Facebook users say the company …

For the second time in history Facebook let its users vote on proposed changes to the

social network’s privacy policy.

Facebook users were given the opportunity to decide if the social network should keep

its existing Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) and Data Use Policy or

change it to the updated version which was introduced in May this year.

Voting took place from June 1 through to June 8 and saw around 297,883 people --

approximately 87% of all voters who participated -- opt to keep Facebook’s existing SRR

and Data Use Policy.

Despite voters’ overwhelming preference for the former policy, Facebook said the

number of users who voted was too small to be representative of the entire Facebook

community and said it would go ahead with the proposed changes.

“Despite our significant efforts to encourage users to vote, only 342,632 people

participated, which amounts to a tiny fraction of our user base of more than 900

million,” said Elliot Schrage, Vice President, Communications, Public Policy and

Marketing at Facebook.

He added, “Today Facebook will adopt the proposed updates to our Statement of Rights

and Responsibilities and Data Use Policy, which you can view by using the following

links: SRR and Data Use Policy.”

The social network previously said it would require more than 30% of its site’s users to

vote on the changes for the results to be binding.

Users, however, are claiming Facebook didn’t do enough to promote the voting

opportunity. Most said they didn’t even know about the vote until it was too late.

“What outreach effort?” questioned Facebook user John Meyer in the comments on

Facebook’s Site Governance page. “FB did NOTHING to alert users of this vote.”

Janet Kline Cook asked, “Couldn't your ‘substantial outreach effort’ have included

something as simple as a message that showed up on each and every facebook user's

page????”

“FB needs to notify every user about proposed service changes, not just the ones who

like this annoying page,” added Ader R Oks.

Bruce Cairns said, “It's a great system they've got. 87% vote against but because they

didn't tell anyone about it or provide any way for people who did know to actually vote

via the whole range of FB apps, they can just ignore the result.”

Lorraine McGuinniety called for Facebook to hold the vote again. “Facebook should

have sent a notice via FB messages AND an email to each & every user with a subject

title that highlighted the fact there was a vote. I knew nothing about this & I'm a pretty

engaged & proactive user who regularly reassesses privacy settings. HOLD THE VOTE

AGAIN. Properly.”

Why did Facebook cast a vote, when they were going to ignore it anyways? Goodbye Facebook,

your demise is coming.

G.T. • 7 mins ago

I'd LMFAO if someone dealt them a king their servers and locking the rich punks out of their

own site.

Matt • Wichita, Kansas • 1 hr 38 mins ago

Ignoring the vote may hurt their stock price - that is negative news you know, they don't care

about the people they expect to click on ads.

If FB is integrated to iPhone in next iOS, I guess Facebook will have access to my phone book

and contact list on Iphone also. So they can start contacting those people on my iPhone and use

my name to advertise to them? :)

their decline is on the way.........

radical c • 6 hrs ago

It sounds like FB was going to make the change, regardless of the results. A small percentage of

the US population actually votes, does that mean the elected official doesn't get the job? No.

When conducting a survey, you cannot possibly poll everyone, so only a sample of the

population gets to participate. It would seem to me that 87% of 342,632 would be enough to

gauge the desire of the users.

NaturesSuperPride • Jacksonville, Florida • 6 hrs ago

We're going to let you vote on something, but if you don't choose what we want, we're going to

I've seen that voting system before -- Somalia, Haiti, Iran, Burma, Pakistan, etc. Hold a vote,

don't allow people to know about, get to, or otherwise vote, and then screem it wasn't a fair

election when you loose. If FB wanted people to vote, it could have just required everyone to

vote the next time they connect.

Brandon • 8 hrs ago

Facebook is a branch of the U.S. government.

I can only hope that enough FB users get mad enough to stop using it entirely. Maybe it will

There are just too many controversies in FB (viruses, privacy, etc) that FB isn't worth it, IMO.

Just figuring out your privacy settings takes way too much time out of a day. All for what? To

read about what someone cooked for dinner last night? Sheesh. LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO

SPEND PRECIOUS TIME ON INANITIES.

Yeah, great idea, let's have another vote - maybe another 269,657,368 people will show up and

All you FB users should be thankful they even allowed you to vote on anything they want to do.

Travis • Sullivan, Missouri • 11 hrs ago

This is the first time that I have ever heard of this so called "voting" thing with Facebook. They

will change the privacy policy regardless if people do or do not vote on it.We will never be

notified of the changes either.

Facebook_h8tr • 11 hrs ago

Ha ha ha.. facebook can suck it. I clicked the 'delete my account' button long ago.

Tom • Portland, Oregon • 11 hrs ago

rofl... in order to be "statistically significant" you only need a fraction of the representative

population to vote.... for crying out loud, clinical trails for FDA approved drugs test groups are

in the hundreds to be statistically significant.... so..... 87% of 350,000 think the idea is bogus, but

FB shrugs it's billion-dollar-shoulders and says "too close to call." O.o ?!?! this is like watching

a Harold Lloyd marathon..... i can't stop laughing....

OK...for those of you on FB...did you know about the vote..and did you vote.

It's double no for me

Jacque • Houston, Texas • 12 hrs ago

300,000 people is too small? What a joke. Why have a vote if you were going to do what you

wanted to do anyway?

gypsy • 12 hrs ago

If Facebook rolled this out to everyone of its active 500million users and only 300k responded, i

wonder if this is telling of Facebook's effectiveness for targeted ads

Stephen • 12 hrs ago

Ridiculous... what "significant efforts?" 350k is a small enough fraction of FB's total users that

these "voters" may have only accidentally discovered FB's supposed "vote." As the whole point

of social networking is communicating information, there are only two possibilities: FB is a

failure as a social networking tool OR FB had no intention of alerting users to the "vote." I

wouldn't bet on FB's success; it's totally dependent on user input and, thus, alienating users

guarantees its failure.

They put a 30% requirement to the vote for it to matter, but only told 1% of the users about the

vote...yup...seems about right for Facebook.

And look at their stock...People like using the product, but not enough to dump their money into

the company.

Deuce • Medford, Oregon • 12 hrs ago

Actually, that's a very good turnout for a poll. Think of it this way, the Nielsen rating is based on

the fact that one person with a Nielsen box represents a good 50000 people.

Statistically speaking, there's almost no possible way for FB to turn the tide on an almost 90%

dislike rating. Do they really think that a higher number of participants would eventually give

them a favorable rating on their own poll?

FB is being intellectually dishonest with even having a poll if their own poll numbers. Why even

have it then?

MikeS • 12 hrs ago

If every "real" person voted, it probably still wouldn't be 30% since 80% of the profiles are

spammers and cats.

Scott • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania • 12 hrs ago

SO, there was a vote? I check FB twice a day... once for personal stuff and once for my business

page. NEVER saw a notification. NOT ONCE. so "Despite our significant efforts to encourage

users to vote, only 342,632 people participated, which amounts to a tiny fraction of our user base

of more than 900 million,” doesn't amount to anything with me... i do not believe there was any

effort! Since 70% of FB users are duplicate/fake/business pages for existing users and their pets

or for fictional characters, the vote represents 10% of the user base. which is probably ALL of

the user who were actually notified. FB is running a scam here

And since the vote was "and overwhleming 87% against the changes" you would think the smart

business man would fit that result to the larger population... is Statistical Analysis 101! This is

NOT how to run a business!
