Dr. Gardner Ackley, Western Michigan ’36, is a member of President Kennedy’s three-man council of Economic Advisers. He received the appointment in a personal call from the President last year while in Rome for a nine-month study of the Italian economy under a Ford Foundation faculty research fellowship.

Dr. Ackley, chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of Michigan, previously served in Washington in the Office of Price Administration and the Office of Price Stabilization. He has published a number of articles in English and Italian in the field of economics. His former OPS chief, Governor Michael DiSalle of Ohio, calls him a “shorthaired economist, the kind who can translate economic terms into laymen’s language.”

Graduated and Clueless: You Think You Know What’s Coming –

If you could do anything to guarantee success and fulfillment in your life after college, what would you do? This question has been running through my mind since my own graduation from Beta Chapter at Truman State University in 2007. For years I flailed all over the country, in and out of terrible entry-level jobs, trying to make sense of who I was and what I wanted to do with my life. In fact, my challenges, successes, frustrations, and breakthroughs prompted me to share my thoughts with the world. I started a blog and wrote a book, both appropriately named “Graduated and Clueless.”

Since I finished the manuscript for the book, I have continued to invest hundreds of hours into answering basic, yet all-to-important, questions about how a recent college grad could overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in the feared real world. Fortunately, I have stumbled upon numerous success strategies, all of which work wonders when applied diligently.

These success strategies will lead you to greater opportunity and achievement in every area of life, from finances, insurance, and careers to family, health, and spirituality. Let’s be clear, what I’m talking about is not related to your college degree. Diplomas look pretty in frames, but your best shot at a fulfilling and successful life has little or nothing to do with the letters after your name - it has everything to do with personal development.

Phi Chapter Shows Strength of True Brotherhood By David Komoroski, Delta Pi ’11 (University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown)

I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the brothers of Phi Chapter at Southeastern Louisiana University for their incredible display of hospitality and generosity. Recently, I was selected to serve a 10-month AmeriCorps term with St. Bernard Project, a non-profit homebuilder that began in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. I left home with only a pickup truck full of belongings and the phone number of Phi Chapter’s then president, Mark Mauer. During my 1,200-mile journey, I camped at state parks and rest stops before making my way to Hammond, La., just an hour outside of New Orleans. Having never been to that part of the country before, I had hoped to stay with Phi Chapter for a night and arrange for a temporary hotel stay in the city on the next night.

Upon my arrival, the brothers of the Phi Chapter not only welcomed this disheveled stranger into their house, but also paid for my meals, arranged for a much-needed shower, and introduced me to a Phi alumni-owned tavern called the Crescent. Plans to stay for one night turned into two, and then three. My apprehensions about a new job in a new city were eased. Several brothers offered up their own houses and apartments as potential residences. One even called his parents in expectation of my arrival. And in a matter of hours, complete strangers became trusted friends.

I left Southeastern Louisiana University with many new friends and a full belly. It can’t be stated how much the latter was appreciated. When I arrived in New Orleans, I told my coworkers about my travels. They chalked it up to that storied Southern hospitality, but I have my own theory. What I experienced during those three days was the truest example of Brotherhood. To Mark Mauer and the brothers of Phi Chapter, you have my utmost respect and fraternal love. I hope to visit again soon. But this time, I’ll bring the crawfish.

Chapters Compete in Second Annual Snow Bowl Football GameThe Delta Phi Chapter of Fitchburg State University and the Epsilon Delta Chapter of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell came together on a snowy Saturday in January to compete in the Second Annual Snow Bowl Football Game. This year, Delta Phi took the win. 4

Delta Pi (University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown)Three Delta Pi Brothers worked in collaboration with Westmont Hilltop High School to raise funds for the Conemaugh Health Foundation. Brother Matt Ziance, CSM, Delta Pi ’13 and alumnus of Westmont Hilltop, designed a logo and shirts for the high school’s basketball game on Feb. 15. The game was named the “JYF Classic” and the shirts raised money that was donated to the foundation in the name of Jacqueline Young-Flack, who was a coach at Westmont Hilltop.

