Experienced Mustangs return to mat

Iola High’s wrestling foundation has been laid.

The Mustangs enter their fourth season of competition and fifth year as a high school wrestling program with 25 wrestlers on the 2011-2012 roster. They have a new coach in Aaron Sweazy.

The team also has depth. Thirteen are back again from last year; alto-gether 20 have wrestling experience.

“These guys are self-motivated. Our veteran wrestlers are mentoring the younger ones. Our seniors want to do something special this season to help build for the future of Mus-tang wrestling. That’s a good thing,” said Sweazy, who is in his first-year as a head coach after serving as an

assistant coach for Columbus High’s Titans.

Sweazy wrestled at Chapman High School. By his own admission he was not a top wrestler in high school or in college at the University of Central Oklahoma in Enid, Okla.

“But I love the sport of wrestling. I want to pass that on to others. Coach (Ron) Schomaker did a great job build-ing a foundation for wrestling here in Iola — at the middle school and in the high school. I want to continue that with these guys this season.”

Iola has two state tournament qualifiers back, although one is in-jured and won’t be able to compete. Sophomore Mike Armstrong was the first-ever IHS freshman to qualify for the Kansas Class 4A state tour-nament a year ago at 119 pounds. Junior Stephen McDonald, out with a knee injury suffered at the start of football season, was Iola’s first-ever wrestler to go undefeated in South-east Kansas League matches — 8-0 at 189.

“Mike is looking solid and it is ob-vious he hit the weight room over the summer. I’m looking for Mike to be even better this season at 120,” Swea-zy said.

Armstrong claimed the All-SEK

first-team spot at 119 pounds going 7-1 in league action. Armstrong claimed fourth place at the Class 4A regional tournament, qualifying for the state tournament. He was 0-2 in his first state tournament and finished 24-19 for the season.

In April the NFHS approved an upward shift in the weight classes, beginning with the 103-pound class moving to 106 as the lowest class.

The 14 weight classes approved by the committee for 2011-12 are as fol-lows: 106 (pounds), 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285.

Driving force for Fillies is defenseNot much has changed for

Iola High’s Fillies as they head into the 2011-2012 bas-ketball season.

Fillies’ head coach Becky Carlson continues to stress defense and being patient on offense. It has been a win-ning formula for Carlson’s teams over the 20-plus years of high school coaching.

“We lack size this season so we have to rely a lot on motion on offense to work for the good shots. We have to be able to hit the 10-15-foot shots,” Carlson said of the Fillies.

“Of course, we have to defend well and that’s some-thing we’ve done year after year at Iola. These kids do not quit during games and play hard to the end.”

It doesn’t hurt to have two top scorers returning to lead

the way in Iola’s final run through the Southeast Kan-sas League. Iola moves to the Pioneer League next year.

The Fillies were unde-feated at home in the regu-lar season. The only loss at home was in the opening round of Class 4A substate play to Fort Scott.

The Fillies began South-east Kansas League play 0-2 and ended up 5-3. They won five straight league games, ending up tied for third. They finished 11-10 overall.

Senior guard Kelsey Lar-son and senior forward Ken-dra Taiclet are among the six returning lettermen for the Fillies. The others are senior guard Lauren Toney, senior forward Kelsey Adams, se-nior post player Lisa Mc-Fadden and junior forward Libby Shay.

Larson, who is 5-8, was named All-SEK first-team and Taiclet, who is 5-9, was All-SEK second team. The two earned All-Class 4A hon-orable mention last year.

Taiclet led the team in scoring with 226 points, which put her 40th on the IHS girls’ season-scoring list. Taiclet scored 26 points against Columbus and 20 against Baldwin which put her tied for sixth on the most points in a game and tied for 12th, respectively.

Taiclet also had the best-ever three-point field goal shooting season by an indi-vidual. Taiclet shot from be-yond the arc at a 45.4-percent clip. She hit 18 of 37 attempts from three-point range.

She is tied for seventh in threes made in a season and 18th in threes attempted. She

is eighth on the career three-pointers list and 15th on ca-reer attempts from beyond the arc. Taiclet is 30th on the season rebounds after pull-ing down 114 this year.

Larson fired in 141 points this year pushing her career total to 409, 24th on the all-time scoring list. She moved to 10th on the career assist list (195) and seventh on the career steals list (167).

