October 18, 2010 - Misericordia University will put its 86-year football unbeaten streak on the line as the Board of Trustees has approved the addition of football as a varsity sport.

The move to add football supports Misericordia’s recently approved strategic plan that calls for thoughtful growth and an increase in the university’s regional acclamation.

“This is an exciting time for the Misericordia University community, in particular the intercollegiate athletics program,” said David Martin, director of athletics. “This is one of the most impactful changes in the history of our institution.”

The 14th sport added since Misericordia joined the NCAA Division III in 1992, football brings MU’s total number of intercollegiate offerings to 23.

“In an ongoing effort to meet the demands of our student-athletes, our athletics program has grown in proportion to the University over the last two decades,” said Martin. “The addition of football will have a significant impact on our entire operation.”

The first order of business is finding a coach as the Cougars prepare for the 2012 season. “We will immediately begin a national search for a head coach,” said Martin. “We hope to have a coach in place by February to begin the recruiting process for 2012.”

While the addition of football has been rumored for at least 20 years, the possibility became more realistic with MU’s transition to the MAC and Freedom Conference in 2008 – the Cougars will become the 10th MAC school to offer football. “Being in a conference that sponsors football certainly added fuel to the football fire on campus,” said Martin. “The change in conference affiliation was one of many factors in our decision.”

The decision also comes in conjunction with the on-going improvements to Misericordia’s athletics facilities. “Our goal has always been to provide our student-athletes with a first-rate experience which includes quality facilities. Our fitness center is relocating to the upper level of the Anderson Center and will more than double in size. The current fitness center will be converted into office space.”

Mangelsdorf Field, the current home for MU’s soccer, field hockey and lacrosse teams, will also undergo a facelift. In addition to the 10-year-old turf being replaced, the complex will see increased seating capacity and a field house/press box. “These are major upgrades which will have a positive impact on a larger percentage of our student-athletes as well as visiting teams.”

McGeehan Field, the previous varsity soccer field, will be converted to artificial grass and a new on-campus baseball field will also be contstructed.

DR. MICHAEL MacdoWellUniversity President

Dr. Michael A. MacDowell is in his 15th year as president of Misericordia University.

The 12th president in the history of Misericordia, he will retire June 30, 2013.

MacDowell has led the Misericordia into the top tier of the Best Regional Universities North category of U.S. News and World’s Report’s annual edition of Best Colleges, and successfully managed its evolution from a college to a university.

Since his arrival in July 1998 from Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., MacDowell has overseen a remarkable and continuous rise in traditional and non-traditional student enrollment, student quality and the transformation of Misericordia’s upper and lower campuses.

In athletics, MacDowell spearheaded MU’s transition to the Middle Atlantic Conference/Freedom Conference in 2008 and the addition of varsity football in 2012.The University has also seen the construction of Metz Fieldhouse, Tambur Field (baseball) and the renovation of McGeehan Field.

Michael and Tina MacDowell Hall, a 118-bed facility, is the newest residence hall on campus and will be open for the 2012-13 school year.

In addition, the Misericordia campus has witnessed the construction and renovations of nine buildings during MacDowell’s tenure.

The University has maintained its momentum in student recruitment as well. When MacDowell arrived in 1998, Misericordia enrolled 1,050 full-time students. By this fall, total full-time enrollment will exceed 1,800. Full-time enrollment this year reached 1,720, while 1,000 additional students were enrolled part time or in graduate studies. Overall, Misericordia’s enrollment was 2,762 for the 2011-12 academic year.

The University also has enrolled increasingly more selective classes — as measured by GPA, SAT scores and other measures of quality. The average GPA and median SAT score for members of the 2011-12 freshman class was 3.33 and 1070, respectively.

Remaining true to the charisms of Misericordia, MacDowell has offered his time and talent to the greater NEPA community and to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He is the past vice chair of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, where he remains on the board. He is the past chair of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Consortium of Colleges and Universities and is a past vice president of the Northeast Pennsylvania Boy Scout Council.