Brothers Bill Rush, Delta Pi ’12, and David Fiumara, Delta Pi ’14, helped raise money at the game by selling 50/50 raffle tickets. The brothers also were assisted by the high school’s senior basketball players, Brittany Davis and Gina Rievel, who worked on the fundraiser as their senior project, which is required to graduate from Westmont Hilltop. The fundraiser ended up raising more than $1,000. 3

Alpha Phi (Southeast Missouri State University)The Alpha Phi Chapter helped host the 2012 Polar Plunge in Cape Girardeau, Mo. to raise money for Special Olympics. The event consisted of teams gathering donations for plunging into a freezing cold lake on Feb. 4.

Alpha Phi members raised $670 and provided more than 20 volunteers for the event. In addition to the money and help Alpha Phi provided, the men established a relationship with the Special Olympics coordinators in the area and have plans to help with events throughout the semester. 5

Epsilon Lambda (SUNY Plattsburgh)On Feb. 24, Plattsburgh, N.Y. was hit with a sudden snowstorm. The men of Epsilon Lambda helped clear nearly 1.5 miles of sidewalk for the city. 1

Brother Basil Hunt fulfilled a lifelong commitment to education, leadership, and serving Sigma Tau Gamma and others. He was a tremendous influence and role model to generations of Sig Taus and the students he taught during his 40-year career as an educator and administrator. He joined the Chapter Eternal on March 5, 2012 at the age of 80.

Basil was born on May 2, 1931 in Unionville, Mo. He was dedicated to education from the start, earning enough college credit before graduating from high school to teach in a country school for two years. In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and earned the rank of Airman First Class. After receiving his discharge in December 1955 to begin his studies, he enrolled at Northeast Missouri State College (now Truman State University) at the age of 24. He continued to serve as a member of the Air Force Reserves for 12 years.

Basil joined Sig Tau and was immediately elected to leadership roles. He served Beta Chapter as scholarship chairman and

assistant campaign manager. He was also editor of his college yearbook and was awarded the first graduate assistantship ever given at his college in the education department.

Basil once said, “I have an abiding interest in assisting people in achieving their individual goals, in helping people learn what it is they need to know to get where they’re going.” This is what Basil truly did.

For more than six decades, Basil dedicated himself to Sigma Tau Gamma and advancing the Fraternity in many ways. He was our 16th national president from 1970-72. During his tenure, the Marvin Millsap Headquarters Building was constructed as Sig Tau’s national Headquarters in Warrensburg, Mo. He served on the Board of Directors from 1964-76, and again in 1988 to fill a vacancy. Basil was on the Foundation Board of Trustees and was the third Foundation president from 1976-80. He also completed two terms on the Board of Directors of the NIC (North-American

Interfraternity Conference) from 1982-86, after representing Sig Tau as a delegate for two years.

His professional career was spent in elementary school administration, serving as principal of several Missouri schools, director of elementary education for the Normandy School District and president of the St. Louis Suburban Elementary Principals Association.

Basil is survived by his wife and daughter. He married Pat Roberts, a Delta Zeta from Northeast Missouri, in the summer of 1959. Their daughter, Kimberly, was born in April 1960. Pat and Kim have an “incredible love for the man of the family” and Basil cherished them most in the world.

In 1988, Basil was awarded the D. Kenneth Winebrenner Distinguished Service Medal for his extraordinary service as an alumni leader of Sigma Tau Gamma. He was also an original inductee into the Society of the Seventeen and a member of the Wilson C. Morris Fellowship.

Basil Hunt

Basil Hunt was a first quality individual and a treasured fraternity brother. No one was more personable, caring and dependable. His abiding concern for the welfare of the fraternity was unexcelled.

Basil was the personification of a model fraternity member. Sigma Tau Gamma will remain indebted to him as a builder and a devoted brother. We will also miss his infectious smile and undying devotion.

Men join a collegiate fraternity for a number of reasons and with graduation, most move on with their lives with little thought of continued service on a national level. Not Basil. For more than six decades, he never wavered in his commitment to Sigma Tau Gamma. As a result, he achieved iconic status within a 90-year-old organization located on more than a hundred campuses nationwide and his influence on generations of young men was pervasive.