Larson paced the Fillies in assists with 53 and steals with 69 this season. Larson had two games with seven steals each and two with six steals each. Larson hit 10 three-pointers last year.

The Fillies were 57 of 168 from three-point range as a team, 33.93 percent. That’s the most three-point shots by a Fillies’ team.

Quickness strong suit for MustangsNo way to sugar-coat last

year’s 1-20 season for Iola High’s Mustangs.

But ...“These guys have shown

commitment to becoming better as individual play-ers and as a team,” said Bill Peeper, who is in his second season as Mustang head coach. “We were so young last year with just one senior. It was a learning situation for the guys and for me.”

Peeper, who brought a six-year coaching mark of 112-28 from Syracuse High School when he took the Iola job, looks for more progress and more wins in the Mustangs’ 2011-2012 season. The Mus-tangs have three full-time starters and three part-time starters returning to the court.

“This team is guard-ori-ented. We don’t have much size and few true post play-ers. We do have solid ball handlers and good quickness throughout the roster,” Peep-er said.

Returning for the Mus-tangs are senior guards Clint Heffern and Jerrik Sigg and 6-4 senior forward Braden Larson. Sigg, a 5-11 guard, led the Mustangs with 154 points. He cashed in on 53 of 80 free throws for 66 percent.

Larson dumped in 126 points as second-leading scorer and led the team in re-bounds with 85 and blocked shots with 13. Heffern, 5-10, was Iola’s top three-point shooter, hitting 19 of 61 at-tempts, scoring a total of 87

points. He also dished out 33 assists.

Senior Christian Kauth, a 6-2 guard-forward, scored 92 points a year ago and pulled down 49 rebounds. Kauth and 6-1 senior guard Jarred Latta and 5-10 junior guard Levi Ashmore are among Iola’s group of three-point range shooters.

Ashmore scored 83 points and hit 15 of 56 three-point field goal attempts. He also led the team in assists with 36. Latta scored 68 points and had 44 rebounds.

“We have the shooters to hit from long range, which we need to do because of our size. We were inconsis-tent in our scoring last year and a lot of that came from

the shots we ended up with,” Peeper said.

“This is the second year of these guys in my system and things have gone smoother in practices. They know what I expect from them and how to run our offenses. We have a solid core group that was dedicated to the summer workouts.”

Corey Taylor, a 6-3 senior, came off the bench for Iola last year and is expected to see plenty of time as a for-ward. Peeper said Larson, Kauth and Taylor are being counted on to handle the in-side chores for Iola.

Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs are under new direc-tion in 2011-2012. Sherri Nelson is the first-year head coach with former HHS standout Kelci Owens as as-sistant coach.

Nelson brings college-lev-el coaching experience to the Lady Cub program. She was an assistant coach at High-land Community College in Highland for three years and head junior varsity and assistant coach at Avila Uni-versity in Kansas City, Mo.

Nelson has experienced young players on her team. Humboldt did not have a se-nior on the team a year ago when the Lady Cubs went 1-19 overall and 0-14 in Tri-Valley League play.

Back at guard for the Lady Cubs are 5-8 senior Kindahl Young, 5-4 senior Taylyn Wells and 5-8 junior Whitney Strack. Providing the anchor inside will be 6-1 sophomore post player Sheri Middle-ton. Morgan Morris is a 5-10 sophomore forward.

Kristin Todd is a 5-8 senior forward and Kayli Riebel, a 5-9 post player, are seen as contributors this sea-son. Also senior Michaela Bartlett as a 5-4 guard for depth in those positions as

well as 5-7 freshman Breanna Kline.

“The girls have a great work ethic and a drive to suc-ceed,” Nelson said. “We’re out to take giant leaps for-

ward this season as a team.”Nelson said the team has

improved its shooting per-centage. She said the girls needed to build their confi-dence on the court.

Humboldt is on the road to open the season Friday in Tri-Valley League action at Neodesha. The Lady Cubs are home all next week in the Humboldt High Invitational.

handling duties for the Fil-lies.

“Lauren is a smart player which is something I can say about all the girls. We have a basketball-smart group and they see the court pretty well. Lauren also has a good shot. If people leave her alone, she can hurt them with it,” Carl-son said.

McFadden and Adams move up from the junior varsity ranks for the Fil-lies. The two seniors were strong inside players for the Fillies’ junior varsity and had limited varsity roles off the bench last year.

