2012 Annual Report

As we reflect on the past year, we’d like to say thank you to everyone who contributed to our success. From our members and guests, to our donors and supporters, to our volunteers and staff, it is a team of many that makes the Rosamond Gifford Zoo one of the premier attractions in Central New York.

In a year of unprecedented births and wonderful weather, the zoo broke several attendance records in 2012. Total visitation to the park was 372,139—the highest total attendance at the zoo in more than 15 years!

We celebrated several animal births and hatchings, including penguins, patas monkeys, a markhor and yellow-spotted Amazon river turtles. For the first time in 14 years, we had snow leopard cubs and, after a hiatus of more than two decades, welcomed fennec fox kits.

It truly was a banner year, setting the stage for our next phase of growth. In partnership with Onondaga County, Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is creating a comprehensive strategic and master plan to develop a vision for the zoo’s future and a road map for getting there.

Thank you for your support over the past year. We appreciate your memberships, contributions and visits, all of which help us improve the zoo for generations to come and preserve memories for a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Janet Agostini John Luchsinger, Jr. President Chairman of the Board

A Joint Message from the President of the Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo and the Chairman of the Board

ON THE COVER: For the first time in 14 years, snow leopards were born at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Brothers, Ramil and Bajen, have been a favorite among zoo guests.

Moo, a longhorn cowfish, is easily recognized by her long horns, which protrude from the front of her head, much like those of a cow

or bull. Though beautiful to look at, the cowfish possesses several defense mechanisms that make it unattractive to prey.

More than $150,000 was invested in the design and installation of a handicapped-accessible seating area at Northwestern Mutual Animal Encounter.

Friends of the Zoo made its final payment to Onondaga County in support of the Parks for Tomorrow II initiative. Through Conserving What We Love: The Campaign for Elephants and Primates at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Friends of the Zoo raised $1,730,771 to support the construction of Asian Elephant Preserve, Primate Park and Gatherings, as well as several important educational components and exhibit enhancements for the projects and renovations.

Friends of the Zoo made the initial $79,000 investment in the giant Pacific octopus exhibit, which is slated to open in 2013.

Nearly $10,000 was invested to bring world-renowned animal trainer, Steve Martin of Natural Encounters, to the zoo to work one-on-one with the staff to improve demonstration programs and enhance the guest experience.

Specialty falconry equipment was purchased at just over $1,000 to provide free flight training for Aniken, a Harris hawk.

Guests were able to view the snow leopard cubs, Bajen and Ramil, several months earlier than planned due to a $2,000 investment in specialty mesh for the snow leopard exhibit.

To provide additional enrichment opportunities for the siamangs and patas monkeys, nearly $3,000 was spent to install swinging ropes and a hammock in Primate Park.

To enable zoo enthusiasts to view the patas monkeys at any time of the day or night, more than $2,500 was invested in a webcam, which can be viewed online at rosamondgiffordzoo.org/live.
