Clubs & Activities~

Classical School added a Typing Club this school year led by Mrs. Foley.

Solo and Ensemble: Classical School had 27 entries (solos, duets, & a trio) by 20 students in the WSMA (Wisconsin School Music Association’s) District Solo & Ensemble this year. Of the Class A entries, five student soloists made it to State. Andrea also earned an “Exemplary” (highest honor) at the State level on violin.

Mythology Club had 40 members take the American Classical League’s national exam. Eleven Classical Students won National Awards.

Our Student Council hosted a very successful fall food drive benefiting St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. They also collected for Toys for Family First Ministries and completed a coin drive benefitting COTS Transitional Shelter.

Once again, the Yearbook Committee and Classical parent, Duyen Bagwell, is putting in long hours to produce a beautiful yearbook to commemorate another successful year.

We had a year filled with opportunities to participate in clubs and after-school activities such as:

Art Club Battle of the Books Forensics Ski Club Mythology Club Solo and Ensemble

Suzuki Stars Typing Club Singing in Wisconsin Detache’, Martele’, Sautille’ Classical Running Clubs

Chess Club Safety Patrol Student Council Middle School Athletics Yearbook

Attendance in our clubs and programs is outstanding--at last count, rosters totaled over 500 students!

Staff Appreciation~

Our wonderful Staff Appreciation Committee, led by Carly Mc Dougal, let our staff know how much they are valued throughout the school year by providing delicious meals on conference nights and a week’s worth of treats during our Staff Appreciation Week. Parent volunteer, Jill Delfosse and her committee, provided snacks for all of our staff meetings this year.

Laurie Munson, parent volunteer and Book Fair Coordinator for many years, once again provided us with a “Book Fair Breakfast & Browsing” during the week of Scholastic Book Fair.

Student Council, led by parent volunteer Deb Sonntag, provided a creative token of appreciation for each teacher every day of Staff Appreciation Week.

Parent/Grandparent Volunteers~

So many of our parents giving their time and energy to help build and maintain our program. We are truly fortunate to be part of this caring & collaborative community! A special thank you to Marcia Korducki for traveling from Milwaukee every Wednesday to volunteer her time at Classical.

Current & Prospective Classical Students & Families~

Fifty 8th graders are about to graduate Classical School. This year’s class will be our sixteenth graduating class!

299 prospective students applied for 2017-2018 admission during the lottery; 149 kindergarten

applications were received; 150 students applied hoping to gain enrollment in 1st - 8th grade.

Two Prospective Parent Meetings were held this year to better educate prospective families on the philosophy of Classical School.

Classical managed a booth at the AASD All School Fair held at City Center and at the Appleton Mini-Charter Fair held at the Community Early Learning Center. Classical School also participated in the first annual Go Valley Kids Family Fun Expo held at Appleton North High School.

Close to 50 school tours and observations were given to prospective families interested in Classical School. Upwards of 200 calls and emails were answered from parents interested in our program.

Classical Leadership~

Mr. Bomann led our school through another successful school year, and looks forward to his new role as our Classical School administrator.

Teachers successfully completed the Core Knowledge curriculum as promised in our mission.

They proctored the state mandated assessments and MAPS testing which we use in documenting student growth. They accumulated many hours of professional enrichment & program involvement, held leadership roles on our Educational Program Committees, and continue to work with the CCSA Board in strengthening our Classical School Curriculum.

The CCSA Board (all volunteer parents) successfully worked with the district to hire our new Classical School administrator. They have advocated for building improvements with the district, spoken with legislators about the educational landscape in Wisconsin and recruited potential Board members. Mr. Raj Dugal has joined our CCSA Board.

It’s incredible to reflect on our program each year. Through commitment and dedication by all stakeholders, we have created a program by which

our children can grow and thrive in mind, body, and spirit. We are very proud of everything our students, staff, and the CCSA Board have accomplished!

Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives ~choice, not chance, determines your destiny. ~Aristotle

Minds in Motion Grades K-6 will be participating in Classical School’s 4th “Minds in Motion”

event on the second to last day of the school year, Tuesday, June 6th.