“Lisa and Kelsey play much bigger than they are (5-5 and 5-6). Both post up strong inside. Lisa draws a lot fouls and hits free throws well. Libby is tal-ented and can drive and score as a forward,” Carl-son said.

Carlson is looking for help off the bench from 5-9 junior post player Ka-tie Thompson, 5-6 juniors Reagan Ford and Em-ily Ware along with sopho-more Hannah Endicott at 5-7. Endicott transferred to Iola from Marmaton Valley High School this year.

“Those four girls are

working hard in practices and should give us some depth. One of our team strengths is the work ethic shown by all of our girls plus there’s a lot of camara-derie on the team,” Carlson said.

Carlson said the younger players have shown poten-tial which needs to develop. She said the team has 10 freshmen who are pushing and being aggressive on of-fense and defense which is good for the Fillies’ fresh-man team.

“Of course, size is a con-cern for us and depth at the first of the season. We have

to develop people to step into spots. We have to work hard to clog up the inside against teams with taller players and put pressure on the ball,” Carlson said.

Young veterans powering CubsYouthful experience is a

staple for the Humboldt High Cubs this 2011-2012 basket-ball season.

Coming off a 6-15 record a year ago, the Cubs have sev-en returning lettermen on their squad. All are juniors and sophomores who saw varsity action last season.

“We have quickness to push the basketball up the court on offense and to put pressure on opponents de-fensively,” said David Taylor, who enters his fifth season as

HHS boys’ head coach.“We’re more experienced

as well as more mature phys-ically. We’re hoping to be more physical as a team this season.”

Back on the court are ju-niors Noah Thornbrugh, Tanner McNutt, Trey John-son, Blake Crawford and Na-than Whitcomb. Also return-ing are sophomores Hunter Murrow and Caleb Vanatta.

The Cubs are guard domi-ated led by McNutt, at 6-1, who averaged 11 points a

game last year. Humboldt was led by 6-6 post player Thornbrugh, averaging 17 points per game and 13 re-bounds a game. Thornbrugh earned first-team honors by Tri-Valley League coaches as a sophomore.

Johnson, 6-2, brings expe-rience at the forward spot. Taylor said they are looking to see if several of the play-ers who have been guards will step up and help on the wings.

Crawford and Whitcomb

are 6-foot guards while H. Murrow and Vanatta are 5-10 guards.

Humboldt has four seniors on the team with 6-1 forward Keifer Rutledge, 5-9 guards Austin Coy and Timothy Vaughn and 5-10 guard Stan-ton Swaggerty. The Cubs are looking for some help from newcomer 5-10 junior Hayde Boring and 5-11 forward sophomore Zack Osborne.

The Cubs have nine fresh-men on the squad.

“We’re working to have a better showing in league and overall this year. Everyone will be chasing Burlington in the Tri-Valley,” Taylor said. “Caney Valley, Neodesha and Cherryvale will be tough op-ponents also.”

The Cubs find out how tough they are when they travel to Neodesha to open the season Friday. Then they have three at home in the Humboldt High Invitational next week.

Crest High’s Lancers lost to Olpe High’s Eagles in a Kansas Class 1A substate championship game last year.

Expect the Lancers to be vying for another shot at a Class 1A substate title in 2011-2012. The Lancers come into this season with seven return-ing lettermen, including two starters from last year’s 15-7 team.

The Lancers went 7-1 to finish sec-ond in the Three Rivers League. Ac-cording to preseason TRL coaches’ poll, the Lancers are the team to beat in the TRL.

“We have a chance to have a solid season but we must develop our game mentally. If our team toughness is where it needs to be, we could have a lot of fun,” said sixth-year Lancer head coach Travis Hermreck.

While his players are working hard on the court, Hermreck is on the verge of a milestone as Lancer head coach. Hermreck is 202-100 in his career coaching but the Lancers’ first win of the season will give their

coach his 100th victory as the CHS head coach. He is 99-22 at Crest.

Leading the Lancers are a pair of junior guards. Kyle Hammond, who earned TRL first-team honors and Kansas Class 1A state honors as a sophomore guard, is 6-2 and av-eraged over 18 points a game plus shot 47 percent from the field. Jor-dan Morton is a 5-10 All-TRL guard who shot 36 percent from three-point range last year.

