    Program Design and PurposeThePBLCompetitiveEventsProgramexempliestherangeofactivitiesandfocusofFBLA-PBL,Inc.Theseeventsarebasedon

    projectsdevelopedfromthegoalsof FBLA-PBLandthecurriculaof businessprograms.FBLA-PBLiscommittedtofacilitatingthe

    transitionof itsmembersfromtheireducationaldevelopmentintotheircareerpath.TheCompetitiveEventsProgramplaysacentralrole

    indeliveringonthiscommitment.Theprogramallowsmemberstodemonstrateandvalidatetheirmasteryof essentialbusinessconcepts,skills,andknowledge.Inaddition,membersparticipatinginthis

    programwill:

    demonstratetheircareercompetencies,businessknowledge,and

    job-relatedskills; expandtheirleadershipskills;

    demonstratetheircompetitivespirit;and receiverecognitionfortheirachievements.

    AwardsProgram(NAP)forthePBLdivision.Theseguidelinesandtheprogramtheyrepresentaretheresultofmanyhoursof

    hardworkonthepartofmanydedicated

    individualsforaperiodofmanyyears.Theircommitmenttothisassociationandtheirworkarerecognizedandappreciated.

    Mission StatementNAPsmissionistopreparestudentsfor

    successfulcareersinbusinessthroughsupportforcurriculumdevelopmentandinnovative

    assessmenttools.Tohelpmeetthatcharge,the Competitive Events Program has been

    developedandmadeavailabletolocalandstatechaptersforuseinassessingstudents

    Thereviewprocessisdesignedtorespondinastimelyafashionas

    possibletothechangingenvironmentinwhichbusinessndsitself,whileensuringappropriateinputandparticipationfromlocalandstateadvisers and members.

    toFBLA-PBLprogramsandobjectives.Finally,theNAPCommitteewelcomesandencourageslocalandstateadvisers,members,or

    otherinterestedpartiestosubmitideasforeventimprovementsoradditions.IndividualsdesiringtosubmitrecommendationstotheNAPCommittee,ortomakecommentsaboutthecompetitiveevents

    thenationalstaff,underthedirectionof theNAPCommittee.Membersof theNAPCommitteeareselectedbasedontheir

    experienceandexpertiseinthedevelopmentand/oradministrationofcompetitiveevents.

    Committeemembersservethree-yeartermsandareresponsibleforapprovingevent

    additions/deletions,ensuringeventsarecurrentandrelevant,developingguidelines

    forcompetitiveevents,andadministeringthecompetitiveeventsprogramattheNationalLeadershipConference(NLC).

    TheNAPCommitteefollowsadeliberate

    processinreviewingandupdatingtheCompetitive Events Program.

    Travelandinteractionwithstudentsfromotherschoolsare

    tremendouslearningopportunitiesforstudents.

    Competitiveeventscanbehelpfulinbuildingschoolspiritandinpublicizingabusinessprogram.

    Delayingcontestantselectionaslongaspossibleisencouragedsomorestudentsarestrivingformasteryorexcellenceinaparticular

    area.

    AteacherscompetenceoreffectivenessshouldnotbejudgedbythenumberofPBLwinners.Ateacherisnotanexcellentteacher

    copyof theprejudgedmediasentif theywanttoincludeitintheirperformance.

    AllchangestoNLCcompetitiveeventparticipationmustbemadebytherstFridayinJune.Deletionsaretheonlychangesallowedon-site.

    Performanceattendanceforprejudgedeventspresentationoftheeventmustbeconductedbyparticipantswhoauthoredtheevent.Inthecaseofateamevent,atleastoneauthormustgivethepresentationattheNLC;however,allteammemberswhowishtoberecognizedasnationalwinnersmustregisterfortheNLC.Noreplacementorsubstituteswillbeallowed.

    ThetopicsforBusinessEthics,BusinessPresentation,DigitalVideoProduction,EmergingBusinessIssues,andWebSiteDesigneventsareincludedineachof theeventguidelines.

    performanceeventsshouldbeawarethatthenationalassociationreservestherighttorecordanyperformanceforuseinstudyortrainingmaterials.

    oEvent Entry Forms. Thestatechair,ordesignee,mustcertifythe

    statesentriesontheofcialonlineentryform(s).

    o Event Verication.CompetitiveeventchangesmaynotbemadeaftertherstFridayinJune.Deletionsaretheonlychangesallowedon-site.

    o Event Schedules.Participantsmustreportontimefortheir

    Business presentationUsing technology to support a presentation cansignicantly enhance a business leaders effectiveness.

    This event provides recognition for PBL members who

    demonstrate the ability to deliver an effective business

    presentation while using presentation technology.

    EligibilityEachstatemaysubmittwo(2)entriescreatedbyanindividualorbyateamof two(2)or

    three(3)membersfromactivelocalchapters,onrecordinthenationalcenterashavingpaidduesbyApril15ofthecurrentschoolyear.

    Nomorethanone(1)teammembermayhavecompetedinthiseventatapriorNLC.

    OverviewThiseventconsistsofapresentationgivenattheNLC.

