Greenwich Village is a place where individual creativity has always been celebrated. In 1905, Greenwich House created the Music School and, in 1909, the Pottery.

Since their founding, these schools continue to transform education in the arts— especially music and pottery—and provide opportunities for emerging artists to perform or exhibit their work. As an important contributor to the arts in New York, Greenwich House’s commitment to educational and artistic excellence remains as strong today as it was when it offered lessons and classes to those first students over a hundred years ago. Both schools continue to thrive because they are places for students of the arts to be creative in a supportive environment, to learn and help shape their craft.

Greenwich House Music and Pottery have classes and programs for anyone wishing to learn and grow, regardless of age or skill. The schools offer children’s classes, private lessons, adult group classes, ensembles, pre-professional mentoring, performances, exhibitions, cultural events and professional services, with the goal of fully serving the community.

GHMS provides conservatory-level training in a non-competitive atmosphere for students of all ages.

Our faculty has trained in many of the world’s finest institutions, and Germán Diez, who serves as chair of the piano department, has mentored generations of musicians with a level of artistic excellence unparalleled in the world of community music school education. Even though our primary focus has been music, we also provide instruction in dance and the visual arts, as well as early-childhood education programs. Countless American composers have premiered works in the Renee Weiler Concert Hall, and the recent addition of our STUDIO Apartment provides an opportunity for students to learn about the art of sound recording, working with the latest computer programs to create music for the concert hall or a media project. GHMS fosters a strong collegial atmosphere among the staff and faculty. Many of our students maintain a life-long connection with GHMS, returning again and again to continue their studies in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Private Music LessonsWeekly private lessons are offered in piano**, violin, viola, cello, voice, clarinet, flute, guitar, banjo, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, qin and harp. Children as young as five may study piano, violin and cello. More maturity is required to study brass, guitar, harp, woodwinds and voice. Students enrolling in two courses of private instruction receive a 10% discount on the second course. Families enrolling more than one student receive a 10% discount for each additional student. Student RecitalsWe encourage students to participate in recitals, held monthly on Fridays at 8:00 pm for senior students and Saturdays at 1:30 pm for junior students. Rehearsal workshops are held one week prior to each recital. The Annual Gala Recital in May features students who have demonstrated exceptional progress over the course of the year. All recitals and workshops take place in Renee Weiler Concert Hall at Greenwich House Music School.

Registration DetailsRegister in person at 46 Barrow Street or by phone at 212-242-4770, Monday – Friday 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Classes are divided into three 12-week terms with an additional 6-week summer term.

PaymentsGreenwich House accepts cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Discover. There is a return check fee of $35.

Students may enroll for lessons and classes, as space and schedules permit, at any time during the year. Tuition will be prorated for the remainder of that term if registering after the first week.

Annual non-refundable registration fee: $25 per individual, $30 per family.

Registration fee and tuition must be paid in advance.

Finance charges are applied to late payments.

AbsenceThere is no refund of tuition for student absence. If a teacher is absent, a make-up lesson will be arranged or substitute teacher assigned; if the instructor is not able to offer a make-up class, the school will issue a credit to the student.

ScholarshipsIn keeping with long-standing tradition, GHMS grants scholarship aid on the basis of both need and merit. Students are eligible for scholarship aid after having studied at the school for one full year. An application for a scholarship must be submitted by July 15. WithdrawalIf a student withdraws before the end of the fourth week of the current term, he/she will be charged for the lessons taken, plus two additional lessons.

GHMS reserves the right to discontinue any student who falls behind in his/her payments, has three unexcused absences for the term or is consistently tardy.

Any student who shows a lack of interest, behaves in a rude or abusive fashion, or does not demonstrate active progress in their studies according to the teacher’s assessment may be discontinued.

Practice Room RentalsGHMS’s 14 practice rooms are available to rent for $10 an hour, with a one-time registration fee of $25. Registration DetailsRegister online, by mail, fax or in-person. Registration forms are available online at www.greenwichhousepottery.org/resources. Full payment is due at time of registration. We do not prorate for missed classes. Classes are divided into three 12-week terms with an additional 6-week summer term. Call 212-242-4106 for more information.

PaymentsGreenwich House accepts cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Discover. There is a return check fee of $35.