Also back for the Lancers are 6-3 senior guard Chris Brallier, 6-2 se-nior forward Jayden Bowen, 5-9 se-nior guard Cole Bowen, 6-2 junior forward Jesse Boone and 6-3 sopho-more forward Brock Ellis. Landon Stephens is a 5-10 sophomore guard vying for varsity playing time.

“We should be an exceptional pe-rimeter shooting team. We should be able to guard bigger this season and put a lot of pressure on opponents,” Hermreck said.

Hermreck said Crest has a differ-ent schedule this season which is

something he believed his team need-ed. “One thing is for sure, this sched-ule will let us know where we’re at.”

Although the coaches’ poll put the Lancers up top in the Three Rivers League, Hermreck said Northeast-Arma, Marmaton Valley and Union-town are front runners in the league plus Oswego is the defending cham-pion.

“Someone has to take it from them (Oswego). I expect us to be in the hunt for a league title,” he said.

The Lancers open the season Thursday at Southern Coffey County High in Le Roy in non-league action. They are in next week’s Humboldt High Invitational.

Crest High’s Lady Lancers are heading into the 2011-2012 basketball season determined to stack up a few more wins than the team has in the past couple of years.

To do that the Lady Lancers have to stay healthy with just 11 players on the roster. Crest is under a new head coach in Jennifer Reed, who was the Lady Lancer head volleyball

coach this season.“Our team goal is to win more

games than last year. We are work-ing to being aggressive on offense and defense,” said Reed, who is in her first season as a head basketball coach.

Reed said the Lady Lancers are working to taking good shots on of-fense and play tight man-to-man de-fense. She said Crest will also utilize a zone defense to keep opponents out of the lane.

In the 2011-2012 basketball season, the Wildcats stretch from 5-2 to 5-8 in height across the 12-player roster.

“We are small but fast,” Houk said of his team. “We will have to play with ba-sically five gaurds. Teams with solid post play will give us trouble because of our heights.”

Sophomore Emily Meiwes is the “big” on the Marmaton Valley squad at 5-8. Kaitlyn Ensminger is a 5-7 sopho-more and both saw starting time for the Wildcats last year.

Juniors Kailey Boyd and Kacie Shadden are 5-6 guards and junior Tabitha Ford is a 5-5 guard. All three started for the Wildcats a year ago as the team went 3-17.

Houk looks for contribu-tions from 5-2 senior guard Lydia Lance, 5-4 sophomroe guard Ashtynn Louk and 5-3 guard Kaysha Adams.

“We should be competitive but the Three Rivers League will be tough,” Houk said. “St. Paul, Jayhawk-Linn and Oswego are the top teams to beat in our league.”

Marmaton Valley opens the season at home against TRL rival Uniontown in a non-league game Friday. Marmaton Valley hosts its annual Preseason Tourna-ment next week.

Third time could be the charm.Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats

begin their third season under head coach Denny Lasley. The Wildcats got closer to a winning season last year, so it figures this third season will push the balance to the winning side of the ledger.

The Wildcats were 8-12 a year ago and finished fourth in the Three Riv-ers League. They have six returning lettermen plus four more players with some experience.

“I believe we have the capabilities to push the ball up the court and play aggressive defense,” Lasley said.

“We still need to learn to be patient offensively.

“We do have the quickness to get out and run but we have to recognize when to be patient with the basket-

ball. We need to run the offense to get high percentage shots.”

Senior guard Zack Louk, who is 5-11, leads the returning group. Louk earned Three Rivers League honor-able mention a year ago. Gage Stew-art is a 6-1 senior forwad and Derrick Carr is a 5-10 senior guard back on the court for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats have former MVHS standout Tim Stinnett as their new assistant coach.

McDonald led the team in wins and pins last year at 189 with a 32-19 mark.

The Mustangs are depending on three returning seniors who have been a part of the Iola wrestling program from the beginning. Devin Culler, Brant Clark and Zack Vaughn lead the Mustangs and senior Denton Christian has re-turned after a year off. New to the program is senior Rocky Smith.

Also back for Iola are juniors Zeph Larney, Kody Mul-lins, Joe Myrick and Chase Roettgen along with sopho-mores Cody Conner, Bryce Misenhelter, Travis Rieske and Triston Sigfusson. The Mustangs have juniors Justin Bak-er and Raymond Brandstetter back out for wrestling after taking some time off.

