Welcome...To the Harness Racing Weekly interactive yearling advertisement pdf.

We have endeavoured to give our advertisers more for their $ by making

their ads more accessible, not just to Weekly subscribers.

The following ads are for the 2013 PGG Wrightson Sales of the Stars NZ

Yearling Sales and the APG 2013 Yearling Sales.

You will be able as you go through the magazine to click on the ads and

be taken to the breeding pages on the PGG Wrightson Standardbred

pages, or to the websites of those advertising.

(Please see the example on the facing page)

The pdf will be updated every week on a Wednesday morning, as more

ads come through the magazine in the coming weeks before the sales, so

make sure you check back each week!

If you would like to see your yearling ad in the magazine please get in

contact with the team at the Harness Racing Weekly on

“I had a big clean out of mares a few years ago and only kept my top four.

“But since then I have re-invested and have seven new broodmares.”

His confidence in that side of the industry is buoyed by the fact the former ATC president now sits on the Racing Industry Board.

“It has been a really good experience and I think there are some exciting things that can happen in the next few years.

“But one of the most crucial ones I want to see come to fruition is better stakes.”

Croon sold last season’s $250,000 yearling at Karaka and says after a slow start he is now warming up for trainer Cran Dalgety.

“He took a while to break in but he is almost ready for the trials.

“And he is a big strong horse so I am sure he will be fine.”

And how does one of our most experienced vendors think the sales will go.

“I think it will be a lot like recent years.“The ones at the top end will tend to

be the ones most people want and I think the middle market will be reliant on a strong Australian presence.”

Driving treble for David Butt

David Butt was in top form at Addington last Friday night.

He won a treble, starting with the Love You filly Habibti, followed by the Group 3 trot with Stig, and then a middle-grade pace with the Robert Dunn-trained Samuel James.

Although Butt has been worried by a muscular issue in Habibti’s back, it was not a cause of concern as she sped to the lead and held it with ease in a mobile sprint.

This was her first start since the Jewels in June when Royal Aspirations eclipsed the opposition.

In the meantime, David and his wife Catherine have welcomed back a stable favourite.

Son Robert has returned after driving 79 winners while employed in Victoria for 18 months with former Canterbury trainer Brent Lilley.

He expects to be licenced again in the next few weeks.

Josh Dickie is set to contest his third Australasian Young Drivers Championship after an 11th hour bid at Forbury Park last Thursday.

Dickie drove Better Than Money to an all the way win in the race for junior drivers which made him the leading points scorer among the North Island drivers in the qualifying races.

He wound up with 94 points, four ahead of Zac Butcher, who qualified for the series with the top UDR rating of .4949 among the NZ juniors.

Harness Racing NZ marketing manager Andrew Morris said it is the highest UDR recorded by a junior in the series which began in 1993.

Matthew Williamson is the other NZ representative for the series in New South Wales between February 25 and March 3 as the leading South Island junior. The Oamaru-based Williamson amassed 117 points, 51.5 ahead of his nearest rival. His UDR was .4478.

Dickie, 21, who is employed by Papakura trainer, Tony Herlihy, won the Australasian Young Drivers Champonship in NZ in 2011 and contested the series in Western Australia the following year as the defending champion. He finished fifth. He is in his final season as a junior.

saw Flying Pocketlands choke down with 1200m to run, ultimately ended the contest and fortified confusion over Australia’s leading race for mares.

Adding to that confusion was the somewhat unexpected success of Victorian 5-year-old Blucolla Tigerpie in the Group 3 Ranji Bill Stakes at Menangle.

Facing an awesome field of local mares including Our Sixpence, Baby Bling and Marquess de Posh along with highly rated Queenslander Forever Gold, Blucolla Tigerpie proved a shade too good.

Trainer Michael Stanley was buoyant after the win and said he now believed his mare was a genuine Ladyship Mile contender.

“I couldn’t be prouder of her, she’s come such a long way and to see her fulfilling her potential right now is incredibly satisfying,” the Ballarat-based all-rounder said.

“There’s a lot of depth at the top end in terms of Australasian mares right now but that win proves that we’re in the mix so that gives us confidence heading into the Ladyship (Mile).”

has indicated his early brilliance will be replicated by his progeny by siring Commanci Chief to victory at Port Pirie last weekend.

The triumph, which came in a prelude of the Kindergarten Stakes, was the first for Ohoka Arizona, who is bred and owned by Katie Carville.

It was a giant weekend for Carville, who also bred and owns VHRSC Victoria Derby winner Ohoka Punter.

