A new era in Cougar volleyball officially begins this weekend. USF Athletics has bid farewell to both the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and begins NCAA Division II competition in all sports this fall.

The 2011 season also marks a new coaching era, as Joel McCartney takes the reins and is charged with preparing the Cougars for both NCAA D-II competition and for 2012, when they will compete as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, arguably the toughest volleyball conference in all of NCAA Division II.

This season will also feature a lot of new faces on the court, with the departure of several key players, including five starters. USF has lost a significant amount of its offensive production (74% of kills, 91% of set assists). Four-year starting libero and all-time career digs leader Rachel Heeney accounted for 31% of last season’s dig production, and her absence presents a major void that will need to be filled this season.

The Cougars look young on paper with just two seniors on the squad, but the team returns a number of players who saw playing time last season. New to the team are nine players; two junior transfers and seven freshmen.

The Setters McCartney must fill the vacancy at setter, which was filled the past two seasons by Samantha Haffke. In the mix are senior Stephanie Moller, junior transfer Hattie Hartzell, and a pair of freshmen, Charlee Nelson and Anna Woods

Moller has two years of varsity experience and has spent the past two seasons as Haffke’s understudy. She is one the Cougars’ best servers and tallied 105 assists in limited action backing up Haffke last season.

A newcomer who will compete for the setting spot will be junior Hattie Hartzell. She's a transfer from Buena Vista and played for the Beavers in 2009 and 2010. Hartzell recorded 972 set assists (8.92/set) as a sophomore, to go along with 177 digs and 19 total blocks.

Charlee Nelson arrives as a highly-touted setter with a dangerous serve, racking up 841 set assists and 48 service aces as a senior at Mitchell High School. She was a consistent presence for the Kernels, leading Mitchell to its first class AA state tournament appearance since 2004. Nelson was named to the Class AA all state first-team squad and was also honored as the 2010 Daily Republic Player of the Year.

The Middle Blockers

USF does return 84% of its blocks from a year ago, led by senior middle blocker Alyssa Chambers, who accounted for 165 of the squad’s 297.5 total blocks (55%). Chambers played in all but one match in 2010; an elbow injury forced her to sit out a late season match-up against former conference rival Northwestern College.

2011 USF VOLLEYBALL CATCHING UP WITH THE COUGARS  

Chambers was second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference in blocks in 2010 and last year was named honorable mention all-GPAC. She’s also expanded her offense each season at USF; increasing her kill total (157/178/209) and kills per set average (1.3/1.32/1.56) over the past three years. She's turned into a versatile player who isn't just a great hitter but an outstanding passer and defensive player.

Junior middle blocker Sarah Kohler owns two years of experience and 75 match appearances to her credit. Kohler came up big throughout the 2010 season, contributing 7 kills on .400 hitting in USF’s 3-2 win over Texas Wesleyan and five hits and four total blocks in a Cougar 3-0 victory against future conference foe Minot State.

Junior Kristine Fisch and two newcomers, Samantha Lovell and Katlynn Sawtelle, will vie for the third spot on the front line.

Fisch is a versatile player and one of the Cougars’ most vocal leaders, both on and off the court. At 6-0, Fisch can be a towering presence along the net.

Samantha Lovell ended her prep career (Bellevue East) as one of the best blockers in the state of Nebraska. She finished her senior campaign tied for first in the state for blocks per set and also led the Chieftains to back-to-back state tournament appearances (2009-10) for the first time in school history. Lovell set the school’s single season record for blocks (102) as a junior and also earned an honorable mention all-state nod as a senior.

Katlynn Sawtelle (Luverne) received all-conference and all-area honorable mention awards her senior year, notching 235 kills (3.2 per set/.276 hitting efficiency) and 69 total blocks. An athletic player with a great jump, Sawtelle also compiled an impressive track and field resume for the Cardinals, winning two Minnesota state championships (100 meter hurdles, 4X200 meter relay) and placing second in the pole vault.

Outside & Right Side Hitters

USF’s biggest question mark heading into 2011 will be how to fill the production of right side hitter Amber Nieuwsma and outside hitters Danielle Roers and Kaprice Glover.

A four-year starter, Nieuwsma garnered first-team honors in 2010 and provided 2.44 kills per set as a senior, while Roers was a three-year starter who received honorable mention All-GPAC plaudits for three consecutive years. Glover led the Cougars in kills (348) and was a second-team All-GPAC selection.

One of the players looking to fill the void left by Nieuwsma, Roers and Glover is junior transfer Chanda Goedken. Goedken played her first two seasons of collegiate volleyball at Kirkwood Community College (Iowa), and amassed 400 kills and 454 digs last season en route to being recognized as a first-team NJCAA All-American. Goedken recorded 977 kills and 978 digs at Kirkwood; McCartney looks to capitalize on the experience and leadership Goedken can bring to the young Cougar squad.