Sagel Hensley is a transfer student from Paola. Sweazy said Hensley gives Iola experience at the 145-pound weight class. Hensley wrestled at Paola High School.

“The problem we have is we’re short in the light weights and the heavier weights and have a log-jam in the middle weights,” Sweazy said. “We’ve got a couple of new fresh-men who could develop into solid lower weight competi-tors.”

Clark and Culler are seniors who “just keep coming at you” in practice and Sweazy hopes they show the same during matches. Culler is expected to wrestle at 160 and led the team last year with 45 escapes. Clark goes at 132. Vaughn, Mullins and Roettgen are at the 170-pound weight.

Christian is expected to wrestle at 195 for the Mustangs. Sweazy said Christian has experience on the mat but his conditioning is suspect right now. Vaughn has been in the weight room “but with Zack it’s a matter of confidence and he has said he wants to do ‘something special’ this season,” Sweazy said.

Larney, Conner and Rieske are all slotted for the 138-pound class and all are working hard in practices. Con-ner, who wrestled at 125 last year, led the team in two-point near falls with nine.

Myrick is coming off a knee injury that sidelined him for most of last year. He won’t be eligible until the second semester but is expected to see action at 152. Baker shows promise at 132 pounds.

Misenhelter, who was the team’s leader in reversals with 26 as a freshman, is looking strong at 160-pounds again. Whitworth, who wrestled in middle school, is show-ing strong at 152 pounds and first-year sophomore Jacob Rhoads is learning the sport quickly, according to Sweazy, to help the Mustangs at 145.

Freshman Trey Colborn has wrestling experience and gives Iola a heavy weight — either at 220 or 285. Freshmen Jordan Long and Kaleb Mock come out of the IMS pro-gram as well.

“We’re on a learning curve for me and for the guys. Our team is excited about hosting a season-opener on Dec. 1,” Sweazy said.

Iola hosts Eureka and Anderson County Thursday at IHS.

efit to our team as we work to improve. Over-all, this team has good athleticism and should be able to make up for being undersized with quickness and athletic ability,” Peeper said.

Defense is also a big factor for the Mus-tangs. Peeper said his team has the ability to put a lot pressure on people, using its quick-ness. The Mustangs had 128 steals as a team last year.

The Mustangs rely on man-to-man defense and last year defense was one of the most consistent parts of the Iola game. Peeper said the Mustangs have been working on zone defense to help keep opponents from controlling the lane.

“We want to use our defense to help create offensive opportunities in transition. We’ve been working on pushing things up the court to create more open floor opportunities,” Peeper said. “Last year, we had a lot of games that tended to be grind-it-out games and we didn’t do well in those.”

Iola broke a 17-game losing streak in Jan-uary but didn’t win another the rest of the season. The Mustangs were 0-8 in Southeast Kansas League play last year.

In their final season in the SEK, the Mus-tangs are looking to have a better showing before taking off for the Pioneer League next year. The Mustangs were picked to finish eighth in the SEK this year by a preseason poll.

“The effort and attitude of these kids have been great coming into the season. Another encouraging part of the season is the num-bers. We have 34 guys out this season,” Peep-er said.

Iola opens the season at home Friday against Osawatomie, which is from the Pio-neer League. Next week, the Mustangs are in an early-season tournament hosted by Louis-burg High School.

Experience, depth and team speed are three to draw to for Uniontown High’s Ea-gle girls in the 2011-2012 bas-ketball season.

The Eagles have three starters back from their 10-11 team of last year. Uniontown returns nine letterwinners for the foundation of this year’s squad.

First-team Three Rivers League selection Hope Jur-gensen, a 5-7 senior guard-forward, averaged over eight points and four rebounds a game last year for the Ea-gles. Hayden Rathbun is a 5-8 senior guard-forward who average eight points and 6.4 rebounds a contest.

Also back is 5-4 senior guard Tayler Shook, who av-eraged over four points and two assists a game. Also back are 5-4 forward Abby Dixon, 5-2 junior point guard Lau-ren Rockhold and 5-7 junior forward Amelia Brown.

Sophomores returning are 5-10 forward Emily Shinn, 5-7 forward Mandie Ridge and 5-5 guard Lakyn Coyan. The Eagles also have three players expected to step into

contributing roles — 5-7 sophomore guard Hannah Travis, 5-10 junior forward Regan Weyant and 5-3 senior guard Jessica Murrow. Wey-ant and Murrow did not play last year.

