2012 is full of Great Expectations for Britain and it’s a theme we have whole heartedly embraced at the festival The 200th birthday of charles Dickens, 60 years of the Queen’s reign, the 10th anniversary of our Theakstons crime Writing festival and our 47th annual summer festival.

The Arts have taken some hard knocks in these austere times. Our gritty northern spirit made us even more determined and innovative to maintain the festival’s reputation for delivering the Best to Britain – from the finest international musicians to the biggest authors at work today. it’s a chance to experience the world’s finest on Yorkshire’s glorious doorstep, so expect the very best in classical, orchestral and contemporary music with highlights including the John Wilson Orchestra in dazzling Technicolor, multi-award winning Bellowhead, alongside a spectacular debut from cellist Pavel Gomziakov and learning more from the man behind the music Nile rodgers.

Our special guest curators, ensure we celebrate the best of the established and push the boundaries of the new and unexpected. This year, our literary curator Henry sutton welcomes a host of authors & speakers including Michael Frayn, sue townsend and BBc Radio 3’s tom service, whilst jazz award winning artist Dennis rollins programmes a feast of concerts that characterise his own personal musical journey.

This year, the festival spiegeltent returns for two whole weeks on crescent Gardens playing host to Ellen and the Escapades, author James Forrester, Benoit Viellefon and Eliza carthy in one of the world’s most unique venues. The spiegeltent also plays host to our growing children’s Festival where you can meet a viking warrior, have a go at animation, or learn more about the science of biology with The Gross show!

There’ll also be the usual festive frolics frothing around the edges of the main event as the fringe gets bigger and buzzier, whilst for those who can’t bear to be dragged away from the box (even for the world’s most inspirational musicians and writers) the Big screen - a giant movie screen on montpellier Hill – makes a welcome return.

Glastonbury may be cancelled this year, but it’s literary festivals that rock! All the cool cats have kindles. Harrogate’s literature festival comes into its own in 2012 with internationally acclaimed authors in an exciting line-up destined to provoke, inspire and ignite imaginations. Delve into a Greek Odyssey with bestseller victoria Hislop, have great expectations for Dickens’ biographer, claire Tomalin and meet one of our most iconic British authors in the flesh, sue Townsend. (And we have decent toilets.)

sPiEGElWHAT? A spiegeltent is an old European tradition of a large travelling tent that allowed entertainers to take their shows on the road. constructed from wood, canvas and decorated with mirrors and stained glass, the tents are rare survivors of history.

The magic of the mirrored tent will shroud the town for even longer in 2012 with a two week-long residency. Who’s the prettiest venue of them all? The spiegeltent of course. see pages 26 & 27 for a taste of the programme

hENry suTTON, litErary Curatorcharles Dickens pretty much invented the author tour. His public readings were sell-outs here and in the states. so it’s perhaps more than fitting that in the bicentenary of his birth we’ve not only assembled a brilliantly diverse cast of fascinating authors, all deserving of huge audiences, but have in our line-up Dickens’ most current and successful biographer, claire Tomalin. But as Dickens’ genius recognised, great literature is about life, in every form, period, style and subject matter. indeed literature is synonymous with life well explored. With also the help of victoria Hislop, michael frayn, Jon mcGregor, John O’farrell, kate summerscale, sue Townsend, sarah Raven and nile Rodgers, we cross continents and periods, moods, manners and means. We shift from the public to the highly personal, from Hard Times to Good Times, not forgetting either the kitchen or the garden.

sustenance, then, might be the one word most fitting all: how to live, the phrase most apt. Henry sutton is a critic and author. His new novel, My Criminal World, will be published by Harvill secker in spring 2013. He is also the Books Editor of the Daily Mirror and teaches creative Writing at uEA.

BBc newsreader sophie Raworth will be appearing as part of Harrogate international festivals’ 2012 Raworths literature and lecture series. 2012 is a year full of great expectations and, as the whole of Britain prepares for a summer of celebration, the festival is delighted to have the opportunity to gain an insight into the world behind the headlines. As Raworths solicitors celebrates 125 years of business, the firms founder’s great-granddaughter will help celebrate this anniversary, draw on the family history in Harrogate and answer questions on her experiences and impressive career in national television.

dENNis rOLLiNs, GuEst jazz CuratorWhen i was approached to be guest-director of the prestigious Harrogate festival not only was i thrilled and honoured, but the prospect of being given free rein in choosing a theme was irresistible.

i decided to draw upon the many and varied influences that have characterised my personal musical journey. i believe growing up in Yorkshire as a child of Jamaican immigrants has given me a unique perspective, and my 27-year career, underpinned by the discipline of my early days performing in the colliery brass bands, has also been enriched by many fortunate opportunities to perform with some of the world’s greatest musicians and learn from a myriad of styles and cultures along the way.

The result, Griots t’ Garage – A musical History of The African Diaspora, is a story that begins with musical soundscapes representing the era from pre-slavery 1600s, following a musical timeline through the call and response field songs to the blues, jazz, soul, reggae, funk , latin, hip-hop and ending in the late1990s style of Garage music. GTG forms the centre-piece of my programming, which also features jazz dance from Perry louis, steel pan from samuel Dubois, Afro-Brazilian percussion from claudio kron, a classical brass performance by YouTuba and screen showing of the BBc film Adaptation of the novel small island.

