Year in review

“It's free to join and an investment that our firm believes will have tremendous upside for both buyers and vendors,” said Webster.

On the track Inglis graduates have again dominated Australia's Group One races, saluting in 27 individual races at the highest level this season.

Musir and Happy Zero have provided international support to champion Sacred Kingdom, who was ranked World

Champion Sprinter for the third consecutive year.

It was another vintage year for our three-year-olds led by Faint Perfume, Wanted and Starspangledbanner. For the eighth consecutive year they look set to give Inglis graduates in that age group a champion title at the Australian Racehorse of the Year Awards.

Inglis remain the only sales company to offer multiple Group One winning two-year-olds for the past five seasons in a row, with Yosei and Pressday flying the flag in 2009/10.

With the backing of major breeders, 2011 will see the Inglis Guineas head up the very first Saturday stand alone race meeting

at Scone. This year's inaugural winner Star Of Octagonal along with fairytale filly Chance Bye were headline acts for the Inglis Race Series.

Few would argue however that the real star of the show in 2010 came in the way of the regal looking chestnut mare Sun Classique at the Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale.

The Australian bred mare was a champion in both hemispheres, having won Group Ones in South Africa and Dubai. Offered in foal to leading young European based sire Oasis Dream, she subsequently sold for $2million, the highest price at auction in Australasia in 2010.

an uncertain economic climate coupled with top of the market production costs led to much trepidation among stakeholders in the build up to the 2010 yearling sale season.

Thankfully however, the outcome of this year's sale series was a rousing endorsement for the resilience of our thoroughbred industry.

“Without doubt it was a challenging year for Vendors but the end result was clearly better than most anticipated”, said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.

“Much can be attributed to the racing product we offer, hence why those who are passionate about it fight hard to ensure its future.”

In a short period Australia has gone from market followers to leaders on a global scale with ownership viability and the diversity of buyers at our yearling sales being the envy of many racing jurisdictions.

The feats of our runners abroad again ensured a flood of international buyers despite compromised budgets due to the currency exchange rate.

“The next frontier is to showcase to the world the versatility of our thoroughbreds,” Webster added.

“The general sires list exhibits greater diversity in bloodlines and aptitudes than it ever has, so the opportunities are there.”

The past year saw Inglis take the lead on launching an industry rewards program for its clients that will also open channels to new revenue streams.

The Racing Rewards Program will enable participants to tap into external partner programs holding billions of dollars worth of points and redeem them for a multitude of uses including part or full payment of yearling purchases.

with ten different countries featuring among the Buyers list, the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale was undoubtedly an international event. The Sale grossed more than $80million, with the burgeoning Session II chipping in an extra $5.9million on the final day.

Hawkes Racing returned to the fold in a big way this year, topping the Buyers list after securing nine yearlings for $4,085,000, with their highest priced purchase being the Encosta de Lago colt from the stable's former top mare Shania Dane for $740,000.

Angus Gold acting for Shadwell Australia was the leading Buyer by individual purchases, signing for 12 yearlings for a total cost of $3,815,000. Other buyers to top the double figures in terms of individual purchases were Paul Messara, Rogerson Bloodstock and Belmont Bloodstock, with 11 each. Ingham Racing also made a welcome return in 2010, with Bob Ingham's family securing 11 yearlings for $3,090,000.

Kitchwin Hills has long been one of the leading Vendors at this sale, but the Hunter Valley farm made its mark as a buyer in 2010, going to $1,875,000 for the sale topping Redoute's Choice-Regrowth colt from Segenhoe Stud.

BBA Ireland, James Bester, Mark Kavanagh, Patinack Farm and Gai Waterhouse Racing all made purchases topping a gross of $2million over the three days.

“In recent years the top end of the market has been dominated by a few individuals, whereas this year it was very competitive across a broad spectrum of buyers,” said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.

“With the dollar being so strong, it was a fantastic result to see increased investment from Singapore, Macau, Ireland and USA.”

“Hong Kong was particularly active again, securing over 13% of the colts in the Sale.”

Coolmore and Arrowfield again led vendors by aggregate, selling 35 horses for a total of $9,660,000 and 21 for $5,645,000 respectively. Widden Stud and Willow Park both grossed $4.5million each.

The presence of New Zealand vendors was once again a valuable addition to this year's Sale and Rich Hill Stud was rewarded for an outstanding draft by topping the Vendors' average list, with four selling at $480,000 and the Sale's top priced filly; Zabeel (NZ)-Gin Player (NZ) for $1.3million.