** ** **COMEBACK legend Sundon’s Gift

has added an unlikely element to March’s inaugural Great Southern Star series with an outstanding effort at Melton last weekend.

More than nine months after his official retirement ceremony, Chris Lang’s two-time Inter-Dominion and four-time Australian Grand Prix champion returned in the Glenferrie Farm Trotters Cup.

Taking on the might of star mare (My) Escapee and three-time Group 1 winner I Didn’t Do It, Sundon’s Gift – or Bernie

at home – was expected to run on late without figuring in the finish.

But his effort to charge home for second in a race which boasted the fastest lead-time ever recorded for trotters at Melton was extraordinary and all but suggested his renaissance will be a success.

Sundon’s Gift is yet to qualify for the $350,000 Elitlopp-style Great Southern Star series on March 23 but with up to two wildcard invitations at Harness Racing Victoria’s disposal his place should be safe.

Fairytale trotter Mister Zion became the latest GSS invitee following his Australasian Trotting Championship success, filling the 13th spot, with seven more remaining.

From Australia, Cold Sister, Brief Glance, Elegant Image, King Of Strathfield, I Didn’t Do It, Makati Maximus, Our Dolly Would and Mister Zion have all earned their spots.

While I Can Doosit, Stig, My Escapee and Charlemagne will represent New Zealand and Ridgehead Cahore will be the sole European ambassador.

Lombo Navigator’s win was part of a huge night for trainer Andrew De Campo and stable driver, former Kiwi horseman Matthew White.

They landed a treble with other winners being Clancy Maguire (Badlands Hanover-Soken) and Danieljohn (Blissfull Hall-Aussie Evita).

Daniel John’s win came in the feature of the night, the $50,000 San Simeon Classic (2130m).

The 4-year-old made the most of gate one and his early speed to lead throughout and post a slick 1.56.5 mile rate.

De Campo landed a fourth win on the night when the much-travelled Adda Paternal Suit (Rich And Spoilt-Iwantmydadback) easily won the eighth event.

There was added interest in last Friday’s race with the return to racing after almost three years off the track for former star pacer Bonavista Bay (Rustler Hanover-Our Lady Rena).

The entire, who had won 17 of his 29 starts, had little luck in running and showed encouraging signs to run sixth, beaten just 10m.

Bonavista Bay, trained by Mike Reed, had been sidelined with major problems in suspensory ligaments in both front legs.

Reed was pleased with the effort and added was sure Bonavista Bay would derive plenty of improvement from the outing.

** ** **LAST season’s star 3-year-old Scandalman

(Live Or Die-All In Vain) is travelling far and wide in his preparation for the Chariots Of Fire.

Just recently the Ian Wilson-trained pacer won a ho-hum $3000 race at Canberra.

Then followed heat and final wins in the rich Inter City Pace series at Maitland, near Newcastle.

But few expected Scandalman to bob-up at Junee last Friday night where he put on a

pacing exhibition to win the $14,000 Junee Cup (2170m) by almost 30m in a sizzling 1.58.8 mile rate.

Scandalman has now won four of his five starts this season and 16 of his 27 lifetime starts with earnings approaching $425,000.

Wilson and stable driver Jimmy Douglas failed to complete the feature double at Junee though when Hesa Buzzin could only manage third behind the speedy but injury-plagued Holy Camp Boy (Stature-Demi Joy) in the $10,000 Allan Harpley Memorial (2510m).

** ** **THE powerhouse training team of Emma

Stewart and Clayton Tonkin snared a double at their hometown Ballarat Cup meeting last Friday night.

The first leg came when junior driver David Moran partnered the improving Fearless Leader (Bettor’s Delight-Party Baby) to a tough win in the opening race in a 1.56.1 mile rate for 1710m.

Then last season’s tiny but classy juvenile filly Our Femme Fatale (Art Major-Aluring) made it two-from-two this season in the ninth race.

Our Femme Fatale won the Group 1 Vicbred final last season and clearly has the class to be a factor in upcoming features like the NSW and Victoria Oaks.

It gives Stewart and Tonkin a good backstop to the nominal NSW Oaks favourite Dieing Secret (Live Or Die-Secret Bonus), who has looked fantastic winning her only two starts this season.

Greg Sugars, who drove Our Femme Fatale, enjoyed a big night at Ballarat with three wins.

His other victories came on Narree Belle (Art Major-Vernett) in the second race and Geoff Webster’s promising speedster Real Hammer (Real Desire-Classic Cathy) in race seven.

Art Major filly Our Femme Fatale wins a 3yo pace at Melton for Greg Sugars.

at Claudelands where he had sorted out two lots, including an attractive black filly by Nero’s B B.