Junior right side/outside hitter Sarah Jundt is back after missing significant time last season with a foot injury. Jundt recorded 68 kills (.81 kills/per set), 35 blocks and 42 digs in 84 sets.

Junior Kelsey Krcil is a two-year varsity player who recorded seven kills and six blocks in 2010.

Two freshmen are also looking to snag one of the vacant outside positions. Emily Johnson, a versatile athlete with a great vertical leap, was a first-team all-state outside hitter for Platte High School, notching 468 kills and 57 blocks. Marissa Mann was a two-sport star at Phillip High School who took home first team all-state volleyball and third team all-state basketball honors as a senior. Mann will also play basketball for the Cougars.

Liberos & Defensive Specialists

When 2,000 digs club member Rachel Heeney graduated in May, she left USF as one of the best liberos in the program’s history. Her replacement has very big shoes to fill. Sophomore defensive specialist Tashayla Person was a key player for the Cougars in 2010 and appears to have secured the white libero jersey this season. She played extremely well as a freshman, finishing fourth on the team in digs (333) and digs per set (2.43). Person notched eight digs in the Cougars’ first-round GPAC tournament victory over Mount Marty College. Person excels at reading where the ball will be hit and possesses a quick first step and should once again be a great defensive player for the Cougars.

Brittni Merchant and Maura Bickner, two sophomores with limited collegiate experience, seek an expanded role in 2011. Merchant saw action in six matches as Heeney’s backup and has looked sharp in preseason action.

Junior Caitlin Vance is a two-year veteran who has logged minutes as a second-string defensive specialist.

New to the team are freshmen Lacey Lewis and Anna Woods. Lewis was a three-year starting setter for a Washington Warriors squad that was a state tournament qualifier for three consecutive years. She was named to the 2010 Sioux Falls Sports Club All City Girls Volleyball team. Woods was a six-sport athlete for the Marian (Neb.) Crusaders that made a name for herself playing with the Nebraska Impact Volleyball Club.

The Cougars will open the 2011 season on Friday afternoon as they host the Active Ankle Invite. USF opens tournament play with Fort Hays State at 3 p.m. before going up against Minot State at 7 p.m. The Cougars will close out the event on Saturday against Bemidji at noon and Waldorf at 4:00 p.m.

2011 Season Outlook Q and A with Head Coach Joel McCartney What led you to accept the USF Volleyball Head Coaching Position? “I have a tremendous opportunity at USF to lead a volleyball program through the final stage of its transition into the toughest NCAA Division-II volleyball conference in the country. To help bring the potential of this program into that environment is a challenge that I am very passionate about.” “The second thing is that the community of Sioux Falls is such a wonderful environment to raise a family. With two small children, Andrea and I were looking for a great place to pass along the Midwestern values our parents instilled in us. Sioux Falls seemed like a perfect fit for the McCartneys.” What is your coaching philosophy? “The most important aspect of my life beyond faith and family is the Cougar volleyball program. I want to be able to give every part of myself to building up the potential of everyone involved with this team. I want to ensure that each student-athlete has a great academic experience at USF that will prepare them all for a lifetime of possibilities. “Finally, I want to recruit the very best student-athletes and help them build character by teaching accountability and responsibility through the competitive experiences within our program.” What do you look for in a recruit? “USF has a tradition of great academic programs that will ensure a quality education and a meaningful degree for any student or student-athlete. Because the university places such an emphasis on its students being accountable and responsible, the program attracts student-athletes who have already been successful in the classroom. However, what is most important to me is how much a student-athlete is willing to work in order to meet both their athletic and academic potential. Overall, we are looking for good citizens with exceptional potential. We want our athletes to respect themselves, the individuals in our program and the people of their community.” What is your program outlook in your first season as head coach for the Cougars? “This truly will be a transition year for the Cougars and we anticipate many changes on and off the court. It is difficult to know how our program will face the challenges of an extremely tough schedule; however, there is no doubt we have the right player personnel to create a very positive and necessary change for Cougar volleyball.” “We believe our program will dramatically improve as the season progresses. Over the course of the preseason, our athletes were able to become more physical and focused which leads to a stronger and more confident group. We will be prepared to challenge every program in the conference as we continue the transition into the NSIC.”

Joel McCartney Head Volleyball Coach Overall Coaching Record (14 seasons): 344-155

Joel McCartney enters his first season at the helm of the Cougar volleyball program.

McCartney came to USF in July 2011 after a four-year stint as the head coach of the University of Georgia volleyball program. In McCartney's tenure, the Bulldogs compiled an overall record of 62-55 and a Southeastern Conference record of 29-45.

McCartney's time at Georgia concluded with his career record standing at 344-155.