Along with Redoute's Choice fellow champion sires Zabeel and Encosta de Lago remained the most sought after stallions averaging $480,645, $315,000 and $300,854 respectively.

Champion First Season Sire elect Stratum joined the top echelon of stallions at this year's Sale, with his five to sell at $298,000 putting him among the top few sires by average.

renowned for offering athletic types that perform on the racetrack, the 2010 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale bucked the global downward trend, with figures rising across the board.

The gross of $12,693,500 represented a 20% increase on figures from 12 months ago, a remarkable result for a catalogue offering 85 fewer lots. The Sale average grew to $32,885, up from $26,598 in 2009, with the median up 25% to $25,000.

“We worked hard to get buyers here and Vendors did a great job meeting the market,” Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said.

“With 86% of the yearlings on offer BOBS eligible, there was strong competition amongst local trainers, but it was also pleasing to see buyers from Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and New Zealand so active in the market.”

The Classic Sale has a reputation for rewarding buyers willing to back their judgement, especially with young sires.

Choisir (Danehill Dancer), In Top Swing (Beautiful Crown), God's Own (Redoute's Choice), Carry On Cutie (More Than Ready), Triple Honour (Honour's List) and Whobegotyou (Street Cry) were all purchased from

the first and second crop of their respective sires at Classic.

The likes of this season's Juvenile Group One winner Pressday (Domesday) and Group Two victor Chance Bye (Snitzel), only added to the Sale's reputation.

Whobegotyou has been a great advertisement for the Classic Sale since he burst onto the scene in the spring of 2008. Widden Stud – the vendor of this season's G1 MRC Yalumba Stakes winner – led the Vendors in 2010, selling 24 yearlings for $1,181,500. Carramar Park also enjoyed a strong Sale, with 15 selling for $647,500.

The buyers were led by Bert Vieira, who secured seven for $573,500, highlighted by Golden Grove's Oratorio (IRE)-Pacific Dreams colt which was purchased for $200,000. BC3 were welcome newcomers at this year's Classic Sale and bought six youngsters for their two-year-old Sale on 22 August 2010 for $427,500.

The Sale was topped by Widden Stud's Fastnet Rock colt from the Octagonal mare Sea Folly, which went the way of Kieran Moore for $250,000. He was one of 17 lots to make $100,000 or more.

Snitzel, the sire of dual Inglis Race

Series winner Chance Bye, led the sires by average with his three yearlings selling for $130,000, $110,000 and $60,000.

Trainers to purchase four or more yearlings included Todd Howlett, Neville Parnham (WA), Rick Worthington, Barbara Joseph, Bede Murray, Neville Layt, Jason Coyle, Leon Macdonald (SA), Alan Scorse, Robbie Griffiths (VIC), Greg Hickman, Kris Lees, Mauro Poletti and Michael Tubman.

Along with Snitzel, young sires to obtain a 100% clearance rate (three or more sold) included Fastnet Rock, Starcraft, Lonhro, Charge Forward, Churchill Downs, God's Own, Bradbury's Luck, Elvstroem, Gonski, Domesday, Al Samer and Excites.

J. Smith; Bill Vlahos (BC3).

the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale enjoyed significant resurgence in 2010 highlighted by the gross exceeding $30million and an increase in average of 30% during Session I.

The gross for Session I was $28.8million – a rise of 21% on 2009 – with an average of over $71,000. Importantly, the median rose by over 22%.

“Vendors at this Sale have continued to offer outstanding prospects and it was pleasing to see them rewarded with decisively better results at this year's Sale,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.

“The race track record of Melbourne graduates speaks for itself and with that reputation growing all the time, there was plenty of incentive for buyers to be at Oaklands to secure the stars of tomorrow.”

The Sale was headed by two Redoute's Choice yearlings that sold for $400,000 each. Bellerive Stud's filly from the New Zealand Group Two winner Maze was purchased by Bill Mitchell and Arrowfield's colt from the US-bred Oceanette went the way of New Zealand agent Dean Hawthorne.

Eliza Park finished as the Sale's leading Vendor by aggregate in 2010, selling 37 yearlings for $2,221,500. Three Bridges

also enjoyed an excellent Sale, with 20 lots realising $2,125,000. Burnewang North Pastoral (seven sold for $820,000 at an average of $117,143) and leading South Australian nursery Mill Park (seven sold for $812,500 averaging $116,071) were the leading Vendors by average (five or more sold).

South Africa's Form Bloodstock represented by principal Jehan Malherbe was the Sale's leading Buyer, purchasing six yearlings for $900,000, while Melbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths bought 14 yearlings for $897,000.