    2013 National TopicThetopictobedevelopedinthispresentation

    andusedforcompetitionatthe2013NLCwillbe:

    You are presenting to a group of college students whoare at different stages in their college careers. Create

    a presentation with two purposes: (1) explain theimportance of internships, and (2) generate excitement

    for the potential opportunity. Explain resources usedfor nding an internship, strategies for obtaining the

    internship, common intern responsibilities, and general

    useful information a person needs before applying.

    Ideally, this topic also will be used orcompetitions at the state level. Chaptersshould check with their state chair/stateadviser to confrm the topic to be used ortheir state competition.

    Te presentation will be developed prior tothe NLC and will be used when giving thebusiness presentation.

    Performance GuidelinesoPreliminary Performance

    A maximum o fteen (15) fnalistsoran equal number rom each groupwilladvance to the fnal round.

    Student members, not advisers, must prepare presentations. Te participants must use a presentation sotware program as an

    aid in delivering the business presentation. Te individual or team must provide the computer or the

    presentation. An LCD projector will be provided.

    Te individual or team must perorm all aspects o thepresentation (e.g., speaking, setup, operating equipment). Othermembers o the chapter may not provide assistance.

    Five minutes (5) will be allowed to set up and remove equipmentor presentation items.

    Te individual or team has seven (7) minutes to deliver thepresentation. All team members must actively participate in thepresentation.

    Visual aids and samples related to the project may be used in thepresentation; however, no items may be let with the judges oraudience.

    At the end o six (6) minutes, a timekeeper will stand until noticedand hold up a colored time card indicating one minute is let,

    and at seven (7) minutes the timekeeper will stand and hold upa colored time card indicating time is up. When the presentationis fnished, the timekeeper will record the time used, noting adeduction o fve (5) points or any presentation over seven (7)minutes.

    Following each presentation, judges will conduct a three (3)minute question-answer period.

    Preliminary perormance is not open to conerence attendees.

    develop and demonstrate skills in interacting with

    internal and external clients to provide an outstandingclient service experience. The client service consultant

    engages clients in conversations regarding products,

    handles inquiries, problem solving, and uncoversopportunities for additional assistance. Participantsdevelop speaking ability and poise through presentation

    as well as critical thinking skills.

    event provides recognition for PBL members who

    demonstrate the ability to create an effective video to

    present an idea to a specic audience.

    EligibilityEachstatemaysubmittwo(2)entriescreatedbyanindividualorbyateamof two(2)or

    three(3)membersfromactivelocalchapters,onrecordinthenationalcenterashavingpaid

    duesbyApril15ofthecurrentschoolyear.Nomorethanone(1)teammembermayhave

    competedinthiseventatapriorNLC.

    OverviewThiseventconsistsoftwo(2)parts:aprejudgedprojectandaperformance

    component.Aprejudgedprojectshouldbedevelopedbasedonthenationaltopiclisted.

    Allparticipantswillcompeteinapreliminaryperformancetoexplainthedevelopmentand

    contentsofthevideoproduction.Participantsmustcompletebothpartsofaneventtobe

    eligibletowinanaward.

    2013 National TopicThetopictobedevelopedinthispresentationsubmittedforcompetitionatthe2013NLC

    willbe:

    Prole an entrepreneur in the community, interview

    the businessperson, show video of the business and

    the product, and address why this person started thebusiness and why the business is successful.

    Ideally,thistopicalsowillbeusedforcompetitionatthestatelevel.Chaptersshould

    checkwiththeirstatechair/stateadvisertoconrmthetopictobeusedfortheirstate

    competition.

    beshowntothejudges.Thepresentationshouldinclude,butnotbelimitedto:sourcesusedtoresearchthetopic;developmentanddesignprocess;useof differentvideotechniques;alistof

    equipmentandsoftwareused;andcopyrightissueswithpictures,music,orotheritems.

    Presentationoftheentrymustbeconductedbyparticipantswhoauthoredtheevent.Inthecaseof ateamevent,atleastone

    (1)authormustgivethepresentationattheNLC;however,allteammemberswhowishtoberecognizedasnationalwinnersmustregisterfortheNLC.Noreplacementorsubstituteswillbe

    allowed.

    Fiveminutes(5)willbeallowedtosetupandremoveequipmentorpresentationitems.Theparticipantsmustprovidethecomputerforthepresentationincludingacopyof thedigitalvideo

    productionproject.AnLCDprojectorwillbeprovided. Theindividualorteammembersmustperformallaspectsof

    thepresentation(e.g.,speaking,setup,operatingaudiovisual

    equipment).Otherrepresentativesofthechaptermaynotprovideadditionalassistance.

    Visualaidsrelatedtotheprojectmaybeused;however,noitemsmaybeleftwiththejudgesoraudience.

    American corporations have been moving their

    headquarters to foreign countries to avoid paying thefederal income tax in the United States, which is 20

    to 25 percent higher than foreign countries. Should

    the federal income tax for corporations be lowered tokeep corporations in the United States? Argue either

    afrmative that the United States government should

    cut taxes for corporations or negative that the taxes

    should be left as is.