To his core, Basil was a people person who truly never met a stranger. He welcomed the thoughts of others, was kind and caring toward them, and always willing to lend a hand or an ear to someone in need. He was generous to a fault and always had time for a friend or member of his family.

Basil was more than a brother to me. He was my mentor, my advisor, and sometimes my conscience, in all things Sigma Tau Gamma. I met Basil in the late 1960s and spent time with him at every national meeting I attended since then, until he was no longer able to attend. When I was elected to the Fraternity board in the 1980s, we served together a brief time, but talked often over the years I was on the board ... about whatever controversy was brewing at the time, about the state of the fraternity, and about family. His biggest piece of advice about serving on the board was to know and practice the ideal that the board makes policy, the staff is to carry out policy, and the board should not manage the fraternity. I believed that and practiced it throughout my years on the board.

We served together for many years on the Foundation board and his advice and practice was the same. He knew from his experience as a top educator what it was like to work for a board and knew that for the staff to be effective it must be allowed to manage without board interference.

Basil was always the best-dressed person in the room, whether it was casual, business casual or formal. When he came into a room, his presence made it friendlier and more welcoming. His laugh was infectious.

After he retired from his assistant superintendent position with the Normandy public schools in St. Louis, he worked at a top men’s clothing store, perfect for him because he loved to look great, and always did. He also worked in retirement for the Internal Revenue Service, and I’m sure he made it a friendlier place than we could imagine.

Basil dearly loved his wife, his daughter and Sigma Tau Gamma. He lived and displayed high morals, compassion and integrity. Being able to call him “brother” was, and is, my honor. I miss him so much.

More than 50 Presidents Attend Webb AcademyThanks to your support, more than 50 chapter presidents from around the country were given the opportunity to visit the birthplace of Sig Tau in Warrensburg, Mo. for the Earl A. Webb Academy of Principled Leaders. Most of the cost of travel, lodging, meals and programming for this event is paid for by a grant from the Foundation, so that no chapter president, regardless of financial circumstances, is denied this valuable experience.

The Webb Academy is an annual symposium for new chapter presidents to help them develop leadership skills to be successful in their office, while exploring the heritage of the Fraternity and enjoying a variety of brotherhood events.

Development Counselor, Josh Floyd, Begins Journey of Assisting ChaptersSigma Tau Gamma is committed to servicing our existing chapters to help them grow and succeed, while expanding the brotherhood of Sig Tau to more campuses. The Headquarters staff was fortunate to add Josh Floyd as the new development counselor. This addition brings the staff total that serves chapters on site to six! Josh’s services would not be possible without support to the Foundation.

Enhancement of the Total Communication PackageThe Foundation supports the Fraternity’s primary communication links including the SAGA and www.sigmataugamma.org. Donations supplement basic Fraternity dues making these links possible. It also allows the staff to communicate with higher performance through multiple traditional and digital channels.

Sigma Tau Gamma hosts a variety of social media sites, updates news and blogs weekly, manages an online live chat feature that provides direct contact with staff members, and publishes the monthly Path of Principles Chronicle email newsletter, among other communication strategies.

Scholarships Improve Retention and Academic AchievementThrough Chapter Heritage Funds, individual chapters are able to provide academic scholarships to collegiate members for tuition, books and campus fees. The Foundation also promotes scholastic success through the Roskens Scholar Program, which recognizes all collegiate members who maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. Roskens Scholars receive T-shirts and certificates to serve as examples to others to improve their academic situations.

Understanding the Wilson C. Morris Fellowship

Created in 1980 at the 29th Grand Chapter, the Wilson C. Morris Fellowship (WCMF) commemorates the Fraternity’s first chapter advisor. Because of Dr. Morris’ tremendous influence upon the Fraternity and its founding, he is recognized as the eighteenth founder and served as the Fraternity’s advisor for the rest of his life, until his death in 1947.

