2012-13 MEN’S SEASON OUTLOOK

As the program celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2012-13, the Manhattan College men’s track & field team looks to continue that standard of excellence established by its predecessors. Throughout its storied history, Manhattan has earned 63 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, 22 IC4A Championships and the 1973 NCAA Indoor Championship.

The Jaspers won their 16th straight MAAC indoor title last season before regaining the outdoor crown they surrendered for the first time ever in 2011. It required a deep roster that was strong in each of the four event areas to win those two conference championships, and Head Coach Dan Mecca feels that all the pieces are in place for this year’s team to find similar success. With a combination of talented newcomers and seasoned veterans, Manhattan looks to once again be the team to beat in the MAAC.

CROSS COUNTRY/DISTANCEThe talented middle-distance trio of

Kevin D’Emic, Greg Perrier and Mikael Rojeras will be counted upon to lead the Jaspers on the track. D’Emic will be using

his final seasons of cross country and indoor eligibility this season. After an injury forced him to miss the 2011 cross country campaign, D’Emic returned in time for the MAAC Indoor Championships and brought home a gold medal in the 800 meters before reaching the final at the IC4A Indoor Championships. Outdoors, he won silver medals in the 1500 meters and 4x800 meter relay at the MAAC Championships.

After taking the silver medal indoors, Perrier, a sophomore, won a thrilling 800 at last season’s MAAC Outdoor Championships. He also anchored the Jaspers’ 4x400 relay squad to a second-place finish. Rojeras, a junior, finished third behind Perrier in that 800, and is strong in the 1500 meters, as well.

Other key members of Manhattan’s talented 4x800 meter relay team are juniors Salim Corbin and Nick Italiano. They both won silver

medals in the event at the MAAC Outdoor Championships, and Italiano anchored the 4x800 at the IC4A Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Anthony Colasurdo emerged as a strong contender in the 1500 during his first season in Riverdale.

Versatile sophomore Joe Rossi ran primarily the 400 and 800 last year, while sophomore Vincent Buccigrossi joins the program after one season at Wagner.

The top returners in the long distance events are also Manhattan’s best returning cross country runners. Junior Tom Voorheis, who competes in the 5000 meters on the track, was the Jaspers’ top finisher at each of the first three races last season. Senior Will Wilkens, meanwhile, earned MAAC Performer of the Week honors for his 35th-place showing at the 2011 Metropolitan Cross Country Championships.

Rounding out Manhattan’s deep cross country lineup are juniors AJ Hanifin and Josh Perez, and sophomores Jacob Adams, Stephen Chantry, Joe Cole and Kevin O’Brien, as well as newcomers Shane Beyer, Nathan Kotch and Chris Laucella.

SPRINTS/HURDLESSophomore Abdias Myrtil made an

immediate splash in the short sprints during his rookie campaign. Myrtil picked up silver medals in both the 60 and 200 meters at the MAAC Indoor Championships, then earned the bronze in the 100 meters and 4x100 meter relay at the outdoor meet. He also qualified for both the indoor and outdoor IC4A Championships in 2012.

Despite not joining the team until mid-year, sophomore Sheldon Derenoncourt emerged as the Jaspers’ top 400-meter runner by the end of the 2012 season. Senior Tyrek Barney is a valuable member of both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads. Barney ran the leadoff leg in both races at last year’s MAAC Outdoor Championships, while also placing fifth individually in the 400.

Four newcomers will help to strengthen Manhattan’s sprinting unit. Freshman Ferguson Amo boasts impressive credentials. He was an All-American in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relay at Council Rock High School in Philadelphia, and he earned all-state honors four times. Freshman Joe Martello attended Somers High School in Amawalk, N.Y., where he was a three-time all-league selection. Junior Joe Gibbs, a transfer from Westchester Community College, will run mainly the 400, while sophomore David Lothrop will be counted upon in the 100 and 200.

While also a capable sprinter, sophomore Jaylen Henderson’s best events are the 110 and 400 meter hurdles.

JUMPSIn the horizontal jumps, senior Dan

Duffy and sophomore Trevell Moxey lead the way. Duffy was slowed by injury last year, but came back in time to place fifth in both the long and triple jump at the MAAC Outdoor Championships. Moxey had a very solid debut season in the triple jump. He competed at both the Penn Relays and IC4A Championships (both indoors and outdoors), to go along with a second-place finish at the MAAC Outdoor Championships.

Also providing key depth in the long and triple jumps are sophomore Neil Pinnock and freshman Bobby Gebhard, a third-team all-state selection last year at Northern Highlands Regional High School in New Jersey.

Manhattan boasts a solid corps of high jumpers, anchored by senior Mike Carroll and junior Matt Perrelli. Carroll finished second at the MAAC Outdoor Championships and made his first appearance at the IC4A Outdoor Championships last season. Perrelli, meanwhile, proved just as steady last season, contributing team points at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets. Senior Mohamed Koita joins the team for the outdoor season after a stellar four-year career on the Jaspers’ men’s basketball squad.

One of the deepest events on the men’s roster, and one where Manhattan can usually expect big points in championship competition, is the pole vault. In 2012, senior Brian McGovern broke both the school and Irish national record when he cleared 17’1½ during the indoor season. He then defended his MAAC outdoor title, setting a championship record of 16’7¼ in the process.

Sophomore Savio Paul took second behind McGovern at the MAAC Indoor Championships last season, then captured the bronze medal outdoors. Senior Yardley Keshinover secured fifth-place points at the outdoor conference meet, and senior Andrew Petrovich brings valuable experience in the pole vault.

Joining this group of vaulters in 2012 are freshmen Dean Hefnawy, who was an all-state selection last year at Staples High School in Connecticut, and Matthew Pluhowski, a three-time all-league choice at St. Anthony’s High School on Long Island.

The pole vault also ranks among the best events for senior decathletes Felix Siljeback-Larsen and Tom Bechert. One of the top multi-event competitors in program history, Siljeback-Larsen won the decathlon at the 2012 IC4A Outdoor Championships, adding to his IC4A medal collection that also includes a silver in the indoor heptathlon from 2011. Bechert comes to Manhattan to complete his collegiate eligibility after a solid career at the University of Applied Sciences in Germany. His personal-best score in the decathlon is 7528 points, which would be a Manhattan school record.

THROWSSophomore Anastas Papazov earned

Second Team All-America honors in the hammer throw last year. After winning

the Championship of America at the Penn Relays in 2012, he went on to capture the MAAC championship and take second at the IC4A Championships in the event, before ending the season with a 16th-place showing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Fellow sophomore Edward Brentnall also had a solid freshman campaign, qualifying for the IC4A Outdoor Championships and placing ninth at the USA Junior Championships in the hammer throw. Added to the mix this season is sophomore transfer Killian Barry. Last season, the Irishman had three of the top five hammer throws all-time at Texas Tech, including a school record.

In the shot put and discus, Manhattan’s top returner is junior Rokas Kirlys. Kirlys qualified for the IC4A Outdoor Championships in both events last season, and he also put the shot at the indoor IC4As. A pair of freshmen—Ian McGinnis and Blerim Pocesta have also been brought in to compensate for the graduation of Roman Ewald.

Sophomore javelin thrower Phil Ragan made an immediate splash last season, breaking the school record in his first meet. Ragan later placed third at the MAAC Outdoor Championships and capped his 2012 campaign by winning the USATF National Junior Olympic crown to earn Junior All-America status. Sophomore Doug Montazella is an all-around thrower whose best event is the javelin, while freshman James Pancetti comes to Manhattan from St. John Vianney High School in Matawan, N.J.
