Every year families and friends gather around the

table to celebrate and give thanks for the bounty ofthe year. They also tend to consume 3,000 to 4,500calories per person. Should giving thanks be aboutgluttony?

Many people are interested in lower-fat, lower-calo-rie options forThanksgiving mealsthat dont take awayfrom the traditions ofthe holiday. Its possi-ble to cook and servefoods that are healthi-er and offer the spiritof Thanksgiving. Lets

examine traditionalfare and some alterna-tives that are healthier.Traditional: Turkeyand stuffing.Alternative: Turkeythat has been roastedor cooked on a rotis-serie so that the excessfat drips off. Turkeyitself tends to be lean.

Avoid basting theturkey with butter andremove the skin uponserving. Do not stuffthe turkey with breaddressing, which tendsto be fat-laden. Also, from a food safetystandpoint, a rawturkey could infuse

salmonella or otherbacteria into the stuff-ing during cooking.Traditional: Candiedsweet potatoes and marshmallows.Alternative: Forget the butter, brown sugar andmarshmallow topping on sliced sweet potatoes.Instead, serve sweet potatoes in their natural glory, baked and sprinkled with a little cinnamon and nut-meg for extra flavor.Traditional:Gravy made from pan drippings.

Alternative: Gravy made from a low-fat broth. Whydouse turkey and fixings with extra calories? A lightau jus will provide flavor and a little extra moistureto the bird.Traditional: Cheese and buttery crackers platter.

Alternative: Fresh vegetables and a light dip. Therecommended daily serving of cheese is one ounce.

People tend to grazeon Thanksgiving, eat-ing much more thanan ounce of cheese.Plus, theyre pairingthe cheese with fatten-ing crackers. Instead, offer sliced fresh veg-etables and a dip madeof low-fat sour cream. If crackers are served, choose whole grainvarieties.Traditional: Breadstuffing.Alternative: Fruit stuff-ing. Whip up a batch ofstuffing that is muchmore about fruit than

the bread and butter.Use cubed whole-wheat bread and slicesof apples, pears, cran-berries, raisins, andany other in-seasonfruits. Wet with a low-calorie broth and bakeuntil browned. Foreven more flair, bakein individual muffin

cups so that portionsare clearly identified.Traditional: Fruit pies, such as pumpkin and

apple.Alternative: A buttery, flaky crust is certainly deli-cious, but it can pack even more calories on the endof a meal. Serve cobblers that are much more freshfruit and much less crust and extra calories. Betteryet, simply serve a platter of refreshing fruit slices.

Holiday office parties are a tradi-

    tion at many businesses across

    the country. These parties can

vary greatly depending on the sizeof the company, the resources

    allocated for the festivities and

    the participation level among the

    employees.

The parties can also vary in how

    their invitees view these end-of-

    year festivities. Some companies

    throw parties their employees

would just as soon pass on, while

other business treat their workersto the party of the year. Office

    party planners hoping this years

event is closer to the party of the

year than one nobody wants to

attend should consider a host of

    factors before getting started.

    Timing

The timing of the office holiday

party is a key factor in how suc-

cessful it will be. Since most par-ties are in the month of

December, its best to aim for ear-

lier in the month. By the end of

    December, guests might be too

exhausted to have a good time or

    may have already planned their

    holiday vacations and be unable

to make it. The closer the party is

to Christmas and the end of the

year, the less likely it is that allinvitees will be able to attend.

    Another timing concern is clients.

    Many businesses include clients

on their holiday party guest lists

as a gesture of appreciation for

their loyalty. By choosing a date

thats earlier in the month, party

    planners are increasing the

chances their clients can make it

    and wont be

    forced to

    miss the

    event due totheir own

    office party

    commit-

    ments.

    Settle on a

    few dates

    early in

    the

    month

and then ask employeeswhich theyre most amenable to.

    Finances

    Finances should also dictate cer-

tain aspects of the holiday party. If

the company is paying for every-

thing, be sure to verify a budget

    with the accounting department

    before shopping around for cater-

    ers, locations, etc.

If the office party will requiresome financial contribution from

    employees (such as paying for

    spouses or significant others),

keep that in mind, too. Employees

will of course be less enthusiastic

about a holiday party if they have

    to contribute considerable funds

    toward the event.

    Location

Location is another key consider-ation for party planners. No one

wants to travel far and wide for an

office party, so it helps to choose a

locale that is centrally located and

    convenient for everyone. Unless

the company is one where most

    workers telecommute, chances

    are employees will be comfortable

with a location thats close to the

    office

    itself since workers make

    the trip to that neighborhood

    anyway.

    Safety

Safety is a genuine concern at

    holiday office parties. Much of

that concern can be traced to

    alcohol consumption.

Unfortunately, many employeesoverindulge with alcohol at holi-

day office parties. With stress a

concern for many during the holi-

    day season, alcohol consumption

is incorrectly viewed as a means

    to relieving that stress.

    But many businesses have

    banned alcohol from such parties,

be it the result of local host laws

or simply out of concern for theiremployees safety. When planning

the party, be aware of the alcohol

policy. If the policy is no alcohol

allowed, theres no need to worry.

If alcohol is allowed, arrange for

    complimentary transportation for

    anyone who might overindulge

    and prove unfit to drive.

Oct. 25 ~ Nov. 17: Sierra Stages presents StephenSondheims ASSASSINS. The groundbreaking musi-cal Assassins by Stephen Sondheim and JohnWeidman brings the Sierra Stages 2012 season to aclose with a bang! Using the most American of art

forms, the musical, Assassins investigates the per-sonalities of nine men and women who killed orattempted to kill nine Presidents. These Presidentialassassins are never glorified or celebrated, but pre-sented by Sondheim and Weidman to explore howand why each of these outsiders stop and alter histo-ry. The show is entertaining yet thought-provoking,and at turns hilarious, jolting and heart-wrenching,as the history of these men and women unfurlsacross (and often without regard to) time. Susan

Mason is the director and Ken Getz is the musicaldirector. Assassins begins on October 25 and con-tinues for four weekends through November 17.Performances are Thursdays at 7 pm, Fridays andSaturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm. The first twoperformances, Thursday October 25 and FridayOctober 26, are previews and general admission

tickets are only $15. For all other performances, gen-eral admission tickets are available at the reducedprice of only $20 if purchased before October 27.After that, general admission tickets will be $25 forall performances. In addition, Sierra Stages is

pleased to offer reserved seating for $30. Withreserved seating, audience members may select spe-cific seat locations in advance and also provide addi-tional financial support for the production. GeneralAdmission Tickets and Reserved Seating are avail-able online at www.sierrastages.org, by calling SierraStages at 530-346-3210, and in person at the NevadaCity Box Office (at the Miners Foundry) andBriarPatch Co-op.
