Florida is voting today and youknow what that means: Bro-ken hips and highway pileups.(‘Cause they’re old!) Of course,it also augurs more ominoustidings: A cornucopia of newsarticles — citing a vast array ofpolls, surveys and insiderguesses — attempting to by-pass the vote and just tell uswho will be walking away fromFlorida a winner. This is ours.

Despite Gingrich’s surge inSouth Carolina, most polls havesince shown Romney with a legup in the Sunshine State, though just how high that leggoes has been highly volatile. Some pollsters have him wayup — a 20-point advantage in

one, 19 points in another —but others (one by InsiderAd-vantage, for instance) put thegap in the mere single digits.

We’re sticking with our pre-dictable prediction that Rom-ney will win — though don’t letthis affect your vote, Floridareaders! — based on the num-bers and also because we don’tthink Gingrich, with his narra-tive of onerous marital infideli-ties, can pull the state. (‘Causethey’re old! You know, the “chinos-wearing set”, as oneGQ campaign reporter put it.)

But don’t count your chick-ens just yet, America. Anythinggoes, and evidence suggeststhat Gingrich will stay in therace long after pandering tothe Space Coast subsides.

Could another Republicanjoin the race to face Obama? Is it too late for another Re-publican to jump into the2012 U.S. presidential race?

Mitt Romney is riding highin Florida and threatening totake charge of the Republicannomination with a win inTuesday’s primary there.

But even as some party con-servatives appear to be comingaround to supporting him, many are concerned that thebitter fight between Romneyand Newt Gingrich has dam-aged both of them to the ex-tent that neither would be ableto defeat President Obama inthe Nov. 6 election.

Grassroots conservative ac-tivists are worried that Gin-grich’s attacks on Romney’sbusiness background have giv-en Democrats a big hammerto use against the former Mas-sachusetts governor this fall.

Meanwhile, mainstream Re-publicans think Romney is

right when he says Gingrich isa Washington insider withdeep personal and political bag-gage and more half-baked ideas

than the corner pastry shop. The Romney-Gingrich bat-

tle has left many Americans ina sour mood about the Repub-

lican contenders. So is there a chance that a

popular Republican mightcome to the rescue and snatch

the presidential nomination?Analysts say there is still a

sliver of time for another Re-publican candidate to jump in-to the race.

This year’s campaign calen-dar is loaded with spring con-tests, meaning a Republicancould enter the race in earlyFebruary and still compete di-rectly in states with at least1,200 of the 2,282 or so Repub-lican delegates, according tothe University of Virginia Cen-ter for Politics.REUTERS

“Make sure you lip syncgood,” he responded.

A good one, for sure. Butit would have been a littlesharper if he wasn’tpromoting a Pepsi SuperBowl commercial — thatwould be commercial, nothalftime show — that hestars in with some “X Factor” contestant.

If you live in North Korea, you’re told who you are to beand if you resist, you’ll be sentto a labor camp and do hard la-bor until you die an early death.

It’s this lack of individualityin the face of such brutalitythat was attractive to writerAdam Johnson. So much sothat he set his new novel, “TheOrphan Master’s Son,” withinthe totalitarian regime.

Johnson says that it wasn’tthe mystery nor the creepinessof North Korea that won himover. It was the idea of what itmeans to be a character in yourown life when you have no sayin who you are.

He clarifies: “Here in theWest, you are the main personin the story of your life —everyone else is a secondary

character. We have motivationsand desires and, in the end, wechange and grow and gain wis-dom in some way,” saysJohnson. “In North Korea, there is one central character

— the Dear Leader — and 23million secondary characters.Everyone is constricted to be anunwilling participant in a na-tional narrative they have nocontrol over.”

Despite having no free will,Johnson’s lead character is ableto endure and create his owndestiny. With a touch of magi-cal realism, he undergoes someunbelievable situations. But,then again, North Korea is anunbelievable place.

“How do people inhabitthemselves in a world that is socircumscribed?” Johnson asksrhetorically. “How do you be-come an individual? Those arequestions I’m fascinated with.”

As one of the state’s leading

health insurers, BMC HealthNet

Plan wants everyone to eat right

and stay healthy. That’s why we

recommend rating each plate of

food that you eat. How can you

rate your plate? One way to is by

looking at the colors of the

foods you’re eating: the more

bright colors, the healthier your

meal.

