Driving assist systems

To help enhance driving safety and performance, the following sys-tems operate automatically in response to various driving situations.Be aware, however, that these systems are supplementary andshould not be relied upon too heavily when operating the vehicle.

■ ABS (Anti-lock Brake System)Helps to prevent wheel lock when the brakes are applied suddenly, or ifthe brakes are applied while driving on a slippery road surface.

■ Brake assistGenerates an increased level of braking force after the brake pedal isdepressed when the system detects a panic stop situation.

■ Enhanced VSC (Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control)Provides cooperative control of the ABS, TRAC, VSC and EPS.Helps to maintain directional stability when swerving on slippery roadsurfaces by controlling steering performance.

■ TRAC (Traction Control)Helps to maintain drive power and prevent the front wheels (2WD mod-els) or four wheels (4WD models) from spinning when starting the vehi-cle or accelerating on slippery roads.

■ Hill-start assist control→P. 228

■ Downhill assist control system (4WD models only)→P. 230

■ EPS (Electric Power Steering)Employs an electric motor to reduce the amount of effort needed to turnthe steering wheel.

When the Enhanced VSC/TRAC systems are operating

If the vehicle is in danger of slip-ping, rolling backwards whenstarting on an incline, or the frontwheels (2WD models) or fourwheels (4WD models) spin, theindicator flashes to indicate thatthe Enhanced VSC/TRAC sys-tems have been engaged.

To disable TRAC and/or Enhanced VSC

If the vehicle gets stuck in fresh snow or mud, TRAC and EnhancedVSC may reduce power from the engine to the wheels. You mayneed to turn the system off to enable you to rock the vehicle in orderto free it.

■ Turning off TRACQuickly push and release thebutton to turn off TRAC.

The “TRAC OFF” indicator lightshould come on.

Push the button again to turn thesystem back on.

■Sounds and vibrations caused by the ABS, TRAC, Enhanced VSC andbrake assist●A sound may be heard from the engine compartment when the engine is

started or just after the vehicle begins to move. This sound does not indi-cate that a malfunction has occurred in any of these systems.

●Any of the following conditions may occur when the above systems areoperating. None of these indicates that a malfunction has occurred.

• Vibrations may be felt through the vehicle body and steering.• A motor sound may be heard after the vehicle comes to a stop.• The brake pedal may pulsate slightly when the ABS is activated.• The brake pedal may move down slightly after the ABS is activated.

■EPS operation soundWhen the steering wheel operates, a motor sound (whirring sound) may beheard. This does not indicate a malfunction.

■Reduced effectiveness of EPSThe effectiveness of EPS is reduced to prevent the system from overheatingwhen there is frequent steering input over an extended period of time. Thesteering wheel may feel heavy as a result. Should this occur, refrain fromexcessive steering input or stop the vehicle and turn the engine off. The sys-tem should return to normal within 10 minutes.

■ If the slip indicator comes on...It may indicate a malfunction in the Enhanced VSC and TRAC. Contact yourToyota dealer.

CAUTION

■The ABS does not operate effectively when●Tires with inadequate gripping ability are used (such as excessively worn

tires on a snow covered road).

●The vehicle hydroplanes while driving at high speed on wet or slick road.

When driving

CAUTION

■Stopping distance when the ABS is operating may exceed that of nor-mal conditionsThe ABS is not designed to shorten the vehicle's stopping distance. Alwaysmaintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you in the following situ-ations.

●When driving on dirt, gravel or snow-covered roads

●When driving with tire chains

●When driving over bumps in the road

●When driving over roads with potholes or uneven roads

■TRAC may not operate effectively whenDirectional control and power may not be achievable while driving on slip-pery road surfaces even if the TRAC system is operating.Do not drive the vehicle in conditions where stability and power may be lost.

■When the Enhanced VSC is activatedThe slip indicator light flashes. Always drive carefully. Reckless driving maycause an accident. Exercise particular care when the indicator light flashes.

