Top Venza Advantages Over Crosstour

In 2010, Honda introduced the Crosstour, a variation on the highly popular Accord theme. Its objective was to retain the look and feel of a midsize sedan while integrating a rear hatch for easier access to an expanded cargo area. The Crosstour received a mixed response in its debut year. But given the Accord pedigree, it should still be considered a formidable competitor in 2012.

Still, Venza offers customers numerous advantages over Crosstour, as documented by this Edge.

Venza’s smaller footprint translates into a tighter turning circle. That makes Venza easier to drive when space is at a premium, such as when parking or negotiating heavy traffic.

Venza’s sequential shift transmission is more sophisticated than Crosstour’s. And it has more gears, including a lower first gear, a higher overdrive and more closely spaced gears in between. This contributes to greater engine control, more driving involvement and better overall performance.

Highlander

CArGO friendly more room for big items

Whether the rear seat is up or folded down, Venza offers more room for cargo than Crosstour. One reason why: Honda’s choice of a double-wishbone rear suspension significantly narrows the cargo space at the wheel wells, making it more difficult to accommodate wide items.

more options for small items

Toyota’s engineers found a way to mount the transmission shifter in the dashboard rather than between the front bucket seats. This opens up space for an extra-large 14.7-liter center console that Crosstour can’t match. Among other design innovations, the console integrates a wire- management system for cell phones and MP3 players.

Lower mSrP

Though Venza boasts a generous list of standard features, its base price is lower than Crosstour’s. This saves customers money at the point of purchase.

Longer-lasting timing chain

Venza’s V6 engine uses a timing chain designed to last the life of its engine. Crosstour’s timing belt must be replaced after 90,000 miles—a significant maintenance expense.

Venza Crosstourmore choice in roof storage

Venza customers can go with the standard roofline with roof rails or choose between the available roof rack and panoramic glass roof with power moonroof. The roof rails can carry up to 45 pounds with the weight evenly distributed across the rails and not directly on the roof. Crosstour customers have no choice: It comes standard with a moonroof. This further extends Venza’s cargo-carrying advantage on Crosstour.

Venza Crosstour

better fuel economy

Based on EPA estimates, a V6-powered Venza goes further on a gallon of gas in city driving than Crosstour. The choice of a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine only increases Venza’s advantage on this front. Either way, Venza owners can potentially save money over the life of the vehicle.
