Dear Parent Volunteer,

It is through your hard work and dedication that our programs and results are the envy of our peer schools. Over the past six years, parent participation has averaged 75% across the board, and the Academy has received an average of $1.6 million for the Annual Fund, and an additional $1.9 million in capital gifts towards the Senior Family Campaigns.

Thank you for offering to serve in the upcoming year and for helping to keep our great track record humming along. I want you to know that your efforts are greatly appreciated by the Board, the faculty and administration, and all Deerfield alumni.

For the Annual Fund, we would like to continue our strong rate of participation and dollar contributions. For the Senior Family Campaign, we are working to create a permanent endowment in support of student-organized cultural and entertainment activities, both on and off campus (The Fund for Student Life). We are hoping to continue the traditionally high participation of our senior class families of 80% plus.

Under the great leadership of Sheri and Robert Fleishman P’07,’11,’14 and Margaret and Andy Paul P’14 for the Senior Family Campaign, and Kathy and David Ilsley ’76 P’16,’17 and Karen and John Wood P’10,’13,’17 for the Annual Fund, I know that your energy, enthusiasm, and motivation will yield great results. I look forward to working with you and helping in any way that I can.

Thanks again, good luck, and go get ’em!

Roger S. McEniry ’74 P’07,’10Trustee and Development Committee Chair

The Annual Fund

This Fund provides the Academy with the ability to explore, experiment, and upgrade our educational programs. Multimedia technology for language study, collaborative teaching in American Studies and AP Cambridge/Global H2O, Broadway-quality sets for theater, and new uniforms for our athletic teams are just a few of the many ways in which the Annual Fund enhances the Deerfield experience.

For nearly four decades, the families of Deerfield seniors have come together to honor the accomplishments of their children by creating a legacy gift. Past efforts have had a transformative effect on Deerfield, and we’re particularly excited about the opportunity before us this year: an Endowed Fund for Student Life in support of student-run activities on and off campus.

The Endowed Fund for Student Life will support a robust program of cultural, educational, and entertainment events on campus, including musical acts, artistic exhibits, and guest speakers. The Fund will also support students attending performances and events regionally and, perhaps, nationally. In addition to greatly enriching the Deerfield experience, this will create leadership opportunities for students, as they will manage and organize the program. The Fund description is as follows:

Class of 2014 fund for student life

This Endowed Fund is being established by the families and friends of the Class of 2014 to support student-planned and organized cultural, entertainment, and educational activities, both on and off campus. The Fund envisions a robust program of cultural and entertainment options managed by a student activities organization, with oversight by the Director of Student Activities, and mentored by Deerfield visual and performing arts faculty and staff, along with leaders of local cultural and entertainment organizations. Program options could include bringing musical acts, artistic exhibits, and guest speakers to Deerfield’s campus; groups attending performances and events in the Five College area, Boston, or NY; and other culturally-based educational and travel opportunities.

What Are Deerfield’s Priorities?

Our comprehensive campaign, Imagine Deerfield, is raising $200 million for students and teachers. The top three priorities of Imagine Deerfield are:

renewing our faCulty

Because the best teaching comes through a relentless pursuit of excellence, Deerfield encourages faculty to identify new opportunities, deepen their skills, and renew their thinking.

Over the past year, our teachers have pursued advanced degrees, collaborated on curriculum development, and attended innovative workshops—both on campus and around the world.

expanding the faCulty

Deerfield is investing in additional faculty to ensure that meaningful relationships with students continue to define the Deerfield experience.

Deerfield’s new Director of Inclusion and Community Life and Director of Global Studies, as well as additional teachers in the math, science, and language departments, are creating excellent opportunities for faculty collaboration.

strengthening aCademiC support

We will continue to help students thrive at Deerfield, in college, and beyond by creating opportunities for personalized programs and resources, and by providing enhanced test preparation programs, individualized guidance, academic counseling, and diagnostic tools to evaluate student progress.

How Do I Encourage Other Parents to Support Deerfield?

1. Give. Make your own gift or pledge before you begin your calls.

This makes it possible for you to invite every parent to join you

in supporting Deerfield this year.

2. Prepare. Know who you plan to call and what you would like

them to give. Familiarize yourself with current information about

Deerfield so that you feel confident discussing current school activities.

3. Ask. Most people simply do not give until they are asked.

4. Thank. Thank parents for the conversation no

matter how long or short, and pass on relevant information

to Parent Giving staff. The personal touch is by far the best

use of your time.

While there is no single “best” way to secure gifts for Deerfield, certain actions tend to result in more success.

Your organization, determination, and follow-through will directly affect the

results for your class. Thank you for “making the ask” for Deerfield. We simply

could not sustain our excellence without you.

3. Securities

Please notify our office of all potential stock transfers, including the name of the security and the number of shares. Unidentified transfers can delay official acknowledgement of the gift.

• Donor conveys to his/her broker the amount or total shares designated to Deerfield Academy.

• The broker will transfer stock to:

The Account of Deerfield Academyc/o Ms. Loretta PriceJ.P. Morgan Clearing Corp.One Metrotech CenterNorth Brooklyn, NY 11201Phone: (212) 888-6197Fax: (212) 888-2349DTC# 352, Account number: 865-76070-19

• If you have questions or stock certificates to transfer, contact Debra Diemand, Director of Administrative Services, at (413) 774-1839.

4. Matching Gifts

Corporate Matching Gifts contribute more than $200,000 per year to Deerfield. Individuals receive donor recognition for their initial gift PLUS the amount of their matching gift.

• Encourage parents to seek a match through their companies or through their spouses’ companies.

• Donors must initiate the matching gift through their own company, usually online or with their Human Resources office.

• A listing of companies who will match gifts to Deerfield is available on Deerfield’s online giving page or: matchinggift.com/Deerfield.

5. Gift Planning

Gift Planning programs benefit Deerfield, while offering tax advantages and/or income to the donor. They are characterized by a desire to “perpetuate giving” through a will, a trust, an annuity, or some other planned vehicle, and are recognized by membership in the Boyden Society. For more information, contact Katherine McKay, Director of Gift Planning, at [email protected] or (413) 774-1872.

Stay in Touch

You are Deerfield Academy’s greatest advocate. No publication, public appearance, or letter can take the place of an enthusiastic update from a friend who not only understands what’s happening at Deerfield today, but also understands the importance of parent support. You can help parents define their relationship with the school, and then facilitate that relationship.

Email or call [email protected] or 413-774-1474:

• When family contact information has changed

• When a family does not wish to receive certain mailings

Submit notes directly to deerfield.edu/alumni/notes, email news to [email protected], or send to the address below:

Of course, contact information, including address and giving information, is to be held in the strictest confidence and used solely for the purpose of defining or strengthening relationships with Deerfield.