The grand Opening night in Harrogate’s grandest of halls offers a sumptuous evening with the sounds of pianist noriko Ogawa and the manchester camerata.

Opening with Webern’s uncharacteristically lush early Langsamer Satz (Slow Movement), Adi Brett leads the orchestra through a thrilling string programme, promising an inspirational night to remember with the signature creativity and energy of camerata’s work combined with Ogawa’s ‘ravishingly poetic playing’ (Telegraph) as she joins the orchestra in mozart’s Piano concerto.

With a reputation for bringing audiences first-class performances which are bursting with vitality, manchester camerata is truly a product of its creative environment - a twenty first century orchestra in one of the most exciting cities in the world. Becoming a mother in 1990 was the catalyst for a career change and she started work as a freelance journalist. she branched into travel journalism before becoming a novelist.

Embracing a Greek backdrop, The Island held the number one slot in the sunday Times paperback charts for eight consecutive weeks and has sold over two million copies worldwide. Her second novel, The Return, was also a sunday Times bestseller, and her books have been translated into more than 20 languages. The Thread is the third and latest of her Greek odysseys.

A frequent recitalist, 25 year old pianist Jessica Wei Zhu is already no stranger to huge internationally renowned stages such as st martin-in-the-fields and the Purcell Room the southbank centre, working with the likes of Pascal Roge, Angela Hewitt and stanislav loudenich in festivals all over the world. she now takes her place in the Harrogate international festival Young musician series, performing in partnership with live music now.

Wind Quintet, souza Winds, were formed in 2005 whilst all members were studying at the Royal northern college of music. since then they have established themselves in the landscape of contemporary music, working with and commissioning new works from a wide range of composers, as well as each of them forging a name for themselves with orchestra such as the Halle, BBc Philharmonic, Royal liverpool Philharmonic and manchester camerata. The quintet bring a fantastic programme including works by ibert, Holst and mozart to the Young musicians stage this year, in partnership with live music now.

celebrating the 150th anniversary of claude Debussy, Rêverie is the fourth biographical programme of composers’ words and music to be compiled and scripted by concert pianist lucy Parham. A crucial element of Debussy’s complex intellectual and emotional world was an entangled love life that brought illicit trysts in Jersey, a brush with a revolver and even a suicide attempt.

One of the most prolific and innovative composers of the early 20th century, claude Debussy absorbed and transformed cultural influences from countries as far apart as scotland (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair), Japan (Poissons d’Or) and the UsA (Golliwog’s Cake Walk).

The narrative of Rêverie, which takes the form of a personal journal, follows him from his initial success with the Prix de Rome in 1885 to his untimely death in 1918. it is punctuated with solo piano works ranging from the ever-popular lyricism of Clair de Lune, Rêverie, 1st Arabesque, and The Girl with the Flaxen Hair to such virtuosic showpieces as Jardins sous la Pluie, Etudes and L’isle Joyeuse.

A headline act for the festival, Divine comedy were considered to be the more ‘dignified geniuses at the back of the class’ at the time when Blur and Oasis battled it out for Britpop. The dandy delivery and baroque pop of neil Hannon has put him on the same music agenda as Jarvis cocker and Damon Albarn, earning him the title of “the noël coward of Britpop”.

i could not be more thrilled to be chairing the programming committee again for the tenth Theakstons Old Peculier crime Writing festival; now the biggest and best of its kind anywhere in the world. This is of course fantastic, but gives me a lot to live up to! i’m confident that this year we have put together a programme to make any crime fiction lover salivate like Hannibal lecter at a plateful of braised banker. from those who like their crime cosy as crumpets, to those who prefer meat that is a little bloodier, there is a feast for everyone. so, tuck in…

Variations for Judith is a set of 11 short variations on Bach’s ‘Bist du bei mir’ from Anna magdalena’s notebooks by composers including Judith Weir, Jonathan Dove, Richard Rodney Bennett, Thea musgrave, and Peter maxwell Davies, written for Judith serota, spitalfields music’s Executive Director from 1988–2007. The variations encompass a huge variety of moods: some are quirky and humorous, others more sombre and paying tribute to the choral writing of Bach, and are played amidst a programme of some of the greatest pieces in the pianoforte repertoire. Alongside these modern day reflections, Tan also presents the work of arguably the best composers for piano spanning the last four centuries, with music from Bach’s first keyboard suites, through to two giants of the Romantic period with schumann and chopin. This fantastic programme exhibits a musician with worldwide acclaim as a leading exponent of the fortepiano.

she is the author of one of the most successful characters in Britain’s modern literary history. Thirty years after writing the iconic first Adrian mole book, sue Townsend is one of Britain’s most popular novelists. Her work is characterised by the combination of comedy with social commentary.

Her father was a postman, she left school at 15 and after working in a factory and shop and married a sheet-metal worker and began a family. After joining a writers’ group in her thirties, her life changed. Townsend has had a difficult relationship with success.
