SAN FRANCISCO DONS BASKETBALL - PAGE 2

HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kan-sas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his third season on the Hilltop, every player on the 2010-11 roster was recruited to USF by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players from outstand-ing prep programs and all look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. San Francisco made strides during the second year of its rebuilding process under Coach Walters and showed its resiliency by posting a solid showing in a much-improved West Coast Confer-ence. USF closed the league campaign on a tear, winning four of fi ve highlighted by a thrilling 81-77 overtime upset victory against No. 13/8 Gonzaga. The Dons seized a 72-70 road overtime win at San Diego the next time out and then swept the fi nal homestand of the year against the Lions and Pepperdine. San Francisco posted its third and fi nal overtime triumph in a 71-68 cliffhanger at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara. San Francisco posted its best league record (7-7) and fi nish (fourth) since 2007. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Wil-liams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have fi ve children: Addison (14), Drew (12), Riley (9), Gunner (7), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

Game No. 25 Recap - No. 23 Saint Mary’sDONS FALL TO LEAGUE-LEADING GAELS: USF battled but could not overcome a potent Saint Mary’s offensive assault and dropped a 86-68 West Coast Conference decision in front of a sold out crowd at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (13-12, 7-3) are now tied for second in the conference standings with defending league champion Gonzaga, while the Gaels (22-4, 10-1 WCC) tighten their grip and down their cross-bay rivals for the 11th con-secutive time.

Junior guard Rashad Green and sophomore guard Michael Wil-liams scored a team-high 17 points, while freshman Marko Petro-vic chipped in with 14 points off the bench.

San Francisco led 4-3 on a Williams’ lay-up with 18:56 to go. Saint Mary’s promptly answered with a Clint Steindl 3-pointer less than a minute later and the Dons would never reclaim the lead. USF battled back from a seven-point defi cit to cut the lead to two, 36-34 at halftime.

Once in the second half, San Francisco tied the game at 36-36 on a jumper by sophomore forward Perris Blackwell, but Saint Mary’s reeled off 14 unanswered points and put the game out of reach.

Senior guard Mickey McConnell led four Gaels in double-digit scoring with 19 points to go along with eight assists in 40 minutes, while junior forward Rob Jones chipped in 18 points.

Saint Mary’s shot at a .549 (28-51) clip from the fi eld and went .400 (8-20) from beyond the arc. USF shot .400 (22-55) and made just two 3-pointers. The Dons held a 32-29 rebound edge. GAELS GAMBITS: USF posted its fi rst sellout (4,500) of the season at War Memorial Gym, highlighted by a student section of more than 900 Meeting No. 170 between the Dons and Gaels USF honored 174 student-athletes which posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher during a special halftime ceremony

DONS AND PILOTS RACE FOR THE ROSES: Portland and San Francisco won’t just be facing off in a men’s basketball game on Thursday. The Pilots have challenged the Dons’ men’s cross country team to a head-to-head indoor mile challenge. The indoor mile competition, run on the track above the basketball arena, is a time-honored tradition taking place once a year at halftime of a men’s game. Four runners from each school will race on the three-lane track for bragging rights. USF came within seven points of upsetting the Pilots at the WCC Cross Country Championships, making it the closest race in league history.

JUST HOW YOUNG ARE THE DONS? USF enters the 2010-11 season with just seven years of returning Division I experience, six coming under the direction of head coach Rex Walters. According to a survey conducted by the University of Kentucky of all Division I programs, the Dons are tied for the seventh least experienced roster in basketball. The breakdown follows. 4: Eastern Washington; 5: Sacramento State, UT-Arlington; 6: Idaho, Radford, Cal State Fullerton; 7: San Francisco, UC Riverside, Louisiana-Monroe. Seven schools reported eight years of Division I experience. Overall, 22 schools reported less than 10 years of experience.