The Fellowship recognizes cumulative lifetime giving levels to the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation. Individuals can qualify to become a WCMF by donating $1,000 within four years to the Foundation. From that point forward, all donations count toward the person’s cumulative giving recognitions. WCMF Cumulative Donor Recognition levels are as follows:

Delta Chapter (Emporia State University) In January, the Delta Chapter celebrated 90 years of brotherhood at Emporia State University. Alumni, collegiate members, university officials, Headquarters staff and other guests gathered for a dinner at the Delta Chapter house and shared memories of the oldest fraternity on the ESU campus.

Chuck Hanna, Delta ’50 and one of the chapter’s oldest members, shared his 1948 yearbook at the gathering. The evening concluded with the Delta Chapter presenting a $1,300 donation to ESU President Michael Shonrock for the ESU Foundation to fund scholarships.

Delta Chapter was chartered on Jan. 20, 1922 from the petitioning society of Beta Alpha Tau, which was founded as Alpha Sigma Alpha in 1916. Delta is hosting its 90th anniversary reunion this April.

Gary Shank, Beta Epsilon ’67 (Shippensburg University), reached his 500th win as the swim coach of Carlisle High School in February. Shank has been the coach since the swim program began at Carlisle and has the most wins of any active coach in the Mid-Penn conference.

Shank is a retired teacher, but continues to coach as he has for the past 33 years. During his collegiate days, he was the president of the Beta Epsilon Chapter.

Thomas (Dubbs) Williams, Beta Kappa ’04 (University of Wisconsin-La Crosse), is proud to announce the birth of his daughter, Olivia Marie, on Nov. 28, 2011 in Las Vegas.

Brian G. Wilham, Gamma Psi ’83 (Illinois State University), was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant within the Illinois State Police in December 2011. He is serving as the Specialty Unit Supervisor for the Crime Scene Services Command. Brother Wilham began his career with the Illinois State Police in 1995.

Alpha Phi Prepares for 60th Anniversary in OctoberThe Alpha Phi Chapter at Southeast Missouri State University is planning to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its founding with a reunion on Oct. 5-7.

“The weekend will include activities for collegiate and alumni members and spouses or guests,” said Thomas Wood, DMF, Alpha Phi ’66. “Plans include a reception on campus Friday night, campus tours on Saturday and a banquet on Saturday night with several of the chapter’s Founding Fathers expected to attend.”

Invitations for this reunion will be sent in early summer, but alumni can check the chapter’s website for more information at www6.semo.edu/sigtau. An alumni committee is working with the collegiate chapter to finalize the weekend’s plans. The Alpha Phi Chapter was the first national fraternity recognized on its campus. It was chartered on Dec. 6, 1952.

White Rose Heritage Courtyard Bricks Now Available with Renewed InterestLocated on the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity Headquarters campus in Warrensburg, Mo. is the White Rose Pavilion and Courtyard. The White Rose Courtyard pathways feature commemorative engraved bricks.

In 2001, the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation incorporated engraved recognition products into its fundraising campaign. During this time, many members purchased the engraved bricks for themselves, a relative or a fraternity brother. Sweetheart bricks for wives, mothers, sisters and significant others also line the pathways. Because of the renewed interest in the White Rose Heritage Courtyard Brick Program, the Foundation decided to bring it back beginning December 2011.

You can once again claim your place in the White Rose Courtyard by filling out the Brick by Brick order form, which is available on our website, then mail it back to Headquarters or email it directly to LeAnn Bylo, development officer, at [email protected] with a gift to the Foundation of $175. You can also place your order over the phone by calling the Headquarters at 660-747-2222. Proceeds from the bricks assist this project as well as help fund other Sig Tau leadership and citizenship programs.

Bricks are inscribed with the individual’s name, chapter and initiation year. Sweetheart bricks feature a silhouette of a white rose and the individual’s name. In addition to securing your place along the courtyard pathway, you will receive a color rendering of the inscribed brick in a walnut-stained frame that is equipped with an easel back for display on a wall or shelf. These make great gifts, especially for birthdays or graduating seniors, as well as serve as memorials for those we have lost but not forgotten.