This event combines different subject areas and activities centered

around our Classical School Curriculum. Grades K-2 will participate in the

morning before lunch. Grades 3-5 will participate in the afternoon following lunch. The 6th grade students will

be helping to run the event by being station leaders or student group leaders. Students will be participating

in class groups, so be sure to watch the Pegasus Flyer for your child’s assigned color. We ask that each child

wear a t-shirt that is mostly the assigned color. There is no need to purchase a new shirt for this event!

Minds in Motion will be held outdoors, weather permitting. Please send your child to school: wearing the

assigned colored shirt, with sunscreen already on, wearing tennis shoes, and with a water bottle with their

name on it. We are so excited to be running this event! ~Mrs. Screnock

Classical School’s Mythology Club members from grades three through seven joined

over 10,000 students from the United States, Canada, and Australia in completing

NEWSWORTHY ODDS AND ENDS…

2017 Classical School Essay Contest Winners Announced!

We had great participation in the Classical School essay contest for students in grades 2 – 8.

Students were challenged to identify a hero within the Core Knowledge curriculum and then then

write a biographical essay supporting their opinion. Every entrant promised to complete the essay

without any writing support from anyone. Kudos to all of these students who took the time to create,

edit, and revise their individual essays and abide by this strict honor code. Writing is a personal and,

in this case, public expression of one’s original thoughts and while necessarily the judges must choose

some essays above others, the collaborative judging process can often be akin to a winding path with

many subjective interpretations. If your essay was not selected as a winner, please consider entering

the contest again next year. Every essay had touches of gold and yours might very well have been

close to being a winning essay.

Third-place/bronze winners will receive a $15 gift card; second-place/silver winners receive a $25

gift card; and first-place/gold winners receive a $50 gift card. The first place/gold winners read

their essays at the all-school assembly on Wednesday, June 7th . Please join us in the Forum at

8:10am to hear their work.

2nd and 3rd Grade Level:

1st Place Gold Winner: Maria

2nd Place Silver Winner: Lydia

3rd Place Bronze Winner: Ava

4th and 5th Grade Level:

1st Place Gold Winner: Dhruv

Knowledge-a-thon 2017 KAT testing day was quite the production once again this year! Students and staff came to school

dressed as a either a KAT question or answer. We all enjoyed the creativity of the costumes and

many “played the part” in addition to dressing up. Parents and grandparents supported our efforts

by hosting, testing, and tabulating the KAT results and our 8th graders did an excellent job testing

our younger students—all in a 2 hour timeframe! Thank you all for supporting and contributing to

this important fundraiser.

5th Grade Civil War Living History Day

The 5th Grade students participated in the Civil War Living History Day on Friday, May 5th at Horizons

Elementary School. It was a beautiful day outside! Students learned how to march, experienced what a

soldier’s daily life was like, and prepared for battle. The day ended with a battle between the Union and the

Confederates reenacting Bull Run.

The students had so much fun and it was great to see history truly come alive! This is such a unique and

educational experience for the students, and we know they had a wonderful time.

Thank you to all the parents who came to watch and helped students “dress the part” as their uniforms

looked so authentic—We can’t wait to do it again next year!!

Is there a teacher that has impacted your child’s life in a truly significant way?

Honor that teacher by nominating them for the following educator awards:

Mielke Educator of the Year

Is there an educator that you believe should be nominated because of their hard work, commitment, and

dedication to education? Since 1983 outstanding AASD educators have been recognized through the Mielke

Educator of the Year Awards. Please consider this opportunity to honor that teacher.

To nominate an educator does take time and effort. The committee will want to

know the nominee’s biography, his/her philosophy, and asks for letters of

recommendation. However, when all the information is completed and placed in a

binder, it becomes a tribute of the nominee’s contributions to education and can be

a keepsake of their AASD career.

The Mielke Foundation has designated two categories for this prestigious award: Elementary and Secondary

Level. School staff, parents, students, or community members may generate nominations.