“At that time, Neroship and Liada had shown up from Nero’s B B’s first crop and it was a strong maternal family,” recalls Laboyrie.

“She was my first choice and I was able to secure her for $8000, but would have paid more,” he added.

Trained initially by John Langdon, Matai Jewel recorded and win and several placings as a 3-year-old before being transferred to Dinsdale’s MacKenzie, who placed her judiciously to win a further eight races and a tidy $53,000 before the end of her 4-year-old season.

Matai Jewel’s first foal was the speedy but unsound Matai Boy (1.58.7, 3 NZ wins) and Matai Mackenzie was the fourth.

She only left eight foals before dying with six racing and four winners.

Four of those foals were fillies and only one of those in Matambra won, while another in the Smooth Fella mare Matai Ruby would get the ‘wobbles’ and had no ovaries for breeding either.

Laboyrie is still breeding from the other three daughters along with Matai Mies.

Matambra has not produced a foal since Angelina Jolie, but is now in foal to Rock N Roll Heaven, while Matai Mies produced a filly by Rock N Roll Heaven this season.

Her dam Matai Marlene had another

colt by Bettor’s Delight this season and is back in foal to American Ideal, while Matai Grace has had a colt by Jereme’s Jet but then missed this season.

Atom Gold, the Soky’s Atom mare that Laboyrie acquired last year along with her American Ideal colt which is in the sales, is also in foal to Rock N Roll Heaven.

So it can be seen that Laboyrie has had his fair share of expenses in recent years, what with patronising top end stallions and racing all the foals.

If he does have the change of luck he thoroughly deserves - and Angelina Jolie would seem a good start in that respect - he will probably reflect on the day he might have made his own luck.

“You could say I’d been through a bit of a bad patch, so I decided to stop naming the foals Matai something, hoping that might bring a change of luck.

“There were still some Matai horses down south which were nothing to do with me.

“The Matai thing had some sentimental value for a while, but that had run thin, so I decided to try something different.

“Some of the names I’ve settled on are celebrities (we’ve no idea how the Kardashians achieved that status), but then there’s Omar, whose named after my favourite black cat.”

Given that many believe that black cats bring good luck, that was probably as good a place to start as any.

Zac Butcher drives four winners at Cambridge

There may not be crazy victory stunts standing upright in the sulky to end the season for Zac Butcher this term.

He knows he won’t crack the 100 wins for the season and probably can’t beat his Dad and arch-rival David Butcher in their personal battle.

But the star northern junior driver is still beaming about his results.

Butcher drove four winners at Cambridge on Friday and one at Stratford on Sunday to take his tally for the season to 42.

That would be a magical season for almost any junior driver but puts him a fair way behind leading junior

• by Michael Guerin

Matthew Williamson at the half way point of the term. But Butcher says he is thrilled how things are going,

even though last season’s 115 wins seems a long way off.

“I might not get to where I was last season but I am loving it,” said Butcher.

“Last year was just one of those seasons where everything went right but I didn’t expect to get back to those sort of numbers again this season.

“To be honest, I’d be happy with 50 wins because I am still young.”

Butcher’s boss Barry Purdon hasn’t lined up quite as many horses in the lower grades this season while another major source of winners, Peter Scaife, had a quieter start to the season.

“I drove a lot of winners for Pete last season and had a great run for Barry but I am still happy with how I am driving.”

Butcher is also thrilled to be part of the New Zealand team for the Inter-Dominion junior driver’s champs to be held in Sydney during Grand Final week.

“It is always something big to be part of and the racing around that time will be huge also.”

Butcher piloted two wins for Purdon last Friday, with Bettor Romance and Los Amante both making the most of barrier one.

He also drove Jetfire to win for Gareth Dixon and Omar to be a promoted winner of a maiden race for Dave Kaa.

Another highlight of the rare Cambridge daytime meeting on a Friday was Carlos recording his 11th career win.

A one-time battler, he has now won four times this season for trainer Peter Ferguson, whose son Dylan does much of the work with the gelding.

Not bad for a horse who was still a maiden after 16 starts in his first three seasons.

Omar (1) is beaten but is promoted to 1st over Dralion at Cambridge.

Eddie Boy to resumeEddie Boy, a nine and a half length maiden winner at

Oamaru in August, is ready to resume racing.“He has been doing hoppled work and is close to

resuming racing,” Graeme Anderson, his co-trainer, said.

“We turned him out soon after he won in August.”The giant son of Elsu had three starts for Anderson and

co-trainer Amber Hoffman after proving erratic in four starts for Kirk Larsen.

Eddie Boy was unplaced in his start subsequent to Oamaru when he left stride after leading at Ascot Park.