AbsenceThere is no refund of tuition for student absence. If a teacher is absent, a make-up lesson will be arranged or substitute teacher assigned; if the instructor is not able to offer a make-up class, the school will issue a credit to the student.

Incentives“The Devotee”: Sign up for two 12-week classes in one term and receive a $50 firing credit.

“The Regular”: Sign up for Fall, Winter and Spring 12-week classes, or any three 12-week classes, all at once and receive a $100 firing credit.

“The Enthusiast”: Sign up for three 12-week classes in one term and receive a $125 firing credit.

“Refer a Friend”: Get a friend who has not previously taken classes at the pottery to sign up for a 12-week class and receive a $50 firing credit. Plus, your friend will receive a $25 firing credit.

ScholarshipsPottery offers financial aid for children and adults. All applications (available online on the resources page) must be submitted for each semester requested by the following deadlines: Fall: August 31, 2012 Winter: December 6, 2012 Spring: March 14, 2013 Summer: June 13, 2013

Refunds, Reimbursement & TransfersAll requests for refunds must be made in writing. All refunds will be charged a $25 administration fee. For a 100% refund, requests must be made one week prior to the start of class. For a 75% refund,

written requests must be received at least one day prior to the first class. Written requests for a 50% refund must be received at least one day prior to the second class. After the second day of class no refunds will be issued.

Class transfers are permitted before the second class. Classes with inadequate enrollment will be cancelled and those students will be fully refunded or will have the option to be transferred to another class.

Additional ServicesFabricationsEstablished in 2010, GHP Fabrications, a studio within our 16 Jones Street facility, is the newest division of Greenwich House Pottery. Our team of experts is on hand to create high-end ceramic objects and editions or create molds. Our facility has the capability to meet the most demanding jobs whether you need to have art fabricated for an upcoming exhibition, create personalized accents for your wedding or event, or supply your business with local, handmade pottery.

Resident Artist ProgramOur 10-month residency fosters an artist’s development by providing time and space in the center of the art world, culminating with a solo exhibition in our Jane Hartsook Gallery. The resident has access to a private studio (21’ x 7’) during the pottery’s

regular business hours, access to gas and electric firings and a $500 firing stipend. Residency runs from September 1 – July 1; application deadline is May 1.

Internship ProgramOur internship program offers high school, college and graduate students short-term work experience in studio operations and arts administration. Applications are accepted year-round.

Birthday Parties, Private Classes and RentalsThe Pottery has classrooms for rent—or the entire building can be made available—to accom-modate various needs, including movie shoots. We offer private classes for individuals and groups, whether it is a children’s birthday party, special class, or creativity workshop. Personalized classes run for two hours and include the cost of firing.

FacilitiesWe have two handbuilding

studios, two wheel-throwing studios, 28 potters wheels, two gas kilns, four electric kilns, two slab rollers, two extruders, two clay mixers, two de-airing pug mills and a spray booth. We offer five clay bodies: white stoneware, throwing stoneware, sculpture stoneware, red earthenware and sell 25-pound bags of porcelain. We have a large selection of glazes (24 high temperature and 17 low temperature), slips and washes, and offer low, mid and high temperature firings (cone 018 luster firing, cone 06 bisque, cone 04 oxidation, cone 2 neutral, cone 6 oxidation and cone 10 reduction).

Firing PolicyFiring charges are 5 cents per cubic inch for two firings, or 2.5 cents per cubic inch for a single fire. There is a $1 minimum charge on all pieces, including single-fired work (i.e., stacked greenware). GHP offers

incremental discounts for individual pieces that cost over $10 to fire.

For pieces over $10: 10% discount of the amount in excess of $10

For pieces over $50: 25% discount of the amount in excess of $10

For pieces over $100: 35% discount of the amount in excess of $50

Open Studio (Fall, Winter, Spring) We offer a minimum of 34 hours of Open Studio per week as an exclusive benefit for our currently enrolled students.On occasion, Open Studio is cancelled for special classes, projects or functions.

ExhibitionsAt the Jane Hartsook Gallery, our curatorial focus aims to expand public awareness of contemporary ceramics. Our exhibitions explore the use of varied techniques, materials and conventions.