2012 SeaSon Preview

After nearly two years of planning, Misericordia University head football coach Mark Ross is ready to lead the Cougars into their first season of varsity football.

Ross, who has been recruiting and working on logistics since he was hired in January, 2011, will guide the Cougars to Gettysburg for their first game ever, September 1.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to make history,” said Ross. “Our pre-season has gone pretty much as we expected. We have a good group of kids who have been extremely coachable. We’re looking forward to finally do what we came here to do – play football.”

With a roster consisting of predominantly freshmen, Ross and his staff had to tweak their approach during pre-season camp.

“We don’t have upperclassmen for the young guys to lean on, so we’ve had to adapt some of our teaching concepts,” said Ross. “We want to be sure that we present the information in a manner that our younger players can process it.”

According to Ross, the plan has worked well thus far. “There has been a big learning curve for some of the guys, but overall they are picking things up pretty well.”

Ross and his staff have just two requirements for their players every time they step on the field. “We ask them to play hard and fast,” said Ross. “In order for them to do that, we need to make sure that they understand what we expect from them regarding execution.”

According to Ross, a priority for the Cougars is to minimize negative plays. “We need to protect the ball and make good decisions,” he said. “We need to keep our mental errors to a minimum in order to give ourselves a chance to compete.”

On the field, Ross believes the Cougars have some outstanding players at receiver, tight end and running back and he hopes to take advantage of that.

“We have some very good players at the skill positions,” said Ross. “We’re going to try to get the ball in our playmakers hands as much as possible.”

Everything starts at quarterback where there is a three-man race between Chris Washo, Michael Pheasant and Jeff Puckett. “Our quarterbacks have a lot on their plates,” said Ross. “They need to know everything. They all have a similar skill set and they have all shown flashes of brilliance. The biggest thing we’re asking of them is to make smart decisions.”

Also in the backfield, there is good competition at running back between Oluwatosin Adeyemo, Robin Custodio, Benny Delgado and Frank Santarsiero. Transfer Cody Lamoreaux will add depth. “All of the guys are running hard and battling for playing time,” said Ross.

A deep group of wide receivers includes Kurt Kowalski, Paul Brace, Lane Dickey, Shawn Radder, Peter Carissimo, Christian Foley, Aidan Marich, Mike Barber, Shannon Johnson, Tyler Rowe, Collin Shandra, Nick Ciocchi and Corey Wall.

“Receiver is one of our deepest positions,” said Ross. “Brace is very explosive, Johnson has done a nice job and Barber has shown some versatility. We’re pleased with the work this group has done.”

The tight end slot features another three-man battle between Dylan Kluber, Dean Lucchesi and Thomas Stelzer. “We feel that we have three quality players here,” said Ross. “They can all catch the ball and get downfield and they’ve all done a nice job in the blocking scheme.”

Up front, Ross and offensive line coach Chris Gray are trying to figure out the best combination between Joseph Winter, Alec Garrity, Teegan French, Drew Godfrey, Alexander Amodie, James Manzick, Jamie Aldrich, Anthony Torre, Jesse Baker, Trevor Davis, Travis Tobin, Tommy DeMaio, Josh Myers, John Ameen and Connor Duffy.

2012 SeaSon Preview

“We have some good size,” said Ross. “Our biggest challenge at this point is trying to put together the best combination.”

When they have the ball, Ross expects the Cougars to be balanced between run and pass plays. “We plan to establish our run game and use the passing game as an extension of our running game,” said Ross. “We hope to be able to dictate our offensive game plan.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars will utilize a 3-4 alignment and hope to utilize a solid linebacker corp.

Up front, Ben Muschlitz, Frankie Gonzalez, Tyler Grable, Cory Conforth and Dominick Bianchi are all battling for time at nose tackle while Peter Conforti, Omar Clark, Ariel Peguero, Jake Livingston, Greg Zotian and Michael Craig are looking to fill the defensive end roles.

“We are more athletic up front than we are big,” said Ross. “We hope to use that to our advantage.”