Leighton Hest sidelinedLeighton Hest, the well performed trotter, is on the

sideline with another tendon problem.“He has bruised a tendon sheath and will be out for a

couple of months,” said Andrew Faulks, his Waikouaiti trainer.

The 8-year-old Leighton Hest has not raced since the NZ Cup meeting in November. He joined Faulks last season for beach training after surgery on a tendon.

Leighton Hest had then won nine races from the Phil Williamson stable. Faulks produced Leighton Hest

for a first up win at Winton from a 40m handicap in May last year when the gelding was having his first race for 18 months. Wins followed at Ashburton and Addington.

Waikouaiti’s new presidentDick Tayler, best known for winning the 10,000 metres

at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, will be officiating for the first time as president of the Waikouaiti Trotting Club at the annual race meeting on Sunday.

Tayler is in the process of shifting from Christchurch to Waikouaiti. He has been a long time supporter of the Waikouaiti club and joined the committee last year.

He was a member of the club syndicate who won five races with Life’s Decision from the Waikouaiti stable of Andrew Faulks, vice-president and chairman of the club.

Tayler was marketing manager for Harness Racing New Zealand in the 1990s.

The former Waikouaiti Trotting Club president was Paul O’Neill, who has raced several horses including Franco Ledger, winner of the Waikouaiti Cup 12 months ago.

O’Neill has bought a property in Christchurch and he will make the shift from Hyde.

I’ve Been ThinkingIt’s only a short time now to the 2013 Premier Yearling Sales

and the countdown is sure to go quickly. However, on the day, it can sometimes seem to take an eternity for the one you are awaiting to have his or her turn in the ring. Some folks find themselves totally preoccupied during this time, but for those in need of something else to think about, a few possible topics for contemplation:

• What sort of money is this year’s top lot going to fetch?• How often does a top lot fail to recoup its purchase price?• How often does a reject become a champion? • How many “new faces” in the crowd this year? • How many times will we hear talk about “meeting the market”?• Should 5YOs at the Jewels be a permanent or temporary

addition?• When was the last time a horse went out 1/8 in the betting?• Which defunct racecourse do you most wish was still in

business?• Too much preview/review on The Box Seat or not enough?• Love on the Lawn for $30 – planning to get lucky on Valentine’s

Day at Addington?• How miffed were Freeview (Ch36) viewers that live Hunter Cup

night coverage was Ch35 only?• Has your average Place6 return so far been impressive or

depressive?• Will the bet become a regular part of your punting arsenal?

• Have you got your head around the Inter-Doms qualifying heats eligibility business?

• Is the ranking of heats a recipe for success or “totally flawed”?• Is the decline of harness racing’s one-time showpiece due to

continual changing or changing times? • Can this year’s new format capture the spirit and tradition of

the old Inter-Doms? Should it try to?• What should replace the former public stand at Addington and

when?• How come the TAB’s promised Typhoon platform could not

“deliver the outcomes expected”?• Where did the “worldwide research” come unstuck? • What happens now to all the assorted improvements it was

expected to bring?• How long can an ageing Jetbet system continue to serve us

well?• Several years on, has the Auckland Cups move to March lived

up to the initial hope and hype?• Most memorable set of harness colours no longer seen on

the track?• How many Smarter Trifectas have you taken as a result of the

advertising campaign?• Biggest improvement in harness racing in the last ten years?• Concerned that Whitcoulls (Christchurch outlets) are the latest

to pull out of selling Turf Digest? • How often have you downloaded a copy of the Monday Turf

Digest since it went off the shelves?• Are you armed and ready for the UFO invasion?• With TVNZ teletext closing down, how long will Trackside

continue to offer its valued service?• Why does The Informant seldom include the name of previous

drivers in its harness form lines?• Why does Pick6 operate to a 50 cent unit but Place6 does

not?• Why can you spend $1 on a Place6 but have to spend at least

$2 on Pick6?• Which harness driver or trainer comes across as the most

informative interviewee on TV/radio?• The first thing HRNZ’s new Commercial Development Manager

should do is?• The last person HRNZ’s new Commercial Development

Manager should listen to is?• The most notable omission from Trackside’s documentary on

its first twenty years?• Is “Summer of Racing” the new “Back To The Track”?• Could the quick fire nature of Monday/Tuesday racing be a

model worth extending more often? • Should a crash course in foreign pronunciation be a mandatory

part of training for Trackside?• Any sign of Gareth Morgan ringside?Hopefully, there’s something in there for everyone, though it’s

important to stress that it’s not essential to come up with an answer in each case. Sometimes, as they say, it’s the thought that counts. - JC

NZ record set by Jess Jaccka

Jess Jaccka won her way into the New Zealand records section

of the Harness Racing New Zealand website when winning a 2400m trot from a 30m handicap at Wyndham on Sunday.