In his first season at UGA in 2007, McCartney led the Bulldogs to the

biggest turnaround in program history, as that year's squad posted a 17-13 record following just a six-win campaign in 2006. The 2007 Bulldogs then posted eight conference victories, the most league wins for the program since 2004. Georgia's 17 total wins and eight SEC wins surpassed the combined total number of overall and conference wins from both the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

In 2008, Georgia went 17-14 with a 10-10 record in SEC action under the guidance of McCartney, who entered the season poised to reach a career milestone of his own. With the Bulldogs' 3-0 defeat of the Furman Paladins on August 31 in the Georgia Bulldog Invitational Tournament, McCartney achieved his 300th collegiate-career head coaching victory. The highlight of the Bulldogs’ season was an upset win over the No. 8-ranked Florida Gators. The win by the Bulldogs snapped a 45-match losing streak to the Gators, which dated back to 1990.

The 2009 Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 17-14 including an 8-12 SEC mark, UGA's highest finish in the SEC since 2004. In league action, Georgia captured its eight victories by sweeping the two-match, season-series with Auburn and Mississippi State while splitting series with Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

In 2010, Georgia opened the season on a six-match winning streak including a 4-0 mark to win the Deacon Invitational tournament title. The Bulldogs went on to carry an 8-4 mark into the start of the conference season and would pull off a five-set upset over 20th-ranked Tennessee in late September. However, after that upset, McCartney's Bulldogs won two matches over their next 10 contests prior to his departure from the program with the team's 2010 record standing at 11-14 overall and 3-11 in SEC action.

Prior to his tenure at Georgia, McCartney coached Winthrop University (S.C.) to a 167-49 record in six years, including a 34-3 campaign in 2006. McCartney’s Eagles captured five consecutive Big South Conference titles and made five straight appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament.

McCartney, a native of Papillion (Neb.), began his coaching career in 1991 as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky University. He served in that capacity for two seasons before accepting the first assistant coaching position at Indiana State University, which he held from 1993-95. McCartney then took over the head coaching position of the Nebraska Tornados, a National Volleyball Association Professional League team, from 1996-98. His 1998 team captured the NVA national championship.

During his stint as the Nebraska Tornados head coach, McCartney also served as the head coach at Bellevue University (1996-2000). He led the NAIA program to a 115-51 overall record, recruited and coached several academic and athletic All-Americans and brought the program to national prominence.

In only four short seasons, McCartney became the winningest volleyball coach in Bellevue University history.

McCartney left Bellevue University to return to an assistant position at the Division I level. In 2001, he accepted a role at the University of Oklahoma as the first-assistant coach. His responsibility under the mentorship of his former college teammate, Kalani Mahi, was assisting in the on-court training and recruitment of student-athletes.

McCartney also played on the collegiate and professional levels. He was both an Academic and Collegiate Club All-American while playing for Graceland College from 1983-87. He went on to play for the USAV Open National Champions, Nike Molten, in 1988 before competing professionally from 1989-91 in Umea, Sweden for Team IKSU.

A 1983 graduate of Papillion High School (Neb.), McCartney holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Economics and Finance from Graceland College and a master's degree in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky University. He is married to the former Andrea Viviano from Kansas City and has a daughter Kate (7), and son James (5).

Andrea McCartney Assistant Volleyball Coach

Andrea McCartney enters her first season as the assistant volleyball coach for the USF Cougars. She has thirteen years of assistant coaching experience at the professional, collegiate and the junior development levels.

A native of Kansas City, Mo., she most recently served as a volunteer coach for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2008-10.

In her three years with the program, the Bulldogs posted an overall mark of 45-42.

McCartney previously spent five seasons as an assistant coach for the Winthrop Eagles from 2001-06.

Prior to her tenure at Winthrop, McCartney served as a volunteer coach at the University of Oklahoma in 2000.

McCartney served as an assistant coach at Bellevue University for the four years (1996-99) that her husband, head coach Joel McCartney, led the program. The two have joined efforts in coaching since 1996. She also served as an assistant to the Nebraska Tornados, a NVA league professional team, in 1998.

One of McCartney’s great passions is the development of youth volleyball and seeing youth athletes succeed. Throughout her coaching career, McCartney has held several youth volleyball clinics and also served as a junior development head coach for the Midlands Volleyball Club from 1997-99.

McCartney was a four-year letter-winner (1992-96) at Bellevue University, where she earned MCAC First Team and NAIA All-Region honors at the outside hitter position. She also played one season for the Nebraska Tornados in the NVA Professional League as a defensive specialist in 1997.

She is married to Cougars’ head volleyball coach Joel McCartney. The couple has two children, a daughter Kate (7), and son James (5).

2009 (SOPHOMORE): Her breakthrough season as a USF Cougar… played in all 38 matches…led the team with 151 blocks (1.10 per game)...also fifth in kills (178) and recorded 42 digs.
