Whether it is in English, Spanish, German or Texan, the Schertz area has been inviting folks to visit, or even stay, for decades. Native Americans found good water and game here for hundreds of years; then settlers showed up around 1843 and just kept coming. The community took the Schertz moniker around 1875 and incorporated as a municipality in 1958.
Since becoming a city, Schertz has never settled for second best. Residents demand and community leaders deliver premier services so good that national magazines rate Schertz as one of the best places to live. With a regional trade area of nearly 55,000 people and miles of frontage along Interstates 35 and 10, Schertz’ location offers travelers the opportunity to take a break from the road and just stay next door to many of Texas’ most desired destinations. The City’s primary goals are 1) Quality of Life, 2) Sustainable Economic Prosperity, 3) Effective Land Use and 4) Regional Collaboration and Intergovernmental Cooperation. Community pride runs deep and wide in this heart of Texas. DI

EVENTSFebruaryTrail Rider Lunch in Schertz(210) 945-7400Be on the lookout in early February as local residents and community leaders turn the Pickrell Park pavilion in Schertz into a makeshift chuck wagon for the hungry and weary trail riders as they pass through town on their way to the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Schertz Bank and Trust employees and volunteers prepare plenty of stew to feed dozens of hungry members of the trail riders.
MarchWilenchik Walk for Life(210) 619-1600The Wilenchik Walk for Life is an annual event benefiting the UT Health Science Center Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC) of San Antonio. The 5K walk along Schertz Parkway is named in honor of former Schertz City Councilman Tony Wilenchik, a tireless advocate for his community who lost his battle with cancer in 2009. Team and individual registration forms are available online at schertz.com. Don’t forget to buy your Signs of Love for the walk.

Sweetheart CoronationThe name Sweetheart has become recognizable over the past 20 years not only within Schertz but in dozens of surrounding communities. Members of the Sweetheart Court serve as ambassadors at local community events and of course at parades and festivals. They also participate in various community service projects in and around the Schertz area. Applicants, volunteers and sponsors are welcome. Contact the Schertz Event Coordinator to request an appearance or for information. Donations accepted.
JulyJubilee(210) 619-1600While most folks waited to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of American Independence in Schertz, we love our freedom so much we started the party a year early. In 1975, a handful of volunteers organized the first Jubilee. Now, nearly 40 years later, Schertz’ Jubilee celebration has become one of South Texas’ largest tributes to freedom and the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces. Complete with music, entertainment, food and fun, this Schertz celebration offers something for the whole family. Vendors, volunteers, entertainers and sponsors are needed. Donations accepted.
ArtzWhen Money Magazine twice named Schertz one of the top places to live in Texas and the United States, the financial magazine said quality of life was an important factor. As one of America’s best small towns, Schertz is always looking to improve that quality, and one way is cultiva-tion of the arts, especially local talent. Join the Schertz Area Artz Council each July for a showcase of our local talent. For more informa-tion, visit schertzareaartzcouncil.org.
SeptemberSchertzFest(210) 619-1600What would a birthday be without a party? Join the City of Schertz at Schertz Fest each September in Pickrell Park. Enjoy a weekend soaking up live entertainment while sampling all kinds of festival food from the many food vendors that will be on hand for the occasion. Children will be more than happy to join in on the fun and games at the carnival. Included in the annual event is the BBQ cook-off sanctioned by the Texas Gulf Coast BBQ Cooker’s Association. For those wishing to compete, stay tuned to visitschertz.com. Vendors, volunteers, entertainers and sponsors are needed. Donations accepted.

OctoberNational Night Out(210) 619-1253Organized each year by the Schertz Police Department, the National Night Out is an anti-crime, get-to-know-your-neighbor event. For more information, contact the Special Projects Officer. Donations accepted.
Trunk or Treat(210) 619-1300The Annual Emergency Services Schertz Trunk or Treat celebration returns Halloween night at the large pavilion in Pickrell Park. Organized every year by the Schertz Fire Department, more than 900 local children converge on the park for family-friendly fun. Local law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel as well as civic organizations and businesses are welcome to participate. The program provides a safe, enjoyable environment for children as an alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. Mark your calendars to join us for a ghoulishly good time. Donations accepted.
DecemberFestival of Angels(210) 619-1600There is no place better to come home to for the holidays than Schertz! Join the City of Schertz for South Texas’ official holiday kick-off celebration when Santa’s Sweetheart Court flips the switch, lights the tree and wishes for a white Christmas. Held the first weekend in December, the Festival of Angels features a lighted night parade, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, tasty treats and wonderful music from local schools and choirs. Join us as we Ski Schertz and ring in the holidays. The fun lasts from the tree-lighting ceremony until the last bit of snow melts in the park. It’s great family fun, and there is something for everyone. Donations accepted.