That’s because bright foods like

fruits and vegetables contain

lots of vitamins and minerals.

They also contain fiber, and that

helps your body process food

better.

Eat a rainbow of foodsTo stay healthy, include at least

one or two of the foods listed in

the chart in each meal. Eat at

least five of these foods every

day. And, be sure to choose dif-

ferent fruits and vegetables

throughout the week.

Eat a rainbow of foods, and

you’ll get a variety of vitamins

and minerals!

Now that you know what to

eat, do you know how much you

should eat?

How much is too much?Research shows that a key rea-

son more Americans are over-

weight or obese is because we

eat out at restaurants too much.

Many restaurants offer larger

portions than what you would

cook at home. “Super-sized”

meals might sound like a good

idea, but they actually make you

eat more than you should. In ad-

dition, many restaurant meals go

heavy on ingredients like butter

– things that make food tastier,

but way more fattening!

So, cook and eat at home when

you can. Keep in mind, though,

that for certain types of foods,

larger portions are good. For ex-

ample, most of us would be bet-

ter off eating more fiber-filled

foods like fruits, vegetables and

whole-grains.

And, whether you cook and

eat at home or eat at a

restaurant, follow the portion

guidelines from the United

States Department of Agriculture

(ChooseMyPlate.gov). For more

health and nutrition tips, visit

our Wellness Center at bmchp.org

and be sure to download our “Rate

Your Plate” flyer.

which is the biggest risk.Car seats: A used car seat thatisn’t up to safety standards oris missing parts may not pro-tect your child in a crash, andthere’s no way to be sure thatthe seat wasn’t involved in aprevious accident — some-thing that may have led to in-visible damage.

Game on: It’sPuppy Bowl time

Animal Planet’s annual match is this weekend RefDan Schachner on why he has the best job in the worldDuring Puppy Bowl VIII, 58puppies will stumble over theiroversize paws while, ideally, making it into the end zonewith a chew toy. They mightjust tumble around midfield.Making cute little puppy facesat the puppy cam is also an op-tion. It doesn’t really matter —everyone wins here.

We checked in with ref DanSchachner before the big gameto talk puppy strategy — andfigure out how to steal his job.

What are your responsibilitiesas ref?I’m there mostly to call puppytouchdowns — which happenvery frequently, the rules arepretty loose — and puppypenalties. I have the flag in mypocket and I’m not afraid to useit. How do you break up puppyfights? We have a term called “pancak-ing” — when you flatten like apancake — and that’s a reasonto give the puppies a littlebreak.Which dogs are the most athletic? The shih tzus are cute, but themore robust breeds are theones that are going to score.Surprisingly, the dachshundsare great running backs. Theyseem kind of quiet and baffledat first, but when they get thatchew toy they score.

Be honest: Does cuteness helpwhen it comes to calls? Cuteness doesn’t affect me oneway or the other. But what I dohave to turn a blind eye to arethe puppy fouls — the prema-ture watering of the lawn. Wehave to let some of those go orwe’d never get on with thegame. That said, if there’s a re-ally big foul left in the middleof the field, that will result in atleast a 10- to 15-yard penalty.

Puppy Bowl VIII airs Sunday, 3 to 5 p.m. on Animal Planet.

Are you depressed andsometimes feel that people

are out to hurt you?

When picking a placeto watch the SuperBowl, you’ll want tostrike the right bal-

ance of a convivial atmosphere, broadcasting hardware muscle, food, drink and, most impor-tantly, a distinct absence of fair-weather partygoers who onlyshow up to talk about commer-cials. For all of those reasons,I’ll be watching the game, like Idid all season, at home alonewith shades drawn, huddling inthe closet in abject terror. I sug-gest you do the same.

If you absolutely insist ongoing out to watch the gameamong other fans, there are afew options that will be morefun than a self-imposed exilebubble.

One bar that’s already gotthe proper fighting spirit is Mc-Greevey’s, but that could justbe a natural offshoot of its be-ing an Irish pub. (Look at thelast name on my byline, I canmake that joke.) The bar ownedby Dropkick Murphys’ Ken Ca-sey has made a wager with theowners of Foley’s Pub in New

York City on the outcome ofthe game. The loser will donateall of the proceeds from shep-herd’s pie sales between the Su-per Bowl and baseball’s open-ing day to the charity of thewinner’s choosing. Think ofevery hearty bite as comingright out of the wallet of a Gi-ants fan. Win-win!