■When TRAC and Enhanced VSC are offBe especially careful and drive at a speed appropriate to the road condi-tions. As these are systems to help ensure vehicle stability and driving force,do not turn off TRAC and Enhanced VSC unless necessary.

■Replacing tiresMake sure that all tires are of the same size, brand, tread pattern and totalload capacity. In addition, make sure that the tires are inflated to the appro-priate tire pressure level.

The ABS and Enhanced VSC systems will not function correctly if differenttires are fitted on the vehicle.

Contact your Toyota dealer for further information when replacing tires orwheels.

■Handling of tires and suspensionUsing tires with any kind of problem or modifying the suspension will affectthe driving assist systems, and may cause the system to malfunction.

Hill-start assist control

■Hill-start assist control operating conditionsThe system operates in the following situations:

• The shift lever is in a position other than P.• The parking brake is not applied.• The accelerator pedal is not depressed.

■Hill-start assist control●While hill-start assist control is operating, the brakes remain automati-

cally applied after the driver releases the brake pedal. The stop lights andthe high mounted stoplight turn on.

●Hill-start assist control operates for about 2 seconds after the brake pedalis released.

● If the slip indicator does not flash and the buzzer does not sound whenthe brake pedal is further depressed, slightly reduce the pressure on thebrake pedal (do not allow the vehicle to roll backward) and then firmlydepress it again. If the system still does not operate, check that the oper-ating conditions explained above have been met.

Hill-start assist control helps to prevent the vehicle from rollingbackwards when starting on an incline or slippery slope.

To engage hill-start assist con-trol, further depress the brakepedal when the vehicle isstopped completely.

A buzzer will sound once toindicate the system is acti-vated. The slip indicator willalso start flashing.

When driving

■Hill-start assist control buzzer●When hill-start assist control is activated, the buzzer will sound once.

● In the following situations, hill-start assist control will be canceled and thebuzzer will sound twice.

• No attempt is made to drive the vehicle within approximately 2 secondsof releasing the brake pedal.

• The shift lever is moved to P.• The parking brake is applied.• The brake pedal is depressed again.• The brake pedal has been depressed for more than approximately 3

minutes.

■ If the slip indicator comes on...It may indicate a malfunction in the system. Contact your Toyota dealer.

CAUTION

■Hill-start assist control●Do not overly rely on hill-start assist control. Hill-start assist control may

not operate effectively on extremely steep inclines or roads covered in ice.

●Unlike the parking brake, hill-start assist control is not intended to hold thevehicle stationary for an extended period of time. Do not attempt to usehill-start assist control to hold the vehicle on an incline for an extendedperiod of time, as doing so may lead to an accident.

■Conditions in which the downhill assist control system does not oper-ate● In the following situations, the downhill assist control system indicator

flashes and the downhill assist control system does not operate or willstop operating:

• The shift lever is not in “1” range of S mode or R.• The vehicle speed is higher than 15 mph (25 km/h).

● If the accelerator or brake pedal is depressed, the downhill assist controlsystem will stop operating with the downhill assist control system indica-tor still on.

■ If the “DAC” switch is turned off during operation of the downhill assistcontrol systemThe downhill assist control system gradually ceases operation. The downhillassist control system indicator will flash during the canceling operation, andthen go off when the system is fully off.

■Downhill assist control system operation sound●A sound may be heard from the engine compartment during operation of

the downhill assist control system. This sound does not indicate a mal-function.

● If the accelerator or brake pedal is depressed during operation of thedownhill assist control system, a sound caused by the release of systemoperation may be heard, or you may feel the brake pedal push-back. Thisdoes not indicate a malfunction.

■When the downhill assist control system operates continuouslyThe brake actuator may overheat. In that case, the downhill assist controlsystem will stop operating, a buzzer will sound and the downhill assist con-trol system indicator will start flashing. Refrain from using the system untilthe downhill assist control system indicator stays on. (There is no problemwith continuing to drive normally.)

■ If the slip indicator comes on...It may indicate a malfunction in the system. Contact your Toyota dealer.