Hunter Pates leads a solid group of inside linebackers that also includes Jordan Weber, Jeff Smith, Kurt Gildea, Sean Weg and Dom Picarillo.

At outside linebacker, Angelo Scaffido has impressed along with William Roach, Chris Szabo, Tanner Bulkley, Tim Martin, Michael Miles and Angelo Prince.

“We really like this group of linebackers,” said Ross. “There are some very good players and they all work hard. It’s going to be fun to watch this group develop over the years.”

The secondary features Juwan Petties-Jackson, Ben Camacho, Anthony Buffa, Kevin Bagasevich and Phil Arnold at cornerback and Brandon Salazar, Tyler Hessert and Michael Comerford at safety.

“Our defensive backs are a fun bunch that works very hard,” said Ross. “They are very athletic and this is probably the most competitive area of the team. They are very coachable and improving and gaining confidence every day.”

On special teams, former track & field standout Steve Clemson and Christian Foley are battling for role of kicker while Corey Wall and Phil Arnold are handling the punting chores.

“Our biggest challenge on special teams is consistency,” said Ross. “We work at it every day and try to make sure that we have the right personnel on the field.”

While Ross is preparing his team to win every Saturday, he understands that the first season in Misericordia football history ultimately won’t be measured in wins and losses.

“I’ve never gone into a football game thinking that we didn’t have a chance to win,” said Ross. “We’ll maintain that same approach this year. We’ll prepare to win and expect to win. In the end, we expect our guys to play hard for 60 minutes every week and to show improvement throughout the season.”

The Cougars open the season at Gettysburg, September 1 and will host Widener for their first ever home game, September 15.

MISERICORDIA UNIVERSITY IS D-III

Misericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA’s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation. While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn’t offer – athletics scholarships – it has plenty to offer.Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants develop fully as students, athletes and citizens.Athletics participation at many of the 442 institutions that com-prise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and in athletics. That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extra-curricular activities. In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics and promote academic success. This is evidenced by MU’s overall 3.24 GPA among student-ath-letes and 143 MAC all-academic honorees in 2011-12.While Division III athletics programs promote a wide range of participation, they don’t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA sponsors 36 national championships annually at the Division III level.Misericordia has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in 1992. MU has captured 38 conference cham-pionships and sent 16 teams to the NCAA Championships. In addition, several individual efforts have helped put Misericor-dia on the national map: Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA Division III champion. Willie Chandler, basketball: Second leading scorer in NCAA Division III history. Heather Dougherty, swimming: School’s first NCAA All-American. Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led NCAA Division III in blocks per game. Amy Bower, cross country: All-American; didn’t run competi-tively until college. Frank Redmond, track & field: MU’s first track & field All-American. Kim Daniel, field hockey: Seventh all-time in NCAA Division III in career assists. Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III record for hits in a game.Founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educa-tional Catholic institution serving both residential andcommuting students.Sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18 Mercy institutions in the United States and welcomes individuals from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.MU offers 32 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Scienc-es; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences. The University is dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality. These values are found throughout the University, from programs of study to service projects. The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high-quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum. With 2,830 students, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. Small class size ensures personalized attention and a 12:1 student/faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another.Located in Dallas, PA, MU’s 123-acre campus has a suburban at-mosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES

The athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student-ath-letes with some of the finest competition venues in the region.

The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts.

Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams.

The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/dance studio.

The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses.

Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was con-structed in 2002 and serves as a home for the footbal, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs.

The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU’s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal.

The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home since 1992.

Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson Athletic Complex and Anderson Fields are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University.

Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region.

The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T Foundation.

Tambur Field, honoring the Robert Tambur family, was constructed in 2012 and will provide a new home for the MU baseball team.

McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan ‘46, will open in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams.

In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was construct-ed in 2012 and will provide meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams.

The 21,750 square-foot facility is named for long time board of trustee member John Metz and his wife and recognizes their contributions to the MU community.
