2009 Highlights

RE-WRITING THE RECORD BOOKS: Senior libero Haley Carroll became the all-time dig leader in West Coast Conference history and only the 45th player in NCAA Division I history to record 2,000 career digs. Carroll totaled 527 digs during the 2009 season to fin-ish her career with 2,091 digs for a career average of 4.83 digs per set. She is USF’s all-time leader in career digs and career digs per set. The Gilroy, Calif. native played in 433 sets for the Dons to become the school’s all-time leader in sets played. Carroll is also second in USF history in service aces with 148.

DORON MOVES TO THE TOP: USF’s seven West Coast Conference wins allowed head coach Gilad Doron to surpass Laurie Corbelli for most WCC wins as a Dons’ head coach with 24.

PROGRAM MILESTONE: The Dons celebrated a major program milestone on September 26th with their vic-tory against California State Bakersfield to earn the program’s 350th volleyball win. USF won 3-1.

TOUGH COMPETITION: The Dons played nearly a fifth of their matches against ranked opponents. USF began the season playing Oregon, then ranked No. 14, followed by a match against bay area rival No. 11 Stanford in mid-September. In early October, the Dons took on then No. 24 San Diego, followed by a weekend against No. 25 Saint Mary’s and No. 22 San Diego in early November. USF went just 1-4 in those contests, with the win coming via a 3-0 sweep against San Diego at home.

2009 USF Volleyball Team Leaders

MANDALA CHASES HISTORY: Outside hitter Sarah Mandala continued to climb the USF records in her ju-nior season. Her 508 kills in a single season was the third-most in school history. Mandala moved to No. 1 in USF history in kills per set with an average of 4.84. With just 250 more kills, Mandala will become USF’s all-time kills leader. She is currently fifth on the list with 1,281.

SPEED DEAMON: Sarah Mandala reached 1,000 career kills with her final swing against California State Ba-kersfield on September 26th. She was the ninth player in USF history to accomplish that feat, reaching the mark quicker than the other eight. Mandala was just the third Don to achieve that milestone as a junior.

WCC HOME WIN-STREAK SNAPPED: USF saw a 10-game WCC home win streak end with a loss to then No. 25 Saint Mary’s on Nov. 5th. USF hadn’t lost a WCC match on the Hilltop since Nov. 17, 2007. USF has lost just four WCC games at home in the past 3 seasons.

DONS CLAIM ALL-WCC ACCOLADES: Senior libero Haley Carroll and junior outside hitter Sarah Mandala were both named first-team All-WCC performers. It was the second consecutive first-team honor for Man-dala and second time Carroll received the nod after being selected in 2007.

PROGRAM FIRST : On Oct. 22nd, USF posted its first-ever win at Pepperdine in a five-set thriller. It was the Dons’ first win against the Waves on the road and only third victory against Pepperdine in program history.

West Coast Conference When the West Coast Conference got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind - to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision 57 years ago is a marvelous cohesive athletics league which is competitive at the national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the Western United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in athletics and academics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross-country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball. The league was chartered by five Bay Area institu-tions (Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara) as the California Basketball Association, playing its first game on January 2,

1953. After two seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became the “West Coast Athletic Conference” in 1956. The name was shortened to “West Coast Conference” in 1989. The current full-time lineup of WCC schools has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third most stable conference in the country. This year marks the 25th anniversary of WCC

volleyball and the league today ranks as one of the toughest conferences in the entire nation. At least three league schools have advanced to the NCAA Tournament from 1997 to 2008, highlighted by an unprecedented

six selections - Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Clara - in 2003. The conference enjoyed another record-setting year in 2005 as five teams advanced to the NCAA’s, two squads reached the Sweet-16 for the second consecutive season. Santa Clara and Pepperdine faced each other in the third round with the Broncos downing the Waves en route to the Final-Four - the first national semifinal berth in WCC history. In the last 12 years the conference has featured 24 All-Americans. As for its overall success, the WCC has annually advanced at least one team or individual to a national championship semifinal since 1989. In 2005 Portland women’s soccer captured its sec-ond College Cup in four seasons. The Pilots dispatched Santa Clara - the 2001 NCAA Champions - in the 2002 National Finals. League members have won more than 32 NCAA team and individual championships overall, most recently when Pepperdine captured the men’s tennis team title in 2006.

West Coast Conference Volleyball began in 1985 and today ranks as one of the toughest conferences in the entire nation. In 2003, an

unprecedented six league schools qualified for the NCAA Tournament and at least three teams have reached the postseason from 1997-2008.
