Recognizing more than 30 years of supporting students at Washington’s private, non-profit colleges, the 14th annual Stanley O. McNaughton Leadership Award was presented to U.S. Bank on April 8, 2013. Starting with a gift of $5,000 in 1979, the bank continues to support educational opportunity, choice and success for students with gifts to ICW totaling over $1.8 million. The bank was one of the first contributors to ICW’s new Matched College Savings Program (MCSP) to encourage savings for very low income students. Shalaya Sanders, a junior at Saint Martin’s University, stood in front of 40 ICW board members and staff, took a deep breath and started softly: “I am from the South end of Seattle…second of six children and the only girl in my family.” And immediately, the business, community and higher education leaders present began to listen raptly as she described her journey to the college that she “fell in love with.” By every measure, Shalaya’s family is low income, but it has never been short of drive and motivation. While neither her father nor stepmother earned a college degree, there was never any question that each child would go to college and graduate. Her parents worked tirelessly to help each child maximize their opportunities. Shalaya explained that she chose to major in social work to support her career goals in foster care, especially helping those who are aging out of the state system. Shalaya shared what she loves about her college: the small classes, one-on-one interaction with the professors, the forest that surrounds the campus. She paused for a moment, smiled and said, “This is my second home. I love this community. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for awarding me with this scholarship.” Stanley O. DESCRIPTION

Independent Colleges of Washington believes in the power of scholarships. So do our generous donors, who contributed more than $1 million between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012 to support students who attend our colleges. Those gifts created specific, named scholarships for 105 students and helped thousands more by boosting the general institutional aid available through the colleges for the 2012-13 academic year.

Shalaya Sanders, a junior at Saint Martin’s University, stood in front of 40 ICW board members and staff, took a deep breath and started softly: “I am from the South end of Seattle…second of six children and the only girl in my family.” And immediately, the business, community and higher education leaders present began to listen raptly as she described her journey to the college that she “fell in love with.”

By every measure, Shalaya’s family is low income, but it has never been short of drive and motivation.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for awarding me with this scholarship.”

May 2013

Dear friends of independent higher education in Washington:

We, and nearly 40,000 other students attending Washington’s independent colleges, thank you for supporting our dream of a college education.

With your help, students like us are preparing to lead Washington and the nation forward. We are learning in the classroom, labs and in the community; many of us are gaining valuable work experience and refining our office etiquette through work-study experiences; and every day provides another opportunity to practice our critical thinking skills and learn how to work together as teams.

We know that support for our educational goals comes from a variety of different sources, such as:

• Individuals, organizations, companies, and foundations that fund generous scholarships;

• Our colleges provide significant merit and need-based institutional aid;

• State and federal programs, such as State Need Grant and Pell Grant, open access to those of us who are low income and work-study helps low and middle income students pay for tuition, books, living expenses; and

• Our families help supplement our own contributions by tapping into their savings accounts, taking loans and working extra shifts to help cover the gap between the cost of college and available resources.

As future leaders, we are poised to successfully deliver innovative solutions in a world that is changing quickly and unpredictably. We are confident that our choice of college fits our unique needs best. But, most of all, we thank you for each and every opportunity your generous support has made possible for us.

With Gratitude,

Abigail, Alexandra, Andre, Anneke, Aubrey, Be’Jan, Brenda, Bronson, Calsie, Chase, Chelsea, Cierra, Conrad, Crystal, Cybil, Danielle, David, DeGross, Deirdre, Elizabeth, Emilia, Evan, Esperanza, Felicia, Guadalupe, Haile, Hannah, Henry, Ida, Jacqueline, James, Jannine, Jasmyn, Jermaine, Joseph, Joshua, Julene, Juvilyne, Kaitlin, Kaitlyn, Kendra, Kevin, Kiara, Korey, Kyle, Layla, Marco, Margaux, Mattie, Megan, Meti, Mikaela, Mira, Miriam, Monica, Nakaira, Nancy, Patti, Ray, Robert, Rodney, Selena, Shaylaya, Stephanie, Taylor, Teresa, Therese, Todd, Trevor, Vanessa, William, and many more...