The Helen & Ade Dillon Award

The Dillon Award recognizes an AASD staff member who encourages a balanced life for

students in and out of the classroom or school setting. This staff member takes a

personal interest in students' moral, mental, and physical development, thereby enhancing

the students' life skills for continued development of academics, fitness, and

citizenship.

This individual will have successfully completed a minimum of 5 years employment in the Appleton Area

School District. To honor the Dillons' legacy, one unrestricted cash award of $1,000 will be presented to a

recipient at the AASD All Staff Gathering before the beginning of the school year.

How do I nominate a teacher?? If you are interested in information regarding the Mielke Educator of the Year Award program or the Helen

& Ade Dillon Award, the selection process and a nomination form, please follow this link:

http://www.aasd.k12.wi.us/district/nominate_aasd_staff

Applications are due to Ruth Woelfel at the Scullen Leadership Center no later than June 15th.

Nominations can be generated by staff, students, or the community.

AASD Registration for Next School Year The district’s required annual registration is available May 19 via the Infinite Campus

Parent Portal where you will confirm and/or update your student/family’s

information. Now would be a great time to verify that your portal account is active; if

you need help in establishing your account please contact the helpdesk at

[email protected] for assistance. If you need to reset your username and/or

password, please see the instructions on the portal. Be sure to take advantage of getting a jump start on the

2017-18 school year by completing the registration as early as possible for your family. Look for information

coming from the district via email and voice message in the upcoming weeks.

End-of-the-Year Medication Pick-up If your child currently has medication kept in the school office, you must make

arrangements to bring these medications home during the last week of school. Please

be aware that any medications considered to be “controlled substances” cannot be

transported by students. If you indicated your consent on the medication paperwork

you signed, we will send home any non-controlled medications with your student. If

you did not give consent on the medication paperwork you signed, a parent (or another responsible

adult) must come to school to retrieve the medications. Any medications not picked up from the

school office by June 15th will be discarded. Thank you.

Immunizations: What’s New?

ATTENTION 5th GRADE PARENTS New Immunization Requirement!

For those of you already arranging your child’s summer doctor appointments, please be

reminded that ALL students are required to receive a Tdap vaccination upon entrance to 6th grade. If your

child has not yet received his/her Tdap, please make arrangements for your child to receive this vaccination

PRIOR to the start of 6th grade. Community healthcare providers are typically very busy in the weeks

leading to the start of fall classes, so you are encouraged to have your child immunized well in advance of

school beginning.

If you do not wish to have your child immunized, you are required to sign a waiver. The waiver option is

located on the bottom half of the immunization form. These forms are available from the District website

(aasd.k12.wi.us) or from the elementary school office. If you already completed a waiver for your child in

Kindergarten, you will need to complete a new waiver as this immunization is a new requirement.

RECOMMENDED IMMUNIZATION

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine:

This is a three dose series of vaccine given to girls and boys at age 11-12 years to protect against diseases caused by the human

papillomavirus. This vaccine can prevent most cases of cervical cancer in females if it is given before exposure to the virus. In addition

it can prevent other cancers in both males and females. The second and third doses of vaccine should be administered 2 and 6 months

after the first dose. This vaccine is recommended for the following people who have not completed the 3-dose series: Females age 13

through 26 years of age; Males age 13 through 21 years of age.

Chess Club’s Family Night Chess Club culminated their season by holding a family day. Fun was had by all and the giant chess boards

are always a hit!

Music Participation Wrap-Up

So many great supplemental opportunities were provided to our students to enhance their

musical knowledge and skills. Thank you to the music department and Ms. Casey for providing

these opportunities for our students!

Solo and Ensemble – Classical School had 27 entries (solos, duets, & a trio) by 20 students in the WSMA

(Wisconsin School Music Association’s) District Solo & Ensemble this year. Of the Class A entries, five student soloists made it to State. Andrea Buyze also earned an “Exemplary”/highest honor at the State level on violin.