Post 390 is going for a moreharmonious Super Bowl mealwith Rivalry Chowder. It’s half-Manhattan and half-New Eng-land chowder (aka the realkind) in one bowl. The chef isfrom New York, so you canprobably yell at him fromacross the room once you’refull.

Russel House Tavern has theright idea, thematically speak-ing, with its “Giant Killer” Burg-er of two half-pound ArcherFarm beef patties, two deep-fried poached eggs, Cabotclothbound cheddar sauce, andhouse-cured ham — as well astortilla chips served with appro-

priately named Gronk’amole. Around the corner at Char-

lie’s Kitchen, the kitchen’s serv-ing angus beef sliders gratisduring the game; and if theweather holds up, the beer gar-den will be open and you canwatch outside by the fire. Glob-al warming is good luck, I’mpretty sure.

Speaking of good luck, at Fo-rum they’re giving out footballsquares, with one free to thefirst 100 people, which you canuse to win prizes. Buckets offive Miller High Lifes for $15,buffalo duck wings and babyback ribs with guava barbecuesauce sound like prize enoughto me, though.

Sweet Cheeks is serving

something called a Super Ballconcoction: a gallon-sized ma-son jar filled with moonshine,house-made cherry brandy andNarragansett Porter. Depend-ing on the game outcome, youmay need to dive head-first intoone of those bad boys real fast.

Either that or a caseload ofNarragansetts for $3 each at Tri-na’s Starlite Lounge, wherethey’ll come in handy washingdown a complimentary buffetof classic New England comfortfood. Nothing comforts like awin though, so please, whatev-er you do, choose carefully.Don’t jinx it for the rest of us.

Though this is the 46th SuperBowl, programmers have onlybeen bringing big-name acts infor the halftime show sinceabout 1991, when New Kids onthe Block sang “Step by Step.”Before that, the entertainmentwas mostly marching bandsfrom the state where the teamswere playing or performerswho didn’t exactly reflect thetastes of the masses, like CarolChanning. We re-watched thehalftime shows and picked ourfive favorites.

Halftime is of the essenceAs Madonna prepares to entertain however many

billion people will tune into the Super Bowl, we look atthe most notable performances of the past 20 years

1. U2, 2002Five months after 9/11, this setfrom Dublin’s finest did a heroicjob of honoring those who diedthat day and saluting the coun-try that U2 always wished theywere from, as Bono revealed anAmerican flag close to his heart.Criticize him for pandering, butit is hard even now not to getmisty as the names of 9/11 vic-tims scroll down a screen to“Where the Streets Have No

Name.” It was the sort of heal-ing the U.S. needed. The Pats’first Super Bowl win that yearalso helped with that healing.

2. Prince, 2007His royal purpleness has alwaysbeen known for his stadium-sized ego, but what made thisperformance unique is that de-spite performing on a stageshaped like the symbol that onceserved as his name, the dude

performed a medley of sevensongs, only three of which werehis. He touched upon others byQueen, Creedence ClearwaterRevival, Bob Dylan and the FooFighters. But since he is Prince,

he obviously made all ofthese tunes his own.

3. Bruce Springsteen &the E Street Band, 2009To condense a Springsteenconcert experience into 13minutes sounds almost aspreposterous as trying to fitthe complete works of Shake-speare onto a Bazooka Joecomic. But the Boss was ableto fill a four-song suite withwhole lot of hokey fun, in-cluding a gospel choir, a flag-throwing ref, a knee-slideacross the stage, some mic-stand gymnastics and the re-turn to the stage of Big ManClarence Clemons, who hadjust had both knees replacedonly a few months previously.

4. Michael Jackson, 1993Billed as “an unprecedentedSuper Bowl spectacular,” thisshow by the King of Pop wasreportedly one of the mostwatched in TV history andwould change the way net-works programmed halftime. This was MJ just months be-fore he was accused of sex-ually abusing children. It’s ee-rie now to hear him say, “noone should have to suffer, es-pecially our children,” but theperformance itself was touch-ing (not the bad kind) as hesang “Heal the World,” andthe crowd held up placards toform drawings by kids.