She was credited with a time of 3.01.9, 1.9 seconds inside Solar Fire’s previous best for a mare or filly and better even than Gold’s best time for a male by 0.3 seconds.

The daughter of Continentalman and Janine Jaccka is a full sister to Jaccka Jack (12 wins) and Jaccka Justy (seven wins) and has already won five herself.

Owned by Charlie and Ailsa Smaill, Jess Jaccka was trained initially by Murray Gray and scored her first win in December, 2011.

On Gray’s death, Charlie Smaill took on the training himself and produced her to win a Golden Girls heat at Timaru.

She was unplaced after breaking in

the end-of-season final and transferred then to her regular driver Jonny Cox, who this season renewed his trainers’ licence.

To reduce travelling, Jess Jaccka had already spent time with Cox at WestwoodBeach, just south of Dunedin, and the beach training continued.

She has won three and finished second in four of her 12 starts for Cox and he reckons the beach has played a major part in her success.

“Straight line training helps a lot of trotters,” he said.

“It helps her; she used to touch herself in behind.”

According to Cox, the improvement in Jess Jaccka’s game has been all round with the lift in her standing start performance significant.

“Going to Addington helps. They step and run up there, that’s made a big difference when you come back down here.”

He added that Jess Jaccka can follow whatever speed and the fast pace at Wyndham suited.

Fast mobile 2400m times were also recorded by pacers with

Parisology clocking 2.56.7 in the contest for junior drivers.

She was having her 10th start since joining the Invercargill stable of Andrew Armour in September and had won one of those, but given no clues as to what she was capable of.

“She’d always shown ability but not had much luck,” explained Armour who reckoned the type of race, going that pace on a roomy track, was set up for her to win.

The first 1600m was cut out in 1.56.9 and the closing 800m in 60.9.

Armour also gave credit to driver Rory McIlwrick for the part he played.

“Rory drove her well, and the trip she got made it for her.”

Armour also remarked that Parisology had got a bit fat on him last week so he had upped her work and that made a difference as well.

Windermere Lad went 2.59.7 when winning the $9000

contest for non-winners and the victory went some way in helping his 83-year-old trainer Murray Faul match the recent success of his brother Jack, aged 87.

Stig’s chances of ever racing in Australia hang in the balance.

The big superstar continued his winning roll at Addington last Friday night, even after getting a long way out of his ground over the 1950m mobile.

He didn’t look quite as fluent in his action as he did when winning at Alexandra Park on December 31 but trainer Paul Nairn was expecting that after five weeks away from racing.

But the win proved once again, that even out of his comfort zone, Stig is the only trotter in Australasia wIth the motor to match I Can Doosit.

His amazing comeback though has left Nairn with some decisions to make.

Stig is at the top of the shopping list for every club in Australasia with a major trotting race, the two most prominent being the Glenferrie Farm

Challenge at Menangle on March 3 and the Great Southern Star on March 23 at Melton, which has some big lead-up races.

But Nairn is not sure whether that trip would be in Stig’s best interests.

“Sure I’d like to go but what is best for the horse has to come first,” he told the ‘Weekly’.

“He still has a little arthritis, which is manageable but whether it would make a long trip away harder is the question.

“And then we have to think about I Can Doosit. We have been able to beat him a couple of times but we aren’t going to beat him every time.

“So I will have a talk to Tim (Butt, owner) and then think about whether we go to Sydney and then Melbourne or maybe just Melbourne.”

One factor in Nairn’s indecision is that while the best trotters are New Zealand are away, Stig could dominate at home.

He would have the $80,000 NZ Trotting Champs at Addington on March 30 with the Rowe Cup to round out his season.

While the Rowe Cup would see most of the big guns home, the Addington race wouldn’t and Stig could start a $1.25 chance in a Group 1 race.

“So we have options here but it is a matter of weighing it all up.

“And I will see what the reports are from I Can Doosit’s trial at Melton on Monday night too.

“Obviously if he wasn’t around then the decision would be a little easier.”

The New Zealand panel charged with picking the five Kiwis to be invited to the Menangle race were set to make their recommendations yesterday and most of the five pick themselves.

The Mark Purdon-trained trio of I Can Doosit, Escapee and Dr Hook will all get invites, as will Stig.

That would seem to leave the last spot as a shootout between The Fiery Ginga’s early season form and the summer development of Sovereignty.
