2012 RALLY DATES
19th February 25th March
29th April 27th May
DC REPORT
Well we finally got a rally without rain. But due to it being so hot we still had to finish at lunchtime.
We still had a great day with Michelle Strapp, Fiona and Steph. Unfortunately though we have lost
Steph due to her last year at Uni, she is not doing any teaching for the year and she will surely be missed.
We finally had the chance to use some of our new jumps which l think were very appreciated. Our next rally will be at Officer which will be exciting. They have an indoor arena and a small cross
country course there which will be good for those out competing.
Due to not being at our grounds you will need to bring your own lunch and drinks for the day. They
do have coffee and tea facilities there for those needing their caffeine fix.
I would like to congratulate Donna Ford on her great success and the Summer Royal taking out First Place in the Special Pony Club Event, well done.
Our March rally will also be our AGM and also my last rally, Alysha and myself are stepping down as we have been with the club for 10 years now and we are mainly competing EFA and Alysha doing
year 12. So if anyone is wanting to help out on the committee please put your hand up as it’s a
great opportunity to get more involved with the club, we need as much help as we can get.
Please remember if you are not coming, can you please let me know ASAP, and also we need to
know numbers for presentation night. It would be good to have you all there as l have organised heaps of games, karaoke and lots more.
Hope to see you all there.

NORMAL COAT AND SKIN
A good coat is a reflection of health.
In summer horses should be sleek-coated and shiny. Dappling is a sign of health, though not all horses have the
genetic ability to ‘dapple up’. In winter they grow an extra coat which is long, thick and rough-looking, but
this is not a sign of ill health. It is normal for great handfuls of this winter coat to fall out in spring as the
weather warms up, in fact it might fall out so rapidly that it leaves temporary bald patches.
Sweating in very hot weather or as the result of exercise is normal, in fact an inability to sweat (anhydrosis) is a
serious health problem. Prevention of this process, e.g. by inappropriate rugging practices, is cruel and
harmful to the long-term health of the horse. Clipping the horse in warm weather and using blankets when it is
cold will make your horse more comfortable.
COAT AND SKIN CONDITIONS – DIFFERENTIAL SIGNS
Hair loss and itching are typical of many skin diseases and can advance to abrasions, open sores, weeping,
cracked, folded and thickened skin. A dull, scurfy, scruffy or lifeless coat is usually associated with systemic
ill health as well as being an indicator of skin disease.
Skin sores (e.g. galls) may be due to external trauma or rubbing from poorly fitting saddles/harness. Hair loss
and abrasions confined to around the head and ears can be due to ear mites or a recent colic attack (horse has
been rolling frequently). Generalised skin lumps or a rash might have an obvious cause like stinging nettles or
insect bites, but can also be the result of systemic illness e.g. feed or medication allergy. Localised white spots
or patches of hair are often the result of past pressure sores or rubbing e.g. old saddle sores, girth galls.
Tail itching is typically associated with Qld itch but can also be caused by pinworms. Biting at the skin (self-
mutilation) for no apparent reason is an uncommon but not unknown stable vice associated with too much
confinement and/or lack of roughage (hay, grass) in the diet.
COMMON SKIN CONDITIONS
Rain scald
Greasy heel
Ringworm
Lice infestation
Tick infestation
Queensland itch
Buffalo fly infestation
Urticaria
Summer sores
Sunburn
Onchocerciasis
Mange
The successful treatment or control of skin conditions is highly dependent on knowing the cause. For example,
there is no point trying to treat Qld itch (due to an insect) with a fungicide, or ringworm (due to a fungus) with
an insecticide, or lice (insects) with an antibacterial product.