“We have a veteran team but we don’t have a lot of ex-perience with our bigs. Em-ily and Mandie got quite a bit of time last year and Regan didn’t play last year. If these

three step up, it will really help us,” said Ken Holt, who has coached the UHS girls’ basketball team for 11 years.

Holt said the Eagles will be competitive, especially with the maturity of players.

“We could be pretty good however we have a pretty tough schedule through mid-January,” Holt said. “We should be in the thick of things in the Three Rivers

League as Jayhawk-Linn, Oswego and St. Paul are the teams to beat.”

Uniontown will get 6-foot forward Jacy Ermel back in February. Ermel left the team last January because of medical reasons.

The Eagles go to Moran Fri-day to take on TRL rival Mar-maton Valley to open the sea-son. They play in next week’s Humboldt Invitational.

Looking at the roster of the Uniontown High boys go-ing into the 2011-2012 basket-ball season brings to mind the saying “loaded for bear.”

The Eagles have nine re-turning lettermen — all se-niors and juniors — on this year’s team. They graduated three seniors off last year’s 6-15 squad, which went 2-5

and finished sixth in the Three Rivers League.

“We have depth and ex-perience with quality kids who will put the team first,” said Nathan Hinrichs, who has coached the Eagles the past five years. “I don’t doubt those aspects of our game.

“The main thing is being tougher mentally and learn-

ing to finish games. We didn’t do as well finishing games last year and I think we can do that better this season.”

Brenton Esslinger is a 6-2 junior who started inside for the Eagles and was named to the TRL first-team. Senior guards Zach Travis, 6-foot, and Robert Kuns, 5-9, are two-year starters back for

the Eagles. Travis earned TRL honorable mention.

Helping Esslinger inside will be 6-4 senior Seth Symp-son and 6-2 senior Domonic Robinson. Providing depth at guard are 6-foot junior Dakota Wiley, 5-8 senior Max Labbe, 6-foot senior Jona-than Ulrey and 6-foot junior Trenton Miller.

“I feel we can be very com-petitive if we work hard to improve every day,” Hin-richs said.

Hinrichs said he expects 5-8 sophomore Skyler Riley to contribute.

“I think the Three Rivers League is balanced this year with a lot of good teams. Crest is the favorite going into the season,” Hinrichs said.

The Eagles are on the road Friday to open the season at TRL rival Marmaton Valley High in Moran. Next week the Eagles are in the Hum-boldt High Invitational.

Southern Coffey County High’s Titans are banking on hard work and intensity in 2011-2012 basketball season.

The Titans were hit hard with graduation from last year’s 10-11 team. But long-

time Titan head coach Brandt Miller is not worried.

“These kids are intense and play extremely hard and as a coach that makes it lots of fun,” Miller said. “We will be very inexperienced with

no returning starters. It will be fun to watch these kids learn and grow as players.”

Southern Coffey County has three returning letter-men on its squad of 19, which also has six freshmen.

On the inside the Titans have 6-4 senior Scott Fisch-er at forward and 6-2 senior Dusty Watts as a forward-post player. Aaron True is a 5-10 sophomore guard with varsity experience.

Seniors R.J. Snovelle, Wes Callahan and Wade Sea-bolt and sophomore Chism Newkirk are expected to step up into contributing roles. Snovelle is a 5-11 forward and Seabolt is a 5-10 forward. Callahan and Newkirk are 5-7 guards.

The Titans went 3-4 in Lyon County League action a year ago. Miller said the LCL will be very competitive.

“Lebo will be very talented along with Madison and a number of others,” he said.

Southern Coffey County opens the season Thursday at home against Crest High’s Lancers in non-league play. Next week the Titans are at Madison Tuesday and host Lebo on Friday in Lyon County League action.

Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans never back down and never count themselves out of any game. The Lady Titans are short on varsity experience going into the 2011-2012 basektball sea-son, but not to worry.

“Our strength is we have a great group of girls who will work hard to get better every day. We have four seniors who know what it takes to im-prove and play as a team and they provide good leadership for the underclassmen,” said longtime SCCH girls’ head coach Jeff True.

Southern Coffey County posted a 12-11 mark last year, losing to Olpe in the Kansas Class 1A substate championship game. They were 3-4 for sixth in the tough Lyon County League.