5. Janet Jackson andJustin Timberlake, 2004Call it “Nipplegate” if youmust, but we always pre-ferred “Super Boob Sunday.”Watching this performanceby Michael’s little sister, it’samazing how the phrase“wardrobe malfunction” be-came the 00’s version of “Ididn’t inhale.” Seriously, wewere supposed to believethat Janet just happened tobe wearing a metal sunburstaround her areola? Regard-less of how planned orunplanned the “bet I’ll haveyou nekkid by the end of thissong” ending was, the duetwith JT on “Rock Your Body”definitely still holds upeight(!) years later.

Are the Democratsas corrupt as GOP?RE: “LIBERAL BAGGAGE CARRIESMORE WEIGHT”: Did John San-genario just bash liberals forbeing socialists and also forhaving a “greed is good” atti-tude? (In other words, forseeking to both redistributeand aggregate wealth?!) Doeshe know what any of theseterms mean? Does he knowhow capitalism works? Or ishe just making this stuff up ashe goes? MARY SMITH, VIA E-MAIL

Perhaps Mr. Sangenariocould name some nameswithin the Democratic Partycaucus who are as corruptand crooked as Tom De Lay,David Vitter, Newt Gingrichand Mitt Romney. At thevery least he might identifysome policies he considersto be “communist ideology.”But then I’m presuming hisletter was serious in the first

place. In semi-related news, a storyemerged over the weekendof the Kansas House Speakerrefering to President Obamaby invoking a little-knownverse from the Bible, Psalm109:8, which includes theline “May his children be fa-therless and his wife a wid-ow.” Has our publicdiscourse fallen so far thatofficeholders can now publi-cally wish the president deadand nobody notices or cares? JOSEPH CONNELL, VIA E-MAIL

“If Obama was aportfolio managerhe would be fired!”

Why are the media andDemocrats so obsessed withMitt Romney’s investmentsand Bain Capital? He ran hisbusiness dealings legally and

helped companies build theirbusiness and employ peoplethat pay taxes. Meanwhile,Mr. Obama invested in Solyn-dra and many other compa-nies — many of which havegone bankrupt only a coupleof years after receivingmillions of American citizens’tax dollars without Congres-sional approval. Mr. Romneyis in the business to do suchthings and is knowledgeableregarding investments. IfObama was a portfolio man-ager he would be fired!JOHN ARSLANIAN, VIA E-MAIL

Yeah, yeah, yeah — you can’tspell “elite” without “Eli.” How cute.

But let’s not forget the two-headed running back beastthe Giants possess in the back-field, that being the tandem ofAhmad Bradshaw and Bran-don Jacobs. Those two guysare absolutely key players inthe Giants offense and willkeep the Patriots defenseguessing as to just what theGiants will do.

The Broncos are all run(sorry Tebow fans), and theRavens have Ray Rice — one ofthe best backs in the NFL. ThePatriots did just fine contain-ing both teams’ runninggame, but the Giants offenseis much more multifaceted —and that goes for their run-ning backs, too.

Jacobs is a ground-and-pound, in your face back.Standing at 6-foot-4, 264-pounds, Jacobs is one of thebiggest backs in the NFL, anduses his body to push aheadfor more yards.

During a Week 9 gameagainst the Patriots, Jacobs ranfor 72 yards on 18 carries, with a touchdown.

Double trouble

Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for104 yards against Buffalo inWeek 6.

Brandon Jacobs posted 101yards on 19 carries in a winover Dallas in Week 14.

In Super Bowl XLII againstthe Patriots, Jacobs ran for42 yards on 14 carries while Bradshaw had 45 yards onnine touches.

that Jacobs has been a bit of aletdown during his career, andhis future in New York hasbeen in doubt on numerousoccasions.

Bradshaw, meanwhile, didnot play in the Week 9 gameat Gillette. In 12 regular sea-son games in 2011, he rushedfor 659 yards and nine touch-downs. The yardage was a sig-nificant drop off from last sea-son's 1,235 yards, but afterfumbling the ball seven timeslast season, he hasn’t fumbledon one rushing attempt thisseason.

But the Giants’ rushingproduction has been fairlysilent during the postseason.Through three games, the twobacks have combined for just327 rushing yards and onetouchdown. Bradshaw did, however, tack on 52 yards onsix receptions in the Giants’win over the 49ers.

With Vince Wilfork an-choring the defensive line, thePatriots will look to continuetheir recent defensive success.
