Top Tundra Advantages Over Ram
The Ram pickup, redesigned back in 2009, has been well received. With its four-link coil-spring rear suspension, it promises a comfortable ride, but lacks the proven toughness of the leaf-spring rear suspension found on Ford, Chevy and Toyota full-size trucks. Still in third place in sales, behind F-150 and Silverado, Ram rolled into 2011 with minor changes and an expanded range of model grades.
This Edge edition will focus on Ram 1500 Crew Cab SLT 4x4 5.7-liter V8 and compare it with Tundra CrewMax 4x4 5.7-liter V8. This cab size is the heart of the market in terms of full-size truck sales, and as you’ll see, Tundra stacks up extremely well against Ram.
All-AROund peRfORmAnceTundra offers an impressive powertrain and great agility.
• more advanced powerplant Tundra develops its peak torque at a lower, more accessible rpm.
• Six-speed automatic and more aggressive axle ratios Tundra’s broad-range transmission and axle ratios make the most of the engine’s great power. Ram’s 5.7-liter V8 only has a five-speed automatic.
• capable chassis Tundra’s TripleTech™ frame uses rugged leaf-spring rear suspension and offers the confidence of a J2807 tow rating.
• Greater maneuverability Tundra CrewMax 4x4 has more ground clearance and a tighter turning circle than Ram Crew Cab 4x4.
GReAT VAlueTundra is an excellent blend of durability and long-term value.
• “most dependable large pickup” Tundra was named “Most Dependable Large Pickup, Six Years in a Row” by J.D. Power and Associates.
• “Best Overall Value of the Year” 2011 Tundra CrewMax (the most recent evaluated) was named a Best Overall Value of the Year award winner by IntelliChoice.
• more north American content According to the American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA), the Tundra has more North American content than any other full-size pickup.
mORe AccOmmOdATinG inTeRiORIn full-size four-door pickups, rear-seat comfort and versatility are a big deal—and Tundra delivers the goods.
• Standard- and available-feature advantages Tundra owners benefit from a range of standard and available features that enhance passenger comfort and entertainment.
• more room in key interior dimensions Tundra offers plenty of room to stretch out, including an additional 4.2 inches of rear leg room.
• comfortable, versatile rear seat Sliding seats, reclining seatbacks and a power rear window make all the difference.
impReSSiVe SAfeTY TechnOlOGYTundra’s list of standard safety features includes items you won’t find on Ram.
• Advanced brake technologies Larger front disc brakes, four-piston front calipers and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) work together to enhance stopping power.
• Added airbags Tundra adds an extra layer of confidence with standard driver and front-passenger knee airbags.

20I2 TUNDRA vs. 20I1 RAM
Like Ford and Chevy, Ram uses a wide range of model grades in an effort to reach a broad spectrum of truck buyers. Starting out with the stripped-down ST, the six-grade Ram model range eventually tops out at the Laramie Longhorn. All grades are offered in the larger cab types. V6 variants have four-speed automatic transmissions, while all V8 engines have five-speed automatics.
Here’s a look at some of the major features of the Ram range:

 All-AROund peRfORmAnce
Ram’s available 5.7-liter V8 is a strong performer and in fact holds a slim horsepower and torque edge over Tundra’s available 5.7-liter V8. But that’s only part of the story. Tundra’s V8 engine is more advanced, with a cast aluminum block for reduced weight and better heat dissipation than Ram’s cast iron block. And dual overhead cams, twice the number of valves and Dual Independent VVT-i help Tundra develop its peak torque at a lower, more accessible rpm than Ram. That means great throttle response and pulling power for Tundra drivers.
six-speed automatic and more aggressive axle ratiosTo maximize engine performance, Tundra 5.7-liter V8’s six-speed automatic offers a broad range of ratios for everything from low-speed heavy hauling to fast highway cruising. Ram’s 5.7-liter V8 (and 4.7-liter V8) only has a five-speed automatic.
For quick acceleration and the brute force needed to pull a heavy trailer, an aggressive axle ratio (one with a higher number) provides greater torque multiplication at the drive wheels. Tundra’s more aggressive standard and available axle ratios make the most of the engine’s power. The Ram in this matchup doesn’t offer an axle ratio that comes close.

Tundra Advantage
Ground clearance (in.) 10.4 8.6 1.8
Turning circle, curb-to-curb (ft.) 44.0 45.4 1.4
Greater maneuverability
Tundra CrewMax has more ground clearance than Ram Crew Cab to help it clear tough off-road obstacles. Plus, Tundra’s tighter turning circle can be a big advantage in the dirt or in crowded parking lots. Ram is less maneuverable.
Capable chassis
Tundra’s TripleTech™ frame uses rugged leaf-spring rear suspension. Durable and low in maintenance, leaf-spring rear suspension is an ideal fit for a hard- working truck like the Tundra. The Ram, on the other hand, uses a coil-spring system with multiple control links to position the axle. Introduced for the 2009 model year, it doesn’t have the proven history of the Tundra’s system.
Another confidence builder is the Tundra’s J2807 tow rating. This SAE standard sets tow ratings based on specific actual performance measurements at the rated weight. Tundra’s J2807 numbers provide real credibility compared with the Ram, which is still using manufacturer-generated tow ratings without SAE verification.

“most Dependable Large pickup”
In J.D. Power and Associates 2011 long-term dependability study (the most recent available), Tundra was named “Most Dependable Large Pickup, Six Years in a Row.”1 The study measures problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old (2008 model year) vehicles and includes 198 different problem symptoms across all areas of the vehicle.
“best Overall Value of the Year”
The IntelliChoice Best Overall Value Awards help to identify best-in-class vehicles that deliver outstanding value and lower-than-expected costs over time. The 2011 Tundra (the most recent model evaluated) was named the Best Overall Value of the Year in the Full-Size Pickup (Light Duty) Class.2

standard- and available-feature advantages
Passenger comfort and convenience are important in big four-door pickups like these. Tundra owners benefit from standard and available features that enhance passenger comfort, such as a power rear window that operates vertically to provide a much larger opening than the horizontally sliding window in the Dodge.

Tundra has larger-diameter ventilated front disc brakes and racing-style four-piston front calipers—features Ram doesn’t offer. The Toyota also has Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), which distributes brake-fluid pressure to the wheels based on the driving conditions and the vehicle load. Ram doesn’t offer these brake features.

All ABs (if installed) are designed to inflate only under certain conditions and in certain types of severe collisions: frontal and knee ABs typically inflate in frontal collisions; side and side curtain ABs in side collisions; Roll-Sensing Curtain ABs at a severe tilt degree, roll or lateral G-force. In all other accidents, the ABs will not inflate. To decrease the risk of injury from an inflating AB, always wear seatbelts, sit upright in the middle of the seat as far back as possible and do not lean against the door. Do not put objects in front of an AB or around the seatback. Do not use a rearward-facing child seat in any front passenger seat. The force of an inflating AB may cause serious injury or death.