Back on the hardwoods for the Lady Titans are 5-6 senior guard Ashton Isch, 5-7 senior guard Katelyn Rogers and 5-11 junior post player Sarah Webb. Isch earned Class 1A state honorable men-tion. She averaged over 11 points, 4.5 rebounds, three steals and 2.5 assists a game.

Webb provided almost five points and 5.3 re-bounds a game on the inside. Rogers averaged two points, two rebounds and two assists a game.

“Ashton gives us a solid scoring threat from any-where on the floor but we will need to find some points from our other guards,” True said. “In the post, Sarah and Breanna Isch (a 6-foot sophomore) will give us a solid inside presence.”

Other players expected to contribute are 5-7 ju-nior guard Martyna Hegwald, 5-6 senior post play-er Taylor Stephens, 5-4 sophomore guard Chenae Newkirk, 5-7 junior post-guard Myranda Hegwald and 5-7 sophomore guard-post player Miranda Alumbaugh.

True said the biggest concern is depth at varsity level, especially at guard.

“We must stay healthy throughout the season. The underclassmen will have to really step up this season for us to remain competitive,” True said. “We have probably one of the toughest schedules we’ve had but the LCL schools will be very good this year.”

True said Olpe is the favorite in the Lyon Coun-ty League until someone beats it. He said Waverly, Lebo, Madison and Burlingame all will be very strong.

Southern Coffey County opens the season Thursday at home in non-league play against Crest High’s Lady Lancers. Next week the Lady Titans are at Madison Tuesday and home against Lebo Friday in LCL play.

Reaching the semifinals of the Kansas Class 2A substate tournament a year ago, Yates Center High’s Wildcat boys retool for a run back in 2011-2012.

The Wildcats do so under a new head coach — Otis Hen-dryx. Hendryx comes from Chase High School in Chase. He coached the Wildcat foot-ball team this fall.

Yates Center went 15-6 last year but return only three lettermen off that squad. They are 5-10 senior guard Blake Francis, 6-4 junior center Sam Aguirre and 5-10 sophomore guard Austin Mc-Nett.

“We have some speed and some height on the team but lack varsity experience,” Hendryx said. “The kids are working hard and we’re out to do our best each time we step on the court.”

Other players expected to help the Wildcats this sea-son are sophomores Robert Arnold, a 6-1 center, Trevor Chism, a 5-8 guard, and Ryan Mentzer, a 5-6 guard. Justin Rossillion is a 5-8 guard and Bryce Leon is a 5-6 guard, both are freshmen and are showing skills that they

should contribute to the Wildcat varsity.

Yates Center has two other seniors on the team in 5-5 guard Cody Green and 6-foot center Brent Rice. The Wild-cats also have two more ju-niors in 5-11 center Ceaton Cooper and 5-6 guard Kevin Morey.

The Wildcats open on the road Friday at Eureka. They are home all next week in the YCHS Winter Wildcat Clas-sic.

With one senior on the 2011-2012 team, Yates Center High’s Wildcat girls are depending on some younger players to push the team.

“The girls are working very hard in practice,” said third-year head coach Abbie Collins. “We’ve been working on skills to make us better fundamentally. If the girls take those skills and use them, we are going to improve every game.”

Daryean Estes, a 5-6 senior, is the anchor of the team playing inside. Junior Emily Baker, also 5-6, is back to running things from the point

guard spot.Also back are juniors guards Paige

Steinforth, Brianna Knowles and Al-lie Bruner. Sophomores Mindi Hol-loway, Becky Wendland and Maddy Galemore give the Wildcats depth at the guard positions.

Bailie Chambers at 5-10 and Ches-sa Chrisman at 5-8 are expected to contribute on the inside. Yates Cen-ter had four freshmen on the team.

“With 15 girls on the roster, we’re going to be playing a lot of girls. We only have a few girls who played var-sity last year,” Collins said.

“We are very young but I feel we are going to compete every game.”

Collins said the Wildcats are dedi-cated to playing great defense. She said her players have a great work ethic which she expects to translate in playing hard the whole game.

“If we play great defense then our offense will come,” Collins said.

Yates Center was 5-15 last year, go-ing 3-10 in Tri-Valley League play.

The Wildcats begin the 2011-2012 season with a road game at Eureka Friday. Yates Center hosts the annual Winter Wildcat Classic next week.