Premier graduates enjoyed another stellar 12 months on the track in the lead up to the Sale, highlighted by champion international sprinter Sacred Kingdom's second Hong Kong International Sprint win, the feats of stud bound dual Group One winners Starspangledbanner and Turffontein, not to mention the exciting ability of Group Two winning filly Black Caviar.

Their respective trainers and agents were again active in the Oaklands ring, with Ricky Yiu, Troy Corstens, Anthony Cummings and Peter Moody taking home 18 yearlings for $1,854,000 between them.

In 2010 Inglis aligned with the Melbourne Festival Of Racing to promote the yearling sales during this

this year's Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale achieved significant gains across all major indicators, complementing another strong season on the racetrack.

Autumn graduates to achieve stakes success this year included Orbit Express, Broadway Harmony, Periduki and She's Got Gears. Promising gelding Our Baby Bonus was another to fly the flag for Autumn this season, with another win at Moonee Valley in May.

Periduki made his claim for being the stakes winning bargain of the season when winning the Listed Matrice Stakes in Adelaide, having cost just $4,000. Group Three Victoria Handicap winner Orbit Express was a fine advertisement for the tough racehorses coming out of Autumn, while She's Got Gears and Broadway Harmony shone in the juvenile ranks.

In all, 257 horses were sold in Session I this year for a gross of over $3million, representing an 18% increase on figures from 2009. Similarly, the average climbed 23% on the figures from 12 months ago to $12,228. Session II contributed another $300,000 to this year's

gross. The median was also up 20%.

“We had good competition from a wide range of buyers and it was pleasing to see so many foreign investors taking an active interest, in particular a number from Korea, who took away ten horses from the Sale,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.

“The popularity of Super Vobis was also very evident, with those horses qualified attracting strong interest.”

Darley's presence in Melbourne continues to grow, topping this year's Vendors list (by aggregate) with ten selling for $251,500, including the Sale topping Strategic colt for $65,000.

Little Plains Stud and Burnewang North Pastoral also achieved gross receipts in excess of $200,000.

Edwards Elkington Racing topped the Buyer's list, with five for $134,000. Local trainer Tracey Templeton took home four for $127,000, while New Zealand agent Dean Hawthorne and Japanese buyer Katsumi Yoshida also featured prominently on the leading Buyers list.

Photos clockwise from left: Autumn graduate Our Baby Bonus; inspections at the Oaklands complex; winning trainer Peter Morgan presented with the 2010 Inglis Autumn Plate, won by Jill's Angel; Autumn graduate and Listed 2YO Flemington winner She's Got Gears; the Oaklands Sale Ring in full swing.

2010 was without doubt a memorable year for Inglis' increased involvement in the Hunter Valley.

For the past few seasons Hot Danish has been the Inglis HTBA Scone Yearling Sale pin-up girl and duly landed a most deserved Group One win when taking the All Aged Stakes at Randwick in April.

Fittingly Hot Danish became a dual Group One winner just weeks later, when bursting away with the BRC Doomben 10,000, taking her record to 14 wins in 25 starts for earnings just short of $2million.

Her win completed a memorable month for Scone graduates, with the Patinack Farm filly Small Minds winning the Schweppes Oaks to kick-start the Group One haul. Welkom Gold was a stakes winner over the Rosehill carnival before Star Of Octagonal emerged as a potential star, with a Group Three Randwick win followed by a demolition of the inaugural $770,000 Inglis Guineas at Scone.

The Sale has clearly benefited from its headline grabbing graduates and due to outstanding demand, went to two days this year.

The Select Session of the Scone Sale climbed 34% (by average) with the

two day gross reaching $3.58million, compared to a tick over $2.1million in 2009.

“This Sale goes from strength to strength and we made the decision to extend the Sale to two days owing to the great response from vendors,” Inglis Bloodstock Director Jonathan D'Arcy said.

“Racetrack results from the Sale have been outstanding in recent times and that success has filtered through to the sale ring, with a number of new buyers keen to secure a Scone yearling this year.

“The usual contingent of New South Wales buyers were complemented by a number of interstate trainers, including Tony Noonan, Robert Smerdon and Nigel Blackiston.”

John Foote Bloodstock led the buying bench this year, securing seven yearlings for a spend of $222,000. Arrowfield Stud topped the Vendors list, selling 13 for $269,500. Yarraman Park was also a key vendor, selling eight for $165,500.

The Sale fits around a great week of racing action in the Hunter Valley. The importance of this week was confirmed by Racing NSW the day after the Sale when the Inglis Guineas meeting was granted stand-
