studio.

These mills have more than played their part in the growth and history of the town, built to hold hundreds of Lace Machines, where the thrum of looms filled the air making the highest of quality of ‘Nottingham Lace’ which was shipped to every corner of the globe.

It is impossible not to feel inspired by such a legacy, indeed, Long Eaton is known throughout the world as the centre of quality upholstery within the United Kingdom.

Jim’s vision of producing the very best of furniture still exists here at Artistic, where our sofas and chairs can be found in some of the most exclusive stores in the world, together with fine country houses, embassies, hotels, and of course, those who appreciate the finer things in life.

Artistic is still privately owned and managed by the founding family, now in its thirdgeneration and still very much ‘hands on’ by family members. We are one of the oldestfurniture companies in the area in terms of family ownership.

In 1989, Artistic Cabinets was born, changing its name to Iain James Furniture to reflect James two grandsons Iain and James, where Iain is Managing Director.

The two companies work in close harmony and share the same premises and showrooms whilst keeping their individual identities.

In 1998, the company was awarded the coveted Manufacturing Guild Mark by theWorshipful Company of Furniture Makers in the City of London, in recognition ofHigh Quality production and manufacturer. Limited to just 50 companies in the UK.

Modern ‘line and track’ systems are used in many furniture factories today, and consequently traditional skills to some extent,have been lost.

We have retained those skills, handed down from one generation to the next. We do however, acknowledge that not all furniture requires such attention and skill.

Regardless of style, each piece is meticulously hand made. At Artistic quality is measured in the areas you don’t see, areas under the fabric and by the way the base frame is made and the filling used for example.

The majority of our frames are constructed from sustainable hardwoods, glued, screwed and dowelled for longevity. Vulnerable areas likecorners have solid blocks for extra strength and withstand years of daily use, whether in a lounge or hotel. Some decorative pieces however,do need more care and attention, where delicate legs are at most risk, but handled properly, they too will last a lifetime.

Fabrics are hand cut and pattern matched by a team of highly skilled cutters, with welts either matched or cut on the bias, depending on the fabric and design. All fabrics are overlocked before being sewn by our machinists, who take time to ensure everything is matched, and allcushions have concealed zips, then it is up to our time served upholsterers to use their skills to tailor these fabrics over layers of fillings likehessian, felts and high density foams and fibres, to make that lovely sofa or chair.

We are at home with any fabric, from fine silks, often chosen for light or decorative use to leather, whatever the application or use,we tailor your furniture to the same high standards.

Most designs have traditional mesh coil springs on steel laths for the seats, with areas ofextreme use having heavier gauge springs to retain shape and support.

Some decorative chairs and sofas have individual 8 way hand tied coil springs stitched to jute webbing, whilst some designs have serpentine springs due to restricted height or depth of seat. Backs are mainly serpentine sprung. Depending on the design and level of comfort required, cushion fillings vary from high density foams and fibres through to dequilled feather and down.

It is worth considering what type of comfort and look you require when selecting cushioninteriors.

Feathers for instance, require more maintenance and plumping than a feather or fibre wrapinterior. Generally the lower the quality of feather, the heavier it will be, whilst a mixture Feather of Down will give a better sit, look, and be easier to maintain.

I am very proud to have maintained my father’s principles of making the highest quality of upholstered furniture and customer service laid down in 1952. I could not have achieved this without the many skilled, talented and dedicated people past and present who have worked with us over the years, and shared these same principles, making our company one of the most respected and trusted within the furniture industry, both within the UK and world-wide.

By Road: Junction 25 of the M1 and A52 roundabout, take the road to Long Eaton. Follow Bostocks Lane to the mini roundabout and turn right. Follow the road until you reach the next roundabout and turn left onto Derby Road, continue towards the Town Centre. Bridge Street is on the left hand side immediately before the Canal bridge. By Rail: Long Eaton Railway Station connects through from Derby and Nottingham main line stations. Both have regular services from London and the North. By Air: East Midlands Airport is situated only a few miles away and has good connections from most UK and European airports. (Transport will be provided on request).