Suzuki Stars – 30 Gr. 2-6 students participated in Suzuki Stars afterschool music club this year, plus some essential

helpers, Jessica Grady (Gr. 9) and many Classical School parents, worked together to make the music run smoothly. We ended the year with a beautiful recital on Thurs, March 16. Suzuki Stars will no longer be offered starting next year, but students interested in continuing individual music study are highly encouraged to take private lessons on an instrument of their choosing or audition for boy, girl, or church choirs in the community.

Singing in Wisconsin was an extra-curricular choral festival on Sat, Nov 12, 2016 and 11 Classical School students

(Gr. 5-6) participated! Singing in Wisconsin takes place every year at the beginning of November and up to 12 elementary school students can participant per school.

Opera for the Young’s The Elixer of Love was a big hit on Tues, March 14 with 16 students (Gr. 4-6) participating

in the chorus. The opera for next year will be Rusalka, A Mermaids Tale based on the opera Rusalka by Antonín

Dvořák. We look forward to Gr. 4-6 students auditioning next spring and 16 new participants performing with next year’s Opera for the Young!

Elementary strings groups Détaché, Martelé, and Sautillé worked hard together and had a lot of fun this year! The

students met for one large group lunch rehearsal and one 30 min sectional (lessons in small groups of all the same string instrument) each week as per the layout of the AASD elementary strings program. The classes are very valuable for students/strings families as they are offered for free as part of the regular school day. Hopefully most current Gr. 4-6 strings players will be continuing next year! Returning elementary strings players even plan to gather on Meet ‘n Greet night next fall and demonstrate/perform some of the songs that we have learned to Classical School students and their families, especially interested incoming 4th graders. Students are encouraged to join orchestra at their first opportunity in the fall of Gr. 4, although they may start a string instrument in the fall of any Gr. 4-6 school year in the AASD.

Classical Boys Running Club In our 4th year, the boys running club has 20 Classical boys in grades 3rd through 6th grade. They

participated in stretches, speed and conditioning and increased their cardio endurance with 15-minute lap

running on the Ferber Trail. The volunteers had a blast with such a great group of boys. With such a wide

range of ages and skill levels it was inspiring to see the boys encourage and cheer each other on. Very proud

to see many not just improve their running skills but leadership skills as well.

Red Carpet Week

Classical School piano students did an excellent job with their Red Carpet performances during Fine Arts Week (the first full week in May). Each class also learned about and practiced good concert etiquette. We will look forward to this week again next year!

Classical School Fine Arts Night

The fifth annual Classical School Fine Arts Night took place on Thursday, May 4th from 6:00-7:30 PM in the forum. Thank you to the Gr. 2-6 student musicians who performed and families that attended this fun event!

Summer Music Programs

Several exciting summer music camps and other programs are available to Classical School students! Flyers came home after spring break. Many district programs had a registration deadline of Friday, May 12th, however they may accept late registration if there is still availability. Lawrence Academy, Heid Music, and other music camps have later deadlines (typically June 1 – so act quickly). Private lessons are also a valuable option.

K-6 General Music In May, we learned patriotic songs from our Core Knowledge Curriculum; the 5th graders sang many of their Civil War songs at the reenactment on May 5th. Now we are wrapping up the year by learning about some non-American styles of music. Grades 1, 2, & 6 are studying historical European composers while the other grades are studying non-Western European music (Gr. 3 – Russian, Gr. 4 – Australian, and Gr. 5 Japanese & Jewish). We are also playing review games to refresh rhythmic, melodic and other concepts from this school year.

4th-6th Grade Orchestra

Students have made huge progress on their instrument playing since the beginning of the year! They presented a wonderful film music concert on Thursday, May 18th. Now after the concert we will watch our performance, review our favorite pieces, and have an incentive giveaway for students with consistent practice records. Please encourage your children to play their instruments at home over the summer. Students that practice over the summer are in much better shape in the fall! We are also

planning to have strings students play in small groups for Meet ‘n Greet in the fall. There is still room in the district’s summer lessons for students going into Gr. 5-8. Contact Mrs. Casey for more info.