CODY DOOLIN ON POINT FOR THE DONS: Freshman guard Cody Doolin continues to impress in the USF backcourt. Doolin has started every game for the Green and Gold this season, and ranks third on the team in minutes (31.5). The Texan scored a career-high 23 points, including the game-winning 3-point play against Gonzaga (1/22/11). This season, Doolin averages 7.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

CARDIAC KIDS: USF can never be accused of being boring or even necessarily doing things the easy way. Off to their best West Coast Conference start (7-3) since 2002, the Dons have trailed at halftime of a whopping eight of their 10 league games. USF has held just two intermission leads during league play - a 31-28 lead against Portland (1/20/11) and a 31-17 advantage against San Diego (2/10/11). The Dons overcame an 11 point, 35-24 halftime defi cit at Santa Clara (1/8/11).

MORE WILDCATS ON THE BENCH: USF head coach Rex Walters elevated Justin Bauman to assistant coach for the 2010-11 season and also added former Kansas team captain Michael Lee to the bench. Bauman spent his fi rst two seasons at USF as the Director of Basketball Operations. Both Bauman and Lee were inducted into the Kansas Jayhawks Athletic Hall of Fame for their connection with the 2003-04 NCAA Elite Eight team. Coach Bauman served as the head student assistant for the Jayhawks in 2003-04 under Bill Self, while Coach Lee served as a James Naismith team captain during his junior campaign.

A RETURN TO THE 90S: USF’s run and gun offense was showcased in its 97-76 win against Seattle U. (11/12/10) in the 2010-11 season opener. The Dons posted its fi rst 90-plus point night against a Division I opponent since a 93-63 win against Sacramento State (11/17/07). The Dons set a program record with a 129-64 win against Holy Names (1/2/10) and also posted a 92-66 win vs. Dominican (11/16/09).

USF DONS SIGN MARK TOLLEFSEN FOR

2011-12 CAMPAIGN The University of San Francisco men’s basketball team is proud to an-nounce the signing of 6-foot-9 forward Mark Tollefsen from Danville, Calif. Tollefsen, a senior at San Ramon Valley in Danville, signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) today on the fi rst day of the early signing period. After signing seven players last year, USF will sign just one player this season. “Once Mark makes the transition to the collegiate game, you will see a young man that understands how to play the game offensively,” USF head coach Rex Walters said. “He will guard multiple positions and will be used a lot of dif-ferent ways. We are very excited to get a young man that comes from a great program and great parents.” The Bay Area product played a key role in San Ramon Valley’s 28-4 season last year. The Wolves shared the East Bay Athletic League title with De La Salle and played its way to the CIF Division I Northern California semi-fi nals where it lost by three points to De La Salle. Tollefsen averaged 9.2 points and 7.3 rebounds last season for the Wolves shooting 54 percent from the fi eld and 45 percent from behind the arc. He also av-eraged 5.4 offensive rebounds a game. “Mark is a long/lean athletic hybrid forward,” Walters said. “He’s a very skilled passer, that can handle the ball, shoot with range and can play three to four positions on the court.” Tollefsen played for the Lakeshow 17 AAU team this past summer, with his team winning the San Francisco City Tournament championship.

Once again, the West Coast Conference has worked with partners Comcast and Channel 4 San Diego to create a regional syndication package for a number of WCC games. WAR MEMORIAL GETS A FACELIFT

During the Summer of 2009, USF Ath-letics honored a remarkable past and prepared for the next generation with a major renovation in War Memori-al Gym. Among a number of improve-ments was the fi rst fl oor replacement done since the arena opened in 1958-59. Along with the new hardwood fl oor-ing, the gym is sporting a fresh court design and a new coat of paint from fl oor to ceiling. The wooden bleachers on the ends of the court were replaced, and new lights were installed.

Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entranc-es with to the arena, new retired jer-seys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference champi-onship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs.

Prior to the 2010-11 season, new lights were added to the facility to further en-hance the fan experience.
