Summer Reading Program 2012

Number of children registered: 351

Number of Events: 45

Average Number of Volunteers: 6 Number of Volunteers Hours: 60

The 2012 Summer Reading Program “Dream Big,

Read” brought many children, teens, and families

to the St. Francis Library this summer. With the

unusually hot weather, families spent much time

in the library. Young patrons also earned reading

incentives, enjoyed programs, and entered con-

tests. Our theme, “Dream Big: READ!” guided

summer planning and decorations, and included

dreams, night animals, and the stars. The teen

theme also reflected on the evening: “Own the

Night”.

The most popular part of youth summer activities in the library was the reading

program. Almost all ages were invited to register. Ages 2 to 5 were part of the

“Read-to-Me Club”, and ages 6 to 12 joined the “Mid Kid Club”. Teens signed up

for their own club, as well. Once registered, young patrons could fill out a reading

calendar, noting the times they were read to or read themselves. Each day of the

calendar could be checked off after reading 20 minutes. After June and July ended,

families could return for their prizes, which reflected the total number of days they

had read.

Statistics show that 351 registered to take part in

the summer reading program. Of these, 122 were

ages 2-5. Of children ages 6-12, 175 registered.

Teens who chose to register in the Young Adult

level were 54. The number completing the

program in June was 128. In July, completion

was 125. Those finishing “Complete 8” and

“Genre Bingo” totaled 70.

The year brought changes as the library

saw two of its long time employees,

Connie Sheehan and Suzanne Doyle,

retire.

Connie started at the library in January

of 1996 as the full time adult services

librarian. She was in charge of the

acquisition of all adult fiction, DVDs

(VHS in the beginning!), CDs and large

print books. Always enthusiastic about

programming, she developed an adult

summer reading program and brought

many well attended historical programs

to the library. Suzanne Doyle and Connie Sheehan

Jean Wood

St. Francis Library was the recipient of a

generous donation. The late Jean Wood was

a local artist, longtime patron and library

lover. She donated many art and painting

books over the years. Money she left to the

library will be used to purchase new tables

for the program room, cozy seating areas for

the adult and youth rooms as well as add to

the collection of art books.

Sr. Rita Schlumpberger

The library mourned the loss of Sister Rita

Schlumpberger who passed away December 23, 2012.

Sister Rita taught grade school in the Milwaukee area

for many years, then later served in Literacy tutoring

at the Milwaukee Achiever Center. Sister Rita then

started at the Library where she became a fixture as

she taught English as a Second Language to those in

need of learning English or brushing up on their lan-

guage skills. Sister continued her work until her illness

no longer allowed her to do so.

The Library staff will miss her kind and patient ways.

Suzanne, a former teacher, became the library’s youth services Librarian in January of

1997. The popular Librarian was here for the huge transition in 2007 as the Library

expanded and the Children’s collection moved downstairs to its more spacious area.

Suzanne had an integral part in making the space a wonderful place for kids to read, learn

and relax.

Both Connie and Suzanne moved to part-time positions in March of 2007. Connie

fully retired in November and Suzanne in December of 2012. Both of these unique

individual’s talents and dedication to the library will be missed.
